Been here a few times over the years and years my family has been coming to Arnold. Burgers are ok, onion rings are slightly better, and milkshakes are mostly overpriced. But we still come back. Mainly cause there are limited ice cream options, and you don't always want pizza or Chinese. It's a solid 3- mostly cause service isn't great but isn't too bad and neither is the food. The prices are high and the wait is long. I ordered three burgers, some fries, onion rings and a shake - 65.00. My order was to go, and they gave me the shake (which was for someone who wasn't with me) about 20 minutes into my 45 minute wait. Around 35 minutes in, they gave me everything but my onion rings. There were five people back in that kitchen, and it wasn't very busy, so I'm not sure what was going on. The food was actually pretty good, but definitely not worth the wait or the price. Giant Burger is almost like family to me. I was born in Arnold, my earliest memories usually include a strawberry milkshake from Giant Burger. As a matter of fact, I had the high score in one of the old arcade games they used to have inside, it was Tekken to be exact. I digress, long gone are the days of arcade machines and wore out furniture. I revisited Giant Burger on my trip to the top of Ebbets Pass, which is a staple anytime I'm in the Sierras, however things were somewhat different. From the outside I noticed a very full parking lot, after circling the building I was able to squeeze in. Upon entry I saw the very familiar menu. An awesome selection of burgers and ice creams accompanied with other simple snacks such as chicken tenders and hot dogs. After getting our order and going to the dining area I noticed fresh paint and relatively new furniture, a very welcome change. The floor plan is laid out so much better than it used to be. After reminiscing over a delicious burger I couldn't help but sit a bit longer, this could be the very strong emotional connection I have to the entirety of Arnold and the surrounding areas but I felt at home. My experience here is much more euphoric than most but I can guarantee you, the food eclipsed any of those feelings. A perfect spot to grab a very quick bite and enjoy every second of it. It's a burger joint in the Foothills so I had low expectations, but I was pleasantly surprised at how good the food was. I got a ciabatta burger and fries, which was a lot of food. The burger was better than most I've had around the Bay Area, even though it wasn't Kobe or Angus or whatever. Good flavor and well dressed, what more could you want. The fries were great with a little crust on them (beer battered?) It's not fast food, as they were busy, but I don't think they consider themselves to be. Whatever, it was worth the wait. Inconsiderate and rude! The sign states that they are open from 11am-7pm. We arrived with 6 adults and 2 kids at 12pm, ordered $105 in food and drinks. We waited for 25 minutes after ordering our food and the guy came out to tell us "I'm taking my lunch, so you can either take your food to-go or sit outside." We hadn't even received our food and we were forced to sit outside with no access to bathrooms, napkins, or refills. We watched as over 20 people came trying to eat lunch but the doors were locked with the open signs left on. It was absolutely inconsiderate to force us outside after already waiting for our food - should have told us prior to ordering our food. Also, it was a chilly day and so my kids were cold. Who in the world takes their lunch and shuts down the restaurant at 12:30pm during the lunch rush!? read more

Just ok. Highlights were the strawberry shake and fries. The service was terrible, the guy ringing us up seemed put off that we wanted to order something and very disinterested in being in a customer service position. Stopped in on 4th of July for an ice cream, all 13 of us. They were pretty busy so had to wait a bit, but we did get a chance to speak with the new owner. What a nice person. Told us of their plans to upgrade the place and we already noticed it seemed to be much cleaner and the staff was very friendly. This spot is one of those old school burger and shake places. They have shakes in every flavor you'd want. So when I saw that they had banana shakes, I knew we had to try this place during our weekend visiting Arnold. I had a cheeseburger and my hubby had a bacon cheeseburger, both of us thought they were pretty good. The fries were tasty too. The milkshakes were ok. Today I came in with my family for the first time and I left my iPhone 8 pls at the counter and the awesome staff returned my phone when I came back and asked. I wish I could give 0 stars. By far the worst chicken sandwich I've ever had. First off, my bad for assuming it would consist of a grilled piece of chicken. I guess I should have asked. Instead, it was made with leftover chicken tenders that were so overcooked it was like eating jerky. I had to take the sandwich apart because the chicken was impossible to chew. I compared my chicken from the sandwich to the chicken tenders my friend ordered. Same kind of chicken- but the taste and texture was night and day. I'm pretty sure they save the week's leftover "tenders " and dupe the customers by disguising them as a sorry excuse for a chicken sandwich. So in the end, I ended up with 2 pieces of chicken leather and a lettuce, tomato and mayonnaise sandwich. I'm pretty sure this place is trying to pinch every penny and save all the leftover food and resell it to customers as "fresh". I get it, COVID-19 has put a lot of pressure on smaller businesses and money is tight and business still slow. But this is uncalled for. I am pretty sure my chicken was cooked days before, reheated (overcooked) and used as a pathetic excuse for a chicken sandwich. Now let's move onto the sweet potato fries.... everyone knows that fries are only good when they are fresh out of the fry grease...but the key is to use fresh potatoes to start with! Our fries were so dry and crispy. It was obvious that these too, had been leftover from the day before or longer. At least they got my shake right. I don't want this to be all negative so let me highlight a positive. All staff were wearing gloves and mask. Thank you for that. Except..... at least one employee had her mask only covering her mouth. Um, unless you are strictly a mouth breather, this defeats the whole purpose of wearing the mask. All in all, definitely one of the most disgusting meals I've eaten in a long time. Hint: when they ask if you are a local, say yes. Time for an update! There is something about breathing in that clean mountain air that makes me HUNGRY. After a day of running around I crave a meal from Giant Burger. Located right on Highway 4, you can't miss it. What I really like about Giant Burger is there is something for everyone. Burgers? Check. Chicken Sandwich? Yep. Veggie Burgers? Heck yes! The fries are really tasty too. But my absolute favorite thing to order is a strawberry milkshake. So creamy and delicious! Love it. Burgers and fries are delicious You have to order at the counter but the food comes out within 10 minutes and the kitchen is open behind the counter which is nice because I like to see that the kitchen is clean, which it is. The building is a bit old and could use a facelift(the reason i mention this is because the the napkins, cups and paper burger wrap have that old scent to them,) but everything in arnold is old.... Its a wonderfully preserved mountain town .... I just don't want to taste it:) This is a main stop on the road to bear valley and big trees park so lots of tourists some days. I've seen some real diva behavior from some of the tourists so keep in mind that this is a local burger joint and if they dont carry Fiji water bottles don't be a jerk. A year since my last review, my family & I stopped in on our way to Lake Alpine. Same nostalgic trip down memory lane as last year only this time it included my daughter instead of just my wife & I. Based on last year's experience and mild disappointment, I'd already set the expectation level a little lower. Reading the negative reviews written since our last visit didn't help much....and truth be told, I almost opted to skip this roadside institution and head straight up to Alpine. Glad we didn't! Giant Burger did not disappoint. In fact, I bumped them UP a star from last year. It was a Monday, lunchtime, second week in September---and not crowded. One guy behind the counter was taking orders & cooking. He was very friendly & polite with pants properly cinched around his waist (as one reviewer commented on this earlier). Although he was cooking about three burgers at the time, he acknowledged us and said he'd be with us in just a minute. I watched him check burger doneness before flipping them one more time & coming over to take our order. Just then, the patron for whom those three burgers were being cooked, walked up and said, "Did I remember to ask for those fries well done? Extra crispy?" The guy said "no" but that it would also be no problem. His burgers would be done sooner, would he like them now or when the fries are done? I mention all this because in other reviews, it's brought up several times about slow, apathetic & downright rude service. Didn't see any of that here on this day. Even though he was working alone and handling multiple tasks, there was no sign of being rude or unappreciative. In fact, it was just the opposite. Later, I saw two other employees show up after we'd gotten our meal & were almost finished. I could tell from their conversation that one was returning from their break, the other just starting their shift. Our meals: ordered two grilled cheese sandwiches & fries for my wife & daughter. Asked for cheddar since I knew that if I didn't, American would be used. I had my usual Giant Burger, fries and a root beer float. We sat inside since it had just rained and the outside tables were a wet mess. In about 15 mins our number was called. The moment of truth had arrived. Would my burger be better than last year? Our fries hot? Would the grilled cheese be acceptable for my grilled cheese loving daughter? Oh Giant Burger---you did not fail. Thank you, thank you, thank you! My burger was delicious AND the grilled cheese sandwiches were devoured before I could even open the packets of ketchup for three orders of fries that were not only hot, but very tasty, Our experience was so good, I even dropped a five spot in their tip jar before leaving. What is Giant Burger? It is Quintessential Americana, at least the food part of it. We stopped here after a hiking and camping trip in big trees. After all, why bother burning all those calories hiking unless you can eat something delicious after right? Just kidding (mostly). This is an old fashioned place with burgers and shakes. It's not fast food, but not "nice" sit down either, it is very casual. The day we went it was pretty busy with a long line. Half hte group stood in line and half snagged a table. The waiting wasn't too bad before people came back with food. Perhaps it was the hiking, but the burgers were delicious and everyone who had a shake enjoyed them too. It is a pretty basic business and the ordering area is pretty cramped. The bathrooms are also lacking, at least from the female perspective. It felt like the wait to use the facilities was as long as for food. Still it is a unique local place with decent food at decent prices. read more

My family and I spent the day up there and decided to get dinner here on the way back home. My family and I are not able to wear a mask due to health conditions that we each have but I did leave my family in the car to order. I was immediately ordered to wear one. When I explained that I have a medical condition preventing this I was given a very dirty look but my order was taken anyway. I was not given the fries in the kids meal for my kids and the onion rings were old and disgusting. Today my fiancé and I are feeling nauseous and we believe it was from the food we ate last night. We both believe the horrible service and food were due to my inability to wear a mask. I am giving 2 stars because the Oreo milkshake my son got was prob the best I have ever had. I am not giving the other 3 stars because we never actually got our food. When we got there on Monday June 28 at 1145, there was one group of 4 that just finished up ordering in front of us. I proceeded to order 1 burger, 1 grilled cheese, 1 Shake and fries to go with it. It took about 15 min for the shake. then about 5 min later the group In front of me received their order. I waited another 5 minutes and finally asked the cashier how much longer it would be and he said, it should be up soon. I told him it had been over a half hour now. His response, well it should be up soon. At that point I decided to cancel my order. If the guy at the front counter would have been a little more friendly maybe I would have waited for my order. As I was waiting for my order. He was kind of a jerk to the 3 groups ordering behind me. My advice. Speed things up a bit, and get someone a little more friendly at the front counter. read more

This place is frustrating... One of those where you just try to will it into being good. But it is not. It is in the perfect location near the parks and highway. You build up a hunger in the mountains, and a burger and fries sounds fantastic every time. But this place needs help. The service provides an overwhelming sense of indifference, with a bit of annoyance thrown in for good measure. And the food... the food... um... completely underwhelming. The patties are bland frozen coasters thrown on the grill. Buns, plain Costco purchase. At least throw those buns on the grill for a second to toast them. Overall rather flavorless burgers. Chicken nuggets, more frozen flavorless fare. The fries... so much hope, so little delivery. These could be good, they try, they get close... but they too are sad, weathered, limp, lifeless forms of their potential. How about dropping them in the oil a second time guys?? We've come almost every time we come up to our cabin over several years and my husband many years since childhood. Since we've last had burgers here they changed owners. My husband loves their burgers. But this time the burgers were flavorless. Although she did an amazing job on my lettuce wrap the burger had no flavor and I couldn't even eat it. Which very much disappointed my husband and if we weren't headed home he would have grabbed a shake. I'm lactose intolerant and can't avoid their shakes so we didn't get one. But since the burgers aren't great I fear the shakes will end up being subpar compared to before. read more
