I stayed three night at the Montvale Hotel, and got dinner tonight from the Gilded Unicorn, located in the old, renovated boiler room of the Montvale... I sat at the bar and had a "Tiki Drink Dejour"... delicious. I didn't catch her name, but the bartender was great, and really knew her stuff. For takeout I requested a green salad and their Cast Iron Flat Iron... not sure what I expected for a "green salad", but it it had green apple, grapes, sweet potato, lettuce, and celery and was stupendous! as was the main course as well. My husband and I checked this place out on a Friday night for happy hour, which only goes til 5 on Fridays. Having never been here before, I wasn't sure what to expect, but was pleasantly surprised by the cozy stone basement vibe going on. I also loved the vintage plates they used! For drinks we ordered mini cocktails, but am blanking on the specific name...Buffalo something or other...super tasty and awesomely priced at $5 for happy hour. Went for dinner with friends .. and in contrast to a lot of complaints about their service ours wasn't bad at all .. it was rather good. Maybe 'coz it were just regular hours .. or may be our good day :) But the food .. well it was alright and it was great .. we opted for a lot of vegetarian things they were just okay .. the meat was great. The bocce rolls were good .. pretzel wasn't .. tater tots with gravy were not either. The crispy duck wings were to die for .. and a friend ordered pan roasted pork chop which he was praising all the while :) So kinda hit n miss. Did I say the crispy duck wings were to die for ?? well trust me .. they are a must must try .. that korean sweet sticky sauce .. crispy wings yet so moist .. to die for .. Let's start at arrival. Stood at hostess stand for easily 5 minutes ( I bet it was closer to 10) with the staff walking by over and over again. Not a single comment or welcome. Then finally after stopping (actually to note, not welcoming us in any manner), with a half empty restaurant and being on-time for our reservation, we were seated at a horrid table with a handrail from the adjacent steps hitting me in the shoulder. I asked to be moved, which was odd since there were many alternative tables. Menu was nice and had a decent set of interesting sounding dishes. We each ordered the starter-main-desert package. Timing was interesting as a different server tried to deliver our main before our starter showed up. Our primary server stopped them to take it back and put it under a heat lamp for a couple minutes until serving our starter, and then delivered the main. All of this was reason so far for a 1 star. However, we haven't discussed the food yet. Getting to the food did not do anything to change the experience. I ordered the Wild Mushroom Stroganoff. I have never had to use the term 'dry' to describe stroganoff, but here is a first. It was dry enough to choke a moose, with an excessive salt burden. Oh...and the Wild Mushroom part amounted to 5 small chunks, about 1/4 inch in size, of burnt up mushrooms (I actually didn't know them as mushrooms until I looked at the menu to figure what it was) sprinkled on top of the noodles that rested themselves on a flavorless white creme sauce. Seriously, a can of mushroom soup poured on the bottom, with noodles laid on top would have been more flavorful. It is Christmas season and being in the giving spirit, I gift the Gilded Unicorn 2 stars over what truly was a poorly earned 1 star. read more

Everything I hoped for. Absolutely difficult to pick from the menu. I wanted 4 entrees which means a second trip is coming...couldn't decide on which salad. Went with server's recommendation on the Breakfast wedge. Genius idea. Home fries, waffle croutons, maple/egg yolk vin. Bacon, of course. Onions, pickled apple julienne strips. Did the pork chop and tater tot casserole for dinner. Tater tot casserole was stupid good. Tots, brisket (not smoked, probably braised wet or dry), mushroom gravy (?), aged cheddar, jalapeño. Gtfoh. So good. Pork chop was filet mignon tender. Maple mustard was fully necessary. Gouda mac was saucy, but not runny. Could have housed an entire plate of the greens. Had the sassafras bitters gin drink. Normally I do bourbon drinks but I like the look of the clear spirits menu. Chartreuse in it was amazing, and done with this drink, it was out of sight. Kathleen said it was her favorite and she was correct. Candy in a glass. Kathleen was our bartender and server. She was busy due to skeleton staff and the fact that she's banging out craft cocktails AND serving. Food was timed well. She gave us a little extra of her time towards the end of dinner. It was nice of her to slow down for a few. I know how it is. I'm a transplant from Scottsdale, AZ and Montana. I'm industry. Honestly I think my industry experience helped me to appreciate this spot even more. Their drink list may read like a foreign language to you, but just ask. You like sweet? Tart? Floral? Citrus? Please get into their list, it's super well-thought out and varied. Atmosphere is come-as-you-are or dress up. Honestly, either one would fit here. It's a very disarming place. The atmosphere: eclectic and fun vibe with interesting artwork, rich toned colors, a rock walled down-stairway entrance and overall superb underground atmosphere. Seating choices range, and I like that there is a quiet, almost hideaway section in the back, (albeit heavily trafficked due to bathrooms location) which offsets the more lively atmosphere at the front. The bar is small and has limited seating approximately 6 chairs). The food: Ranged from just ok to delicious, depending on what we ordered. Our 11-top table all agreed that the peanut butter pie was delicious and that the bacon cured salmon was succulent, with exceptional plating. Nailed it, especially the complexity of flavors! Other runners up were the sparkle burger (oh that bun!) and the katsu cordon bleu (YUM and crunch!)...delish! I do not recommend the tater tot casserole which boasted of wild mushrooms on the menu yet the actual dish had only one lonely mushroom (not an exaggeration) or the bison meatloaf which was dry and lacked flavor...and this was surprising because flavor was a strong suit in all the other dishes. Note; The steak knives were awkwardly inefficient, thus making the pork chops difficult to cut. The service: was mixed. Our table was large and a little bit loud. Our waitress seemed hand picked for us. She was a gem, beaming with vitality, laughter and kindness. She did a great job taking care of the demands of a large group without making us feel like a burden and I so appreciated that. Unfortunately, our reservation was only honored in part. We arrived to a completely full restaurant and waited at least 30 min to be seated. There wasn't much room to wait so half of our party was standing on the stairs. It would have been standard (and appreciated) to have comped our table with a couple of appetizers, especially in light of the reservation policy (see next paragraph), but nothing was offered. The reservation policy requires an advance $100 non-refundable deposit to be used toward the food. Any unused portion is credited back on a restaurant gift card. It's a little inconvenient, but I get it. However; if an establishment asks that of the patrons, they should provide the actual reservation instead of "taking a gamble and losing" which is what the manager, Mindy, politely and apologetically told us had happened. Again, I get it--it's a busy place and it's hard to predict what tables will finish when. So Gilded Unicorn, if you are reading, please consider ways to make the reservation a smoother process and when things don't work out, by all means, offer your patrons a gesture of compensation. It makes all the difference and keeps us coming back, not to mention giving your hard working servers the benefit of starting off right with their tables for things that were not within their control. read more

The food was fairly delicious, but some entrees seemed to have a lot going on. Maybe a little too much. The cocktail I had was not so great. The service was good. What ultimately dropped this from a 4 to a 3 was the area we were seated in. It seems as though they are trying to squeeze every last opportunity for a table out of their space. Our table was next to a closet door (I could open the door as the knob was by my shoulder) and elevators. The whole space was weird. I could see making some kind of barrier or built-ins (bench with tables you can slide together or separate) on the non-closet side and blocking some of the bathroom/elevator traffic with a screen or something. Not impressed at all. We came for Inlander Restaurant Week to try something new, but it will be also the last time we go there. The waitress was not really attentive and got annoyed after we had 2 dishes go back. My wife ordered a salad with a separate dressing on the side because of some dietary restrictions. When the salad came there was the poppy seed dressing on the salad and the extra ordered dressing was on the side. Who eats a salad with two different dressings. When the salad came back it looked like the majority of the salad were the pieces you normally cut and toss. Our friend had the fried chicken and waffles. The chicken was completely undercooked and raw so we had to have that go back as well. The waitress was completely annoyed. This was a great discovery in Spokane especially for a restaurant located downstairs from a hotel. We got take out to enjoy a beer outside at a nearby brewery. So this is a food review not focusing on atmosphere and service. I got the pork chop which was done perfectly and came with Mac-n-cheese and kale+bacon as sides. The sides were tasty but the pork chop was excellent. My girlfriend got beef stroganoff and swears the noodles were home made. Everything was great for roughly $20 per meal. PRO-TIP: After 10pm 7 days a week is happy hour on drinks and select food items! I've been here twice and have loved my food and service every time! While another time, I didn't enjoy my drink (because I misread the ingredients, not because it was poorly made) and reluctantly asked for a replacement. I hate being that person. The waitress had zero problems with me asking for a different drink and made me feel better about my poor life choice and my now "high-maintenance" request. There was also no additional charge for it and I appreciated her quality of service very much. The ambience here is so unique. It is located in the basement of one of Spokane's oldest hotels and used to be an old speakeasy - which the menu is catered to the era and what was commonly available and eaten during the 1920s. It also used to be the place where the coal was stored and the furnace to heat the hotel was located! Pretty neat! It's got a slight german dungeon feel to it and overall is SO cozy. I went to Gilded Unicorn last Saturday for dinner and had the worst experience with my partner. We walked in expecting to wait a while because on their website it stated the next available table would be in an hour or so. We got seated in 15min which was nice but should be adjusted on the website. We weren't greeted at our table for about 15min as well, when the male server kept passing by our table multiple times. He finally stops by to not even say hi but say the specials and ask if we are ready to order. As a server myself, I already knew this was gonna be a bad experience. Ignores us a few more times even when we stack the menus and make it clear we would at least like to order a drink and appetizer. After about another 10min he comes around and asks us what we want with no enthusiasm or care. We get our drinks AFTER the first entree comes out? Don't understand that especially when the restaurant slowed down by a lot. The only two things we enjoyed were the garlic bread rolls and cesar salad (appetizers) but how can you mess up that right? Eventually our meals come out, the portions are horrible and neither were good. They weren't worth the money or time simply. Something I could have easily made at home, but with more flavor and creativity. On top of it all, we stacked our plates and made it clear we were done and he continued to ignore us. Mind you, didn't even ask how our meal was, if he could get us anything else, so on. Why is he a server? You know it wasn't just our table because the two other parties next to us were also ignored and we even talked to them about the slow and horrible service. It was evident and sad. Wish I got his name, but no name tags!! lol He had his hat backyards which also wasn't very professional but hey that's their standards obviously. Something that also needs to be communicated as a server is that for the appetizer bread rolls having the marina or cheese sauce is not included in the appetizer price but an extra price per sauce. When we were asked what sauce we wanted by the server he did not add "Oh that's extra, is that gonna be okay?" Simple improvements. My advice, to pass this one up. It was happy hour so my friend and I were pretty excited. She ordered this one called the schnozberry but I think it was named something else on HH. For food we ordered a myriad of HH items since they were all reasonably priced or so we thought but when they came out we were disappointed by the size of all except the mac and cheese. We ordered the mac and cheese, deviled eggs, duck wings, and the pigs in a blanket. Mac and cheese was good but not amazing, deviled eggs had this weird flavor profile going on that didn't work at all, duck wings were good, different, and only came with two, and the pigs in a blanket were just ehhh. Finally got to try this whimsical hole in the wall! It's been on my bucket list for a while and their menu always sounded so interesting and different. We were a small group looking for good food and drink before our event at the arena. We planned ahead and made reservations a week ahead of time. The first looks of the restaurant once inside was cozy and rustic. The staff seemed a little stretched thin and the hostess was definitely new. We stood waiting for a greeting for a while and then come to find our reservation got all mixed up and we had to wait to be seated while they figured it out. Really put us back with our timeframe for event. The food overall was very good. Again the staff definitely lacking.. our food took a very long time to table and our server was hard to find and not very actively attentive. Scene: The scene is great, it's a very cool bar overall. The paintings and the theme are a little confusing? I'm not sure what they're trying to accomplish? At least there actually is a unicorn on the mantle! Food: Way too over priced. Their happy hour is stellar, as with most of the Good Food Groups restaurants. But the deviled eggs are probably the worst thing I have ever eaten. They tasted like they were made too many days in advanced. Drinks: Again, happy hour is killer. Let's be clear: this is a bar, not a restaurant. Let's also be clear, that I don't often write reviews but felt this was warranted. I'll start with the good, because it's brief: the Espresso en Español was a fantastic cocktail. Añejo tequila, coffee liqueur, and cocoa powder come together in this delicious coffee-forward drink. Espresso Martini lovers should give this a try. I also ordered a classic Manhattan with Buffalo Trace, which was nicely balanced. I had sips of a friends' Gilded Old Fashioned, which was done well. The Burning Bush is a Mezcal-forward cocktail ordered by my fiancé, and that was also delicious. The Benny's Blues is a riff on a Whiskey Sour, and also enjoyable. The only knock I have on the bar service was the delay between ordering and actually drinking, as we waited and waited for our rounds to come out. The bad: the food! My Wild Mushroom Stroganoff came out cold, and lacked any kind of flavor. Like, we're talking store-bought Alfredo sauce and frozen peas kind of bad...I can't confirm those are the ingredients but they may as well have been. My friends' Sparkle Burger looked good, but then he bit into it and the center was a mushy red, completely undercooked. Another friend got the Unicorn Mac 'n Cheese, which was colder than my cold stroganoff. The bright spot of the meal was the Tater-Tot Casserole, which is how you know this is a bar, and not a restaurant. I certainly would not trust trying the more expensive items on the menu, when the easy pastas and burger came out as bad as they did. 3 stars for this one because our waitress was great, the medieval vibe was fun, and the drinks were done right.
