My friends and I went to Gill's because we were craving seafood and I had heard good things. It was a bit of a drive out of our way but it was such a charming little place and the food was so good that we didn't mind at all. When we got there it was just starting to warm up so we asked to sit on the patio even though it wasn't set up yet (chairs no set out, no place settings, ect) but the staff was super friendly and set it up right away for us with no hesitation. The only really negative was that it seemed a cat or something had slept on our table and despite them wiping it down there was still cat hair on the table, ewww. We loved the clam chowder and no glass ever went empty here, with the attentive staff keeping our table stocked but not hovering or being intrusive. I got the deep fried prawns, one friend got the clam cutlets, and the other two got the fish and chips. Everyone was thrilled with their meals and had no complaints at all. Beautiful view and we loved watching the boats come in and people walking off the docks to come get lunch. This is now our go-to spot whenever we are in town. read more

We had high hopes for this place, but I have to say that our meal was somewhat disappointing. We would have ordered fresh oysters, as this area is the "oyster basket" of the state, but there were none on the menu. You can get anything fried, though. I got an oysters and clams combo, my colleague got the fish tacos. The clams were like rubber, and the breading flavorless. The fried oysters were OK, but can't beat fresh like that. I tried one of the fish tacos, and it was lackluster. Service, though gets 5 stars. They were friendly and attentive. Gill's might be worth a second visit to try out their other dishes, but with so much good seafood available in the area, I'm not sure we will try again. read more

The service was super slow. Got there about 1:45 in the afternoon they were busy but not crazy busy. Took forever for someone to take our order. Ordered fish n chips to share and two cups clam chowder. Clam chowder had no clams in it or potatoes. Tasted like flour. Took about 30 minutes more after getting soup to get food. Fish was ok. Coleslaw ok but nothing special. Then charged us 7.75 tax on a $22 order. Questioned it of course. They corrected it to $1.74 tax. Huh. Big difference? This place never disappoints with its breakfast. They have some of the best country potatoes I've ever had and I absolutely love their biscuits and gravy. If you're the seafood type you've also got to try the crab benedict, it's definitely worthwhile. The service here is also always friendly, they'll even crack a joke or two if you get the right server which I love. Took a bit to have our order taken, did get checked in on a few times though. Got the grilled crab sandwich for $17. The crab was probably good, but all I could taste was the cheese. We ordered the seafood chowder in cups. Despite the fact that they put mushrooms in the chowder, it was actually pretty good. Better than the one I had in Bodega Bay. The onion rings came out huge and crispy, really good for a seafood shack. Overall the staff was fairly pleasant, we paid $90 for four people to include onion ring app, 2 cups of chowder, 1 bowl of chowder, lunch salad, fries (you get nothing with your crab sandwich, but you get sides for other orders much cheaper, odd), French dip (average, it's a seafood place but one of our teens doesn't care for much seafood), and 2 grilled crab sandwiches. read more

I had the best Crab Eggs Benedict of my life here. I always order Benedict at breakfast but this one was one for the books. Decent amount of crab and seemed to be freshly made english muffin. Came with potatoes cooked with bell pepper onion and mushroom. They had a great flavor and were perfectly cooked. Hollandaise was perfectly flavored and cooked, best I've had in the area. Staff was friendly and the wait time was short but we did go on a weekday and was warned on the weekends it tends to be busier. If it's a nice day you can sit outside right on the bay. The food is great, the service is okay, but do not under any circumstances arrive for breakfast hungry. You need to eat before you go and expect to wait for your food for at least 30 minutes. By the time your food is up, your server will probably be ignoring you, like she did my husband and me today, probably because she could feel the negative pall descending up on our table while the conversation waned and the feelings of impatience waxed along with the growing frustration as those around us who received their food as we were seated, finished and left, while we continued to wait. And wait. This was my fourth visit because I kept thinking how could this possibly happen again. After the second time and the third time and now the fourth (and final) time, the answer doesn't change. This morning my husband was convinced that no, this will be fine, it won't happen again. The only thing that saved me (and hubby) from the hangries was a fig bar I ate on our drive there. There were ample tables available when we arrived and within about 3 minutes we had a steaming cup of coffee before us and our order taken. Things were looking good. And then we remembered the Seinfeld episode where the rental car agent could take the reservation, just not hold the reservation. Same here. Our server could take our order, but could she actually serve us our order? Nope. We have loved Gills by the Bay for decades. EVERYONE from out of town wants to go there while they are here. GREAT food and variety of menu choices. One of the best chowders in Humboldt county. BAD alcohol choices, Bud or ?? and boxed wine only. Plan on drinking their home made iced ice, water or soda. I keep waiting to fins a restaurant that I can give a great review. Unfortunately, it hasn't happened in quite awhile. Went here yesterday for lunch. Had to wait 20 minutes to get waited on. My sister's salad came with tartar sauce on the side; she had asked for thousand island dressing. The tartar sauce she used on her grilled sole, which she said was "okay", but not great. She didn't care for the coleslaw. I had the Monte Cristo and it too was just ok. My water glass never got refilled. By the time the server came back to ask us if everything was ok, we were almost done eating. After eating we waited 5 to 10 minutes for the check to come. It didn't, so we just walked up to the register and paid. While we were eating, I watched one of the customers, undoubtedly a regular, walk behind the counter, grab a styrofoam cup, and dip it into the ice maker, dirty hands and all to get himself a cup of ice. So, mediocre food, poor service, and dirty hands in the ice. Probably be awhile before I go back. read more

This place next to a fishing village of some sort next to the fishing boat harbor.! ! ! Asked for a substitute of bowl clam chowder instead of the regular chilli that was on the menu. Nothing special. They charged 2 dollars extra. The bowl size, literally, I mean literally, the size of a tea cup in a chinese restaurant. Couldn't find any clams, but it was a sugary and milky broth. I have eaten here in the past and it has been decent. Today I ordered a fresh crab sandwich. 40 minutes after I ordered it, arrived it was disguised as a tuna fish sandwich... I let the waitress know this was not my order and she conceded that it was a mistake (no big deal) she dashed back with MY sandwich which had an ample amount of crab that was a tasty combination of mayo, minced onion and celery. It was served on sliced white bread, no lettuce, or tomato or pickle or any mayo on the bread. A very PLAIN white bread crab sandwich for $16.00. I was not impressed. The Cajun blackened sole was a modest portion, suited for lunch perhaps and according to my husband just okay. The place was packed on a Saturday and service was very slow. I will go back because normally the food is good and the service better but today they hit a jag in service and quality. read more

I love this place but today was dissapointed. ....I understand there's breakfast time and lunch time there, now. What I don't understand is why we couldn't have a freaking crab sandwich 20 minutes before lunch. They had cracked crab for omelets and toast but couldn't make us a sandwich. We didn't want the fries and agreed to have breakfast potatoes, but no the cook couldn't make a sandwich with the same crab as the omelets and toasted on the same grill. So I guess that's a positive note?!?!?! The presentation was pitiful...At least the plate wasn't covered with parsley! Like it would have made a difference. The chowder was WAY TOO creamy...Almost sweet. The service was mediocre (the waitress never came back after delivering our food! Someone else delivered the bill!?!?!?!) No refills on iced tea offered. The decor looks as though it has been there for a LONG time...Just like the little old ladies who work there. This is why I never take recommendations from friends on places to eat. I won't be back and I wouldn't recommend this place to any of MY friends! For a delicious crab sandwich, The Cafe Waterfront is still the best place for taste and presentation...It comes on a croissant with a lovely fruit cup. read more

we were steered here by a fortuna local at the doggie park. she rhapsodized over the fish and good vibe so we gave it a try and are REALLY UPSET that we leave tomorrow and can only eat here once! i had the captains platter and was blown away. excellent fried shrimp and fish. tasty crunchy fried oyster, and a lovely delicate local fish filet sauteed perfectly. the salad was thoughtfully prepared and the dressing homemade. the coleslaw crunchy and flavorful. i really wish i was staying another day because i'd order the same meal. oh. ....and fairly priced. read more

I'm not really sure how to rate this ...since this isn't a big city but a small town. I've had 2-3 meals out during my time there and wasn't impressed.... I came here after stopping by a visitor's center and the lady there told me to try this local joint and it was good. So i was super pumped to finally have some great food as i hoped while in town. I arrived and it was quite lovely. Lots of colorful plants decorating the outdoor seating area. I was very disappointed they didnt' offer crab cocktail or some appetizer although they had a crab sandwich. I decided to order a fishermen's platter (deep fried) sicne they didn't have any grilled fish. It was 2 pieces of fish, 2 shrimp, and 1 oyster all deep fried. i'm not sure what batter they use but it was sooooo thick. i ended up removing all batter and just eating the seafood. It also came with a salad. Nothing interesting. But it's a small town so you can't compare it with a big city. But how hard is it to make a decent batter & use some seasonings? hmm...thought that was cooking 101. read more

Have been spending time in this area lately and enjoying discovering Gill's menu. For breakfast, the Crab Benedict is amazing and the pancakes are crazy fluffy. At lunchtime, the oyster shooters are awesome and the Sandy Beach sandwich (bay shrimp, bacon, green onions and cheese on grilled sourdough) is super yummy.
