This a fun laid-back coastal restaurant where our group had breakfast. Our server was very kind and was efficient on bringing our coffee and food! Service was on point! We had a lot of time to kill so we figured we could wait. lmaoooo what a mistake because it wasn't just the meal prep that was slow. it took forever for us to even get our menus to begin with, to call someone to take our order, and of course for our food to arrive. The service was all around kind of lousy; our waitress seemed annoyed the whole time we asked questions when she was taking our order. For a restaurant that seemed to take everything so slowly, I have no idea why she was so impatient with us and seemed to be rushing our party to order. The table next to ours ordered after us and got their food before us. Our waitress didn't bring out a salad that came with our meal as well as a side cole slaw, so we had to ask her for it. She seemed surprised and actually carefully inspected our table (as if we had gotten it and were lying to her??). She eventually admitted that she actually totally forgot to bring it out with our meal. In terms of the food, nothing stood out except for the hot crab sandwich. The chowder is very good. Very rich! There's an herb in it I couldn't place which made it quite different from New England clam chowder. The fried oysters had a nice light crispy batter. They weren't served with any sauce though. I'd like a horseradish sauce. Just sayin. His hamburger looked sad and he said it tasted like it looked. The fries were your standard. So somethings shine. Y'ALL. This legit feels like my first REAL meal of the whole trip. I've been wanting to try seafood the whole time but restaurants have been few and far between so far. Now that I'm in California there seem to be more options. There is something about eating a REAL meal. Where you can tell it's real ingredients , put together and cooked, not just something frozen and heated up in a box. I got the clam chowder, and a shrimp and bacon grilled cheese I was worried I wasn't going to be able to eat the chowder but it was creamy, and with the crackers, it like sticks to your ribs good. I will say, people are different out here. The owner was nice, but I'm pretty sure I heard him making fun of my accent in the back. And I tried to be friendly, but I'm pretty sure that made them think I was stupid, and nobody that worked there would hardly make eye contact with me, although they were super nice to the customers that you could tell ate there regularly read more

I had the opportunity to visit Eureka, Ca for my class reunion and when looking for a place to have breakfast, I found Gill's By The Bay. Their crab omlet and pancakes were fantastic and the staff was friendly and efficient. I wanted to try other items on the menu but didn't have the time. Quality has really declined. Used to be my mom's favorite place to have breakfast, not anymore. Last few times we have eatn there we have been very dissatisfied. *Hot crab sandwich= low amount of crab and flavor was giving "hot mayo". I also like my crab sandwiches to have some nice chunks of crab but it was all very small shreds. *Fries= lukewarm and not crispy. They make large amounts ahead of time and then leave them in a bowl under the heat lamp. *French dip= tastes and looks like very low quality meat. I few weeks back we stayed at a nearby RV park and Gill's was recommended by the staff for lunch or breakfast. It rained a lot that night, but we woke up to a beautiful sunny day. The patio of Gill's was very wet and we overheard the staff saying that they were told to not open the patio for the day. Inside, felt very cozy and there is more room than you might think looking at it from the outside. It feels like a big community and the regulars are known and welcomed by the staff like old friends. The apps and drinks came out very fast but there was a bit of a wait for our main courses. We came at peak weekend lunch/brunch time, and were enjoying the view so didn't mind. Tables with sun umbrellas are surrounded by a well-tended flower garden. Sitting inside the classic diner gives you a good view too, with booths and tables surrounded by interesting nautical decor and big windows. We had the Shrimp Louie salad (big, fresh, with lots of different vegetables, beans and a hard boiled egg) and fish & chips. The fish & chips came with your choice of soup or salad, and the fish was flaky and fresh tasting, fried to a perfect crunch. My favorite place to go on a sunny day! I love having lunch on the patio with the beautiful view of the water and manicured garden. On my last visit, I came in on a weekday afternoon. Seating was very limited even on a weekday, this is a pretty popular place. Service is prompt, but like most places here in Eureka, the food will take a really long time to come out. The waiters are nice and friendly, always there to refill your water or coffee. The facilities are nice and clean. I've had the calamari sandwich, deep fried prawns and English scramble. They were crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. The crab Benedict was ok. The hollandaise sauce was really thin and I was expecting a little more crab on top of the bennys. The eggs were cooked nicely though. The English muffin underneath did not appear to be store bought, which was a bonus on their part. I would probably not order this again. Service was great. We were craving seafood, so as usual, we used Yelp (Thank you Yelp!). By far, this has the best calamari we've tasted and we've travelled extensively throughout the west coast always ordering calamari if it's available on the menu. It was seasoned and breaded to perfection and the calamari melted like butter (no knife needed). I ordered the deep fried oyster, which was good but it did have more batter than I cared for. I would have given them a five-star rating, but we waited 30 minutes to get our food because the cooks forgot to turn on the deep fryer (Our server was amazing). Overall great experience. One HUGE note about the seafood chowder: IT HAS MUSHROOMS in it, and there is NO WARNING on the menu. This needs to be addressed. My daughter has a severe allergy to mushrooms - we're talking epi pen & ambulance & not breathing well. (We've never encountered mushrooms in any seafood chowders before.) Delicious food! Service is spot on too. But what sets this restaurant apart is that combination plus a water view. You feel like you really are on Humboldt Bay. Occasionally you'll see a boat motor by or sea birds flying overhead. It's a smallish restaurant and can get crowded so go off times if you can. read more

I absolutely love this place. My family and I go here for weekend brunch often. My go to dish is the strawberry pancakes with a side of bacon but honestly anything you get is going to be delicious.
