Every time I come up to Humboldt I always make sure that I stop at Gill's by the Bay. I have never been disappointed. The view here is spectacular the weather is mostly good but even if it's bad you still get views. The customer service here is beyond great and the staff is really friendly. When crab is in season, I get the grilled crab sandwich. They have a great variety to pick through on their menu. Will definitely always return here! read more

Side salad was great! Not just iceberg. Mixed Spring with baby corns, beets, garbonzo beans, kidney beans, & carrots. Captains Platter was delicious! Patio dining was so nice. Staff was great. There is a window out on the patio you can buy whole crabs &/or a half pound (or full lb) crab meat. We almost didn't go there because we wanted crab and didn't see it on the menu. 4 stars for the waiting staff since they are nice, 3 or less for the Chowder and captains platter. Had not visited in a while, made trip from Sonoma County to see if it had changed, Chowder is watered down and tasteless lacking seafood items and flavor you used to get home made biscuits with Chowder but no more. Brought a cooler to take some home like used to but No Way am I coming back. The Captains Platter had 3 tiny pieces of fish, 3 small battered shrimp and 1 battered oyster with overcooked fries that we left on the plate. Absolutely dissapointed. I had heard good things about this spot but I was a bit disappointed. The clam chowder was really good but that was the best of it. I had the grilled cod fillet and it was defiantly lacking any flavor or seasoning , very bland. everyone one else ordered fish and chips and most the the fish was over cooked,too long in the deep fryer and the french fries were not eatable due to being cook too long. If you read my reviews you know that I almost never get five stars. This is exactly the kind of place I love to find. I really want to get some seafood but nothing on the breakfast menu appeal to me. I had seen a picture of a crab sandwich and asked the waitress if I could get one even though it was quite early. She went in the kitchen and asked and I was in luck. There is nothing pretentious or fancy here. There was a three-year-old girl running around screaming because it was her birthday at the next table and it was awesome. The grilled crab sandwich came with lots of big chunks of freshly cooked crab. It had a lot of cheese on it which was OK but I think it would be just as good without. I could also see how a lot of people would like it that way. I thought it was yummy. Compared to bay area this was a cheap breakfast. Love this place. Recently came for my third visit. It is a quaint place at the end of the marina with a gorgeous garden nearby. It is always lovely to sit outside regardless of the weather. The staff is lovely and efficient even when it is quite busy. They do have some superb specialties particularly when crab is in season. I highly recommend the hot crab sandwich, Which is griddled with sourdough bread and melted cheese over their homemade crab salad with lump crab. It is literally heaven and is rich...worth the price For the quality. In addition, the brunch dishes are fantastic and filling. The omelettes are superb and come with toast and breakfast potatoes. The biscuits and gravy are hearty and satisfying (though they need an extra light sprinkling of salt to bring out the excellent flavor!). The other sandwiches I have tried, in particular the turkey club sandwich, is also spectacular. Although I have read mixed reviews on the seafood chowder, I personally find this to be quite delightful. It is lighter than some chowders, and might be mistaken as bland, however with an extra sprinkling of salt (my personal preference), it becomes QUITE tasty, filling and satisfying even in cup form. A perfect accompaniment to a sandwich. So while there is sometimes a wait, and sometimes needs a touch of salt, it is well worth it for the locale and quality. Great place on the Bay . The seating outside is lovely flowers and great deck area on the waterfront. The server was really nice, snd of course very busy. As all places these days in need of help! If you're looking for a decent breakfast somewhat on the beach, then this is your spot. They don't have a full bar, so don't expect vodka in your Bloody Mary, but they have mimosas. I got the Spanish omelette and added cheese and avocado. There was quite a bit of salsa on and in the omelette, next time I would get it on the side. I also got a side biscuit and gravy, and it was good. Nothing was excellent, just a decent breakfast place for a decent price. I've been coming here for about 20 years. Its still the best variety and value seafood in the Eureka area that I have found. The food and staff here are consistently good. This is not a high end joint, don't expect to be impressed by the building or decor but it is clean and efficiently run. When we were there last they were having a few crab specials. I wanted a combo louie salad but it was not on the menu. I asked and the answer was sure. It was generous, attractive and fresh. We'll be back soon as our stay in the area is nearly over. It's the place we take visitors for breakfast or lunch. It's on the bay and there is an immediate beach access to view the bay entrance. The food is very good but sometimes the service is slower than elsewhere - after all the are many customers and a large menu. If the Coasties moor next to the outdoor eating area, they get immediate service for take-out. In this area they are heroes; the Coasties are mentioned at least once a month in the local press for having saved stranded hikers or distressed fisher people. My favorite item is the hangtown friesand eggs - yum! The outdoor seating is a delight if the sun is out. Highly recomended, but don't act like a Yankee if the service is slower than you demand. read more

I think we were here at the wrong time on the wrong day? Very late breakfast on July 4th. Arrived at 11:15 without realizing lunch started at 11:30. We were told there could be an additional 15-20 minute wait for lunch as they were switching the kitchen over to the lunch menu, so we ordered breakfast. Mistake, yet the people seated immediately after us DID order lunch and they were served their meal within seconds after our breakfast arrived. 35 minutes from the time we ordered until the meal was served. 1 omelet wonderfully overstuffed with crab, the other 2 woefully under-stuffed. Rubbery scrambled eggs, hard and dry sausage, toast never was served but she apologized twice that it was still in the toaster. 2 lack-luster Bloody Mary's. $102 for 5 people. We'll leave this place to the locals who apparently love it, know what to order and what time to be there.
