As a local and long time visitor to Gillwoods it's always mandatory to bring guests who come visit. It's a true diner and has the comfort and lack of pretentiousness that is sometimes hard to find. The food is consistent and service always exemplary. However, the current menu seems somewhat lacking and has taken on more of an "add-ons" format for items typically included, especially in a breakfast menu. The tables outside are a nice addition, but for me Gillwoods has gone from a good experience with great diner food and atmosphere, to a "meh, maybe we'll go, maybe not." Quality feel good food in a warm atmosphere served by kind, helpful employees. I ordered the chicken fried steak even though I'm a biscuits and gravy guy because the person next to was enjoying it so much. I did not regret that decision. The chicken fried steak was cooked perfectly and smothered in a thick, hot white gravy! It was delicious. The Yukon potatoes were seasoned generously and cooked to a crisp on the outside but still soft on the inside while being cooked thoroughly. My server (Trish? I think) was helpful and attentive. All the staff was buzzing around refilling drinks and cleaning tables immediately after guests left with a smile on their faces. You could tell they all enjoyed working there. Good food and better people are happening there! If you're going wine tasting in the valley I recommend eating a solid breakfast and Gillwood's provided that and more! My love interest is very fond of the area and has her favorite spots in town. She said she been here with her sisters and wanted to bring me so I figured it wasn't just a shot in the dark. Located on the main road downtown is this relatively small Cafe. Street parking available and you kinda gotta get lucky or park on a side street. There's a back alley way as well with a few parking spots along with a nice outdoor seating arrangement for customers. The waitress was ridiculously fun with great great customer service. The food was reasonably priced, well cooked and seasoned. Nothing that stood out for me to recommend but neither of us were let down aside from gf starting from the wrong side of her omelet so the meat was near the rear. The banana pecan pancake stood out now that I recall.. unless banana is the bane of your existence, I think you should give this pancake variant a try, I'll put my name on it. The gentleman that gave us the check was really funny and nice as well, I didn't feel like I was in an uptight establishment but more so a family owned Cafe where all are welcomed. We loved i! Stopped in St. Helena on our way to see the Castello di Amorosa and decided to have breakfast here. It was delicious! We had the salmon special which was generous amounts of salmon on top of a potato fritter patty with avocado and other greens, topped with any egg of your choice. I also ordered one blueberry pancake because they make their own batter and so we split it for "dessert" and the flavor was excellent! I think the fact that it was raining helped us to get seated quickly. So charming inside, absolutely no frills but you can tell by going in that they have that home cooked charm. The portions were big and I just had half my sandwich and some fries at the diner since I was supposed to be eating light before going to the spa. The sandwich was delicious, simple but done right. I've been a customer for years. the last three visits have been very disappointing. The menu items are not coming out like they use to. Not fresh, hash browns sitting somewhere?? under the warning lights? English muffins not cooked!! Corn Beef Hash not grilled crispy, taste like dog food. The manager when he took our plates, didn't even ask if there was a problem? Seeing that the cornbeef hash was not eaten, nor the hasbrowns, nor the English muffins. Very Disappointing after the third visit, (bringing in friends), since change in ownership. Gillwoods was a long time favorite in Napa for breakfast, it was spacious with a large outdoor eating area and had a great healthy menu that was always flavorful. Now in St Helena, it's smaller but more charming and a more intimate setting on Main Street with a in and out door seating options. Being gluten intolerant, for me I can have pancakes and ordered the fruit plate which came with granola and yogurt, and both were excellent, the fruit was all fresh and ripe and the yogurt was of high quality. The pancake was large and I only ordered 1 as it was thick and with local honey, a hearty but sweet treat. The Chai was good and not too hot. My friend had the Chilaquiles and said it was rich, filling and spiced nicely. The seating is limited and several spots were reserved so reservations are a safe bet. One server was over eager to clear my plate when half way done but our main server was very good, patient and had a positive attitude. The food quality is still there the seating is more limited but glad they are still in the valley as a reliable hearty breakfast location. A cute, friendly diner in the middle of St. Helena! I picked this spot due to its proximity to a winery that I'd be visiting later in the day, and also for its reasonable brunch prices (~$15 per item instead of $20+ dishes). I made an order for take-out and the process was very smooth. The employee who took my order made sure to repeat my order back to me to ensure accuracy and also asked if I'd like cutlery to be included. When I arrived at the cafe (which was packed with people enjoying breakfast), I went straight to the coffee counter to pay and pick up my order. The Napa Scramble, Chorizo Omelette, Turkey Reuben, and Belgian Waffle with Strawberries were all yummy choices. All of the food felt relatively light and fresh for a diner brunch - the hash browns were crispy but not oily, and the quality of the fruits and vegetables were good. Portion sizes were large (especially the toast included with the egg dishes). My favorite was the Turkey Reuben sandwich, which had sauerkraut, cheese, turkey, and thousand island on rye. The relative amounts of each ingredient were balanced well so the sandwich wasn't too sweet, dressed, or cheesy - yum! Free street parking (3 hours) is available on the street with Gillwoods Cafe, and on side streets as well. If you want to picnic, you can take-out food to Lyman Park (just a few steps down the street, very clean and with picnic benches and a restroom). COVID protocols aside, they have started to seat in doors at a limited capacity, while still maintaining the outside seating. Masks are required while you wait, although not enforced, but the staff does wear their masks. The food, well the pictures speak for themselves. The corn beef hash was amazing.
