Brisket Bánh mì
Chris S.

Starting with the most important part: the food at Gil's was amazing! Overall the service was very slow (but to be fair it was absolutely slammed for a Thursday night and there was only one person running the register and running food out). Of all the food that we got, the brisket Bánh mì was my favorite with the rice bowl coming as a close second. Lots of flavors and components going in to them, and for a very very reasonable price. It is very refreshing in today's market to see a business hiking up their prices significantly. Most of the items were between $12-14 with a variety of options. While Gils does have some vegetarian options, none of the sandwiches are vegetarian which is a bit of a bummer. They have a decent selection of drinks on tap with some local and some standard commercial beverages. Atmosphere is a nice, outdoorsy, sitting at the table with friends having a drink on a summer day type of energy. It took a fairly long time to get our food, but as I mentioned it's a small kitchen and staff and there was constantly a line of 5-6 people ordering. With that being said, they did a good job considering and on a nice day I don't mind the wait.

Patio area

I loved this little bar. While we were in Ashland, my husband and I went to Gil's two days in a row. The indoors is tiny, but there's a lovely patio with fire pits outside. The bartenders were awesome and their recommendations were top notch. They had a really fantastic berry cider on tap that I loved. We'll be back next time we're in town!

Pork bowl

This was my first local spot I tried in Oregon this year (coming from California) and it was all the feels of being somewhere different. The service was great, the outside tables were great for a summer evening, and the food was delicious. I got the pork bowl and it was so filling. Looks smaller than you think but I couldn't even finish it despite the simple yet tasty flavor. It was a perfect match with chips and guac on the side as well. Highly recommend.

Came in here for a quick beer& an app. This is lively little place with tons of the beers. The bartender & server were great! Got our jalapeño poppers quickly. They were very delicious hot.W/ ranch. Check it out if you're in the area I

The Grinder

My husband is obsessed with their Grinder! Packed full of flavor and the bread is perfect. I had their chicken Caesar salad, and it was good (not great), but would have preferred sliced chicken breast to the wet shredded. We will definitely be coming back next trip to Ashland. The service is top notch and their patio heaters and fire pits are the perfect touch.

Cubano!with hint of curry
Craig G.

With San Diego based Reggae bands adorning the welcoming Patio with melodic rhythms... and a cool mint and cucumber seltzer to take the edge off the warm late summer afternoon, we settled in for a big ol lunch having just returned from a brilliant Crater Lake excursion. Bae runs up the street to get a bag of chips and returns just in time for the sandwiches to arrive. We got the brisket ban Mi and cubano to split and share. Bitting into that cubano I tasted a hint of curry. I liked the crunchy bread the savory cheese melting into the slab of ham. Well I was certain my cubano was vastly superior to the Ban Mi. I was mistaken! Happily! The Ban Mi had Au jus that was a stand in for pho broth. This was pretty interesting when taking a bit of the sandwich and dunking it into the broth like a roast Beef sandwich. The slightly over thick bread began to melt and assume a less prominent position on the palette letting the carrots cilantro radishes and onion provide the CRUNCH factor. Everyone said these samis are the best in Ashland. Who am I to argue! Assuming this is a new vacation destination somewhere in the future, I will definitely do my AhhhNold imitation from Terminator... "I'll Be Back!"

Brisket Banh Mi with Pho Dip
Barbara H.

The Brisket Banh Mi with Pho Dip was incredible! After living in los angels & Las Vegas, I couldn't find a banh Mi sandwich that could compare, but I found it at Gil's! The brisket was incredibly juicy & savory & The baguette was crisp. The Pho Dip was a nice touch. I definitely will be back again for this sandwich. The restaurant itself was cute, super dog friendly & there's fire places outside. Staff was friendly & attentive. 5 Stars Oh & don't forget to get an Apple Outlaw Cider!

Super cool tractor glass

I'm for it. Good selection of beers, super cute glasses and lots of outdoor seating. I forget how many taps they actually had, but it was probably 40 or more - a good selection to be sure. Nothing super domestic so to speak (you know, bud light) but they did have a couple lagers and pilsners for those that like a lighter style. I definitely enjoyed my apricot IPA. All seating is outside right now, but I'm not even sure if they ever have seating inside - the inside space is small. Decent number of tables outside and fire pits. We also got wings - with both buffalo sauce and dry rub. I liked the buffalo sauce better, but both definitely hit the spot. Oh yeah, and their glasses are super cute - it took all of me to not go purchase one (they are for sale, but the last thing I need I another glass).

Off the main drag. Funky and eclectic. Great place to relax and discover new brews. Food selection is small but diverse.

Excellent beer selection! Fast, friendly service. I just wish there were more tables (possibly along the driveway between Ruby's and Gil's).

We're meeting the family in Ashland for hubby's Diamond Year. We're the first to arrive, so we went…read moreout for a walk, in search of food. We looked at the menu, it said something about a 'creek'. We're sold! As we entered the restaurant, we were asked: "Would you prefer seats by the creek or inside. It was too dark inside to read the menu, and anything to do with water, I'm there. I found the perfect table, where it's closest to the creek waves, but we were soon have to move, because the restaurant shares the outside tables with the restaurant next door. I was sort-of disappointed. The waiter, and the excellent BBQ Ribs & Kettle Chips took that away! Hubby's Recession Burger and Classic Fries were also just as good. He also ordered a side of black bean chili. Service was exceedingly friendly. Waiter was very informative about the direction, how to get to the other side of the creek, it was a perfect hike for us, on that beautiful afternoon. UPDATE: Our dinner was so good last night, we ended back to the other side of the creek, to Louie's for lunch! Our waiter recognized us. We sat closer to the wall, almost the same table as we sat last night, too, with a different waitress, who is just as pleasant and friendly as our waiter. This time hubby ordered a BLT (smoky bacon piled HIGH, and I mean piled HIGH) and Kettle Chips, while I settled for Spring rolls. The spring rolls were not large, they're like half of a normal size. His BLT came on a multi grain bread and just the right amount of mayo. We both agreed, it was the BEST BLT sandwich in the world! (We've traveled the world, we know!) But to top things off they gave him a complimentary, a chocolate lava cake as it was hubby's birthday. Thank you!

My friend and I were treated very badly at this restaurant. I am very forthright about what I need,…read morebeing a diabetic and asked for a skinny margarita. When it came it was too sweet and I tried to tell the waiter that and he threw an absolute fit and asked us to leave, saying I was being rude. We were shocked. Neither my friend nor I thought I was being rude. I didn't say or do anything offensive. When I asked how I was being rude, the waiter's response was, "do you hear yourself?" I even apologized and said if I had offended somehow, I was sorry. My friend said she didn't think I was being rude. As we rose to leave, I told the waiter maybe he was too sensitive and that was the problem. He kept yelling at me to look at myself in the mirror. The cook had our food ready and was about to give it to us and I said we were leaving because the waiter was kicking us out, and the cook's response was "good." He hadn't even been there. The waiter obviously had a huge insecurity chip on his shoulder to be so rude to a paying customer for some imagined slight. But then I messaged the owner and she gave me some BS about "heartfelt" apologies. I asked if we could come have the meal that we were denied and her response was "All things considered, I think it best you explore another Ashland dining experience." Then I saw all the one star reviews on Yelp and her exact same "heartfelt" response to all of them while absolutely nothing changed, and I realized the problem is the owner. She doesn't care about customer experience. The staff act the way they do because she allows it. Any other restaurant would have offered dessert or appetizers or something to make up for the bad experience, which is what good restaurants do. I am 63 and have eaten at restaurants all over the world, and never been treated like this. But obviously other restaurants have higher standards for their staff and themselves. There are too many restaurants where people are courteous and accommodating, especially to customers with health issues, to put up with the low standards at this place. We went next door to Green Leaf and were able to ask for modifications in the menu and treated with the utmost care. And to the owner, please don't bother with your standard response of communicating our concerns to your staff, etc., etc. We are perfectly aware of what that's worth.

As a side note, they put their tip options reversed from highest to lowest left to right as "25%, 20%, 18%" which I find almost intentionally trying to get people to click the highest percentage if they don't pay attention. Plus having the minimum option be 18 contributes to the toxic tipping trends. Service: this was the area that struggled the most. When we arrived our party was waiting by the host stand that said to wait to be seated for a long time along with several other parties. While I understand wanting to spread our seating, no one even acknowledged us for nearly 10 minutes leaving us and the other parties wondering if they even noticed us. Once seated, we not checked on by our server, only saw at order and check. Important because we had a couple missing items from our order that we had to flag down multiple people for because we would tell someone who would "check on it" for us but still never brought out our missing items and maybe would have been noticed if we were checked on. Plus never had our waters refilled or anything of that. Drinks: these were either good or meh, with some of the coffee drinks like cappuccino or latte being well made, whereas others like the chai really just tasted like milk with some spice on top. Food: this was just about average. There was nothing too significant to report here, but it didn't exactly feel special or real reason to go again. To be fair, it was popular downtown as the weather was nice and the outside seating was popular, but for peak tourist and graduation season, there certainly should be more staffing to avoid issues.
