Since there aren't too many great options in Gilroy, we have been going to Ginger Cafe and taking our friends there for the past couple of years. However, their quality of food has gone down a lot and therefore its not too surprising why its been so empty lately. For example we ordered the coconut soup and asked if it could be a little less spicy. The waiter confirmed it would not be a problem, however, it was very obvious that they added too much water to the soup they already had, making it tasteless and watery. It was absolutely terrible and we barely ate it. When we mentioned this to the waiter who explained the situation to his manager, they didn't even bother to remove the charge from our bill. Also another thing that I dislike is that they almost always bring one person's entrée much later than the other person's. Food for all guests should be brought at the same time, it makes no sense for one person to start eating while the other watches. read more

Why I've never been I don't even know! I had to take my kid to the Nike outlet to pick up some football cleats only to find out that they haven't carried them in a few years. Nice..let's change that online then because I ended up doing exactly what I was trying to avoid and that was hunt. We were handed menus and drink orders taken. Wanted some hot tea and they had 3 to choose from...very nice! Also, they serve dim sum ALL DAY...score! We ordered the following: 1. Appetizer Sampler: which came with 2 of each of the following: bok choy dumplings, ha gao, ham siu gok, crab puffs and steamed pork buns. All delicious! 2. Chicken Siu Mai: comes 4 to an order. Delicious 3. Squid Ink Lobster Dumblings: comes 4 to an order. Squid ink is infused in the dumpling wrapper and gives a very subtle flavor. Would order again! 4. Crispy Chicken: Served with chili oil and skin crispy and meat tender and seasoned well. 5. Lemon Grass Lamb Chops: comes 4 ribs to an order. Delicious. Tender and seasoned well. Son approved. 6. Beef Chow Fun: I always request it to be made dry so less oil. Noods were delicious and beef tender. We will come again as I often crave dim sum but never quit make it to brunch when most are served. Everyone was pleasant and eager to wait on our every need. Bathrooms clean and well stocked. The place is quite spacious and ceiling are tall. I have been eating at this restaurant for nearly two decades. Growing up my mom worked at the hospital down the street and would bring home mango chicken and rice for my siblings and I. As an adult this is still my go-to order as well as their dumpling selection. They always accommodate my online orders as well paying attention to any special requests for specific dipping sauces/condiments/ or how I would like my dish made. My last online order the mango chicken was different than I am used to regarding quantity and amount of sauce, but that will not stop me from ordering from here in for the foreseeable future. It was the first time I was dissatisfied, and was probably just an off day. I love this restaurant for sentimental value as well as quality. My favorite in town for Asian fusion. read more

We were there for lunch today. Getting seated was easy. Overall service is decent. Two servers were nice. Our main server though, was always in a rush. She asks for an order then hurries away. The food was alright. The dim sum menu is inaccurate. Needs to be redone at least such as the pork siu mai having shrimp in the description and even mushrooms in the photo when they do not. Pictures in the menu are inaccurate for the sizes as well. The ha gao and squid ink lobster dumpling were pretty small and sticky like when they are steamed too long? The lobster dumpling was kind of sweet having a cream cheese like taste. Otherwise, the taste of the pork the siu mai was good and as expected bur the sausage was unexpected haha. The pork dumpling is a pork xiao long bao, the ginger and scallion vinegar sauce and the soup inside were delicious! We also got a crab cake which tasted decent but as crispy as I want! I also got the crispy tofu with mandarin sauce from the lunch menu - it tasted great but with no crisp at all sadly. I found the tamarind seafood hotpot to be lacking in tamarind but generous in seafood - it was more a salty seafood soup. The salty fish fried rice was bomb - just enough saltiness without tasting like ocean! The lamb with steamed bun was satisfying, the lamb was juicy and the buns were soft. So disappointed to be writing a new review but the quality of Ginger Cafe has gone down to the point where we will not be ordering from them again. Last several times we ordered, the chicken has either been stringy or super chewy....Definitely not cooked right, and this time, the chicken was absolute mush. You can squish it with your fingers. Had the texture of chicken puree, but it definitely isn't pureed. For the price of their food, being one of the most expensive Chinese restaurants around, I expect at least something edible. read more

We ended up ordering: *Chicken Curry - this came with an egg fried rice with chicken curry and included lots of veggies like carrots, beans & eggplant. The curry was coconut based and was really yummy! The chicken was also soft which was nice. *Shrimp Dish - I forgot the name of this but it was a fried shrimp dish with onions in a sweet garlicy sauce. I really loved this dish and it came with egg fried rice as well. The dishes also came with a beef soup and veg soup but did not enjoy these at all. However, the food was really good. I wanted to get some dumplings for lunch and I remembered my friends suggesting this place. You won't believe how super fast the service here is, we didn't have to wait for anything at all. Nayeli, our server was amazing, she was nice, courteous and very thoughtful, she offered to pour my drink in a to go container so I could take it with me when I was done with my meal. The food was delicious. I landed up taking just one of the steamed dumplings cuz there was lunch specials that comes with soup and rice. The soup of the day was chicken and corn soup, even though I'm not a soup person, I enjoyed this one. The Tofu mushroom was super delicious too. I wish I had tried more of the dumplings cuz the Chicken Sui Mai was soo tender, juicy and delicious. Best part was, it was a great portion of food so just the few dishes was very filling! I think there was only one other time I've given two stars on yelp. Needless to say I was disappointed. I will preface this review with some positives and context. This used to be my favorite restaurant since I was a kid. It seems to have gone through a few switches since then so I'm prone to the bias of how good it used to be. Additionally, I'm also more often than not at the Sunnyvale location. Service was also good. Our server helped us with everything needed without any issue. Now the issues I had were the amount of flies hovering around our seating. It was a battle to keep flies away from the food. The vegetable dumplings used to be huge and fantastic. Now they were small and measly looking. Same goes for the squid ink lobster dumplings. We got the miso sea bass which is typically really good at other restaurants. There was a weird texture and a slightly off taste. All in all, I will be back to confirm if the sunnyvale location has lost its touch as well. read more

We had the crab wontons for an appetizer and we shared sweet-and-sour pork with a side of rice. The wontons could've used a dip which they didn't come with, but they were very good and they used fresh crab. Sauce is delicious but a little salty, so it goes better with steamed rice, as suggested by our nice waitress. As an important aside, I'd like to note that this is the first time a white person served us in a Chinese restaurant. A bit odd or new for me, but we're in Cali, so we're cool. Everyone just want to work, so that's truly deserving of respect. This place is truly multicultural-- Asians, Latinos, white folks, work here, and so are the clientele. Global community just enjoying food and sharing each other's culture. The place looks small and humble on the outside but really nice and big on the inside. We were the only ones dining outdoor since it was windy and hot. Covid safer for us. We came Saturday around 3pm and it wasn't that busy. This review is mostly for their wedding catering services, although we have also eaten here more than a few times for dinner and were never disappointed. Being Asian American, it was imperative that we provided the traditional family style 9-10 course dinner service for our guests. We did not want to settle for a buffet or an Americanized "steak, chicken, or fish" plated dinner. Unfortunately, there were very few options aside from a Chinese banquet hall back when we first started planning our wedding, which was eventually delayed by COVID. And when we finally started planning again, we didn't want to have our wedding in a typical Chinese banquet hall after all. I found Ginger Cafe on a deep dive through the internet and downloaded their wedding catering menu. Everything looked very promising and there were a few dishes that were must haves for the bride and groom. Bo was very attentive and great at communication. We booked a tasting, which was great bc they made every single dish on their pre-set menu and even asked us if there were any additional dishes we'd like to taste! They were so flexible with customizations and substitutions, as well. So we felt so good when we decided to book them. And we were right to. OMG, we received sooo many great reviews on the food. I used to work in the area and this was a go to lunch spot for me and my team. The food was always amazing, no matter what we ordered. A few stand out items are the chicken mu shu wraps, the Mongolian beef and the fried shrimp appetizer. Everything is so well seasoned and flavorful. The cocktails and tea here are both very good to. Haven't been to Ginger cafe in a long time and this was my first time at this location since we would normally go to the Sunnyvale location. We were greeted and seated right away. We always order the tofu in mandarin sauce and decided to also share a Chinese chicken salad and the chili chicken. The chili chicken was sooo bomb! Fo the tofu, all the flavor was there and it was delicious, but we wished it was more saucy. They Chinese chicken salad was nothing to brag about. The dressing was tossed in, but even when we asked for more, the flavor was so mild and just did nothing for us. Our first time having lunch there, stopping between Los Angeles to San Francisco. To our surprise, the food is actually pretty good. Very flavorful and large portions. The pictures on the menu showed smaller portions so we were quite surprised to receive larger portions than what we were expecting. I could never find a good Chinese food spot that I truly enjoyed until I visited here for the first time. I've been to Gilroy many times and always saw it off the 101 freeway. I stumbled into this restaurant as the first Asian Fusion restaurant was a 30 minute wait. Called to see if I needed a reservation at Ginger Cafe and they stated it was still early so we would be seated if we arrived within 20 minutes. Their garlic sauce was so delicious and reminded me of the Downtown SJ restaurant, almost. We had walnut shrimp was a great! Had white rice, but that should be an automatic. It was soft and not dried out or crunchy; a plus. I highly recommend this place. Just a warning, the service was a bit slow, but it could have been the kitchen and not the wait staff, but it was worth the wait and we really enjoyed our dinner. Regardless, I've told my family that I need to definitely hit the spot again with them as they have nostalgia for our memories of our old spot. But now we can have a new spot! read more

They have vegan friendly items at this restaurant so if you have a diet that does not involve meat, this is the place for you. I personally like their orange chicken with a side of rice and sometimes I will even order a red bean smoothie or a mango passion fruit smoothie. They use half and half for their smoothies so if you're lactose intolerant like me, these drinks will sit well in your stomach, believe me. The service is always super fast and the staff is always super friendly. I believe the I've met the owner or possibly the manager a few times and he's super nice and sweet. Usually during the weekends at night, it's packed but during the week, it's quiet at times.
