Their deep dish has always been my favorite. From an early age I only ever wanted Ginos sausage patty deep dish... Nothing else can compete.

Make no mistake, this is a dive through and through. If you're expecting an appropriate date spot, this isn't it. Expect simpler items, a limited menu on some days, and service that isn't hostile, but may classify as dive-esque and surly. In other words, not from "The Customer is Always Right" camp. I'd ordered a 10-inch Gino's Special. I will fully admit I did not check my watch as to how much time elapsed between ordering and the arrival, but it took longer than I would have expected for a thin-crust. One would think I'd ordered deep dish! Anyways, the pizza did arrive, cut in neither triangles nor neat squares. It was almost as if whoever wielded the knife was a fan of contemporary art. In terms of the crust, it was thin as promised, but arguably too thin. Rather than being like a Neapolitan, it was rather eager to crumble; this was not helped by feeling overdone (note: did not request well done). Moving on to the cheese and sauce, neither of these made an impact on my palate. Not to worry, it is not all doom and gloom! If there's something I enjoyed, and can even smell as I write this, it was the toppings! The sausage, mushrooms, peppers, and onions were all in generous amounts and chunky, rather than the crumbs many pizzerias charge top dollar for. Final verdict: There were many patrons who've been coming here for years if not decades. Unless you are among them, or planning on becoming a dedicated regular, I feel as though Gino's works better as a carry-out joint. Furthermore, I might suggest getting a larger than 10" pizza, as this might help reduce the issues that come with being overdone. read more

For reference I worked as a server for years and now do food blogging and dine out nearly everyday. Never have I experienced such poor service nor would I allow it in my restaurant. We were served by a female bartender who was extremely rude when we weren't immediately ready with our drink orders. We hadn't even gotten water much less a greeting. Service was poor and was made even worse when I was berated for taking a drink of my partners beer ( I'm 27 btw ). I can understand asking me politely but wagging your finger in my face and making a scene in the restaurant is not it. I have lived across the street for 3 years and finally gave this place a chance. Cannot recommend it after my first experience was so poor. The staff definitely needs to learn the basics of hospitality and an attitude adjustment. read more

This is a charming little neighborhood bar and pizzeria. Super friendly and attentive staff. I ordered a side salad that was good, but my friend was disappointed by their salad because the chicken was processed, and iceberg lettuce is alway disappointing. We also ordered pizza. Super thin crust so had to be eaten with a fork, but it was tasty. It's a small place with bar seating and some booths. The seat cushions have been repaired with duct tape numerous times and really should be replaced, but otherwise it was a good find. I'd go there again. read more

Bartenders (possibly owners?) were pleasant and efficient. Ambiance is dive bar classy, which is a high compliment, with the bar folks seeming like regulars who love the establishment (several folks told us how awesome the food and people are, which was awesome and as hospitality people that's a wonderful sign). We were recommended to try here from the young guy at the register of Green Element and were, at this point in our day, eating for sport. We ordered the cheese bread with giardiniera, served with homemade marinara. Bread is soft on the inside and has perfect crunch on the outside. Wow what happened to this place? I feel like it became a sad shell of itself. Both from the decor side and food side. Last night we came here for dinner and when we walked in, you can hear a pin drop. The jukebox wasn't playing and the tv's were on mute. Quiet for a 7:30p on a Tuesday night. We ordered some side salads which were fine along with their thin Gino's North Special. While we were waiting, I noticed the bar looked rundown in the sense of the backlighting seemed to be missing and the bar didn't look full of bottles. It resembled a grocery store liquor aisle where the store is going out of business. It looked really strange after coming here since 2008. The pizza came and it was not great. Yes we were hungry but the lack of sauce and minimal cheese gave us a bad experience here. The sausage as usual was on point and why was there red onions on the special? Since when did that change happen? Not sure if it's new ownership but this place has gone south the last few visits we've been. It's really too bad as this place was solid at one point. read more

Just so you know a little bit about my background, I dine out 5-6 nights a week at all sorts of restaurants and manage a Dinner of the Month Club, where we dine at a different restaurant every month, for the past 20 years. I always recommended Gino's North to my friends and fellow diners, but no longer. The Bar/Table Staff on Friday night at Gino's North were extremely rude, mostly JEN. This was always a nice place to go to for a good pizza and a cocktail, but JEN ruined the evening. She took over our check from Robby (who was very nice) during a shift change and we immediately had to deal with whatever personal issues she was dealing with, the way she was interacting with us. The pizza we ordered after our Cheesy Garlic Bread appetizer was a 12 inch sausage with extra sausage. She brought it to the table and and apologized that the cook shifted the pizza while taking it out of the oven causing the toppings to shift. She offered to make a new one or discount it. We nicely chose the discount, but a little while later when I commented that we had asked for extra sausage and there literally wasn't much sausage on the pizza. She pointed at my partners piece of pizza and with attitude said, there it is. That set me off! I said he had a piece with sausage because of the way the toppings had shifted. There was actually no sausage on the majority of the pieces. She again rudely said I will just take the pizza off the bill and literally turned her back on us and walked back behind the bar. I then asked for another martini and was rudely told that they had a three martini limit. I have been to the place many times over the years and they never limited martinis before. She yelled across the room to Robby who was off shift to confirm and he agreed with her without looking at her. I disagreed and she said she would make us another martini. It was totally watered down. I went to the bar and offered apologies for any rudeness perceived in the way I was acting/communicating, but she refused to accept it and continued to disregard me and walked away. I paid the check and left her a 25% tip and again tried to apologize for any perceived rude behavior on my part and again she said she would not accept it. Hopefully you read this honest review and rethink before going to Gino's North. Or at least walk out if you see JEN behind the bar. read more

Worst dinning experience ever. Bartender / waiter was on drugs. Messed up our order multiple times. Brought wrong food to our table and brought our drinks to another table. When we reminded him we ordered something different, he picked the pizza off our table and threw it behind the bar, sliding the pizza off the tray. Yelling "SORRY YOUVE HAD SUCH A BAD EXPERIENCE" after that it wasn't worth even trying to get the right order. Tried closing out and he said "good, never come back here". Never were we rude. We were patient and understanding that it was busy. we just simply reminded him the order was wrong, did not demand a new pizza, did not send it back. And he flipped. Very solid place for pizza around Edgewater. As a bonus this restaurant is directly outside the Granville red line stop so it's very easy to get to. Inside, this place is cozy and feels like your neighborhood pizza place. The bar is very cool and always usually packed with people. There are only about five booths for seated dinner in here so note that it's not great for large parties. We got the cheesy garlic bread, which was basic but tasty. The margherita pizza had about a 2:1 cheese to bread ratio but was flavorful and came out piping hot. They also have a lot of salad, sandwich, and pasta options. For three of us we spent about 40 dollars, so a very inexpensive place to get food and drinks and a fun local spot! read more

Was staying near Gino's North on my vacation trip to Chicago and this place is one of the MUST visit spots. After several drinks and much friendly conversation with the bartender and some locals I ordered the Gino's special to go and it was amazing. Perfectly blended spices and the right amount of toppings. Inside the restaurant and bar is a vibe that online pictures don't do justice, this place is beautiful and historic. A buddy and I had stopped in there and it reminded me of a Wisconsin Supper Club. We had to wait a few minutes for a table - no big deal. By the time, we had received our wine, the table was available. The server had went over the menu with us then left us. He had stopped over couple of times to see if we were ready to order. When we were finally ready to order, the server was right there. For an appetizer, we had ordered the Cheese and Garlic Toast for an appetizer. I then ordered the Grilled Chicken Breast Ala Italiano and my friend had ordered the Gino's Style Spaghetti. We don't know exactly what happened, it took several times to receive our appetizer. It finally took about 30 minutes just for the appetizer. The toast was excellent. Couldn't get enough of it - so good. Then within 5 minutes or so, we had received the main entrees. Over all, the food was very good along with the service. The appetizer was comp'd. The server would check in with us from time to time. The decor is from a time in the past. This pizza and full bar location isn't really part of the large chain you may have heard of. In fact, I'm fairly certain it's been around since before that famous chain existed. This place is a bar that happens to serve pretty decent food, so if you're in the neighborhood, check it out! Here's my story: On a random Thursday night seven of my friends decided on a whim to visit Gino's North for a social outing, and even though the place isn't really built for that sort of sudden group gathering, the sole bartender at Gino's North Pizzeria handled everything like a true professional. I'm not sure what his real name is, but I'll call him "Champ", because staff like that is difficult to find! For some reason, the place was PACKED, and there was standing room only just after we commandeered two booth tables and ordered drinks. We then ordered two thin crust pizzas, (quite a few choices on the menu!), and watched as other non-pizza ordered flowed out of the small kitchen behind the wall all night. It all looked tasty. The comfortable space is a very down-to-earth Chicago bar, complete with plenty of televisions and interesting modern urban art for sale to check out while you and your friends unwind from a long day. This throwback place is retro-orig and fun. Great place to gather with small group of friends.... between 4-6 besties. Anymore than that might be difficult for dinner. Mostly because the establishment has a wall-lined booth arrangement that sits 4 comfortably. The rest of the small space is a neat bar with stool seating. The bar itself awesome wood barreled units and shelving, but more impressively it's graced with a dramatically lit classic statuette. (see pic) Gino's North Pizzeria is a neighborhood locale with Italian fare and full bar. The pizza selection is really broad with fantastic specialty combos. The thin crust philly cheese steak pizza was excellent and certainly a repeat order. One comment about the service is don't be in a hurry. It seemed that they make one pizza at a time. I hate rating a local neighborhood place and so low but after my experience tonight the ratings is well deserved. We brought a good friend from London over for drinks and food. The bitter and surly bartender/ server left much to be desired. She was unfriendly, condescending, borderline rude, and generally embarrassing to our out of town guest. Advice for Gino's North: There are many regulars including us who enjoy what Gino's was founded on. Unfortunately, the service received today makes me think twice about returning. There are many competing restaurants in the immediate area who understand how, and the reasons to deliver good customer service. Perhaps, next time we choose to take guests out in the neighborhood we will choose Summer or Revival. We've always had great experiences at both locations! Hopefully Gino's can sort out and correct the issues. Update 8/27/19: Over the past year, Gino's North has made strides to place the right people in the right position. The individual mentioned in my previous review is no longer at Gino's. The entire staff now a days is top notch and I consider myself to be a regular her. After seating ourselves, we waited about 10 or 15 mins but we still hadn't been acknowledged and a waiter never came by so we ended up leaving and grabbing pizza at Whole Foods. My opinion may be skewed because I'm an out-of-towner who craved deep dish. Everyone is right about seating and the atmosphere of the place. The bartenders and waiters were sort of friendly and attentive. We ordered a sausage and mushroom deep dish pizza, but what came out was a thin crust pizza with a really high crust? It really wasn't deep dish. I don't want to say anything awful about it because the flavor of the pizza was great! Just....wasn't deep dish (see photo). We want to believe that our understanding of "deep dish" isn't wrong but that the 90 year old granny cooking in the back made a mistake. If that's what their deep dish pizzas are, then I don't think we'll be visiting them again :/ read more

Three times in a row it has been undercooked even though we made a point (after the first time) of asking that it be crispy. A super tiny lounge with the feel of an Italian supper club. Once you make it past their double doors, you're invited into a warm atmosphere where you'll find nice smiles and often conversation. They say the owner still makes pizzas by hand, kneading the dough. If so, I think she's doing a pretty neat job. My Ma makes pretty fantastic "za" as well, but she's now well into her seventies and finds the activity hard to manage. So, kudos to the owner. Thin crust is pretty good. The sauce is slightly sweet and the pizza had a satisfying taste. Fresh is best, so don't allow the pizza to travel too far. read more

I'm finally qualified to give a review as I've now tried at least one of their pastas, sandwiches and pizzas. The sandwiches are pretty good and come with your choice of chips or a potato salad, but the potato salad is really small and has onions in it....bleck! (I HATE onions). On a subsequent occasion I opted for the bag of Lays' chips and the ones they gave me were like two months past the expiration date, which annoyed me (...I'm really diligent about checking expiration dates on my foods). Other than that, I've been mostly satisfied with their food. I tried their pasta margarita the other night which was good. When I first opened it I thought the entree was a bit skimpy, but the side salad and garlic bread (both of which are included) were generous portions that filled me up. I've ordered from them on Christmas Day (that was in 2018) because they were about the only place in the area open that day. But as I recall, they were closed on Christmas Day 2019 for some reason, and then again on Christmas 2020, though that was pandemic-related. After a period where they were open only for takeout, they finally just reopened their bar with normal hours, last spring I believe it was. Located two blocks south of Loyola, this place is a little unusual for Edgewater in that the clientele is predominantly middle-aged in an otherwise very youthful neighborhood. It's a cozy place, but smallish and becomes crowded very easily. I've only ordered pickups to-go, I've never dined in due to my mild claustrophobia and especially now with the pandemic. But I live right across the street so I walk by them almost daily. They usually have drink specials advertised. Moderately priced. Parking is extremely scarce in the area, but the restaurant is located less than 60 feet walking/stumbling distance to the Red Line Granville station. Use public transportation for goodness sake. *Note: online ordering is not available through their main website so you have to use Grubhub, etc., If you're getting takeout, online ordering is highly recommended as the wait for food averages 20 minutes, and during the evening seats are virtually nonexistent. read more

Gino's North is the kind of place that I would have never visited without my friend who was born and raised in Chicago recommending it. The exterior is nothing special, a long narrow building next to Campus Police, under the red line tracks. Inside, however, is one of the most beautiful pizza parlours in the city. The tables are all circular booths, comfy and intimate. The bar is a historic gem, with a sculpture of a woman in a fountain as its centerpiece. The woodwork and sculpt of the place is top notch. Gino's North is the kind of place where you want to linger at the bar or booth and take in the ambience. It ranks amongst the classiest old school pizza joints, ever. And that's where Gino's North really excels: in the old school pizza. It is no longer common knowledge that there are 2 varieties of Chicago-style pizza, but it's true. There is deep dish, which Gino's North offers and I haven't tried: then there is Chicago-style thin crust, which is where Gino's North shines. The crust is cornmeal dusted cracker style, super crispy, the crispiest for this style i have yet experienced. The perfect foil for juicy, cheesy toppings. Gino's North uses real pepperoni, the kind that curls in the pizza oven. That and the Gino's Special (sausage, onion, chile, mushroom) should not be missed. Gino's North operates with a lot of care, from the food to the service. Afterwards we went to Lickety Split for a concrete, dessert Jimmy Hoffa-style. read more
