We recommended and visited Gino's with some new friends because we had been so impressed with the food, service, etc. in the past. This time was a bit different. When we entered the restaurant the hostess stand was super friendly as usual. Unfortunately, our table was miserably small and in very close proximity to a large table and a wall which essentially made us "sandwiched in". The noise in the room was horribly loud and hard to have a conversation with our guests. The server was fine however, was not as friendly as we are used to and that was a bit of a disappointment. However, the man refilling our water was fabulous, upbeat and very courteous. The food was amazing and is always consistent! When we are spending $150 on a check for 2, I want the entire fabulous dining experience which I had always felt like I got in the past. Anyway, to reiterate, I love the location, the vibe, the delicious food. Just was not a good choice for conversation and personal space. Once a month, I meet with a group of sweet ladies for lunch and we like to try a different restaurant each time. For April, we chose Gino's. The waiter who served us wasn't particularly personable, but we gave him the benefit of the doubt--maybe he was just having a rough day. He took our drink orders and asked if we would like some "Laurence bread." We had not heard of it, and it wasn't clear whether it was complimentary or not. He recommended we get three orders (two pieces per order) to cover our group of six. At that point, we realized it wasn't complimentary--but that was okay. Most of us ordered from the daily lunch specials. I chose the veal, which came with a salad. The salad was good. One friend, however, said her salad had entirely too much dressing on it, and was not enjoyable. When my entrée arrived, I was disappointed to find a lone, dry fried veal cutlet with no sauce and a side of spaghetti with just a dab of sauce for color. The lunch was $18.95. I requested extra sauce for the veal and my bread roll--he brought some--cost $1.50. Oddly, Parmesan cheese wasn't offered, which is standard at most Italian places. One friend asked the man refilling our drinks, but he never returned. She eventually asked the waiter, who did bring some. Honestly, I'm surprised we didn't find a charge on our bill for that too. As we boxed up our leftovers (though I'm not even sure why), one friend who had the chicken shish kebab--and had only eaten about half--was asked why she wasn't taking hers home. She replied, "It came to the table dry--I can't imagine it reheated." When the checks arrived, one friend was mistakenly charged for a salad that should have been included with her meal, but she caught it, and they corrected it. Another friend, who hadn't ordered from the lunch menu, was charged $25 for her meal plus an additional fee for her salad, which wasn't included. And each of us was charged $3.25 for a single roll. I understand that prices are up and dining out is a luxury, but this felt a bit steep for a meal that was, at best, mediocre. Side note: Two ladies ordered meals to take home for their husbands, and I gave my leftovers to mine. All three were unimpressed. read more

Expensive for what it is, but it's good Italian food in the Baton Rouge area. I got the Italian Sausage meal (sauce and sausage not pictured) with a Caprese Salad to go, and it was $40, which I thought was very expensive for the portion size. The noddles, sausage and sauce were amazing. It comes with two sausage links and tons of sauce. Even though I had it to-go, I feel like I still got the delicious quality of food. I wish there was more for the price.. I feel like it was only a cup of noodles, but oh well. The Caprese Salad was average but only two pieces. I did like the thickness of the cheese though. I ordered and within 25 minutes it was ready to go. You have to walk to the bar to pick up to-go orders, and this gives you a chance to see the restaurant. I liked this because most restaurants have you pick up to-go orders at the front, so you aren't able to see the resturant. It's an old Italian vibe with fireplaces and a dark lighting inside. Very authentic Italian, just wish portion sizes were bigger because I was still hungry after. read more

Im reviewing this again because i cannot say enough good things about their food or service. Authentic italian food with the best service. Its almost impossible to enjoy Italian food elsewhere when the bar is set so high. We had the Crawfish appetizer which was heavenly. Definatley make a special trip during crawfish season for this. Steaks were divine, lamb chops were perfectly cooked. Even a simple menu item like chicken parmigiana is cooked to perfection. Second time here. First was approx 20 yrs ago for lunch. This tine for dinner. Calamari, seafood lasagna, almond creme tiramisu and the Moscato was absolutely amazing. This place is a well-kept secret in Baton Rouge. I'm very picky about Italian food, and I absolutely love Gino's. Three things you do need to know: 1) best to call for a reservation (especially for a weekend or a larger group), 2) the prices are on the higher side, and 3) be sure to order the house specialty bread (it's not included, but worth the price). Note that for groups of 6+ a 20% gratuity will be added to your bill. This is a great place for date night! I've been here a couple of times, and the wait staff are always very friendly. They are also super knowledgeable about their menu, including their rather extensive wine menu. The cannelloni (both seafood and meat options) are delicious and probably the best pasta dish on the menu. I've tried to order the tortellini carbona a few times, but somehow they are always out (womp womp - bad luck, perhaps). If you get dessert - the tartufo cake is absolutely delicious. Went back on a Thursday. There was a live "jazz" band. The genre wasn't quite jazz but they were great! Had a really good time listening to them and watching others dance. As someone who heavily enjoys a nice, high-quality experience, I tend to have high expectations that fall short. But I can honestly say my expectations were exceeded at Gino's. I visited Gino's last August & initially when we walked in we did not know it was reservation only (honest mistake). The hosts/hostess were not the kindest & for a second we were ready to turn around and leave. They told us we need a reservation because it's reservation only so we asked when is there availability. They said they had room and sat us...the building was nearly empty. I just felt their tone was unnecessary & it was a turn off as a first time visit. What really turned this review around was Terry, our server. Terry has the be one of the best server I've ever had, hands down. He was so friendly & had amazing energy. He helped us navigate the menu, shared his recommendations, and made sure we enjoyed Gino's to the fullest extent! I recommend everyone to give this Italian restaurant a try! The food is delicious. It's the perfect location for a formal or casual dinner spot. The atmosphere is low-lit & intimate. It is my go to spot when I want to treat myself. Oh--and when you make reservations, ask for Terry! I went back to Gino's after years away and was disappointed. They could not find my reservation, which was twice confirmed by phone. Service was prompt and responsive. My grilled fish was overcooked and mushy--probably from being frozen--and sat in a pool of oil. The appetizer salad was small and mostly white lettuce parts. This place is tucked away but easy to get too. This was my first time eating here and it was ok, I've had better Italian at other places, but for Baton Rouge I would say it's a good place to go. Went with a group of 4 couples and we had a great time. The wine menu is great! I ordered the cannelloni and it was definitely delicious but not like knock your socks off omg I need it again delicious. I love eating here. I do t make it often but always go on my birthday. Our waiter was wonderful. I had the redfish special it was very good and flavored well. My husband had the veal picatia . He did not care for the capers so he just took them off. It was tender and delicious. We had the mushroom ravioli for the appetizer they were unique to me but tasted great. Their bread is also amazing. My husband and I had the side salad Gino's had thousand island which is my husbands favorite but most restaurants don't have it. He said that was the best salad he had had for a long time and the dressing was perfect made. We came here on a Friday night, so it was pretty busy and we had to wait for a bit before we got seated. The food was delicious and there's tons of options to satisfy all of your food cravings! I got the veal parmesan, which is my go-to at Italian restaurants, and this was one of the best veal parmesans I've had. So I'll admit to skepticism when a colleague said he was taking us to great Italian when I was in Baton Rouge on business. I mean the two are not synonymous. However, this place delivered. I eat mostly vegan and they made me a pasta with olive oil, garlic, basil and mushrooms and broccoli that was scrumptious. Not too much salt, a little excessive on the oil but admittedly it did provide great flavor. The amount was more than fair for the price. The wine was a Russian River Valley Pinot noir and so perfect with the meal. Rich but not heavy and with great flavors that enhances the food rather than competes with it. Colleagues had the grilled fish of the night and and the cannelloni and let's just say that the sounds being made were probably not business friendly lol. The only issue was the service. It was very slow but the gentleman was very nice - took quite a while to get the order taken. The food came pretty quickly just the wait to order was a bit excessive to me.
