So I'll admit to skepticism when a colleague said he was taking us to great Italian when I was in Baton Rouge on business. I mean the two are not synonymous. However, this place delivered. I eat mostly vegan and they made me a pasta with olive oil, garlic, basil and mushrooms and broccoli that was scrumptious. Not too much salt, a little excessive on the oil but admittedly it did provide great flavor. The amount was more than fair for the price. The wine was a Russian River Valley Pinot noir and so perfect with the meal. Rich but not heavy and with great flavors that enhances the food rather than competes with it. Colleagues had the grilled fish of the night and and the cannelloni and let's just say that the sounds being made were probably not business friendly lol. The only issue was the service. It was very slow but the gentleman was very nice - took quite a while to get the order taken. The food came pretty quickly just the wait to order was a bit excessive to me. Over the past few years Gino's has become one of my favorite restaurants in town, but tonight we had an experience that disappointed me. It's my wife's absolute favorite, so I decided to take her out for a date night. I decided to order the Filet alla Laurence, which was listed at "market price." I figured it would be somewhere between $30-40, which I was fine with. It was cooked well, but was underseasoned and didn't have much flavor. Everything else - the Laurence bread, Mama's salad w/ crabmeat, arancine - were all great. Our server was overwhelmed and was trying to bartend and wait tables all at once, and was gone for long periods at a time. Anyway, it was pretty lackluster and when the bill came, I was shocked to see that the filet was priced at $58.95 - totally not worth it. IDK, it just rubbed me the wrong way. I'm sure we'll be back, but I certainly won't trust their "market prices" from now on. read more

I've heard great things about this place so I was expecting great things. Now you have to remember this restaurant has been open since the 1960's and well to be honest it shows . They truly need to update this establishment. The food I ordered the lasagna lunch special and it came with a Italian salad. My daughter ordered the same thing and my mother ordered off the dinner menu . My mom has to order a side salad since even with the higher prices at night her entree didn't come with a salad . They bring out some bread but it's nothing special to be truthful. Maybe I'm just spoiled to Carrabba's bread and dip or Ruffino's I don't know but I prefer the bread sticks at Olive Garden more. They brought out our Italian salads which were pretty good I did like my moms salad better. Once my lasagna came out my daughter noticed they make theirs with sweet peas ‍. Which we both ate it but I've definitely had better lasagna . Don't get me wrong it's okay it's just not great. All in all there are way too many Italian places in Baton Rouge to pay the price for Gino's. Now if they would update the restaurant I may give it a second try. The portions are just to small for the price in my opinion. The service was pretty good I did have to have the waiter change my bill because he charged me for a soft drink when a drank water though . I can see back in the day this was probably a very nice date night restaurant sadly it needs updating badly. For example the restroom door is so tiny I'm sure many people have to turn sideways just to get in. Now my mom absolutely loves this place so you may as well maybe I'm just a little spoiled to the more fancier restaurants instead of classics idk honestly ! read more

Gino's is always exceptional. They were fully booked on a Tuesday evening; however, we were able to grab a seat at the bar. We were greeted quickly by the bar tenders, asked for our drinks. We had a cosmo, dirty martini and a glass of Pinot noir (J. Lohr). All the drinks were spectacular! We had the appetizer of calamari - was hoping they had the seafood arancini but they only had their beef version available - highly recommend the seafood when in season! We then had the chicken parm, lasagne, grilled soft shell crabs and the Laurence salad (substituted the olive mix dressing for ranch; the palm of hearts are why we went with this salad!). They were packed by the time 6:30 rolled around, definitely recommend making reservations even in the weekday! read more

Came here on a Friday night, super packed however we made reservations for a birthday dinner and was able to be seated fairly quick! I must say the ambiance makes you feel like you're in an authentic Italian home/restaurant setting. The best part??? Live piano music and we were able to request a few songs! Our server was amazing and very informative. The food was on point however I must say the portions are a bit small for the price. Nonetheless, everything was rich in flavor & delicacy. So sad..I had heard a lot about Gino's but was underwhelmed at minimum. My chicken was so dry I could not eat it. A trained waiter would notice and question why..offer something else..but none of that happened. Chicken isn't that complicated! Coffee was cold. I could go on. So sad. read more

A long standing favorite for old school atmosphere, wonderful service from gentleman that have been there for 20/30 years and the BEST sauce ever !!! I don't stray from my usuals to much . This time it was the Laurence bread beef arancini and Lasagna ! So stinkin good I almost picked up the plate and just slurped up the sauce !!!! Perfect sized portions !! Delicious yummy selection of red wines and ended with the almond cream tiramisu; you better get it !! Was so happy to enjoy this meal on my one day trip home to Baton Rouge !! While I have been to Gino's a number of times over the years I just realized recently that I hadn't ever written a review! So tonight's the night! Having said that - as it turns out - there is a little bit of irony in that I chose to do a review on a night when, honestly, the experience was not quite up to par with what I have experienced here before. So, I want to be fair and say that I have had several wonderful meals here in the past - and I expect I will in the future. At the same time - the whole point of this exercise is to give a fair, true description of whatever you experienced. Otherwise we're just writing fiction here! So - on to the task at hand. I tried three things tonight. Firstly, I ordered one of their signature dishes - the Lasagna - which I have tried in the past. It was good. My previous experience was better. All the right ingredients were there - but it just felt a little flat and lacked any distinctive seasoning that made me just want to stop and savor that last bite. It's been there before. But not tonight. And the "structure" was lacking a bit. Again it was good, but not great and not what I've had before. The Broccoli al Gino is basically steamed with cheese melted on top and placed under a broiler. Sadly, it too was lacking. It was just bland - no hint of any sort of seasoning, no lemon, no herbs, and the cheese itself seems to me to need some sort of punch to it. It would not have been hard to turn that dish around. As a side I had their signature "Lawrence Bread" which was its usual standard of excellence. Hot, perfectly cooked bread rolls, crunchy crust, soft interior, with a Parmesan coat and a hint of butter. It's some of the best bread in town. Atmosphere? Gino's has plenty of that going on along wth a "neighborhood" restaurant feel. Lighting is to my personal preference, live piano music in the bar, friendly bartenders (Shout out to Sherie who did a wonderful job) - and a good track record. So, while I'm not giving the rating I might have on a different night - I'm planning on being back. It's a nice spot and everyone should experience a good night at Gino's. read more

The food is only good if you hate seasoning. Tremendously bland. Best thing on the menu is the Laurence bread, but that's a small loaf of bread, nothing to write home about. Ambience is only good if you have nostalgia for the early 70s. Restaurant seems like it hasn't been updated since then. Lights are kept dim so it's harder to see the table scraps they scrape on the floor. Giving it 2 stars instead of 1 because the wait staff was nice. Easily one of the most overrated restaurants in BR, reeks of an overrated yet well established restaurant that will shut down in a few years because they "couldn't find workers". read more

I don't understand the 4 star reviews. We ordered the Italian sausage platter and the chicken parmigiana. The chicken and the sausage were good, but $25 per dish seams a little high. For that price, you would think that the pasta would be homemade instead of from a box, or they would have included a small salad. We won't be in a hurry to return. read more

Best Italian food in the capital area. The menu hasn't changed in years, because it doesn't need to. Some of my favorites are the arancini and the veal Parma. I've been to a lot of restaurants around Baton Rouge and honestly this is the best service and ambiance that I've experienced in a while. Server was amazing very professional and quick! My boyfriend and I are early 20s we knew it would be an older crowd, but we were still treated with the same respect... which honestly never happens! We're usually given lackluster service but still tip. I ordered the champagne shrimp and it was one of the best things I've ever eaten. Everything was perfect except for the salad. Lots of spines and wilted lettuce. Other than that it was amazing! I think my waiters name was Evan or Ethan lol! We're definitely going to be coming back soon. read more

I wish I could give this place 10 stars that's how good it is! We stopped in for lunch got the spaghetti and meat sauce off the lunch special came with an Italian salad and off the regular menu I got the cannelloni with Italian sauce and a mama's salad we finished off the meal by sharing a slice of chocolate chip cheesecake. The service was great and was the best Italian food I've ever had the inside was really cute and had a romantic vibe to it.. Great place to come for a date an anniversary or even just a lunch. I love Gino's it's a Baton Rouge Classic it's been around since 1960 something so you know it's good. There is a beautiful piano in the lounge area and plenty of tables to dine. I think there are 4 separate dining areas and each room is beautiful in its on way. This place is still ran by the same family if you haven't tried it your missing out. Today we were seated in the little step down dining room that looks like your in old Italy. The waiters all are dressed nicely in black pants and vests with white button up collars and the service is stellar. The two people I met there for lunch both got the Lunch lasagna it came with an Italian salad, I had the veal parmesan with spaghetti. The veal was so delicious and so tender, the red sauce wasn't bitter like some red sauces are it was delicious and then it the veal was all topped with mozzarella cheese it and baked it . Yum Yum! Then a bowl of spaghetti and sauce came on the side. No salad came with my veal parmesan but I ordered a small mammas salad on the side. The mammas salad was good but I think I liked the Italian salad better so next time I'm gonna get the Italian. read more

Gino's has been a favorite for over 40 years. I can always count on fantastic consistent flavor! The only problem I can report is that when receiving our entrees, they were in tiny maybe 7inch plates! Even if they had to make entrees smaller due to cost, the presentation is a MUST! I genuinely can't believe it took us three years to give Gino's a try. Went on a Tuesday night, and while I would say this place is severely underrated given how little we'd heard about it, it was quite busy and our server described it as a slow night. Great old school service that reminded us of Italian joints in NYC. The laurence bread, in particular, was phenomenal. We ordered the lasagna and a veal piccata, and while the food wasn't particularly modern or unusual, it was executed perfectly. Great as a special occasion spot, or a place to go for comfort food. I was completely dissatisfied with my experience at this restaurant! I do not recommend this place at all, and if you're reading this I would recommend eating some place else. I ordered Spaghetti to go and I feel as if I was taken advantaged of. I was told from who I ordered from at the bar that the spaghetti would cost around $12.95, but when I received my receipt my total was $15.74. When I returned to eat my spaghetti, it looked as if they had used someone else's food that had been sent back and distributed half of the normal portion it into my to-go box and then the other half into my friends to-go boxes because we all ordered the same thing and received small portions. The bread was stale and my spaghetti was also smothered in sauce without an equal balance and was extremely bland with no flavor. With that being said, I would not recommend this place for anyone in the future. read more

Was there at 5:20 and was told if we didn't have a reservation we could sit at the bar but had to be OUT by 6:30. The place was empty except for 1 table. you can't tell me that all those tables were reserved for 5:30. In all the times we have been there as long as we were there before 5:30 we were seated without a problem by a very friendly hostess. I love this place so much. I stop in every time I'm in town. It reminds me of some of my favorite restaurants in "The Hill" in St. Louis. Service is top notch. The staff know the menu so well and are eager to help make decisions. I was even able to create a dish off the menu. (Angel Hair with OGB and Gulf shrimp.) my waiter was Austin. Based on our experience, I can't figure out why this place is so highly reviewed. We went there on a Monday night. The place was very busy. We got a table and waited 20 min for someone to take our drink order. Then it took 15 min to get our bottle of wine. We were afraid to let the waiter go without ordering (thinking it might be another 20 min before we saw him again) so we placed our order for the traditional Arancine as the appetizer and our dinners. The dinners are all ala carte so we each added a salad. Now this place is not cheap, so we found it odd that all the dinners were served without sides or a salad. Also odd was that 4 of the 6 appetizers were small pasta dishes. Which is why we asked for the dinner sized arancine as our appetizer. We didn't want to burn out on pasta. The other thing we noticed was a disclaimer on the bottom of the menu that said there was a surcharge for to go orders. It was less than $1, but still odd. I have to admit the food was good. We waited about 30 min after our appetizer for the entree, but it was good.The salad was fresh and not overly dressed. The Lasagna Alla Gino was full of cheese and meat and the sauce was seasoned just right. The arancine was good. It had alot more meat than I've seen at other restaurants and it was not overly sauced, but there is no way I could have made a meal out of what we were served as our 1st course. The wine by the bottle list was good and had some nice selections in the $40 -$50 range. Overall, our experience was not what we expected. The place was loud,we had to flag down someone every time we needed water filled. No one refilled our wine glasses. The prices were high and the portions small. Although we liked the food, the atmosphere and service is not on-par with what we expect for the price we paid. read more
