I started off with their roasted beet and goat cheese appetizer. It was warm beets, drizzled in balsamic topped with shaved orange and chunks of goat cheese and sat on a bed of arugula. This appetizer was more like a salad, and since my meal also came with a salad, I would have ordered something different had it been described that way. The waitress then brought out fresh baked bread with an olive oil dip. The bread melted in your mouth and the dip had ground olives in it, elevating the oil's flavor. For my main I ordered the shrimp and bay scallop risotto. It was a white wine risotto that definitely had some parmesean in there. Beyond the scallops and shrimp, there were peas as well as some basil oil drizzled on top. The scallops were tender, and the dish had good flavor. In my opinion, it was a run of the mill risotto with shrimp and scallops. A safe choice prepared well. I went on a Wednesday around 4:30pm and the entire time I was the only one dining in the restaurant. On the flip side, I have been here on a Saturday around the same time, and you can't get a table without a 40min wait. If you like crowds, this place is bustling on the weekends. If you are looking for a quieter night, try it on a weekday. Right now rated a 7.3 on my Beli. Not a bad spot, but not one of my top recommendations. read more

Best pizza I've had in the Lehigh Valley. The personal coal oven pies are delicious and big enough to share with friends, or bring home a slice or two for dinner. We had the vegan no cheese pizza which is hard to find in the Allentown area. It was so fresh and flavorful. We also had the cheese pie with pancetta and the cheese pie with sausage. They were great. Nice crust, perfect NY style thickness. I had the pressed hot sausage and broccoli rabe sandwich - the rabe tender rippini and sausage were toasted and cooked perfectly. The only thing it could use is a slice of melted provolone cheese which I'm sure I could have ordered. Also, pls no added salt. Excellent Peroni beer served in a Peroni brew slender glass - a nice touch. Nothing is worse than a high end beer in a generic glass. Was looking for a place to eat in the area and had a hankering for some Italian so stopped in. Was seated quickly and reviewed the menu. Ordered an old fashioned and it was good. Had the meatball appetizer and it was really good and very filling. Dense meatballs in a solid red sauce Nice inside, like a typical Italian restaurant. Service was good, friendly and helpful. Wife ordered the margarita pizza while I couldn't decide between the eggplant parmigiana and seafood risotto. Waitress recommended the risotto so I went with that. Pizza was really good. Wife loved it. Risotto was really heavy and cheesy, little too much for me. Shrimp and scallops were cooked well, as was the rice but it was just too heavy and oily. Ate about a third and couldn't eat anymore Would definitely go back for pizza and try the eggplant next time! read more

It has been a long while since we visited (when they first opened), and thought it would be better after so much time passed. But, while the service was good, the food was marginal at best. We had to return our calamari appetizer because it was tasteless but the mozzarella sticks were good. Our main courses, unfortunately, were nothing spectacular. I had a tremendous dining experience here. The veal saltimbocca was well executed and delicious! The shrimp risotto was also ordered, and came out prepared properly and was also delicious. The traditional spaghetti and meatballs was ordered to determine a "base line" and that too was well done. The meatballs were made well, and full of flavor. We enjoyed all three offerings very much. I would like to try the pizza at my next visit. The service was very friendly and accommodating. The overall environment was a little loud for my taste, and that's what keeps this place in business -- a full restaurant! I can't wait to go back and endulge in some more great Italian food. These days the "glorified pizza shop" is around every corner, hiding freezer burned shrimp in a heavy Alfredo sauce. That is not the case here whatsoever. This place is not worth your time. Im so disappointed after listening to the website which states, no reservations I called ahead for a table in 45 minutes. They said that they were full with reservations. So this restaurant took reservations on a Saturday night (which clearly states they don't). Really sad to write this one. This place is so close we can walk but we can't recommend it anymore. Our first couple visits were great. Our last 3-4 were all disappointing. So this review isn't off of one visit but 6-7 visits overall. Let me say the staff is very helpful and very nice, we are greeted and seated with polite service, but that can't make up for the short fall on the food we've been served the last few visits. Like the outdoor seating too. Music was a touch too loud for talking comfortably, but within an acceptable range. Most recently, I thought for lunch, that I would try something different than the main Italian dishes they serve: My "Sicillian burger" gave me mouthfuls of saltiness. I do salt my food at home usually if needed, so I am not sensitive to a good salting, but salt was all I could taste on most bites. (I did not add any). Another visit before that, my wife and I ordered two distinct pasta dishes with supposedly difference sauces on them. As a married couple we always sample each others' food (it's the law). But both our pasta dishes had the identical sauce on them though the menu said they should have been reasonably different. Another time the Prosciutto sandwich she ordered had Panchetta on it. Not the same. If they needed to substitute in either of these cases for supply issues, they should have offered that information and not present it as if nothing was changed. Something isn't right in the kitchen there. Lastly, when I ordered a nice spicy pasta dish that I have enjoyed before, it came out to me completely bland. All the zing, that i loved about the dish was gone. Major multiple inconsistencies have led me to write this review. Appetizers are really nice and a good options, but desserts are extremely small for the price (avoid them). A nice after dinner drink menu. The food is generally not bad, except for my burger, but it isn't up to keeping us going back either. I would not recommend to anyone I know anymore with these amount of issues each time we've visited, there are too many other places to try rather than keep going back for a disappointing experience. read more

We are always on the lookout for places that have gluten free options due to my wife's celiac disease. We found Gio after it popped up on our Upside cashback app. Taking a look at the menu, we got really excited because they offered several gluten free options as well as a great selection for me and our child. We placed an order for pickup and went to get it. Unfortunately reality did not match our expectations. First of all, I didn't think it was possible to make bad mozzarella sticks. Today I was proved wrong. What I got was a hard piece of string cheese wrapped in bland breading accompanied by a watery cup of red liquid that faintly reminded me of marina sauce. Followed by a veal parm dinner, that while well portioned, was overcooked, dry and bland (seems to be a trend). Sitting on top of penne that was chewy and swimming in red water (not sauce) that was, you guessed it, bland. My wife got a chicken parm dinner with gluten free pasta and a piece of grilled chicken. The pasta itself was ok, but the sauce was the same as mine. The piece of chicken looked like half of a leftover chicken breast they butterflied to make paper thin. I can't review the kid's food, because how reliable is a 3 year old? Maybe they do better in the restaurant, sitting at a table. But for $66 I expect to at least get close to the same experience, especially when I'm picking it up and but relying on a third party delivery service. Yikes. We got takeout for 6pm and I was excited to get pizza all day because I've been craving some for a long time. I was finally in town dogsitting for a friend, and I remembered how much I enjoyed this place last time I was there, so ordering pizza from here was a no-brainer. Yeah. Okay. Long story short, I park right in front of the restaurant and called to make sure the food was ready because I had the dog in the car and was going to have to let him stay in for a while. He's a big boy and very sweet but has serious separation anxiety so anyway I call and the lady on the phone was like "uhhhh okay. what's your name?" and i said the name it was under and she was like "what?" and i was like THIS IS MY NAME PLEASE CONFIRM and by this point the dog was already whining cause he was sensing I was about to leave. Anyway! She tells me the food is ready so I thank her and BOLT out of my car (again, parked right in front) and the dog starts freaking out and sprints right behind me and attempts to get out of the car. Despite me attempting to shove him back in, he didn't budge and was still crying so I was like omg okay so I strapped his collar on him and took him out. Immediately, doggie was very excited because he loves being outside (don't all dogs?) and people passing by were already like "omg dog so cute!" which happens often. Anyway, my anxiety was already high because doggie was SO excited but I know some people have dog allergies so I was trying not to come all the way into the restaurant. So I stop in about halfway in (there's a small hallway inside one door that leads to the actual main door) and smile at the lady and say "I am so sorry the dog followed me out" and the woman literally UGH! Sorry, this still gets me mad. So the woman hands me the pizza with the most plastic awkward smile and doesn't acknowledge me at all, just legit stares right past me to the guy walking into the restaurant that was already cooing at the dog and she says "hi may I help you?" to the man while still holding the pizza I was taking in my hands. Zero acknowledgement or nada and she gave the dog the DIRTIEST LOOK. What the hell? Like, sorry i half brought a dog into your restaurant but don't you guys have a patio dogs chill at all the time? I've seen it. Was she acting like that cause doggie is a pit bull? Still rude. I regret the pizza and the dog's wasted car trip and MY wasted car trip and the money that was also wasted on a pizza I was so excited for but ended up being such a crud experience overall. This is my first review, but not my first visit. We attend the Macungie car show here every year, and never miss the chance to visit Gio. The food is absolutely amazing. My favorite dish is the Terra and Mare, chicken. They have tasty martinis, and for the first time we tried a 9 inch Margarita pizza.... WOWZA!!! My companions also had delicious dinners, including a pasta with sausage dish and a veal dish. Even the pasta with marinara sauce on the side was to die for. We did not order dessert this time, because we were so full - but the last visits always included tasty dessert that never disappointed. The coffee and cappuccinos are delicious as well. Overall good choice. Food is consistently good, and portion sizes are generally big enough for two meals. Service can be variable at times; have had good and some not great experiences. I'm very fussy about my food and growing up with an Italian mother from Brooklyn I'm even fussier when it comes to Italian food. I highly recommend the Rigatoni Bolognese it's my all time favorite. I had the Baked Cavatelli the other night and it didn't disappoint, I felt like it was made specifically for me to my liking. It's not often you get a meal that makes you feel that way! Never ever ever had I had a bad meal at Gio's! I have lived in Macungie for almost 12 years. This is my very favorite! I have tried most dishes on the menu, and every single one of them are delicious! Service is wonderful the greetings were wonderful. Very attentive waiters and waitresses! I think my favorite dish is chicken marsala! Yum Yum Yum! But everything that I get or my guest order , we definitely want to come back in another week or two to have another delicious meal. When relatives from out of town come to visit, this is where we go! If you feel you've had a bad meal at Gio's, go back and order some thing else on the menu, you will not be sorry. I am telling you! Had the best dinner in the Valley! Haven't eaten here in a bit always order pizza to go home the best! Tonight we went in and it was amazing!! I was tossed between the chicken parm, and bolognese and waiter said you get a pasta for side so you can get both!! So that's what I did!! Portion was huge took most home! Three long-time friends and I visited this week, upon my recommendation based on past food and service. We ate on the patio -- fully vaccinated, but wanting to enjoy the beautiful evening. The food was excellent, as always, and the wait staff was attentive. It took some time to get our checks, but we were all chatting and the wait was not too long. The reason for four stars was that, three times during our two-hour stay, we smelled acrid, horrible cigar smoke. Our three tables on our end of the patio commented on it, and I addressed one of the wait staff, asking him to please ask whomever was smoking the cigar to stop. He immediately said, "of course," and went inside. NONE of the patrons on the patio were smoking -- we checked. Come to find out, apparently it was the staff -- smoking around the corner from our tables. We were grateful that by the third "episode," we were ready to leave. Cigarette smoke is bad enough, but that cigar smoke was putrid. I will have to give a second thought to going back to the patio. So kudos to the food and service. Management needs to address the smoking habits of employees. *** I am not against smoking cigars. My husband will have one occasionally -- but to smoke in the area of folks eating isn't acceptable. read more

I have to say that this is, hands down, the BEST brick oven pizza in the Lehigh Valley.. there... I said it... take that! Well, it's true. I have the pleasure of working near this fabulous Italian restaurant, however I only get to eat here once in a great while because it is a restaurant and I don't always have an hour for lunch. That being said, every time I've eaten here, it's been fantastic... from their plain pizza to the Giovanna to their Caesar salad it's yummy! The service is good, if not a little on the slow side... but they want you to sit and relax and the view of the pizza over over the bar is perfect for that!
