4.5 Here's the thing: if you don't know by now that when you patronize a restaurant out of Citizen Kitchens you're going to get a banger 9 times out of 10, I have to question how long you've been in Nashville and if delicious food is something you take seriously. As has been evidenced many times before, CK is that girl and Gio's Chicago Pizza fits in very nicely. The pizza landscape in Nashville continues to evolve. This is a good thing. After a long and frustrating day, I needed to soothe with food.* Being that it was late fall, I wanted something warm but I didn't want to go entirely Thanksgiving-y in my diet. Savory, yes. Comforting, yes. Boring, no. Enter Gio's. The former Chicagoan in me always keeps an eye out for Windy City fare in the Music City. Looking over the menu, I felt like this was authentic enough to try. I called, made my order and drove out west to pick up my goodies. I was early, so the kind folks let me in. As I walked into the (literal and figurative) kitchen, I found out that my authentic assumptions were correct. This dynamic duo was from Downers Grove. I immediately felt much better about what I was about to eat. You can choose from deep dish or tavern style at Gio's. I went for the latter, as I don't think the former ever travels well (plus, it can be a LOT). If you're in the mood to take down an entire pizza, go tavern style. We chatted some more before my pizza was ready. I settled up, wished them well and headed home. I might have sped because the aroma filled my car with incredible smells. My Tavern Cicero** was BIG. That was the second thing I thought after opening the lid (the first thing was how good it smelled). Each square was generously cut but not so big as to be intimidating (or to forgo to the tiny semi-circles on the edges) with semi-sweet sauce and a thin but sturdy crust that accompanies the topping, rather than overwhelming them. The Cicero is all things Illinois sausage and pepperoni and it was phenomenal. I believed that the ingredients came from the Midwest. I haven't had a Chicago pizza like that in Nashville. If you have a particular itch to scratch, Gio's has you covered. *Yeah, I know. **I think it was a special at the time but became popular enough to make it a staple. read more

As previously mentioned, Gio's Chicago Pizza is located in Citizen Kitchens and is for takeout only. The front door was hard to find as there were several large food trucks parked out front, but it is the red double door entrance. Having recently been to Chicago, and I would say their deep dish is good for Nashville standards, but not as great as what you can get Chicago. We got a supreme deep diThe crust could be more buttery and flakey, and the vegetables could be fresher. The sauce had a great flavor and the cheese was very good quality lending to a nice cheese pull. Overall, it was cooked very well too. Their staff was friendly, even though we came a few minutes earlier than our pizza was ready. It's worth a try, especially if you're craving deep dish in Nashville. Let me set the stage here, so you're not surprised when you order Gio"s. It is not a restaurant. It is a place that has set up in the community kitchen on Alabama. You enter in the 47th street side and walk into the kitchen. In short, no place to eat. Take out only. The good is awesome, however. Think crusty droopy dish with a great mozzarella cheese. Layers of toppings and a nice homemade sauce on top. When i brought this into Bold Patriot to eat, my friend said "how much do I owe you?" His jaw does when I mentioned what it cost, he had a shocked look until he held the box and felt the weight of the pie. I plan on visiting them Wednesdsy for their pop up at Harding House. Alright so i grew up in southside chicago for 21 years... Ive also lived in 13 states and traveled the country..... I grew up thinking we all had the same pizza... i was way off. If youre in nashville and looking for a chicago style pizza outside of chicago, this is the closest i found. Little helpful feedback- theres things they can do to get closer. I can tell the brand of cheese is different and the sauce could be tweaked.. as an example, a little toasted fennel in the sauce would make it more authentic... I know theres some companies that ship in water from chicago for the right dough consistency (though i will say i dont think thats necessary... that a lot and cuts down in profit margins greatly)... But as someone who learned to make my hometown pizzas homemade since i couldnt find anything close... there are some tweaks to perfect the recipe you can do without going to such extremes... This is the closest youll find outside of chicago. My only helpful feedback is to tweak the sauce recipe a little... and the cheese. Based off my homemade pizzas i know its doable... just keep tweaking it and we will get there. Overrall, very solid pizza but i wanna see them dial it in. Great ppl too read more

The sauce has great flavor and the Italian sausage had that rich fennel flavor. The crust has the distinct deep dish style texture and the cheese is as melty as you'd imagine. Great place! Pickup only. Worth the trip if you're into deep dish. Got it packaged for a longer trip home (Italian Beef deconstructed and pizza uncut). When we got home, it was still hot enough to eat though. The sausage was spectacular. Really well spiced. Good texture. They've got their own thing going. It was good. For Nashville it's the best I've had. And it's better than some I've had in Chicago. Italian beef was great too. Unique roll. Giardiniera was standard, but they have some home made they are making that I'm looking forward to trying. Cool people for sure. Worth supporting. They took good care of me. read more

Being from the south side of Chicago, Italian beef is one of my comfort foods. When I visit Chicago, this is what I crave even more than pizza. I heard about this place and I was not disappointed! After hearing all the hype on Facebook about Gios, we wanted to give it a try. Being from Chicago, we're desperate for some good pizza around Nashville.... We're still looking. Ordered a thin crust and a beef. True chicagoans enjoy a tasty thin crust, and know that deep dish is for tourists. First the beef. It was very meh. there's better places around town. It doesn't have much flavor, no gravy offered with it, and it was hardly dipped. The giardiniera left something to be desired. You could tell it is homemade, but the sweet peppers were decent. Now for the main attraction, the pizza. We were so excited to bite into it, only to find a flavorless square greeting us in return. NO flavor to the crust, NO flavor to the sauce. Sooo disappointing seeing the amount of 5 star reviews they've received. I think these "Chicagoans" have been away from home too long and are ok with mediocre food. read more

Saw the interview by Axios Nashville and, being from Chicago has to check it out. If you're from Chicago - like the real city limits Chicago - you probably grew up eating Tavern style pizza. They've nailed it. And, they've got some of the best Italian beef I've found in town. The guys there are bootstrapping the whole thing themselves. I'll for sure be back and hope they can survive. Being from Chicago and moving to TN I can say my family and I were getting frustrated in the pursuit to find a really good tavern pizza. We came across someone on Facebook from Chicago raving about Gio's and how great it was. We decided to give it a try and it's now our new staple. The company is very new and works out of a small little building but don't let that keep u from giving them a shot. Their product is outstanding and we make the trip every weekend from Brentwood to Nashville just to get it. We moved to Nashville about 5 years ago from the suburbs of Chicago and this pizza is legit! We got the 16" Tavern Sausage and it was delicious. The sausage was real Italian sausage, none of that frozen stuff. The crust was thin and crispy on the edges. Can't wait to try the deep dish. We will be back for sure!!! read more
