It was sooo flavorful! The chicken dinner was amazing too, and the honey thyme jus really pulled everything together. The homemade cornbread and biscuit were such a nice touch. Just what I needed after a long day. While I waited for my food, I took advantage of the happy hour cocktail specials, and the Old Fashioned was delicious too. Now, I saw from pictures on the wall, it is an institution among political powerhouses and celebrities passing through. This was my third visit, and my husband's first. We arrived early evening, just after a matinee at the Fox, as the convenient website showed about a 15 minute or less wait. Parking right behind the restaurant was a benefit, so we went right on in. I love that they offer you a signature sweet tea while you wait, and we were seated very quickly. Our waiter was warm and hospitable, but that's really where the good experience ended. It's charming to write your own orders out on the check, which surely makes everything easier in the kitchen. I like that they give you a basket of warm yeast rolls and cornbread upon seating. It's just a personal preference for me, as a native Georgian, that I believe that southern cornbread should NEVER have sugar (that's a corn muffin, and doesn't belong on my plate). I only requested water, and lemons for my water (it took three tries before I ever got them). I ordered a simple vegetable plate, with squash casserole, fried green tomatoes, greens and sweet potato casserole. The squash was good, if a little rich, the fried green tomatoes (which can be risky if the green tomatoes doesn't have a bit of tanginess to them) were over-battered, overcooked and tough. The greens were quite good, the sweet potato casserole was heavenly perfection, with lightly crispy topping beneath slightly browned marshmallows. That tasted like my late mama and my grandmother before her prepared for us. My husband eats high protein and low carb, but saw some good options on the menu it. He ordered the salmon, which is not typically "southern", and came with side dishes. He ordered a garden salad as an appetizer...but, oh, my stars. 40 minutes later, he still had no salad, and I still had no lemons for my water, plus we were both out of water. The tables were not overly crowded, and our waiter really tried to build relationship with us. He was genuinely personable, but unfortunately that doesn't make you feel better when you haven't been delivered your meal in nearly an hour. When our meal finally was delivered, we asked for the check right away so we could settle our bill and get away, as we had been away from our pets already longer than we like. We still had to wait about 10 minutes for the check. All in all, it was disappointing and sad. I absolutely hate to give a negative review to an institution, particularly one that serves what I call "home cooking", as it's my favorite cuisine other than Greek and Italian and French and Japanese, and ...you get the idea. We are foodies. I love dining out, and we love cooking and entertaining. This is probably my last visit to Mary Mac's, however. My book club has been wanting to come for a luncheon, and my national sorority is due to come to Atlanta for our 2028 convention, bringing a few thousand ladies from all over the country. I always love being able to recommend authentic southern cuisine, but I honestly can't recommend it now. It shares a lot with an vacant Dollar Tree & a few other businesses. Lock your car & be aware of your surroundings because you never know what you may see. That is honestly the way to be anywhere on MLK drive. When you get inside, the place is set up cafeteria line style with booths for dining in if you choose too. The prices are listed on the wall and they serve breakfast and lunch/dinner food with the prices listed clearly on the wall and daily specials also. You order by standing in line & they place your food into a styrofoam box & you can eat it there or take it home. I opted to take mine to go. I waited in line for about ten minutes which I hear is good for this place. I honestly did not know what I was going to order until I saw the fresh fried pork chops come out (please see my picture). Not only did they look fresh, but they were big, crispy & well seasoned. The meat only option included two and the price was more than right. I will be back for those again the next time I am in the mood for some soul food.

There is a sign above the counter on the right for takeout orders. The menu is simple. It's fried chicken. There are sides like slaw and baked beans with a few appetizers, but mostly it's chicken. Once our order was placed, it only took about ten minutes to get our food. One thing we noticed while waiting was the cook was checking the internal temperature of each piece of chicken as it came out of the fryer. This was very much appreciated and ensured every piece was cooked to perfection. Constant quality checks like that show they take their product seriously and do not rely only on a timer to tell them when it is done. All the chicken was crispy on the outside and moist and tender on the inside. While moist, the meat was not dripping with juices that ran down your arm or left a puddle on your plate. All the flavor was locked into the chicken. The baked beans were good, maybe nothing special but certainly a good accompaniment to the chicken. The slaw was also decent. The mac and cheese was good as well. One note of caution. The chicken seasoning is spicy. If you are used to large chain spicy versions, this is more than that. The flavor is great but the spiciness will get your attention. As long as you are aware of that, you will very much enjoy this chicken.
