This is the best Kareoke spot in Houston. Management and staff are always amiable and hospitable. Good looking, mixed, crowd and great sound. The bar has TV's which is great for catching my basketball games while out in good company. Their Wednesday night Steak Night is great at a steal of $12 bucks. Overall this is a great karaoke joint. Their pop-up food specials are delicious. Diverse crowd and wide variety of songs. The only draw back is the DJ you get. One of them is funny. Polite and works the crowd well. The other is kind of a douche. If he doesn't know you, he will skip your turn. Ignore you when you go to the booth to request a song. But he is super chill with the regulars. All the times I have gone I have felt welcomed. The day the other DJ was there we all felt a difference. Glitter differentiates itself by being a truly interactive place. What I like most about Glitter is that, whether you are alone or with a group, you feel included in the fun going on around you. The DJs are personable, which is really important for me, and the bartenders are knowledgeable and patient when you don't know what you want. They have private rooms of varying sizes, pop-up chefs on occasion, and plenty of regulars to keep the party going. One cool thing to note is that the wall in the lavatory area is a chalk board and makes for really cool pics that you and your friends can personalize yourself. read more

I had a terrible experience at Glitter and will not return. My party of three (me, my girlfriend, and another friend) and I were about to enter when the doorman, who later turned out to also be the manager, demanded that we throw out (or eat!) our boxed pizza outside. We'd consciously kept our leftovers from dinner downtown, so I was very upset about this policy: other bars and restaurants will just stow your leftovers, but that was not the policy here. I expressed my disappointment but regardless acquiesced to the request. When the three of us walked in, we easily found a seat and began ordering drinks. After browsing through the song book, I decided to try "Doo doo doo (Heartbreaker)" by the Rolling Stones, a song I'd never seen on a karaoke list before. I was very excited about trying my hand and voice at this song when I gave my slip to the KJ. He looked at it, then nodded to me. Perhaps 20 minutes later, another member of my party put in a song. And then she was called first. This didn't make sense, so when I asked the KJ what was going on, he said that the rotation was by table. This explanation still doesn't make sense because I put my request in first, and several of the other singers were called up repeatedly. He said it would be 11 songs until I was up. I was unhappy about this, but I had gone to this place in order to sing, so I waited. One member of my party, perhaps an hour later, pointed out that far more than 11 songs had passed, and several of the repeat singers were up again, again. One of the bartenders pointed out the manager after we asked to speak with him/her. I approached the manager and told him what was going on. After politely listening he said "You sound like you're yelling. I wasn't there with the KJ, but from outside, you came off like a dick. I'm not taking sides or saying anything, but maybe that's what's going on." We finished our drinks, the last of maybe four overpriced rounds, paid, and left. Oh, one more thing: my friend didn't put her own song in the rotation, my girlfriend, a cute white girl did. The KJ put the song in the rotation almost immediately. When my girlfriend went up to complain about how I was treated, the KJ was instantly receptive and eager to put her back into the rotation. When he realized she was complaining about our treatment, he grudgingly tried to appease her by finding a place in the rotation. Similarly, when I was up at the empty bar to order a drink, the bartenders walked by me and attended to patrons who came up after me. Needless to say, these customers were far more reflective in the limited lighting of the bar. Need I say more? Arbitrary, mean-spirited, racist service is all that Glitter has to offer. read more

Not only are there a volumes of songs ready to be slaughtered at the alter of Karaoke, there is a palpable vibe of love for karaoke. I mean- when you have a door-guy that WRECKS Stevie Ray- Texas Flood, you know you are in a different kind of joint. The drinks are reasonable for a entertainment/drink joint and there are options.... too many options. Served up by a guy who calls himself Tomcat (a real kidder that guy) who is ready with a wink for the ladies and a terrible karaoke selection to go with the cold glasses of courage that he slings. There are private rooms that are super legit and can be set-up with booze bottles and mixers. Where is my microphone? There is no reason this place wont become the de-facto joint for drizzly Thursday nights, girls night out (so says my wife), and the satisfaction of being a rockstar for 3 minutes and 23 seconds. I love this place. The owners, brothers Terry and Robin Wong, are two of the most amazing, genuine people in Houston. Extremely nice guys, super friendly, and always aiming to please. The bartenders try their hardest to remember your name and drink, and make you feel at home. The bar itself gets PACKED. Thankfully it's not uncomfortable or tense, but still, it can get packed. Wednesday nights are THE night. Steak night is hard to pass up at Glitter. Grill master Quy is damn good with the steaks, and the sides change from time to time, but are amazing. Okay, I'll begin this by saying I'm not a singer. (Except the night I graduated from college, and I heard that I did a fairly decent rendition of Jay Z's "99 Problems"...) The drinks are REALLY GOOD and the staff is very attentive; even one of the owners (Terry) personally hosts everyone, making sure guests are all having a great time. Robbie (the other owner) tends bar alongside Tod, and they make sure you're lubed up enough to get onstage and belt out that Patsy Cline, Frank Sinatra, or Eminem song you've been practicing in your shower. They do have an extensive collection of beer, and a good selection of liquors, too. Now to the food: Wednesday nights are STEAK NIGHT! $12 gets you a 12+ oz steak with two sides - all expertly marinated and cooked (usually with a Sous-Vide method) by the Houston-famous Grillmaster Quy. The guy knows what he's doing, that's for sure. These aren't some rinky-dink steaks, either. I'm talking about slabs of meat about an inch thick or more, perfectly cooked to your preference. Just a little backstory - this Quy/Robbie/Terry team got together to do a steak night which just started out as a project for fun, and ended up being so popular that they implemented the weekly steak nights because of the huge demand. Don't get there too late and expect to still get a steak, because they regularly sell out around 11. For sides, my favorites are the baked corn on the cob, Robbie's fried rice, and the tater tots. Those damn tater tots. *salivates* Aside from the steaks, DO NOT NEGLECT THE SANDWICHES if you know what's good for you (and your stomach). Most importantly - there's a sandwich named "The Terry" that is loaded with rib-eye chunks served on a baguette with a Hawaiian marinade and lightly spiced Japanese wasabi mayonnaise, and has some red cabbage for texture... and bacon - because TEXAS. It is served with your choice of french fries or tater tots, but I already mentioned my tots allegiance earlier in this review (though I must admit that the french fries are really, really good, too). I've purposely gone out of my way to Glitter on non-steak-nights, just to obtain one of the Terry Sandwiches. Semi-related, but I've also had to draw a line with "friends" who thought they could just keep nibbling off my plate of fries; some people are just habitual line-steppers, and you have to let them know your limits. If you're into the Houston scene, this is a great place to go. The crowd is full of super friendly and cool people just having fun and enjoying themselves. On any given night, you're bound to run into local celebrities (think: Houston Texans, local famous chefs, etc.), so bring your camera if you're still using a potato-phone without one. I have never been to any other karaoke bar that offers as much as Glitter does. Its like a modern Cheers, but with awesome food, singing, and no weirdos that lurk around every other episode. I really didn't know what to expect from a place called "Glitter Karaoke," but since I was just looking for a good time, I left my apprehension at home before stepping foot into this karaoke complex for the first time. Turns out, this place was better than I expected. We stayed in the main karaoke room that housed a full bar and a stage. The server was attentive and she always brought out our drinks right after we ordered them -- maybe it was because it wasn't too packed -- but, nonetheless, it was still great service. Their Jack and Cokes were strong and for a little more than 6 bucks a pop, the bartender gave us what we paid for. Now for the experience: having "I'm on a Boat" butchered in the background, a slight buzz going, and the blue hue surrounding us from the neon lights really made me feel like I was, in a sense, on a mother f***ing boat. read more

If you're afraid of getting up on a stage to sing in front of strangers, then don't worry--it's kind of dark in Glitter. If you're afraid of the dark, then how do you function? My friends and I walked into Glitter on a Friday night around 10pm, and the place was bustling with people. The main room houses long tables, the bar, and the stage. A kind-of-hidden hallway on the left leads to smaller private rooms but more on that later. If you've never karaoke'd in public, this is how it works at Glitter: you comb through the large binder of songs on the table, write down what song you want to sing or rap, hand it to the DJ, and wait for the DJ to call you up to the stage while listening to people sing songs that you, up until that point, forgot existed. I had enough liquid courage in me to sing Aerosmith's "Dream On" by myself and Boyz II Men's "I'll Make Love to You" with my friends. I noticed that Glitter has shorter versions of songs. I can appreciate that because people don't want to wait forever for their turn on the stage. Plus, who wants to hear the full version of GNR's "November Rain" anyway? Especially if it's not Axl singing. The binders seemed to have many current songs, though my group wasn't there long enough for me to look if they had Lady Gaga. So, to my private-karaoke-room story: I wandered into one of the empty private rooms and sat down, contemplating what I would do the rest of the evening. Some me time. After a few minutes, a young couple entered the room kissing. Oblivious to my presence for a couple of minutes, I was too shocked to say anything or move. The girl then noticed me and exclaimed, "Dude, why you trying to [female private parts]-block me?!" My immediate reaction was to apologize, get out of there, and let them "sing their duet" in private. All in all, a fun stop at Glitter on a Friday night. Glitter...love the awesomely cheesy name. Reminds me of Gem and the Holograms, glamor and glitter, fashion and fame. I have been here twice now. The first time, I would rate my experience a strong 4. It was an impromptu night with a small group. I had ample amounts of stage time, decent drinks and drunk food late in the night. All in all it was a great time, which set the bar pretty high for experience number 2. I brought a group of around 15 there for a bachelorette party. Everything except the DJ was great. I noticed the DJ only picked songs he liked. Like for instance, if the bachelorette wanted to belt out a drunken rendition of Celine Dion, All Coming Back to Me Now, she never got called up, meanwhile people sang Journey's Don't Stop Believin twice! I am all for Journey...but I don't think any song should be called twice in the same night. I noticed that the song order was called by table...so table 1 gets a turn, then table 2, etc. That's great for the table of two people who got to sing their favorite country classic (barf!) every 6th song. But for the table of 15, many people who put in a song request at 10 pm never got called at all....including our bachelorette. It took us going up there a number of times for them to let her sing. Dude, it's kind of her night, and she is the reason why we are there buying copious amounts of booze and bringing you business. I think you should let her sing a song. So needless to say, my second experience was 1 star experience. So i averaged the two and rounded up. 3 stars. I wish I could give zero stars. I have never been treated so poorly or been so angry as I was after spending an evening at Glitter last weekend. The bouncers and staff were antagonistic, aggressive, and just plain rude. BOTTOM LINE -- We were pushed, yelled at, and thrown out of here for no other foreseeable reason than questioning a charge on a receipt. When we left, they still had our friends' cards and wouldn't give them back. They double charged us gratuity after pocketing cash we gave them. The long of it -- 1. They double-charged gratuity and wouldn't let us choose whose card to put the tab on. The birthday girl's husband just happened to be the first one to see the check. He asked about the double grat, and the waitress said if he had a problem she'd be happy to send the bouncer over. What? He said to take the card and that he'd talk to someone on the way out. 2. Before his card even returned, a big dude came in and told us to "get the f*ck" out. We, of course, are confused, mid-song, unaware that we've done anything wrong. Our friend who is without credit card asks if we can just wait for his card to which the guy says, "No, you f*cking leave now." We still have no idea what we've done. 3. We start to leave the room, the whole time being prodded by this big guy who insists on following us, very closely and barking at us to get out the whole time. We're all just confused and trying to figure out what's going on. Our other friend, who left her card at the bar to secure the room tried to stop to get it back, and was made to go outside. We still have no idea what we've done. 4. We're standing outside, calling cabs, when the rude barker comes back out. We're just trying to get cabs. He proceeds to insult us and tell us to "f*cking go home" to which I say, "We're just calling a cab" very calmly. The guy then proceeds to throw his hand directly in my face -- like so close that I could smell it...gross. I was under the impression that bouncers were supposed to diffuse situations, but this one just continued to goad everyone in the group (who remained surprisingly calm). We still have no idea what we've done wrong. 5. We still have no idea what we did wrong. The most we could get out of another guy was that we "made the waitress unhappy." Our waitress was nice but a little inattentive. It was a busy Saturday night. We were fine with it. She checked on us one time after we made our initial orders, was wearing a coat like she was ready to go, and said last call. She also took cash from two of our friends, but didn't apply it to the bill. Other than us questioning the double gratuity, we're not sure what she could possibly be unhappy about. Horrible place. "I'm not into Karaoke places," that's what I used to think. Glitter has slowly changed my opinion and defied my preconceptions of a karaoke joint. The place is really quite amazing and it's slowly become one of my pit stops during the late night hustle and bustle of the club scene. What's awesome about Glitter is well, everything. Its interior is sleek and sexy. It doesn't feel like a karaoke joint at all . . . yet it is. What I mean by that is that I've always found karaoke places lame--not so here. The crowd is always cool and the people watching fantastic. The staff is awesome and the food great. I recommend the pizza. Great for those late night hungers. If you are fortunate, you can catch Mark Soto (the giant doorman) sing a tune. He'll wow you with his singing. It's really quite the treat! Five stars--no doubt! read more

This is my go-to Karaoke spot. Always a great atmosphere, I have never had a bad time here. Honestly. The only thing that bothers me is the prices of the drinks. This isnt a premium bar or anything, so dont price your liquor like its one of these spots. The rooms in the back are good for parties of about 10-12 people, beyond that its a little crowded. CaRRot-Okay! That's the proper way to say it! At least in Chinese. Glitter in Alief has always been my favorite hang out place. I have been going there since it first open. The new location in Midtown draws a more mature crowd. Glitter has always drawn a hip crowd even at the new location. People come here to have a good time and sing their life away....a couple of shots usually does the trick!! I love their drink prices, which is amazingly low for Midtown. Now if you want to practice singing, the best time to come is on Wednesday because it is not that crowded but if you want to have a good time with a hip crowd come on the Friday or Saturday. Glitter doesn't offer much in food but maybe some snacks like pizza, hot wings, and egg rolls. My favorite: Flambe squid and the Vietnamese vinegar sausages. They do have free Chex Mix or nuts at the bar. I love their logo with those Jappie eyes! hmm... I wonder why? =P Last time I was here there was an obnoxious, immature crowd that deliberately erased all the songs on the computer in a private room. Grow up people! Good thing they had the big, bouncer there! Celebrated a friend's birthday here, and even though we didn't have a private room, eventually we felt like the whole place turned into one big party. I liked that this karaoke bar is small and a bit more intimate. Even though we were strangers sitting at different tables, by the end of the night, we were all drunk singing and dancing together. There's no book to scroll through for selecting songs, but you can basically write down ANY song, and there's a huge chance they'll have it. I heard everything form Rick James, to Backstreet Boys, to Journey. Someone even sang Donny Hathaway's "This Christmas" - it was February, LOL. Take a shot. Audio system needs lots of work - too much echo and mixing is not good, sometimes too much noise in the system, or echo, or equalized incorrectly so that you only hear bass in your voice etc...Need an experienced mixer d.j. 2. No electronic song selection...you have to search in books which takes 40% of your time there. The organization of the lists are not consistent. 3. No wine coolers. Just mixed drinks and beer. 4. Parking is confusing and you can get towed if you park on the wrong part of the street...even if there is no warning sign. Avoid parking on the corner with the beige/yellowish two story old apartment building. If the cons were fixed (all easily done in my opinion), this place would destroy all competition in Houston and easily be THE place to go sing. OK, in all fairness, the parking would be near impossible to fix so that is forgivable. read more

How have I waited this long to review this place? You may want to take this review with a grain of salt since I am a regular patron of this magnificent venue. But, the more often you go, you will see why I do love this little corner of heaven. Firstly, I had gone to the old Glitter in Alief in the early 2000's. Times were different back then, but the shift in location did not change the attitude of the owners and their reflection on the staff. If you have the pleasure of meeting the Wong brothers, they will treat you as if you have been their friends forever. They are fiercely loyal, unabashedly inclusive to make sure that you are having a good time, and ultimately concerned about your well-being and safety. I've had many a night where Terry would put his arm around my neck, pull me in close and look me dead in the eye and ask me, "You OK, Bubba?" before he would allow me to walk out and make my way home. I'm sure he has done this a million times, but he means it every single time - their heart is with every single patron (unless you act like a jackass) and they do want to see you back. I've moved to Austin but I come back weekly to Houston. Sure, it's to visit family, friends and to get some work done. But the bonus part of my weekly sojourns to my hometown is that I get to go to Glitter. It's like I never left! Growing up and watching the TV show "Cheers" I always wanted a place where I could walk in and, as the song goes, "everybody knows your name." I've found it with Glitter. Come for the karaoke, be wowed by the delicious food that you would swear comes from a gastropub and drinks that, as the bartenders get to know you, they seem to get more heavy handed, and stay for the fun-loving atmosphere. Karaoke spot in downtown Houston. It is a very small compact spot, definitely don't want to be caught in a fire here as there is no direct route out of the building. The vibes are awesome big groups, small groups all having fun and laughing at themselves and others. Unfortunately there is no system for seat patrons who want to be seated. With that being said, an open seating system was assumed. When we asked the manager about seating he was very rude and walked away while we were speaking to him. This was my first time here and probably will not be back. I don't feel as a customer who is willing to spend money at your establishment that you should be spoken to rudely or brushed off. I've been hearing about their steak for years! I finally had time to check it out last night. I messaged my friend Jonathan who works the door to reserve me a table. My friend, Annabelle was working and took care of the group I was with. I ordered a water and the steak. The steak came out pretty quick like 15 minutes. It's a huge steak with dirty rice, a roll, and a salad. The salad was good, the dirty rice was ok. The steak was really flavorful and cooked just like I wanted medium rare. It was $12! I've been to Glitter a few times with my girlfriend and various friends, and there are a lot of positive aspects. The stage / seating is set up well, with various tables in a common area in front of the main stage. It's easy to watch the performers sing their hearts out, and it's also pretty easy to get to the stage when it's your turn, at least if you don't have to navigate through the area near the bar (which tends to be super crowded). We generally get the same waitress when we go, and she's really nice. I've noticed that when the place is not too busy, she's super attentive, which is great. However, when the place gets more crowded, it seems like she's a bit overworked and I've found myself wanting another drink for a long time (I eventually just go up to the bar and order it there). I think they just need to hire more people, to be honest. The bartender is also nice, and I've never had any problem ordering my drinks and getting them promptly. Finally, the song catalog is pretty darn good, with newer songs available as well (which is not a given for some karaoke bars). HOWEVER, the one big negative to this place is the DJ. I wouldn't say I've had any particular bad interactions with him (not any good ones either, though), but the guy definitely plays favorites and sometimes you'll put in a song and watch someone go up multiple times before you get to sing. That's super frustrating! Another reviewer recommended that you tip the DJ - no way! I'm not going to tip the DJ to get normal, fair service. It feels like he loses / misplaces your song choice as well, so sometimes you'll be waiting for an hour or two only to go up there and discover that you haven't even been in the queue. For our most recent visit, we got to the bar at 8:30 PM, and we were pretty much the first ones there. On a previous visit, the karaoke has started at 9 PM, but that night, it started at 10 PM - I assume that's because there weren't many people there. That's silly, though - we would have loved to get a few songs in while the line was short! Overall, I do like this place, but I don't think I'll be coming back unless one of my friends really wants to go. If we really feel like karaoke, I'll suggest we go to Spotlight instead - Glitter has a lot of positives, but the DJ sours the experience. read more

Hands down, one of the worst karaoke bars I've been too. First off, they put "reserved" signs on tables that aren't reserved. Second, there's a $15 minimum per person. Third, they don't have a list of songs that are available (you have to download an App). Fourth, the people that come to sing here are the drama kids from high school that didn't make the American Idol tryouts. Fifth, they'll play EMO Evenanses songs all night but they won't play songs that get the whole bar poppin like Love Shack or Baby Got Back. On the plus side, they do make a strong drink. In summary, if you're from the high school drama crowd looking to rekindle your 15 minutes of fame, this is your jam. If you're looking for a good time with your friends and not a serious singer, go to Spotlight down the street. You'll pay more for weak drinks, but at least you'll have fun. read more

Glitter is hands down my favorite midtown hang. It's always a fun vibe and has all kinds of entertainment on top of karaoke including video games, darts and even a pool table. They have great drinks and food as well especially the seaweed popcorn! The staff is also super friendly and treats me like family every time I walk in the door. It's like a modern day version of Cheers with a singing stage! read more
