I needed to get my door lock changed due to an attempt to break into my vehicle and also get a new key cut for a 2nd vehicle. I noticed that Go Pro Locksmith had a good amount of 5 star reviews so I decided to get a quote and scheduled for the following weekend. Phil A showed up and advised that he had already prepared a new lock and 2 new keys. I advised him that's a bit of a hassle to always carry 2 keys around just to unlock and start the vehicle and he said he would re-pin the keylock mechanism to match my original key, which was good. As he was re-pinning the keylock, I asked him if he would like me to remove the doorcard so there's no time wasted and also because I am able to remove the doorcard fairly quickly with no damage (you'll know why later). He said no and that he will handle it. He did not disconnect the wiring from the door switch mechanism and let the doorcard hang and drag on the ground. Roughly 30-45 minutes into replacing the keylock, it seemed that he was struggling so I asked him what is the issue. He went to his vehicle and returned with a dremel stating that a bracket needs to be cut in the middle in order to remove the keylock from the door. He then said "I have worked on all Honda's for 12 years and have done this before. It is required." I looked up a few youtube videos and a few car forums advising that there is a pin that needs to be removed in order to remove the keylock. He could not locate this pin so I was able to locate and remove the pin. He eventually got the keylock aligned and was trying to put the bracket on, but then he noticed that he had lost one of the bolts. He did find a longer bolt in his box of spare bolts that had the same thread pitch and head size, but had to modify it by cutting it a bit (not sure what happened to this bolt but I did not see it again afterwards). I also went through my spare bolts and was able to find an old radiator mounting bolt that had the same thread pitch and head for him to use (also did not see this bolt again afterwards). He asked me to help him with installing a small screw back into place, which was no problem. It seemed like he was in a rush to get this completed since he already had taken a couple calls and also a few 'smoke breaks.' Eventually, he was able to complete the keylock replacement and all that needed to be done was to put back the doorcard. I again, asked him if he wanted me to put back the doorcard since I have done it multiple times before, while he cuts a new key for a different vehicle. He was very adamant and said that he will do it. That was where I had made the mistake. As soon as I saw him using a power drill at a high torque setting to put back screws that only need to be hand tightened, I already knew that was a red flag. He put the doorcard back on, tested the keylock and remote and began cutting the key for the 2nd vehicle. I then inspected the doorcard and doorswitch and noticed that the doorcard was scratched all over and it looked like he had attempted to use a flathead on the doorswitch (photos attached). I advised him of the damage and of course, he said it was not him that caused the damage. Keep in mind, I was watching him the entire time as he worked on my vehicle. This doorcard and doorswitch has also not been touched by any other person besides myself and now him. After I had advised him that the damages were not there prior to him working on my vehicle, he began raising his voice and yelling and questioning "Why did you not tell me when it happened? I did not cause the damage." I again advised that he had the doorcard dragging on the ground the entire 4-hours that he was working on the vehicle and he became even more aggressive and advised that he was "being very patient with me." As a paying customer and also in a professional standpoint, that is very unprofessional. How are YOU being patient with me? I advised to him that I was EXTREMELY patient with his "12 years of locksmith experience" and clearly it shows that he doesn't know anything about workmanship. He then kept stating that he wants to complete the transaction. I asked him what the total is and his reply was, "Did you not look at the quote I gave you?" Regardless of if I looked at the quote or not, you don't need to be rude and unprofessional about YOUR job that you did terrible at. He gave me the 'new cut key' for the 2nd vehicle and advised he will not charge, I paid him the money and we split ways. Of course the 2nd cut key didn't work properly. Advised him that the key wasn't good and he returned and tried to cut it multiple times. In the end, advised he had to order a new key and he would have to return again. I also removed the doorcard the following day since I heard a bolt come off when closing the door, and noticed that he had used the incorrect bolt for the bracket (photo attached). I spoke with owner Friday, 8/17, about needing keys cut for ignition and doors on my car. He mentioned it would need a new ignition cylinder and gave a price. Said, "Ok, see ya tomorrow." On the good side he was on time, has a fully equipped large mobile workshop, is polite and easy to deal with. Door key gets cut and it is a bit rough, burrs, galls on edges but it works.**Rephrase; Maybe I can get it to work, sure hope so.** Next is pulling apart dashboard, a task i dislike but for someone who does it frequently should be ok. I asked to see the new cylinder and it had not been picked up. A lot of mumbling about that kind of stuff is a mechanics job, not locksmith. Nobody likes dealing with ignition parts for a lot of reasons, many valid. His drill would not get an angle on the barrel to go through case and tang. So, he showed me where I need to take out the old one, find new and install. He did give break on door key. It was Saturday and it is quite a ways from Mountain View/Palo Alto. At a minimum get a small 90 degree head drill for working on small parts in very confined spaces. And tell the customer prior to setting appointment if you don't want part of job. read more
