Oh man! I've missed this buffet. It's been 1 year and 3 months since I was here last, but I won't wait that long again. The weekend buffet at Godavari in Cumberland is the best Indian buffet I've ever been to! Tons of variety, high quality, authentic and they keep the food fresh. I could not get enough of their Double ka meetha dessert! It's like an Indian bread pudding with bread soaked in hot milk, spices, sugar and nuts on top. We drove from Massachusetts to try out this place. We have heard about their buffet but it's only offered on Sundays. We got a dosa to share and a non-veg thaali each. The dishes in the thaali are chefs selection, but it's a great option if you want to try a bunch of different things. The food was decently spiced, something you don't get too often in the Boston area. The chai was also very well done, withe less masala. Overall, great option for good South Indian food. You'll also get a lot of leftovers- definitely bang for the buck! Will definitely be back! read more

So much environmental waste! Styrofoam cups galore where actual dishes should be used. Lack of dishes or dishwasher? Water bottles vs. a pitcher of water and glasses for the table. Came for a promise of 30+ dishes but left wanting. Many of the chafing dishes were dead cold, others were in poor repair and could not be opened or closed without fear of collapse. Three chicken dishes but plenty of possibly vegetarian options (who knows, as many of the dishes were poorly labeled and there was never anyone to ask about it.) Best part was fresh dosas brought to the table. Naan was a bit stale off the buffet. $3.50 for a can of soda, self serve from a fridge. read more

I really, REALLY like this spot. I only ever go on Sunday afternoon for the buffet (which I believe they offer daily). They offer all the crowd pleasers. Think of some of your favorite Indian dishes, yep, it's there. A plethora of options. Not only that, but they are hot, fresh and unbelievably flavorful!! They always have the curry goat, my personal favorite. It is phenomenal!! The heat is spot on and offers an elevation to the already supreme flavors. Beyond all of this, the staff are super friendly. I'm in love. This place is fabulous. It was wide open, for plenty of room to move around. Clean, warm atmosphere. Huge selection of items to try and only $20 per person. Plus, warm welcome from a woman to explain the layout. For so cheap, I was worried the food would be limited or be low quality. Nope in every way possible. I got to try a little bit of everything. Thinking about 20+ items and still didn't try it all (by far). So many things that were amazing and I don't even know what they were! The flavors of the spices in the food was like a party in my mouth. Plus, everything was fresh and well stocked. They provide you bottled water but, you can order a drink if you like. I got my favorite, a mango lasse. Which I highly recommend. It was a little thicker than usual but, again, flavor. Wow. Also, they have little brown balls soaked in some kind of syrup as a dessert item. They don't look great but, please, try them. You won't regret it. The only tips I give to people looking for a wonderful buffet is, 1) their buffet is only on the weekends, 11am-3pm. 2) Go around 12:15, it started to fill up as we were leaving at 1:30. 3) If you're not great with spicy, be careful. It's closer to authentic Indian which has quite a kick. I love spicy but, my husband doesn't. Although, there were a few items that he enjoyed very much. The paneer tikka marsala is delicious and much more mild than other dishes. Over all, 6/5 stars. Highly recommend to anyone searching to adventure outta their comfort zone and try new Indian dishes. Saturday buffet was horrible. Food was cold, chicken was very dry, no spice or no taste whatsoever. Live dosa took forever. Mint drink was overly sweet. Everything was just horrible. I visited on Sunday during the buffet and couldn't believe how many different foods were available. I chose to get the buffet to go and was presented with a large plate with about 10 sections so I was able to try a lot of different dishes. The food was absolutely delicious! I really enjoyed the usual tikka marsala choices but my very favorite dish was the ginger fish! I would go back just for the fish! Luckily with the buffet you will get to try over 20 different choices! Dessert was amazing and the people working there were extremely friendly and helpful! Food quality and service has gone down while prices have gone up. Buffet prices are now at 17$ on Saturdays and 22$ on Sundays. The mutton gravy was lacking salt while there were others with too much salt. The curd rice tasted like it was made out of old rice. Other items did not appear or taste fresh. They have changed all of their recipes or chefs. The food is now so bad, I used to love their vindaloo among other dishes. They all taste watered down and strange. I don't know what happened if they changed employees or management. They used to be absolutely amazing. Very sad. read more

Godavari buffet is always good but the buffet at Rhode Island was exceptional. There were plenty of vegetarian and meat options and all of them tasted great. If I have one feedback its just that the chicken biriyani tasted/smelt like it was not too fresh. I took off one star for that. My favorite was the chaat corner! read more

Buffet is 6ft apart, masks, someone gets your food for you (not really that much fun but something my server made fun for me since it was my first time) Gloves are used and changed 19.99 for each adult to eat The restaurant is uncomfortable- the booth had the table situated so far from me I got tired trying to reach my food. The people working were kind but it's just a rather uncomfortable eating environment during COVID The food was delicious - the 3 stars are bc I like other buffets this one hasnt allowed people to leave with our food - basically ITS A WASTE!!!!a waste of everything from paper plates to food! My first serving (and only) was on 3 paper plates (yes they don't use silverware and china anymore) ... if I wanted more I had to dispose of that and get more ... I just wanted to take what I had left from the 3 plates and our server said we could not. Unfortunately with all going on - something as small as a patron coughing near me could trigger me to want to leave and eat my food later and instead that's the ONE piece they kept traditional. So we found ourselves wondering WHY a restaurant would want to KEEP the food we can't eat instead of letting us take it - during a pandemic. Mmhm. To Management: let folks take their food to go from the buffet. You lose nothing. People are hungry. They paid. And if the food is being trashed - think about if you really want to be a part of a dying system that is fearful you will feed a hungry person That's why buffets in America didn't want you carrying out - bc they want you hungry again It's not sustainable for you to charge that amount and also throw away hundreds of lbs of food! After living in NYC/NJ for way too many years, traveling (before the pandemic) to southeast Asia, I am having a really hard time enjoying the local restaurants here in MA/RI burbs... Not to bash the local cuisine, though I easily could... I just dislike plain boring flavors and mediocre quality. (Burger? No thanks! A sub? Meh. Pizza??? I won't even go there, pizza snob here... ) Godavari is like a breath of fresh (and delicious) air for me. Loved the buffet every time I went (pre-pandemic) and the takeout. This place is delicious and I would dare to say, its among my top 3 go to Indian dining places. The reason being the authenticity, spice levels and never been disappointed. I went during lunch and of course i had the lunch buffet. Indian lunch buffets are amazing! They're great for Indian food lovers and for newbies that want to sample more than one dish! The lunch buffet has a large array of vegetarian and non-vegetarian options. This restaurant is a bit more spice-full and spicy than others that i have noticed and i LOVE it! I have also been here for Dinners and like i mentioned was never dis-appointed ever. The dishes could vary and i usually go by the crowd favorites to be on the safe side. Excellent food. Had an authentic Indian food after long long time. Went on Sunday afternoon. They had only buffet option. Was a bit hesitant at first as I had very bad experience with lunch buffet at other Indian restaurants. The spice level was really good here and that made the dishes much tastier especially chicken and other non veg items. Price was very nominal and the entire buffet cost just 16$ with tax. Would definitely recommend this to others. Found the ambiance good. They had a good parking space. read more

Let me first start out by saying that I am an Indian. I have very high standards for Indian food and Indian restaurants. I am going to begin with the positive: 1) Very nice decor 2) Great Staff This is all the positive that I can think of. The list below is all of the negative: 1) Not a true South Indian Restaurant - I had high expectations here. This is a franchise restaurant with many locations all over the country. My wife loves South Indian food especially Dosa. A true sign of a good Dosa is that it is crisp and thin. Her Dosa was anything but crisp and without flavor. When we ordered the Dosa my wife told the waiter please make sure the Dosa is thin and crisp. Very disappointed. 2) Communication - Even though the staff was friendly, they were hard to understand. It is not that I could not understand their English. It was they spoke very softly. As if they were not confident in the product they were selling. 3) No Juice & Alcohol - They do not have their alcohol license right now. I was told that they should have it very shortly. My wife and I went out to dinner here with our friends and their three year old daughter. If you have little children the only choices that you have for drinks is Soda, Lassi, Chai or Coffee. If you are a family restaurant then you need to carry something for kids. This is not reinventing the wheel. It is common sense. Even McDonald's gets this right. 4) Bland - If you like your Indian food to have taste then this is not the place. I will go through what we ordered and what it tasted like below. Appetizer: Mini Idly - No taste and too dry. Sambar was old and disgusting. Gobi Manchurian - very sweet. Chicken 555 - Very dry. Not spicy. Not sure why they say it is cooked in a spicy sauce. Nothing in this restaurant was spicy. Main Course: Dosa - Not crispy. Sambar was terrible. Chicken Tikka Masala - No taste. The gravy was heated separately from the chicken. I could tell the chicken did not have enough time to immerse in the gravy. It might as well of been grilled chicken breast with the side of tomato gravy. Kakinada Special Fish - This was delicious. This is the only reason this restaurant got a two star. I would return to this restaurant for this dish only. I would not order anything else here. Small pet peeves: When the main course arrived it was missing my wife's Dosa. Nothing was said by the waiter. He should of informed us that the Dosa would take few more minutes. After 10 minutes my wife's Dosa came. By this time our food was getting cold and we were getting very impatient. The food did not seem as if it was created by a true chef. It seems that someone with almost no culinary training prepared the food. The presentation and garnishing on the dishes was lacking. I hope this last part is not true. My wife and I have been driving to Middletown, CT to Udupi Bhavan to have South Indian food. It is far but they have the best South Indian food in the area. Came here for dinner and hosted a party here. From all the local Indian food place this is by far the best tasting place. All the food is extremely unique tasting and strays far enough from the traditional flavors of dishes to enjoy something refreshing but stays close enough so that it still feels authentic. Would highly recommend this local place and they have a decent area on the side for private parties. We went when they were still opening and probably new to being a restaurant so our service wasn't that great, one of our dishes was mistakenly never ordered. Most of the appetizers are overpriced stick to the entrees I would say. read more

This restaurant is closed by order of the Building Inspector of the Town of Cumberland Rhode Island. The orange sign on the door states that the access is for the Exterminator Only. (See fine ballpoint print on lower left hand corner). Not sure how long this place has been closed but I just noticed the orange sign today and drive by there several times a week. My best guess is that it is infested with some sort of pest. Best advice: DO NOT EAT HERE! I never have and now I never will. read more

Went for Saturday lunch buffet. As advertised, there were many food selection but most had no food in them and the food was cold and not fresh. I even saw the workers check up on dishes every 20 mins but nothing was ever filled. Our buffet dishes remained stacked at our table and were never picked up by the waiter who walked by our table over 10x. Overall bad experience. Their grand buffet on Saturday's are amazing! They have a dosa station (you can stuff it however you like. I like it with the spicy sambar) and double the entrees. Their meat (they always do this well. ESP the goat curry) and seafood selection is amazing (their fried calamari and sardines are my favorite). Their veg entrees are so so to me. But I come back every time for the meat and dosa! I am so glad business here is booming! The owners are so nice and this really is one of the best places in RI! read more

Love South Indian food. There is no better Indian food in the USA than Godavari. New owner since August. Were so happy when we called and they were open, they had been closed for a long time previously and many previous owners. New ownership is wonderful, very attentive to customers, before they were not. They would wander away. We always came back frequently because the food was the best even though service wasn't good. Now best of both worlds. So glad the new ownership is very nice and so much better and the food is as awesome as ever!!! They are doing dosa night on Thursdays with assortment of dosas of which some are not featured on the menu, including m&m dosa for kids. Delicious Indian ice cream to go by the check out. I stopped by here twice, and thought it was okay both times. I've only had North Indian food before, but I like spicy cuisine, so I was excited to give this place a try. Mango Lassi - grainy, lukewarm. I was not too crazy about it. Samosas - okay. Gobi 65 - cauliflower fritters. I liked it. Paneer Godavari Biryani - very good, the rice is so good. Punjabi Lamb Curry - nice one. Chicken 555 - so freaking good. I tried mild, medium and hot. All are good and bearable but hot is just violently hot and kind of looses some of the flavors in it. Medium is a way to go. Keep in mind, that medium will be spicy for a person that does not normally eat spicy food. Ginger Fish - go mild. It was so good mild. I tried it hot, and it ruined the dish. Fish is too delicate for that kind of intensity. The service for me was both times pretty bad. I was constantly chasing down the server for either water, or to add to an order. When I waved him down, he was miserable. We were one of two tables in the restaurant - so he wasn't busy. It was my second time there, so I had a few questions about the menu - he was not having any of it, just sighing, impatient and annoyed. Also, they were cleaning the buffet area with huge wet rags, and those painter/plastic buckets. The food was ok, quite spicy and flavorful. My low rating is more for the service and establishment. There were only a few parties at the restaurant and many servers there and yet we were not attended to very well and the servers seemed disheveled. Our server answered his phone while we were ordering. The food runner brought the food quickly, but there weren't knifes set at the table and it took a long time to get anyones attention. The place is a little dilapidated which I don't usually criticize, but there were flies in the dining room and the floor wasn't clean and the bathrooms were falling apart. No toilet paper holder in one stall and only a giant uninstalled roll sitting on top of empty holder in the other. read more

PREFACE We like Indian food. We eat it regularly (not novices). We came here for Sunday brunch. Though it was hot and dark inside we decided we wouldn't let the atmosphere deter us. The dishes were dirty and after picking through five to get to a useable one, I walked down the row of six different rice selections, four or so vegetables and chaffers full of sauce but completely missing the meat or chicken which once was in it. The buffet was not ending for an hour still but it didn't appear it was being refilled at all. When I got to the table I knew immediately what was in store for me as my dining partner was pushing the food around trying to find something edible and taking poor cuts of bony chicken from his mouth. The food overall lacked any dimension of flavor. All the items tasted the same (except fried items) and all were heavily spiced with ghost pepper so it was too spicy.
