PREFACE We like Indian food. We eat it regularly (not novices). We came here for Sunday brunch. Though it was hot and dark inside we decided we wouldn't let the atmosphere deter us. The dishes were dirty and after picking through five to get to a useable one, I walked down the row of six different rice selections, four or so vegetables and chaffers full of sauce but completely missing the meat or chicken which once was in it. The buffet was not ending for an hour still but it didn't appear it was being refilled at all. When I got to the table I knew immediately what was in store for me as my dining partner was pushing the food around trying to find something edible and taking poor cuts of bony chicken from his mouth. The food overall lacked any dimension of flavor. All the items tasted the same (except fried items) and all were heavily spiced with ghost pepper so it was too spicy. First time here place hasn't been open very long. Service is a little slow but they are very pleasant. The food came out quickly and hot. The food is a little spicy but tasty. There were 5 of us for dinner. They have a kids menu with good choices. We ordered some appetizers two different of the 3 were really good. the two appetizers we had that we liked were the mini idlis and pakodas. On the kids menu they offer a Chocolate Dosa which the kids liked very much. We ordered the Masala Dosa, Chana Masala and Chicken Tikka Masala. Previously I ate many times at Godavari , the taste was really good. So I Ordered Mysore bonda , inside it is not cooked and also no chutney provided. Chicken biryani is not at all spicy. Chicken lollypop are not spicy though I have mentioned perticularly. Godavari is loosing the quality and spicyness which it is actually famous for. Good Telugu cuisine in Rhode Island. Their rice things are incredible and bona fide. Obliging staff and we'll divided out tables will guarantee you have a decent eating background. We hosted our Baby Shower event and everyone had a blast.They were very professional and extremely nice to work with. I had take away from Godavari this past Monday night. I got chicken 555 and Hyderabadi Biryani. I woke up in the middle of night sick with vomiting and diarrhea. During the day had low grade fever and couldn't eat anything for almost 2 days. I am pretty sure the food from Godavari gave me food poisoning. Extremely bad experience , needless to say will never go back and recommend if you do want to eat there please make sure the food is fresh and stored at proper temperatures. read more

They had no food left and none was coming out. My first time there warm water and spotty service at best. All of the hot pans were empty. They continued to take in new customers knowing they had no chicken dishes left. All the pans were just sauce. The tea pot was empty and the cold juice offered was not working. As an Indian, I have fairly high standards for Indian food, and I must say I was very content with the spices and flavors of the dosas-sambar and masala. However, true South Indian dosa should be nice and crisp, this masala dosa was not. The mango lasis were delicious. The decor and music was very nice, and staff were very friendly. The service on the other hand, was not too great---we had to wait 25 min for our dad to get his paper dosa (by this time we were done with our meals) after speaking with the staff, they had removed his dish from the bill. read more

Not satisfied with newer version of this restaurant at Cumberland,RI. They have tried to upgrade themselves on their customer presentation skills and list of dishes on the menu card, but the quality of food is completely changed and is no more the same as it was previous. I was quite upset after my recent visit to this restaurant. Be careful and cautious (especially the families with kids) in SELECTING THE LEVEL OF SPICINESS ON YOUR FOOD. Their current mild level of spiciness on all dishes in menu card will burn your taste buds. My little angel (6 yrs.) who used to be a big fan of their menu dish "Gobi 65" was extremely exicted to revisit them but left the restaurant with a comment "Daddy, we will never come here again". As far as the dishes which were ordered by both me and my spouse weren't also satisfactory. Team Godavari please understand offering discount on food bills after burning the taste buds is never helpful to retain the customers. I have been here twice now. We ordered pickup online and arrived at the location to pick up. The food wasn't ready on time, as the place was PACKED, but the owner personally came out to apologize which eased the stress of the wait. Another time we ordered pickup and was told the food would be ready in 30 minutes. I doubled verified the time, as last time it wasn't ready when they said. The employee assured me it would be ready in 30 minutes. I arrived on time and was asked to wait again, as it wasn't finished. I sat there ANOTHET 35 minutes before it was ready. The guys at the front desk didn't seem as sympathetic as my first visit, in fact they were talking to each other in another language around me, so I didn't feel sympathy in the least. Polar opposite experience from the first time. However, the longer than usual wait was common ground between the two visits. I was a bit disappointed by having to wait 35 minutes longer after arrival. If I knew it would have taken over 1 hour to get our food, I would have gone elsewhere. By the time I got home, we were eating dinner past 10pm because of the wait. The food was very good, but I cant come here as the takeout wait time is unpredictable for dinner. read more

I really wanted to like this restaurant. Unfortunately I had several issues with my takeout order. Minor issues... it took over 40 minutes to prepare our order, they forgot to include the chutneys, and the pakoras were cold. Major issues.... the Afghan chicken kebab was under seasoned and rubbery almost as if it had been steamed or boiled instead of grilled, the butter chicken instead of being prepared with fresh chicken obviously used "recycled" shredded tandoori chicken (I'm guessing it was left over from the lunch buffet). FYI tandoori chicken should not be reused in different Indian chicken dishes, not the same flavor profile at all... never mind the rice had no flavor and there were no side dishes.... very disappointing and overpriced for what you get. read more

My review is solely for take-out. I live in the area and I have been waiting for this place to open in order to try it out... my friend got me on Indian food this summer and I've been hoping something closer to my house would open up... I finally saw they were open, so one night on my way home from coacing I ordered online with the YelpEat24 ordering system. I arrived to a warm greeting and was told it would be a few more minutes [I was early, so I didn't mind]. While waiting the host offered me a taste of this dessert that the chef had made that day. I don't remember the name but oh my it was AMAZING. It was like a mix between fudge and a shortbread cookie, but sweeter. I wish I remembered so I could order it next time I go! Anyways I ordered the chicken tikka masala... first off.. the portions were huge and secondly it tasted delicious. Just as I had hoped. The ordering system allowed for a big range of how spicy you would like it. I wasn't sure, so I played it safe this time and went in the middle... a good amount of spice, but being a lover of spiciness I'll probably try hotter next time. The garlic naan was also amazing... Godavari already gained major points with me before I even stepped foot inside with it's catchy name. I managed to write a song about it as soon as I drove by the sign, realizing that a new Indian restaurant had come to town. I was THAT excited. I placed my first order online yesterday. They were having trouble with the system and I had to wait a bit, but the gentleman working the counter apologized over and over. The place was FULL on a Monday night! It was unreal how busy it was. Once I got home I realized that they had forgot to pack the naan. I gave them a call and they drove it over! I couldn't believe it! I had already finished dinner by the time it arrived (once I smelled the food I couldn't stop myself!) so I saved it for lunch today. Just as good today....mmmm Indian food coma... The food is amazing! I have tried MANY Indian restaurants and this one really blew the local competition out of the water. Everything was so excellently spiced. We got the Malia Kofta (creamy and delicious), Palak Paneer (great spinach and fenugreek flavors with just enough paneer), Chicken Tikki Masala (spicy and flavorful), Manchurian Gobi (perfectly cooked) and Veggie Samosas (just the right size for an appetizer) and Garlic Naan (freshly made). The buffet used to be good. But what we had today seemed like a not so great spread. It is not about the spread of the item, but the taste and quality. Not sure what kind of oil was used, we felt sick after eating the buffet today. Also it seems the buffet prices are going up every other time. The food was very flavorful, and we enjoyed it very much. However we spent over 40 minutes waiting for just appetizers and drinks! Does it really take 40 minutes to bring us drinks? The wait was not the problem - there were less than 8 parties there. They definetly forgot about our order, and made up excuses about why they were late. I love Indian food and my friend suggested we try this fairly new restaurant in Cumberland. This is some of the most delicious food we have ever had in an Indian restaurant. They bring these crispy, light fennel, lentil Chios to the table with two sauces. You know when food is great when it cab stand on its own flavors without anything else. The same can be said of the Poor I Masala bread. Warm and wonderful. Comfort food on a raw rainy day such as today. It is served with what I will describe as a yummy vegetable stew. It doesn't stop there. Try the Chicken Manchurian. Little bites of tender chicken almost caramelized in sauce. And the Samosas stuffed with wonderful filling. My friend had the Special Shrimp curry. He asked for the heat and they delivered. I'll have to get back to you about the Fish Curry because I got it to go. I was already full. As for the decor it is warm, relaxing and inviting. You can leave your wet umbrellas by the door and hang your coats. The staff is friendly and eager to please. From the take out/pick up side I think it's a great Indian spot. I work right across so maybe I'm a little biased due to me eating here for lunch. Have had their pick up service plenty of times for appetizers and their smoothies (which are phenomenal), as for eat in the most I've done is grab from their buffet and take it to go. I like Godavari branches and the food they offer, but here in the Cumberland branch, RI it really sucks- I placed an order chicken biryani and some other appetizer for delivery, they mixed the rice from mutton biryani. The biryani I got has both chicken and mutton, that was so disgusting. I don't even like the smell of mutton then imagine how it feels like eating that biryani. As we all know that is not even fresh but forget about the fresh, mixing the rice from mutton biryani is incredible, The taste is bad They are just going out of the standards. If you're going to be a restaurant that has takeout and lets people deliver for you, you may want to have more than three people on staff. For a restaurant of this size to have three people working on a Friday night is just amateur at best. There is absolutely no reason to wait an hour for one take out order. I went for dinner a little after they opened. The space is huge, and I think they do a bigger business for lunch and catering. It's a big space that has some nice Indian art but really distracting color changing LED lights everywhere. The waiter was very nice, but we were one of only two parties in the restaurant and we still waited for 40 minutes to get our entree. We got samosas to start, after about 20 minutes. The food was good, (Tika masala and tandori chicken) but each entree came out at a different time so My daughter and I had almost finished before my husband even got his. My go to at Indian restaurants is lamb korma, and it wasn't on the menu, so I was unsure what to order. The waiter asked me whether or not I ate meat and my hotness tolerance on a scale from 1-10, I replied 6, clarifying that vindaloo is too hot for me, and he suggested a chicken dish. I forgot what it was called now, but it was very good. I would recommend this restaurant, and make sure to ask for help from the waiter if the menu seems foreign. read more

Dosas were great! Sambhar could be a little thinner/tastier (more tang from tamarind, perhaps), but that may be personal preference. The menu is varied and extensive. The food is great and spicy. Go for the food! However , the service was terrible. We were served a Luke warm pitcher of water and when we asked for ice , we were given one half cup of ice for the table. The time it took for our orders to arrive was slow and varied. Until recently, I wasn't aware there was a Godavari in RI. I was excited to see what it had to offer, especially since I usually travel to Framingham and Woburn to get my fix. My boyfriend and I decided to dine in on a Sunday evening. We ordered sambhar, idly, vada, a paneer curry and a fish curry (don't remember the specific names).
