This was fried portobello mushrooms and sauces on the side it was very good. I also had the California roll and the dynamite roll.I was not a fan of the California roll as it was actually fried I probably should've asked before I got the crunchy California roll. But the dynamite roll was just that dynamite! The service was really good although I will say our food was very slow to come out but I guess when things are made fresh this is the sacrifice. Had lunch here on a Sunday and went with the fish and chips. It was really tasty! The fish was two large pieces of battered fish on top of steak cut fries. The fries were really good! Perfectly cooked, crispy on the outside and soft inside. The fish was flaky and delicate inside and had a nice ratio of breading. The breading was a little bit soggy in some parts after a few minutes but it didn't bother me too much. It was served with a nice tartar sauce, ketchup and some tomatoes. I checked in on yelp when I arrived and was offered a free dessert coupon which we used. The dessert was a cheesecake that was very rich but was a nice ending to the meal. They charge fine dining prices for just average fare they put in fancy plates. The food is alright, the portion sizes could be bigger for for the price. Menu is all over the place and they don't seem to specialize in anything specific. I don't recommend going here just for cocktails. Thought we could drop in for some cocktails and pupus but they save all seating for food reservations. You'll be seated at the cramped and uncomfortable bar if there's room, and charged high prices for cocktails that aren't all that different from what you can get at CPK or some other chain. Bartenders treat you like they don't want to be there. Lighting and spacing of tables is weird, doesn't help their atmosphere. Bar is smack in the middle of their dining area, like a sad island. Even when you make a reservation to dine in you're seated in uncomfortable basic metal chairs and tables and the bright fluorescent lights and atmosphere is just off-putting. Overall unimpressed and would not go back, won't spend fine dining prices at a place that doesn't put effort into being fine dining. read more

Located where Macy's used to be, facing the parking lot, Goen looks like a popular restaurant. Seated promptly upon arrival, the staff were cordial. The restaurant was already crowded when we arrived with more and more people coming as the evening worn on. Hardly any locals present. We started our evening with beets and the fry basket. The beets were warm, served with toast. Tasty. The fry basket was portobello mushroom sticks in a batter and deep fried and served piping hot with two dipping sauces. While they were tasty, the fries were too oily. Both sauces were delicious. Our entrees were filet mignon, medium rare steak already sliced up, served tower-style on top of red potatoes and vegetables. Pretty but lacked any flavor. I had to request salt and pepper and shoyu to add to the steak. The misoyaki butterfish was very tasty and a huge chunk of fish, served on choi sum (?) with white rice with furikake sprinkled on top. For dessert, we took advantage of our FREE chocolate cake compliments of Yelp, but our server said it would come sans the ice cream. What? We can't have a tiny scoop of ice cream with this complimentary cake? Really? We also ordered the butter mochi that came ala mode. It was presented very prettily, but the mochi was hard, as if it were a few days old. It was difficult to eat. Overall a pleasant experience and good service, but the food was disappointing. Place is modern and open space concept. Love the outdoor area but be careful of insects diving into them. Drink: Lemon drop was made with real lemon juice and tasted refreshing. Good amount of alcohol. Loved it. Got a couple rounds. All my friends were raving about their drinks. Food: The deep fried mushroom app was delicious. Crispy and nice contrast in texture between crunch and meatiness of the portobello. Main course I had the main catch; the broth it came with was seasoned and had a rich taste but the fish itself was pretty bland. Dish came with a side of rice. Halo halo dessert was amazing. Casual, contemporary, and unpretentious. Enter Goen in Kailua. Located in what used to be Macys, Goen is located just beneath UFC Gym. I like the high ceilings and the casual open air concept that Chef Roy Yamamoto envisioned for his new restaurant. The eight of us were here to celebrate a dear friend's birthday one Friday night which gave me the opportunity to check this place out. And fortunately for me, other Yelpers had already stated the specific location in their reviews so I was able to easily locate the restaurant. We were seated toward the back of the restaurant where four of us had our backs up against the wall where the kitchen can be seen through the glass window. Some of the niele (nosey) ones took a peek and were wowed by a huge slab of salmon that they saw. Hahaha :D Not too long after we got seated, our servers brought over plates of The Fry Basket and Herb Gnocchi compliments of Roz M.'s hubby, Ben. What a sweet gesture!! The Fry Basket has got mushroom fries with truffle aioli and bell pepper pesto dipping sauces and the Herb Gnocchi had a tasty blend of herbs and veggies in it. Both were yummy, but the mushroom fries were where the friggen action was at. So good! The menu apparently changes from time to time because I didn't see the Crab Salad that I want to try. Seasonal changes perhaps? So I ended up getting the Opakapaka (pink snapper) with Soba. I thought that the whole dish was good, but I didn't think it was great. I thought that the fish was a little boring and that somehow, it was lacking in flavor. Although I am not a fan of desserts, I did try a spoonful of Halo Halo and thought that it was refreshing and good. So if you're into stuff like that, I think you'd like it. This is a Roy Yamaguchi restaurant and definitely lived up to his inventive menu. On the Kailua side, this place adds a bit of class to the strip mall with both indoor and outdoor seating. However, there was no escaping the chickens, birds and roosters... they frequently flew inside the restaurant and flew in seating and tables alike. Despite that inconvenience... the food was great! I have food envy, so I always suggest family style eating wherever I go. This is the best way to sample a lot of dishes. I immediately ordered the Salmon Ochazuke. It was good, but because I loved The Pineapple Room's version by Alan Wong, I compared the two and felt that it fell short. The salmon wasn't as moist and the flavor was more on the bland side. Everything else was so yummy though! I especially liked the fried mushrooms and the Burrata. Both had great spreads with lots of taste. Since we were celebrating a birthday, we got the halo halo which was so refreshing! Upon check-in, we got a free matcha cheesecake... it was not great at all. The crust could've been so much better to blend with the rich cheesy taste... but it was free... oh wells. I ordered an Iced tea... a lot of times I base a review on their REA alone. Our server was great but the food was not good. Everything we ordered was SPICY to the point of not being enjoyable. I'm not sure if it was from the sauce on top but it was not good. The menu said my sushi had avocado mixed in with the crab meat, but you couldn't even see or taste it. My son had the kids meal and he loved the quesadilla but the entree was also lacking. He got the pasta with butter and parm cheese. The pasta had more water in the bowl than butter. I took them home and added seasoning butter and parm and he ate that. Came here for my birthday on a Wednesday night. Parking is super easy- huge lot including two story parking garage. Our server and buss person was very sweet and helpful. Checked on us frequently. I ordered the Sunrise Ruby ($13), which has a sour taste at first, and then the alcohol kicks in. My friend got the lychee martini, and that drink was strong as well. The food was pretty good. I got the Fresh Market Catch ($23). The fish was tender, but the tomato base tasted more like thick tomato soup, so it didn't really match. I'm not sure if it was the combination of drinks and food that was kind of a weird mixture. I love living on the Windward side. I love our charming town vibe, being surrounded by the Ko'olaus, and that it's just a quick 20-30 minute zip down the most beautiful highways known to man to get to town. And while I don't want that to change by way of over-development, I do feel that this restaurant filled a gap that we've been missing on our side: a high quality, yet casual neighborhood restaurant with a bar that can be taken seriously. We don't need 10 of them, we just need a small few! Long story short, its got it GOEN on. The vibe is casual chic, with an expansive lanai that makes for an enjoyable al fresco dinner in the evening. Every staff member we encountered was friendly, hospitable, and with a smile on their face, which makes for a signature aloha experience. The food did not disappoint, either. A few highlights from our first meal here: Mushroom Fries - bell pepper pesto was a light,tasty, and refreshing alternative to the old heavy sauce standbys we're all used to. I also enjoyed the use of mushrooms as the "fries" - super crisp and meaty. Kampachi - YES. So fresh, clean, and full of flavor without overpowering or taking away from the taste of the fish. Just. Get. It. Fettucine - Ali'i mushrooms, kale, dashi cream, ikura. Not overly heavy at all, and just the right serving size. The kale came out lightly fried, and they were generous with the mushrooms. This dish was savory and delicious. As for drinks I had the Howzit...Goen - with Ko Hana Rum. It came garnished with lime and a flower. Beautifully balanced and boozy - just how I like it! I also had the Pineapple Ale to follow; light and without any "beery" aftertaste. As a self-professed cocktail snob, I look forward to trying out the rest of the drink menu; even more reason to come back again and again! Next time I hope to try the Pho and sushi rolls which I was eyeing on the menu. I didn't want to break the bank on the first visit, hence the need to pace myself even thought I wanted to order everything, haha! This is a great place for a date spot, a girls night out, and business meetings. They have an upstairs area that looks like seating for private parties, too. And although I am sure they are family-friendly because it's in Kailua, I feel like the menu and ambiance offered here should be approached as a place for adults to be adults, reserved for time away from the kids. This welcome addition to Kailua area is a nice place with a welcoming ambience. Nice open space, wide comfortable seating, friendly service. Like all other second tier Roy's restaurants (I.e. Eating House), come for the ambience not for the food. The food is not bad, it's just pretty mediocre spins on local inspired dishes. The food is never bad, but never great and inspired either. High end comfort food at best. But, on the other hand, as you dish out $18 for a very mediocre bowl of Pho, you also get very good service, a nice place to hang out, and a full cocktail and wine selection. We went with a larger group, got to sample a variety of dishes, from appetizers to sushi to main courses. In general, the pupus were way better than the mains. For appetizers we had the mushroom fries, beet salad, chicken bao, and pork belly. All four were pretty tasty. For mains - We had the Goen Noodles (basically chicken pho), the Cha Soba, Chicken Rice, and all three were pretty bland. The meats were but dry and under seasoned, the noodles and rice but over cooked. We actually had to send back the beef on the Cha Soba because it was not only a terrible cut of beef full of gristle, it was also pretty much served to us raw. The sushi was good but portions were tiny - a $15 roll means a tiny 6 piece maki portion. The service was fantastic though. Our server was attentive and friendly. Ok, second time in. This time for lunch. I had the burger because I had been wanting to try it. It was perfectly cooked. Not too thick and not to thin. Great flavor. Bun was good too. Burger had a nice topping of bacon, sauce, brie cheese and greens. They all complemented the burger well and did not over dominate the flavor of the meat itself. The burger patty itself was delicious the way it was but the added toppings were tasteful and mild and really just set this burger off. One of the best burgers I have had in awhile. My wife got the Fresh Catch sandwich and wow was the fish delicious. It was juicy, tender and very large. Seasoned well and topped off with a nice bun and coleslaw. Huge sandwich. It was Served with a nice side salad. We also had the spicy tuna roll again as an appetizer. This time we brought the kids and they split a kids meal. I was a little setback by the $15 price for a kid's meal at first but it does come with a cheese quesadilla fruit and some veggies to start a main course and then a cupcake for dessert. So it is a bit more expensive but the kids are getting more of a three-course meal in it keeps them entertained throughout the meal. My last comment for this trip was that the coffee was very good. I wasn't expecting much out of it but it had a really nice fresh ground flavor to it and I had several cups. Rumor has it that they may be offering a brunch or breakfast menu at least on the weekends. Ahhh yes. Finally a night out at a restaurant with some good friends. With my mask in tow we headed to Kailua to eat at Goen Dining + Bar for our first time. We've wanted to come for awhile, but since the global pandemic those foodie hopes and dreams have been held at bay. . . . Checking in was easy. Name, handed us a clipboard to fill out a slip with name and address. Done. . . . We were seated in a booth - it was lovey. My only criticism is that it is my firm belief that booths should have "scootable" seats. The kind of seat where you can slide in. The material on this was tacky, so as you attempted to slide in, you also took a portion of the seat with you. . . . We didn't wait long for water and our waiter to take our drink order. I ordered a "Howzit...Goen?!" Cute name. Such a tasty drink! Made with tequila, strawberry, Lilikoi, and the part that makes the drink sing - a house made hawaiian chili syrup. The syrup itself was a nice balance to the fruity flavors, with a subtle warm kick that was splendid! . . . Appetizers: First off the crispy Brussels and cauliflower, fairly standard preparation and a creamy za'atar. The added crunch from pepitas was a welcomed textural contract. Smoked salmon spread and focaccia was so so good. Creamy, salty, tasty salmon spread on the toasty focaccia felt like a luxurious tangle of flavors in my mouth. And finally the fry basket is a heaping of Portobello Mushroom Fries with herb cream cheese was deliciously crispy on the outside but still retained a juicy umami bite from the 'shroom itself. Must get! . . . I ordered the Mango and Chipotle BBQ Pork Ribs. It was okay. Not the greatest. The flavor was good but my palette was confused by the Yuzu Kosho Cole Slaw. It seemed to me that it was an attempt to fuse traditional cole slaw with asian flavors - needs work. . . . And of course ALL the dessert! Butter Mochi - served warm with a dusting of powered sugar and candied pecans. Yuzu lemon bar cheesecake, this is how Yuzu should be served! Deliciously creamy with the butter macadamia nut shortbread crumble. Finally, halo halo - spoke to my inner Filipino fat kid, this has a panna cotta at the bottom to mimic what would be a flan on top - fantastic! . . . The overall experience was decent, aside from the entree the food lived up to it's popularity in the foodie community. The service was excellent and quick. Decided to check this place out when we saw it after going to Maui brewing. Not happy with drinks or food. I ordered the kooaula sour and my girl ordered a lychee drink with vodka in it. Drinks took awhile to get to us. No biggie. We ordered the spicy tuna roll as an appetizer and rosemary chicken for me and my Italian girlfriend ordered the pumpkin gnocchi. The tuna roll was great. Only draw back is, when you are at a nice restaurant, they shouldn't give you your soy sauce in a plastic to go container. But covid might be at fault for that. The food came shortly after but I was given the fish and chips......I told the server I ordered the chicken and she said "you sure did". We got takeout from Goen during Covid. We got a few dinner plates as well as shishito appetizer, waffle fries and the sushi/sashimi box. LOVE the waffle fries - I will keep going back for those alone! The sushi/sashimi box was okay. I don't really eat that much raw fish in sitting though, so it wasn't really my favorite. Love the food ana atmosphere! Celebrated our wedding rehearsal here and the service and food were perfect! Ambiance is super cute and open air. The waitress was the best and super flexible! The food was of course just fabulous. We had a bunch of starters including the burrata (omg creamy), sashimi platter, mini squid (definitely unique and tasty), brussel sprouts, and dumplings. I personally love miso butterfish and so I ordered that and it was melt in your mouth delicious. I shared and everyone said he'd never had anything like it and it was amazing. The pork belly and unagi were also tasty. The sake flight was fun for drinks and we enjoyed a all three deserts! I'm not a desert person but ppl seemed to enjoy them! read more

This new restaurant is a branch off of Roy's, located in the old Macy's in Kailua. I made an open table reservation for 4 at 8:45 because it was the only opening and wasn't seated until 20 mins later because they didn't have napkins or the table set yet... Our server was really friendly and polite. She let us try the different wines before ordering a class, but unfortunately all the red wines were not good, except the Pinot. I wouldn't recommend the Syrah or Cabernet, and those are usually my go to. As for the food, I was eager to try the portabella mushroom fries because hawaii doesn't have them at many restaurants. It was pretty disappointing, for $10 you get 5 pieces of portabella mushrooms and they were small and there wasn't much flavor except when you dipped it in the aioli sauce. My friends got there bao bun which she enjoyed but not much meat in it. The Kailua roll was interesting because there was chick peas on top! Then the gnocchi was a favorite with my friends, you can get an entree order instead of appetizer if you ask. I prefer the fettuccine which had kale, ikura and a variety of mushrooms; I loved the pasta!! Very creamy and tasty, I would order again! Overall, food was not bad, I would come back to try the other dishes. I give 4 stars because we waited a long time to get seated and I made a reservation, but the service was extremely friendly. Not the best red wine either, but I'll get a wine next time. read more
