Chef Roy Yamahuchi has a winner with this pan-Asian/American restaurant. Its amazing, especially for a nice date in the downtown Kailua area of Oahu, though a little pricey (but worth it). From the spicy edamame appetizer to their filet minon steak, sushi, pasta, or fresh fish main courses like the butterfish and sea bass to name a few things I tried. The presentation is beautiful and the cocktails are creative and fun!! This is a hip place to go. They even have live music certain days of the week. I love going back to where I was born and the Kailua neighborhood where I grew up and visit this restaurant, which I just did for a second time cause it was so special the first time I visited Goen back in 2021.

Visited Goen to meet a friend and had a great experience. The space is open, big, and really inviting. A nice place to hang out and catch up. We ordered the beef with mashed potatoes, some sushi, and the fish and chips. Everything tasted good and came out nicely prepared. We also had a few drinks, and the overall vibe was relaxed and comfortable. There's parking available, and we didn't have to wait for a table, which made it even better. Solid spot for a casual meal, drinks, and good conversation. Would return.

one word service service service !!! they are constantly filling our water , asking how the food is, very attentive and it makes you feel like you're their priority. we went during happy hour on friday 15 minutes before it was done (happy hour ends at 5:30) we like to sit inside its next to the nice staircase. the food was good, cali bites had good flavor but not too much filling. i would have liked a little more especially for $10/plate when there's only 4 pieces per plate, but none the less it was good. we'll return. especially for the ambiance of the staircase

Usually, this restaurant is so good and consistent. But my last visit a few months ago was a little disappointing. Service was great as usual. But the food wasn't as good as it used to be. The burrata was pretty hard all the way through. The stracciatella wasn't as creamy or prominent as it used to be. It was also kind of tasteless. The Brussels and cauliflower were a little over done and kind of salty. The fry basket was good as usual, though. And the drinks were fine. we also enjoyed our beet salad. hopefully next visit, everything will be back to its usual amazing quality

Convenient nice-casual spot in the town center in Kailua. I came with one other person at the tail end of happy hour. The happy hour menu is limited but we got the capture and garlic parm fries to share. Both were good. For our mains we got the mushroom Japanese spaghetti and the miso butter fish. The spaghetti was rich and flavorful. The miso butter fish was cooked perfectly but honestly everything the dish came with was distracting and didn't pair well with the fish. Service was attentive and friendly, and they even had live music.

Dined here on Christmas Day with a reservation, and despite the restaurant being completely packed (understandable for the holiday), everything went smoothly and felt genuinely festive. The ambiance was spot-on for the holiday--soft Christmas music playing in the background created that warm, joyful vibe without being overpowering. The open floor plan is really inviting: spacious, bright, and easy to move around, which made the full house feel lively rather than cramped. It's a great layout that lets you feel the energy of the room while still having an intimate table experience. We arrived right on time, were warmly greeted at the hostess stand, and only waited about 5 minutes to be seated--apparently the previous party was still finishing up at our table. No big deal at all. Every single staff member we encountered was friendly, upbeat, and made a point to wish us a Merry Christmas. It really added to the holiday spirit. Service was well-paced: our appetizers arrived together, and the mains came about 15 minutes later--perfect timing. Food highlights: - **Caesar salad**: Fresh, crisp romaine and a delicious, well-balanced dressing. Exactly what you want in a Caesar. - **Brussels sprouts & cauliflower appetizer**: Outstanding. Perfectly roasted, great seasoning, and super tasty--easily one of the best veggie apps I've had. - **Braised short rib**: Tender doesn't even begin to describe it--the meat literally fell apart with a fork. I ordered it over mashed potatoes (instead of the polenta option) and highly recommend that swap; the creamy potatoes were the ideal pairing. - **Mango sorbet** for dessert: Light, refreshing, and exactly as advertised--bright mango flavor. Paired it with a black coffee, and I was pleasantly surprised by how excellent the coffee was. Rich, smooth, no bitterness--some of the best restaurant coffee I've had in a while. Overall, a wonderful Christmas dinner experience. The team clearly put in extra effort on a busy holiday, and it showed. Highly recommend this spot, especially if you're looking for a place that's open and delivers on Christmas Day. We'll definitely be back!

I had high hopes for this restaurant, but unfortunately, it didn't live up to the expectations. The ambiance wasn't anything special and the service was okay -- nothing special, but not terrible either. However, the real letdown was the food. The portions were noticeably small, especially considering the high prices. I wouldn't mind paying more for great quality and good service, but sadly that wasn't the case here. My dish arrived cold, and while the waiter did replace it, there was no apology or offer to make up for the inconvenience -- not even a complimentary dessert or discount. I still ended up paying full price for a subpar experience. Overall, it felt like the restaurant is more focused on appearances than on genuinely satisfying its customers. ONE and DONE.

Wow fresh so fresh. I don't eat fish but I enjoy sushi. And normally I don't eat sashimi but I went for it! We also had the California Dragon Roll & Spicy Tuna Roll. This is my friend's favorite spot so of course they took me. I loved it all! The s'more was next level good so save room for dessert! Service was excellent- super nice servers. Food 5 stars! We ate outside & it was such a great night for it. 5 stars & I want to come back! My 1st trip & it won't be my last.

I have mixed emotions about this place. We were looking for a new place and it had live music that created a peaceful atmosphere. Food: I had the Crispy Skin Smoked Salmon, my partner had Braised Beef Short Ribs. We paired it with a bottle (30% off) of a French Bordeaux. When the food arrived, I noted that the Salmon was raw in the center and I found it un-eatable. It was returned to the kitchen and I received a new plate ( guessing from the manager?). My partner experienced some swallowing issues and it seems her food was stuck in her esophagus that she described as it felt like a stone in her stomach. She ended up going to the bathroom and vomiting. The wine was excellent, the music really made the atmosphere. But the overall experience left us with not wanting to return. I'm a big fan of Roy Yamaguchi, and this is his place. I've never had issues with his establishment in Waikiki and unfortunately our first and last visit to this establishment. The service itself was excellent, our food issues were addressed quickly. This is why I have mixed feelings. When you have the perception of a negative/stressful experience it's hard to want to come back. I'm just being honest and you should go and have your own opinion about the food and atmosphere. At the end of the day, it was a series of events that made us not want to return. I don't blame the food, staff, etc.

Been here a few times and they never disappoint. Fast and friendly service with delicious food. There's ample tables and a decent sized bar you can also be seated at. Every dish has been fresh and flavorful. Some standouts I'd recommend are the fry basket (portobello fries), beer battered fish & chips, braised beef short ribs, brussel sprouts & cauliflower, and all the desserts! It's an open air restaurant with a casual layout. Parking can get crazy on Thursdays when the parking lot becomes a farmers market. Also always a good idea to make a reservation as any good restaurant is consistently busy.

It is a bit pricey, but it's also really good. Staff was kind and attentive and gave great recommendations as to their favs on the menu which is always welcome. Dishes came out quick and in order. We started with the fry basket which comes with herb cream cheese dip. The mushrooms were crispy and flavorful (also quite filling) and the dip was fantastic, soft and creamy with bright herbs to tease the palate. We followed this up with a healthy beet salad. Huge chunks of delicious earthy beets, one small disc of toasted goat cheese and a nice vinaigrette (could have used more dressing and goat cheese), but overall a nice healthful edition to the meal. For the entrees we had the arrabbiata pasta with burrata; just a whisper of spice but a nice sauce covering all the noods and a giant ball of cool burrata. I'd order this again and even though I thought I was full after the fry basket and salad, I still ate all of the pasta. Truffle gnocchi with shrimp and crispy calamari was rich and cheesy with a good truffle flavor. Dinner concluded with a deconstructed smore which was so good. Again, I thought I was full until I started eating the chocolate, then I mixed in a bit of the toasted marshmallow and couldn't stop eating it. It could have used a bit more graham cracker crumble (looks like a nice amount in the pic, but taste was muted by the chocolate). The space is nice and bright and you don't feel crammed in as there is plenty of space between tables.

Plenty of open tables out front near the sun and breeze but we were told we had to sit in the back by the wall. After that, everything was exceptional. This newly opened restaurant from Roy's has excellent Pan-Asian food and on-point cocktails that make it Kailua's new hot spot. Appetizers were delicious -- recommend the mushroom fries! The fresh fish sandwiches with garlic aioli were exceptionally delicious. The poke was delicious (always an important dish to get right here in Hawai'i). The portions are reasonable and the flavors are delicious. Despite being open less than a week, it is already very popular but the wait times were minimal and the food and drinks were well worth it! I've been on a birria taco kick lately and saw in an email that Goen is offering theirs on Taco Tuesdays. At $60 for 8 birria tacos and 4 black bean quesadillas, I never thought I would spend that much. Then, I received the Hawaii Restaurant Card and wanted to indulge a bit while supporting local business. Pre-ordered and paid on Dec 9 and eagerly waited 6 days until Dec 15 Taco Tuesday. This was for takeout. Parked in the lot and walked up to the entrance stand. I was quickly greeted by two workers who were very friendly and helpful. Being the last day to use the Restaurant Card, I knew the balance on it was $14.30 so I asked the worker if I could order something inexpensive like a soda so I can tip the remainder to them. She suggested a mango lemonade which was nice and refreshing. Grabbed my order and drove home. It smelled really good and was excited to dig in. Whoa. The birria tacos were scantily filled and very dry. Looked absolutely nothing like their social media photos. The quesadillas were even worse! I was sorely disappointed! I guess I was fortunate that I didn't pay out of my own pocket, but I sure wouldn't want anyone else to waste SIXTY DOLLARS on this! I had such high hopes! This place is fantastic! Well, minus the hostess who could stand to learn a little kindness. Otherwise, the waitress was so kind, the ambiance was great considering it's in a parking lot, and lastly and most important, the food was outstanding! Oh, and the drinks are pretty good too. I was excited to try this place because I have seen some great food pictures from my friends... but I was thoroughly disappointed when I went there for my birthday this past weekend... Inside of the restaurant had all their fluorescent lights on and looked like they were getting ready to close... no ambience what so ever. The food came pretty quickly and the waitress was very attentive (1star for speed)... since there was no one else there... Check the menu before you go down, because the menu is VERY limited. The food is decent (1 star food food), but again very limited menu... I went for my birthday dinner and usually restaurants would give a free dessert... well I got the saddest little bar of chocolate with a candle... no "Happy Birthday" no writing... just a single candle... what a way to make you feel special on your birthday... lol We had to order the dessert... we ordered all 3 that were on the menu... since there were 7 of us... When you are spending over $500 for dinner... you expect certain things... which I thought was a little lacking that night... read more

Got the "Feel Good Friday" to go box and we were majorly impressed. Feeds four, with a six pack of Japanese beer assortments, all for $72 with tax. Recent visit to Goen was a bit disappointing. In a place surrounded by ocean why was my halibut fishy. I do recommend the Lycee Martini. Work is needed on the MaiTai. Nice setup for outdoor dining. read more

Visiting Kailua and not sure where to eat dinner? Stop scrolling, make reservations now, and go here. Not only is the food incredible, the service is also top notch. Jen was our server and she was one of the personable, friendly, fabulous people we have met on the island. She also helped us curate exactly what we wanted to eat! We got the Crispy Brussel Sprouts, Food A go-go Burrata, and Harvest Gnocchi - each item was incredible (esp the burrata). Also, our table was uneven and another employee just came by (not needing us to even ask) and fixed it! I swear these people are mind readers!!! Quick service, friendly staff, and amazing food. Passed by here looking for something light. Specifically looking for Ube. They had this Asian Fusion Halo Halo and it was AMAZING. IF HAWAII HAD A TASTE IT WOULD BE THIS!!! It's not your traditional halo halo. This had fresh fruits, baby mochis, and very tasty not too sweet ube. We also had mushroom fries and tuna roll. It was also good. But the halo halo. Yummm Oh. Last night for a great visit with the kids. GOEN did NOt let us down. From apps to dessert. It was a most pleasant evening. Never rushed. Always welcomed. Cocktails were well rounded for all in our party. I settled for the chicken that made it way around the table as a solid choice. Duck breast was a rave as well. Thanks GOEN. Did not have the set menu as advertised and just seemed liked an average restaurant next to a parking lot with Roy's name put on it. Service was not great-did not explain dishes and said we could not share a meal. Would not go back. read more

It was ok - expected more from a Roy Yamaguchi restaurant. The outdoor setting with lots of breezes is great. Service was slow after our appetizers. Sashimi set was good but for $35 expected the rolled temaki to be made with fish not filled with what looked like cooked tuna fish with mayo. Sashimi slices were ok. The gazpacho was sweet not what I expected. My friend said the pork ribs were good but not enough to go back. read more

We have been to GOEN a number of times before and always enjoyed it. Their signature cocktails and halo halo dessert are particularly delicious. But we were incredibly impressed with their customer service on Valentine's Day when we called to see if they had a last-minute table for dinner (our reservation at another restaurant was canceled due to rain closing the outside tables). The hostess (Ari?) initially said they didn't have room, but she called us back unprompted about 10 minutes later after arranging to get us an end of the evening spot. What a fantastic spot forca Roys affiliated restaurant. The menu is very interesting in the fusion options thatyou have. The drinks are something else. The deserts again a fusion of so many cultures and brings it all together just right. The location is really nice and the ambiance works well. Chastity took our call on a very busy Friday and managed to squeeze us in just before the fully booked dinner rush. As luck would have it Chastity was also our server and had so many great recommendations from drinks, to appetizers, main course to desert. Excellent and just downright welcoming service. I had dinner here for my birthday and enjoyed everything I ate. The customer service was excellent and the atmosphere was nice. I don't make it out to Kailua often, so I wanted to try a few things off the menu. Here's the list: burrata cheese, fry basket (my FA-VOR-RITE!), avocado king roll, Sashimi Moriawase, s'mores. Everything was good but honestly, if you don't order the fry basket when you go are you even living your best life?! It's Portobello mushroom fried goodness with a side of herb cream cheese. Obviously, if you don't like mushrooms or you're allergic, don't get it. But if you're not, you'll regret it. read more

I will strongly suggest making reservations. I had 12n on a Friday when they opened and I stood in a line for 15 minutes to check in. Covid rules I suppose you have to account for that but people ahead of me were being turned away to come back in two hours with no reservations. That's nuts. Food was quick and tasty. read more

Love coming here to Goen! I have even come twice in one week. Thats how yummy it is. I have never seen it crowded which works in our favor because we are always seated right away. I love that its on the Windward side because its convenient for us vs. driving into Waikiki to enjoy Roy's. In my opinion the butterfish taste the same as Roy's but the portion here seem bigger! What a win win situation for us. Everything we've tried so far was delicious. Our favorites are the blackened ahi, Teriyaki Salmon, Fried mushrooms, Butterfish and sushi rolls. The adult portion salmon was the same size as the keiki salmon so the server did offer us a complementary dessert since I did make a comment about it being the same size. I did think the portion was rather big for a keiki plate but my daughter had no problem eating it all. If you do visit on a Thursday night when they have the Kailua Farmers Market they sell $1 chicken skewers and $2 filet skewers which were super yummy, especially for the price. It is cooked on a little hibachi grill at the back entrance so its fresh off the grill after ordering. I do wish they had the Roy's chocolate cake dessert (the one that takes 20 minutes to cook) but every time we've gone its been something different. I guess the desserts are always changing but I thought that was something signature to all of Roys restaurants. Definitely a must try if you're in Kailua looking for someplace to eat without a wait. read more

Wow! The sandwiches we had was amazing! Super great place to eat! The mushroom fries!!!!! My favorite! Dessert also great! The service was super slow and that's why I gave it 4 stars instead of 5. My friend told it was the same for her when she came a few months back. If you only have an hour lunch or dinner break, don't go. You won't make it back to work in time. I think I'll stick to dinner at Goen. I went because I really wanted to try the pancakes. They pancakes are no longer on the menu. The waitress explained to us that they take like an hour to make because they are so labor intensive. I decided to order the waffle since I wanted something breakfasty. The waffle tasted good however they were room temperature. After they served me they offered me the honey butter. I think it tasted good but it was hard to tell because the butter was not soft and spreadable and the waffles were not hot/warm. The people behind us also got the waffles and theirs looked different (whipped cream on top vs on the side)I also ordered a side of bacon which wasn't on the menu. It was delicious and cooked just how I ordered it. My friend ordered the salmon she said it was ok but not a lot of flavor which she said she should have expected because of how it is prepared. The mimosa however was good but didn't realize it was only on special Sundays. I probably would not have ordered it if I knew it was $11 vs $5. Overall I wanted to try the brunch which I would said is much more of a lunch. I would try it again but not for the breakfast food maybe for the lunch parts of the menu. read more

Ramen, according to the server, was the most popular thing on the menu, so how likely could it get messed up? Tonkatsu: Rich, but lacked any salt or had very little. We requested some salt and that instantly made the ramen better. The noodles had enough salt to carry it, but the broth was not great. It tasted like the broth was watered down or reconstituted, however no seasoning was added to re-adjust the broth. Broth: Had little salt and lacked punch, umami, and was brown instead of white. Noodles: Had enough salt to taste good, but was slightly overcooked Pork: Extremely bland. Tasted like zero salt was added during cooking. Toppings: Greatly lacking in toppings Tsukemen: The Tsukemen had a lot of the same issues. Now being a dipping ramen, the broth should be even richer and more flavorful than any normal ramen. Tsukemen -- no matter where you have it in Japan, should be richer and saltier than most broths, but the broth here was severely lacking. For $26 a bowl this was worse than your DIY frozen ramen packs. Now I'm not asking for Japan-level of ramen mastery here, this is after all, just a tourist spot -- but if your Tonkatsu is the best selling item, you have to step it up. Our server did mention that some people complained about the amount of salt in ramen, so they adjusted it. But dare I say, instead of diluting the normal salt/seasoning amount for everyone, couldn't you just add a separate, flavor-light version for people inexperienced with ramen, instead of diluting the original for everyone else? If you're reading this Mr. Morimoto, I would highly encourage you to fly here and order the ramen. I think you and I would share the same opinions. P.S. Prior to being seated, our host asked us if this was acceptable, I immediately said, "No." We expected a table that we could all comfortably sit around in an easily accessible spot (as we had always had previously). The only option offered was to go downstairs and sit outside where we were told it was expected to rain. For the sake of salvaging our celebration, I acquiesced and we sat at the table offered. Since the servers could not walk behind four of us, plates, drinks, etc. were continually passed to those of us "trapped." While the food was excellent as always, the experience was far from it. I apologized to the family and assured them that we would not be coming back. As the months have passed since this disappointing experience, I have wrestled with whether to share this experience, fearing it would be a wasted effort. I decided to be hopeful that this message would not fall on deaf ears, but be accepted as valuable customer feedback.

Everything went well from order through delivery, and the Tube Bagel was fresh and delicious. They were out of something, but called to offer a choice of substitutions. I would share a photo but it's currently passing through my digestive system and not feeling very photogenic at the moment. Ignore that silly disgusting mess attached to my original review, but I will leave the photos up because I think they are instructive for management. Mission Accomplished Kono's Kailua! Not a criticism but I couldn't communicate with the Uber Eats driver through the website app. Whoever it was found me.

Same deals with thr kapolei location you order and find your own table and put number so they can find you when your order is up. Inside is airconditioned with around maybe 10 tables and chairs some seat 2 others eat 4 and they also have outside patio seating back and front. The parking can be challenging having maybe 10 -12 spots in their lot and some street parking . Their Menu is a bit more limited than their other location. Sandwiches.. pizza and other stuff oh and coffee. The only thing that wasmt as good as their kapolei location was they didnt have the thin crispy salty cravable fries they only had small bags of chips available The food is always good and the service was real good. The staff gave you an impression where they really valued their customers with greetings with a smile and happy goodbyes. As always a great experience with a great casual setting..fair pricing (nothing is considered "cheap" nowdays) ..good food and friendly staff.

You need to bus your own table when you're done, just place the used dishes, glasses and utensils in the labeled plastic tubs, not a big deal at all. Now, the food is the star. We order baba ganoush with pita, super gyro with zucchini fries, and a soup and salad combo. The baba ganoush was so delicious, and the pita was warm and soft. The super gyro has so much yummy meat in it that the pita can hardly hold them, and the zucchini fries were crispy and not oily. It also comes with a couple really good tzatziki sauces. My wife really enjoyed the avgolemono (lemon and chicken) soup and greek salad. She was so pleased with the combo that she had to order an extra takeout combo for her friend to try. On top of all that, we finished our great meal with a baklava sundae; two fresh crispy baklava pastries with a scoop of vanilla ice cream drizzled with cinnamon and honey. This desert is a must order. The restaurant is mixed in with a lot of other restaurants and shops in a large strip mall, so it maybe easy to miss. We both ordered the calamari with fries and coleslaw. I usually don't order calamari; so, take this with a grain of salt--best ever calamari! Lol. It was seasoned perfectly and it was so tender. When we I usually eat calamari, it is rubbery. Only ika on sushi is usually this tender and moist in my very limited experience. Excellent! The staff was friendly too. I'll surely visit over and over.

We had a great dinner at Goen Dining + Bar in Kailua. The atmosphere was laid-back but still felt special and the staff was all very kind. We ordered the crispy Brussels and cauliflower, braised short rib, duck breast, and the s'mores dessert. Hands down, the Brussels and cauliflower stole the show. Super crispy, well-seasoned, and addictive... i could've eaten a whole bowl to myself. Definitely a must-order. The short rib was rich and flavorful, super tender, and comforting. The duck was okay, but it wasn't quite as tender as we expected. That said, the garlic bread it came with was fantastic! Warm, buttery, and probably the best surprise of the dish. We also tried the Mini Goen Halo, and it was so refreshing! Light, cold, and the perfect palate cleanser after the richness of the other dishes. We finished with the s'mores dessert, which was fun and indulgent and a must order! Overall, a really solid experience. Would come back just for the Brussels and that garlic bread! read more

I decided to try Goen Dining + Bar in Kailua after hearing so much about their happy hour and live music. I made a quick reservation online. I started with the crispy Brussels sprouts and cauliflower from the happy hour menu, which were delicious--crispy, flavorful, and perfectly seasoned. For drinks, I couldn't resist trying their famous lychee martini, which lived up to the hype with its refreshing and fruity taste. The staff was friendly and attentive, making sure everything was just right. The highlight of the evening was the live music. It added such a fun and relaxing energy to the experience. It was my first time to Goen and I will definitely be going again...even if have to drive to Kailua. I had a meeting out East so we decided to celebrate a birthday here. The food is very trendy and modern. Each dish has a different, unique twist to it. Definitely eat the fry basket and the Burrata if you are a cheese fan. Was a fan of the seared ahi salad as well. Light dressing, which was perfect. Halo halo dessert was good too. 4 stars because the avo toast wasn't the greatest. Our bread was burnt and there was so much avocado on it. Would be better if there was less avo, more egg, and more toppings. read more

I had an amazing experience at Goen and a huge part of that was thanks to Dylan! From the moment we sat down, Dylan was incredibly welcoming, attentive, personable, and knowledgeable of the menu! He took the time to recommend some great dishes and made sure we had everything we needed without ever feeling rushed. Not only was the service top-notch, but Dylan's friendly attitude made the whole dining experience even better. We had an amazing experience at Goen Dining + Bar by Roy Yamaguchi, thanks to Amy, the bartender! She went above and beyond--constantly checking on us, refilling our waters without us even asking, and making sure we had everything we needed. Her attention to detail and friendly energy really stood out. The salmon carpaccio was outstanding absolutely would get it again. If you have an appetite and appreciate good meal, EAT SOMEWHERE ELSE! We were seated next to the bar with patrons butts in our faces.
