Went there for lunch a while back with my hubby and daughter and had a great experience. I like the three course meal the kids get. Even my picky daughter liked everything she was served. My husband ordered the burger and it was cooked just like he asked and looked amazing. He said it was really good but not amazing. I took a bite and it was very good. I ordered the mussels and it was sooooooo good. Perfect size portion and very very tasty. We especially loved the children's cookbook they sell there. We asked to take a look and bought it. This is a really late post; but, as the saying goes, better late than never. We came home "early" for once and decided to go for happy hour someplace and tried here. The hostess was awesome! We decided to sit at the bar and was not disappointed! We ordered various "tapas" and everything was excellent! The service perfect and we had a very relaxing early evening. This is a new restaurant and bar in Kailua town. It is in the new complex that used to be Macy's. It is part of the Rou Yamaguchi chain of restaurants in Hawai'i. We have eaten here twice, once for dinner when it first opened and today for lunch. Today we sat at the bar but could have had any seat as there was only one other party in the entire restaurant. So the Service was polite and prompt. Drinks: I had the same cocktail both times, a Nippon 75 which I enjoyed and would recommend. Food,: The food was average at best. Our dinner was not memorable. Today I had a Ahi Wrap. It had almost no taste, perhaps the least memorable ahi wrap I have ever had. My wife had the beet and goat cheese which she did not finish and she said she would rate it 6/10. (She is rarely critical of anything.) This was a second chance for this local restaurant and I doubt we will return. We passed the Maui Brewery Company in the same building on our way to the car and it was more crowded. Visiting the island and stumbled on to this restaurant. First, let me say Amilia the bartender/server is fantastic. Good service, checking constantly to make sure we were good. Food was very good. Wife had the seared ahi salad. The fish was cooked just right, fresh greens, good vinaigrette, all in all she was happy. Me, I had the Unagi and pork belly (served over rice). All flavors were on point. The only change I made was adding a side of sushi ginger. It made the difference. It separates the oils from the pork belly, palete cleanser, then allows you to fully taste the Unagi. All in all, very good. read more

I've been here a couple of times and the food was always amazing! Would HIGHLY recommend the spicy tuna roll, the fish quality is impeccable and the flavors are on point. Best spicy tuna roll I've ever had! All in all never been disappointed with anything I've ordered here, plus it's a cheaper, less formal option of the Roys restaurants. Love that they have a take out option. A bit pricey, so not for everyday visits. But definitely a great choice for special occasions.

Atmosphere and service was decent but the low rating is based on taste of food and value. Portion size is really small for a $33 entree, which was the soy butterfish with soba. Again portion size was pitiful even at lunch. We got the salmon crab avocado roll ($19) and it didn't taste fresh!! Avocado was already oxidized and sour tasting. The salmon dip on the appetizer menu was extremely salty and heavy, not fresh tasting either. Kids meal is $16! Included some buttered penne and cheese quesadilla. We don't mind paying good money but the value just isn't there for us at this establishment. We won't be returning. read more

Ate here for NYE. Dinner was terrible - terribly expensive (for what it was), and terrible in taste. "Medium rare" salmon came out well done. The servers reaction was to suggest I douse it in extra teriyaki "to add moisture." Other dishes were average at best, and severely overpriced. Finally went! It was great. Did share style with my girlfriend. Ordered the spicy tuna roll, butter lettuce salad (with extra dressing on the side), the fresh market fish with beurre blank sauce and we finished it off with the butter Mochi w/chocolate sauce dessert. Very good food, and some creative combinations, but a little hard to find (back among parking lots off Kailua Road). Once we got there, it was very pleasant and enjoyable. We started off with some unusual and delicious cocktails and a "Fry Basket," which is a large portion of deep-fried portobello mushrooms with an addictive herb cream cheese dip (we had to ask for extra of that!). We followed that with a spicy ahi roll for Leanne (excellent), and a pork belly and unagi donburi for me (included rice, tsukemono, and a sous vide egg that brought the whole thing together). Understaffed but really delicious food, not only was the food good but it was creative. We sampled the happy hour menus where all the food was $5 and found out was also all vegetarian expect for some fish. The meatloaf sliders were "impossible" meat and completely fooled me. The slaw was light and crisp and not heavy at all which was a nice contrast to the richness of the meat and the tanginess of the sauce. Over all it was a great experience! I'm super disappointed! Only good item was the appetizer. I ordered their house noodle dish, why don't they just say it's their version of pho noodle. Was not hot(temp) to start out with, and the soup cannot be compared with what I thought a bowl of pho should taste. I love Roy's restaurant that's the only reason I insisted my hubby to try this new place. It was definitely a disappointment! Wanted to try here since the review looked Great. It was date night for my bf and I. I had made reservations and we were seated pretty quickly. We both like to observe when we go somewhere nice to eat. But If you are having dinner here or lunch, I recommend not sitting right next to the bar unless you want other patrons butt be in your face while having a meal. Don't know why they would put tables around the bar that is literally 2 1/2ft away. And if someone is sitting at the bar, fyi the stool at the bar is higher than the table, so when they sit they are practically right next to your table with their okoles in your face. We kindly asked to be moved and our server did move us which was nice. While watching every other guest get there apps before we did. Mind you, they came after us. They got there apps way before we did. Now for the food. On a scale of 1-5 We waited like 35 minutes for our app to arrive( No Joke) we both kept looking at our watches and timing it. Chicken Bao , ehhh Had better ones in Chinese restaurants, but it was just ok nothing that wowed us. I give this a 2 Mushroom Fries, it was alright, again the review that was on here wanted me to try it. It was pretty much bland. There wasn't any excitement to it where I would order it again. I did finish it though. Because I didn't want it to go to waste and was hungry. This was a 1 for me. Kampachi, was the best. Only thing is the presentation was horrible. I Snapchat the kampachi and my friends was asking what was that. Didn't say ohhhh that looks good but said it looked like they just put some shredded vegetables on a plate. We experienced great service at the hostess stand as well as at our table. Sunshine was our waitress and super friendly and helpful with our indecisiveness. Most of what I saw on the yelp menu wasn't here because the menu changes. We had. A mushroom fettuccine, filet mignon, catch of the day (swordfish), and shrimp salad. We are here several times after Goen first opened several years ago and were not impressed. Last night we tried again and we were wowed by the food and the very thoughtful service. The waitperson was very helpful helping me select the gluten free items on the menu. The food was amazing -- the burrata as mentioned in other reviews is exceptional (more pesto please), the beet and feta salad was excellent, and the smoked salmon appetizer was delicious. The waitperson misheard our order (damn masks) and brought the salmon appetizer instead of the salmon dinner by mistake, but comped the appetizer -- even after we ate the whole thing and told her to put it on our bill. We were able to cancel the entree but we will be back soon to try it. We also had the avocado crab roll, which was good, but I probably wouldn't order it again. We tried the cheesecake and flourless chocolate cake with caramel for dessert. We've had better cheesecake elsewhere but the chocolate cake hit the right notes. I recognize that's not a rave but I have the impression it presents itself is a high-end place and I feel it's an OK place. We really like Goen, now that we gave it some time to tweak their opening menus. Love the mushroom basket. My only complaint is that you need to keep a chicken dish on your menu. One time I go, it's there, and then it's gone. Not everyone eats only fish or meat. Your only poultry is duck and that's way too fatty for some. You had a nice chicken dish not to long ago.
