Fresh awesome hard sourdough bread...the best! So glad we have a bakery like this in santa rosa!

First off, I could kill my friend for introducing me to this place. I have had their bread at her house a couple of times and wanted to check out the bakery for myself. The first time I tried it was right after Christmas. Since everything was sold out online, I private messaged them on Facebook. They were very quick to respond, telling me that they had baked extra bread for the holidays and that I should be able to pick up something as a walk-in instead of ordering online. They were to open at 1:30 PM. I thought getting there by 1:15 pm, I should be fine. When I arrived there was already quite a line. I was probably number 30. I patiently waited wondering what I would find in the bakery. When they opened, they put the French and US flag out and immediately started passing out samples to the crowd. I figured once I got to the front door, they would have nothing left, but I was wrong. Their bread is just like getting bread in France!The people in the shop couldn't be nicer greeting you with a French greeting of bonjour! They will explain each type of bread they have for that day. I know they have certain types on certain days, but I'm still too new to know which kind on which day. I am gluten sensitive, but this bread does not effect me at all, which is the same reaction I got whille in France. Apparently it has to do with the Levain process of how they make the bread as well as the organic ingredients. All I know is I am now there every week. I'm there so often I'm also getting the added bonus of learning French! It's a bit expensive but so worth it!!! Don't pass it up. This bakery is beautiful! It was a heavenly retreat from the rain. The people are as warm as the building itself. The owner, I presume, gave our 3 year old his own little baguette and gushed over him. We were a little nervous in line because we had been recommended this spot and didn't read a menu, or know what to expect and the line was decently long and moving quickly. They also had so much inventory for it being after 4pm, we were expecting a get what you get situation and we were far off! However, the young lady who helped us was beyond helpful. We told her we wanted something hearty to accompany a stew, that didn't have dairy in it. We walked out with Pan De Campagne and it was fabulous! Hearty and a very unique, rich aroma; almost like a stout ale, super moist for multiple days and the crust was chewy and perfect. We were also wooed by the pastries and grabbed a brioche pear to split for breakfast the next day. We were sad we opted to only get one Lol. The sourdough baguette was also ridiculously good. This place will be a regular spot for us! We're making a list for next time! read more

Met the owner, at the French market. She was fabulous and charming. We enjoyed their bakery items so we asked for the address of their bakery. I fell in love! This place is charming and the service is excellent! We drove up from the east bay and were very happy to find a wonderful bakery. She does a superb job in all her baked goods. Bread and ice cream are something to die for. So authentic french and delicious. I wish I could work there for a couple of weeks and learn how to make bread and ice cream. Every bite of her bread is a trip to heaven. I always try my B1 level french with her. Wow, magnifique! We happened to be stopping by next door at Zoftig later in the afternoon when Gougette happened to be open. While we waited for our order at Zoftig, we went inside Gougette and were blown away with what an awesome place it is. Out of the 5 customers that were in there about the same time we were, I think 4 of us were actively speaking French with the folks behind the counter. Authenticity... nice! We got samples of several breads, including the black olive loaf and the chocolate cherry bread. We ended up going home with a bit of both! This place is the real deal and I don't think I've had better bread in the US. Makes me miss living in Paris. read more

Oh my freaking goodness this place is absolutely delicious! The bread is baked freshly right on site. The owners are super friendly and so helpful. Hubby and I arrived at 110pm on a Thursday, we were the second in line. By 125 there was a huge line behind us - so if you don't want to wait I def recommend coming early. Because of COVID they aren't letting anyone inside but there is a little menu with some of the baked goods. I did feel a little rushed and it was confusing to pick out everything I wanted. The lady was nice but because of the line she wanted to get through to us quickly. I think there could be a better system so that first timers can explore what they want. We ended up getting a baguette and one of the loaves which was supposed to be similar to the chocolate one. It was currents and nectarines I think and while the texture was well made it was lacking sweetness. The baguette however was fantastic - perfectly crispy on the outside and soft in the inside. Overall not bad I would give it a try but needs to figure out a better system during COVID. read more

Just died and went to bread heaven. After hearing about Gougette for a couple of months, we were finally able to stop in when they were open. Ok, So now I have to go every day they are open!! Wonderful couple that will gladly explain their fantastic breads to you and let you sample. The rye bread was awesome and will go back for that but settled on the pain de ville and did everything I could to not tear off hunks in the car. Got home with the sharp bread knife and enjoyed several slices of the still warm loaf with and without butter. Fantastic both ways!! They offer both a lighter bake which I got (slightly softer) and a darker bake. The de ville is suggested for chicken and turkey and the heartier campagne for beef and lamb. Just outstanding. I've never ordered ahead (many people do) I just stop in after 1:30 and roll the dice, buying whatever is available. This is not a pastry shop- it's a French bread shop. It's so fabulous that I almost don't want to rate it for fear it will become too busy but we just MUST support these small local businesses that are producing such very high quality of products. Magnifiques !!!! I had the most delicious bread in all of Sonoma county. I walked by after lunch with friends and the beautiful baked bread drew me in....and boy was I glad I was lucky enough to time it right. This bakery is open a few hours a day but if you can plan your trip, it is well worth the experience. As I walked in I was offered a sample of a freshly baked, warm cheese bread and it was heavenly. The best damn bread you'll find outside of Europe, all handmade by a local engineer scientist boulanger using just three ingredients -- flour, water, salt. Maestro trained in France with some of the best old-world masters and puts ridiculous passion into everything he bakes. That Goguette is in Santa Rosa makes one more reason why it's hard to ever leave this area. Best bets: Miche (w/toasted sesame seeds!), Pain de ville, Pain de partage (3' long & flat), Pain de campagne, and Fougasse (cheese stuffed - should be outlawed) They've got really limited hours, but don't be surprised if you find yourself here every day that they're open. Ohhhh my word!! A work vendor brought by a box of pastries from this place and I swear I died and went to heaven at first bite. I tried a bite of the blueberry chocolate one, a cinnamon one, and the le regale....well that one I ate the whole thing. It's like a little loaf of sweet bread with chocolate in it and tiny sugar crystals on top and it just melts in your mouth. I can't get over how wonderful it was. I've never been to France buy holy they bake different over there. Don't miss out, go try something immediately! this place is amazing. some of the best bread in ca. and it goes beyond the bread everything they make is really good. the place is very aesthetically pleasing and the staff are great. my only problem is that if u don't live in santa rosa it's virtually impossible to be there when it's open. even when i show up there on random days it's usually closed. but ya know when a place has hours that crazy it sort of tends to mean it's the real deal and that's what this is. i really don't want to say anything negative in fear i won't be allowed back in and long fermentation based baked goods are extremely important in my life. so disregard any negative stuff i have said if u live near here and claim to love bakeries and don't go here u might need to go see a doctor. read more

I only give this review 4 stars because of their price, their bread is wonderful, but it's more of a treat when you're forking out $7 for a medium loaf, although delicious and moist, a treat for sure. That being said! You can't go wrong with a baguette! Or their olive bread. If you buy anything, buy their olive bread it is absolutely scrummy! read more
