Eaten here a gazillion times, and, remarkable when I think about it, I've never had a bad dish. Excellent mix of items. The buffet has a small # of dishes, but all of them worthy choices, and they go well together. I'm an omnivore, and vegetarian restaurants sometimes leave me feeling that I need to rush out for a giant steak. But this place satisfies me. It's healthy, tasty, and filling. We prepaid for a meal for Shabbat as the restaurant is vegetarian-kosher. We added a 20% tip ahead of time. We arrived soaking wet after getting caught in a rainstorm. The entire restaurant was empty save a woman standing at the counter talking on her phone. We seated ourselves. We weren't offered a towel or napkins to dry off. We waited a fair amount of time for our meal to be delivered. They brought one plate and one dish at a time with a wait in between. Next came drinks and perhaps 10 minutes later the bread. I had to ask for each element. We had ordered a special naan and while they said it was that particular one, it clearly wasn't. I asked for the raita and it was delivered at the end of the meal. Totally useless at that point. We had to ask for every single item and it was a complete imposition on the part of the server. She never got off her phone and barely spoke a word. While the food was tasty, the experience itself left a bad taste in my mouth. It was pricey and I do not feel like we got our money's worth. I mostly recommend the food itself (kosher Indian isn't so common and while the paneer dish had a nice flavor it had barely a handful of pieces of the cheese) but I would give the restaurant zero stars and wish I could get the tip back. A great vegetarian option in the loop area! Nothing too fancy or over the top, but a nice casual place to enjoy some vegetarian Indian food. What I ordered: my boyfriend and I got the buffet. I loved it! In most dishes, you could not tell that meat was missing because they were so flavorful. They have a build your own chaat station( I believe that's what it's called) that I really enjoyed. The buffet for lunch was $10. I think that is a fair price. Very mediocre Indian food that leans bland and greasy. Was it offensive? No. But it was definitely a letdown for the cost. We ordered the daal makhani, saag paneer, veggie korma, and app combo. Samosas and pakoras are hard to get wrong but somehow these missed the mark. The veggie korma wasn't a mix of vegetables and seemed to be mostly peas in a creamy but bland sauce. The daal was really chunky and also seemed to need tadka. The saag paneer was single note and greasy. I wouldn't mind this food if it was cheaper, but the quality definitely doesn't justify its cost. read more

Mainly with students and regulars as the staff seemed to know quite a few people. They also have a lot of kosher food as well which is rare in the Delmar Loop/CWE area. The prices are very affordable and the food was pretty good. The service was quick- the lady who served us seemed to be the owner or manager and she was super friendly. It was very crowded. First, I will say the owner of Gokul is extremely friendly and a pleasure to know. I called Gokul because I wanted a caterer for my Indian wedding that was being held at the Temple. Given the temple is a vegetarian facility, I preferred a pure vegetarian restaurant. Gokul was recommended by multiple people. I called and spoke with the owner, Mr. Jitender, and he was extremely kind and courteous from the very start. After tasting the food, we agreed on a large catering order and he assured us he would handle everything - we didn't need to worry about anything at all. On the day of the wedding, he sent his staff to set up ahead of time; they brought soft drinks, chai, mango lassi and appetizers for the start of the event, just like we discussed. The main dishes were amazing and enjoyed by all. I will say the malai kofta was my absolute favorite. The mango lassi was so refreshing and tasty. Everyone had a great time and really loved the food. I recommend Gokul to anyone looking for a great Indian meal or for a great catering option. The owner is a man of integrity and really cares about his customers. read more

After a morning of hiking at Castlewood, an Indian buffet sounded just heavenly. We popped in Sunday around 1pm expecting the place to be packed, but there were just a couple other tables of people. SCORE! The buffet was huge, and had a ton of options (all vegetarian, of course). The paneer tikka masala was a standout (you just have to dig for those chunks of cheese!) and the spinach & chickpeas dish was also pretty good. Actually everything was damn good, and I'm a pretty devout carnivore. At $13 (on Sundays) its on the pricier side for an Indian buffet, but not terrible. The place had a nice atmosphere. My only complaints would be that the dal dishes were way too watery (you had to dig down with the spoon to get the goods) and that they offered no dessert choices besides chunks of cantaloupe and melon. I order from Gokul pretty regularly. At first I was hooked by their saag paneer and vegetable korma, both of which were delicious when I first started ordering from Gokul last summer. However, over the past few months I have noticed that the quality and flavor has been terribly inconsistent. Sometimes it tastes quite good, and other times--most time, as of late--it tastes subpar. Last night I ordered saag paneer and it was clear that something was wrong. There were many large red chunks of what appeared to be unblended tomato (which is unusual, because I did not know that saag paneer even had tomato--it hasn't in the past), and the taste was very bitter. Sometimes the dishes have been bland, but I keep ordering in hopes that it will taste just as good as it has in the past. But yesterday, there was something truly wrong with the saag paneer. What we got doesn't even match the description on their menu. This is what it says: Paneer Makhani Paneer Cooked in a creamy tomato and onion sauce with mild spices. This is what we got: Tiny diced cubes of paneer in a thin sauce with green peppers and chunks of tomato. Taste and looks different than every other Paneer Makhani I've ever ordered. Two words: Dinner Buffet This place was so good and unexpected. It had always been on our radar but we had always found a reason to go somewhere else. But we decided to dive in when we saw the menu that would satiate my fiance's craving for bhel puri. When we walked in the place was pretty crowded because of events going on in the loop but the biggest surprise was the buffet. We have never seen a night time indian buffet and we looked like kids in a candy store. On top of that, half of the buffet was a make your own bhel station that was ingenious. The food itself was really good and everything was vegan and kosher. I am an omnivore but I never once said that something needed meat because it was spot on. The level of spice and assortment meant that each trip to the buffet was filled with new items that made the experience truly enjoyable. This place has left its place among our "maybe" and will be included in many more discussions of what we want for dinner. read more

Last minute choice, and we were surprised at how much we enjoyed it! I was skeptical due to the fact it was all vegetarian. BUT Gokul served really enjoyable dishes and different compared with other Indian Buffets. The Saag Paneer (which is a dish you do find frequently) was magnificent. There were chunks of cheese mixed with the spinach. The cheese was light and blended in with the dish wonderfully. My first plate was the best, filled with Pav Bhaji (potatoes, carrots, cauliflower, and peas w/ tomato, onion and spices), Saag Paneer (spinach), Aloo Began (eggplant and potato with Indian Spices), and rice with a slice of naan. The second plate included more lentil type dishes but all were runnier than I would have liked (Yellow Daal and Makhani daal - black lentils). The were not my favorite selections, but worth trying. I recommend putting the runnier items in a bowl and using the naan to dip and enjoy! Very impressed with the variety and tastes of this restaurant. read more

Best Indian food in STL. Always consistent with exceptional vareity in their dishes. You can satisfy almost any Indian craving here. The textures, spicing, and ingredients are very authentic. Their use of legumes and vegetables make it very healthy. Its all kosher too so it's a local hot spot for the kosher community. Monday is vegan night where there's a whole vegan buffet! I very rarely go out for Indian food, but I was genuinely surprised by the food, service and overall dining experience at Gokul. It is one of the only kosher restaurants in St. Louis, so options are very limited to begin with, and it is nice to have an establishment like this which will fill you up but offers a unique menu. The restaurant is clean and a good size. We enjoyed the Sunday night dinner buffet, which consisted of a number of Indian dishes I've never even heard of before, but were all delicious and interesting to try. Some of the food was a little spicy, but that was to be expected. Even though it's an all-vegan menu, the carnivore in me certainly wasn't dissatisfied for one night. Service was very efficient, the waitstaff were polite, and the value was decent. I hope to return next time I'm in St. Louis! read more

5 stars from a mom of a picky child! I went in with my 3 yr old and they couldn't have been nicer or more accommodating. My son didn't want anything from the buffet much to the dismay of his parents, but the owner/manager Jim made him a tiny little bowl of channa masala (chick peas in gravy) and along with the rice pudding from the buffet, some naan and a mango lassi he was as happy as a clam! So much so in fact, he asked all week if he could go back to the restaurant "with the nice man" and have more channa masala and another mango lassi. As an aside, the adults thoroughly enjoyed our buffet both times. We do the "parents-of-toddler-scarf-your-food-down-as-fast-as-possible" meal dance, and despite eating like great white sharks we found the food satisfying and flavorful. read more

I actually really loved the food I got here, but I have one huge gripe that I've gotta let out: why have an online ordering system when it doesn't work?! When you go to the website it gives you an option to place an order online, so that's what I did, but about 15 minutes later I got a weird feeling and called them just to confirm. The guy who answered the phone wasn't even phased by my phone call... I just got a "no, we didn't get it. What do you want to order?" I placed my order (again) and went to pick it up 20 minutes later. When I walked in there was no other customers there and the place was dead silent... the guy behind the counter, who I'm guessing was the same guy as the one on the phone, barely spoke a word to me when I came in to pick everything up. It was maybe the worst atmosphere in a restaurant I've seen in a long time. I hear that the lunch buffet is the best thing to check out here, and I know a lot of other yelpers like this place, so maybe I need to go that route. The food DID make up for the crappy experience I had while getting it, that's for sure. Quick rundown of what I ordered: -Peas Pulao, $7.99- Basmati rice cooked with green peas, nuts, cumin, and Indian spices. So very good. -Bhel Puri, $4.99- Puffed rice mixed with boiled potatoes, onions, chick peas, and black channa, and topped with tamarind and mint chutney. Might have been the best thing we ordered, the spices in there were incredible. -Vegetable Korma, $11.99- Mixed vegetables, with a hint of cashews and raisins, cooked in a creamy tomato sauce and served with rice. An old reliable, but Gokul does this better than other indian place. Everything was spiced perfectly and I wanted to keep eating more and more but my stomach was way too full. The beauty of that situation is that I have plenty more in the refrigerator for tomorrow's dinner. I'll be back again for the buffet... kind of over trying to order things to go here! read more

This is such good food! Randomly dropped in for lunch and just dove in. Everything was tasty, authentic and the woman who does the cooking came out and chatted. She was so sweet and kind - showing one of the other customers how to put together a plate and just made us all feel welcome and like we were part of the family. The food is very well prepared, you can tell they use good fresh ingredients. Buffets can be a bit rough but this was fantastic. 2 full servings for me were easy to scarf down. We've been searching for outstanding Indian food since we moved here 19 months ago, and tonight we finally found it! We tried three entrées and two appetizers, and even after a 20 minute car ride home the food was so good that it had us "oo"ing and "ahh"ing obnoxiously like that scene in What About Bob. Everything was packed with flavor and fresh, wholesome ingredients. I've had a lot of korma in my day, but the inclusion of coconut and the abundance of nuts in Gokul's paneer korma was a revelation of delight. We don't go to the Loop as much as we used to, but we still try to eat at Gokul every so often. It's such a nice, bright, open restaurant. My favorites are the Pav Bhaji and Vegetable Korma. When our vegetarian friend is in town, he always wants to come here. I've never done it before, but it appears you can order a la carte, so since this pandemic prevents dine-in service, we can still support them! The buffet is a dangerous event but so worth it! It's hard to resist all the options. The food is all very flavorful and of course I had to try one of everything and then went back for seconds on the highlights which was the daal and kadhi but the naan was great too. I love how it's all vegetarian and I don't have to worry about meat concerns and the food is very filling and the staff are wonderful. I love this place! It is the only Kosher restaurant in the greater St. Louis area, so it usually has a significant Jewish population :) I have only ever been on Monday night, which is the vegan buffet. It is always hot and fresh and I see the workers bringing out new food all the time. My personal favorite is the chana masala, which is chickpeas. They also have these delicious little fried circular things that I love. I have never even made it to the second half of the buffet (dessert section I think?) because I fill up on the first half. They also have really good mango lassi, but they are super filling so be careful! It's basically a mango smoothie with yogurt. The staff is always very friendly and the woman who seems to run the place always recognizes as repeat customers. Parking can be a little tricky, especially since there is construction nearby, but I love this place! read more

Food we ordered: 1) Chhole Bhature - Very good, Chhole was little salty. 2) Pav Bhaji - Very good though they don't have Pav, they serve Bread Slices - That was okay with us as the lady did tell us upfront. 2) Wheat Roti - Was made out of old dough, we rejected they did not charge! 4) Idly Sambhar - Terrible. All three items - idly - Old, sambhar - Watery and tasteless Coconut chutney - Watery and tasteless on our request they did not charge. 5) Ragda Patties - We removed all patties as it was old microwaved. We had only Ragda which was very good Over all experience including very good service : good. They also serve buffet during evenings. We did not have that as we had to drive!!! read more
