The food is SO GOOD here. It's kind of a hole in the wall but is always very busy with locals. When I was walking in, a regular recommended the zaidys to me, saying that was the best item on the menu. I got it with lots of sauce and LOVED it. Ordered through Grubhub to try kosher food on vacation. We looked at the previous reviews on there, and they said the food was good, but customer service and delivery accuracy were lacking. Well, we ordered anyway. When the food arrived, all our sauces and Laffa were not in the bags. They refunded the laffa, and said we could come and get the sauces if we wanted them. Well, since we had no sauces I have to rate their food poorly as that adds to the flavor. Since they couldn't get me my left out items, I have to rate their customer service poorly. If you've ever wanted a laffa as big as your head, well, you won't get it here. You'll get one that's about twice the size! While waiting for a meeting at YU, the boyfriend and I asked friends on Twitter where to go and this Israeli grill got several mentions, so we decided to give it a go. I ordered the falafel on laffa (falafalaffa), not knowing how gigantic it would come. I got the regular chips and chummus, and threw on tahini, Israeli salad, pickles, and some spicy sauce. They wrapped it, threw it into some foil, chopped it in half, and served it up. I only ate half of it because it was, well, HUGE. But it was so, so tasty. A serious nosh of a serious Israeli kind. It reminded me of eating falafel on the streets in Israel, and that was such a comfort. The boyfriend got his very first schwarma with chips, and although I want him to write his own review, he scarfed that thing down without thinking about it. And? He loved it. The crew here is quick, attentive, and knows how to run a busy business. Most importantly? They know how to keep all the Yeshiva boys in check when they're crowding the counter. The prices aren't great, but I really can't bring myself to complain when it comes to kosher food. My falafalaffa ran $9, if that gives you any idea. Bravo Golan. It's a small great kosher place around my neighborhood . I go from time to time. They have great falafel and I love the chicken Teriyaki on a pita with the vegetables and hummus and fries. This place brings middle eastern cuisine to the Heights. There prices are low budget. You could get a meal for less than 10 dollars. The falafel are my favorite . My family enjoyed their food but one thing I was deeply disappointed. Since I am deaf, I thought it would be easier to order food over the phone via video relay sign language interpreter. They refused to accept my call. I had to write down the order and then schlepped over there. They read my note and did not apologize for my inconvenience at all. The food here is very good (4-5 stars). Unfortunately, the service isn't that good (closer to 2 stars). For the second time in a row, our delivery arrived without any of the sauces (tahini, charif, etc.), which are an important part of the meal. After the first time this happened, the owner (Benji) apologized and agreed to provide something complimentary on our next order. That was decent. We just received our second order and the same thing happened. I just called and spoke to a fellow named Avi who was unapologetic and only offered to take the price of the rice off the order. When I explained that I wanted the sauces for eating the rest of the food, he was fairly curt and wouldn't even consider trying to deliver the sauces. Very weak. Having never been to any of those places before we decided to trust what our friends told us and hit up Golan. We were told over and over that the place will not disappoint, and they were right. I decided to go with the chicken schwarma, with the chips inside (of course), and with in a few minutes my pita was inhaled. It really was perfect. Additionally, it was ready in no time. They only just raised their prices due to supplier price raises after about 3 years of prices being consistent. Each half is about the size of a burrito; you're basically getting two full meals for $12. That's a steal, especially when you taste how delicious the product is. This is a great place to get some authentic Israeli falafel and Schwarma. It's greasy and delicious! One of the best things about this place is that it's open until around 2AM, and it's hard to find Kosher food open that late in the city. It is not a convenient location up on 187th street, but it is the best (kosher) laffa in New York. There is always a steady stream of patrons huddled around the counter, and as in the Middle East, it helps to be insistent. I frequently see NYPD filling their orders inside, furthering my confidence in the food. The clientele are mostly students from the adjacent Jewish seminary, which might deter some, or attract others to its odd sub-cultural milieu. Laffa, shwarma, chumus, chips is the way to go, though at $14 it is not as inexpensive as most fast food. Though it might feed two people (or one hungry adolescent). read more
