So excited to to have another Northern Chinese BBQ restaurant in the north end of York Region. This is my second time trying this new spot. I have to say I love everything about it! This placed replaced 39 BBQ and Izumi before that. The meat skewers are well barbecued, it's juicy and flavorful. Something different that's unlike the other bbq spots is that there is a slight hint of sweetest/ glaze that they use on the meat. I find that this gives a real well balanced of sweet, salty, spicy and savory. We were a table of four this time and ordered their spicy clams, grilled scallop with garlic and vermicelli, and their Korean pork neck rice bowl. All the dishes were well spiced and so flavorful. The clams were juicy and fresh and don't let the small dish fool you. They do not skim on the clams. My most surprising dish would have to be the Korean pork neck rice bowl. If you've ever had Korean pork bone soup the flavor profile is very similar without much of the soup. It's such a comforting dish. The service was great, the owners were extremely helpful and personable. The restaurant is cozy and clean. It's casual which makes it a great spot to grab a drink with a great menu to go along with an ice cold beer. If you are looking for some great homey dishes coupled with delicious and flavorful Chinese bbq this is your spot!

We heard about this place from a friend and decided to give a try today. If you like Korean food, this is a great place to try. It is similar but also has its own style. The food quantity is great. Some of the marinated pork dish are some of the best I have tried in north GTA. It is a small place so it gets filled up pretty fast.

We got the gamjatang jeongol and it was massive for two people. There were raw pork belly slices on top of the gamjatang so I had to make sure they were fully cooked before consuming. It was hard because there was a lot of soup so it made it extra difficult to push the raw items to the bottom. We ordered less spicy but it was still really spicy! It was flavourful and they gave lots of pork bone. We took the rest home and I had to add water to dilute it lol.

For a group of three, we went with budaejjigae (army stew), which is good for two to four people. The server seemed surprised that we weren't ordering more. If the menu lists that it can feed four people, it seemed like plenty for us, and we aren't big eaters. We received four side dishes -- cucumbers, radishes, nappa cabbage kimchi, and one we weren't familiar with. We asked the server what it was, and he said the name, but we still didn't know what it was. I asked him to repeat it, and he appeared quite annoyed that he had to say it more than once. The army stew wasn't cooking once the server had set it down on the table. It looked like the butane gas canister was empty. We used the call button to call the server back, since he was nowhere to be found. The army stew had luncheon meat, sausage, beans, zucchini, kappa cabbage, tofu, rice cakes, instant ramen, and a slice of American cheese. It was delicious.  Overall, the food is good, but the service is quite lacking. We felt like we were bothering the server by inquiring about the side dish, asking for extra chopsticks, and requiring another gas canister.

My visit to Noodle Max would be one of these unexplained phenomenon. I was really hoping to try this hyped up beef noodle place in Richmond Hill, only to have my hope squashed by a long line up at 4:20pm in the afternoon. 4:20!!! WTH!!! On a snowy, slushy late afternoon, I blindly (and slowly) drove my way aimlessly to Aurora. I remember some Asian restaurant getting rave reviews up in Aurora and that being Noodle Max (maybe it wasn't so aimless). If you are someone who believes in destiny, I can tell you destiny will occasionally give you sxxxxy things. Noodle Max would be one of them. Noodle Max's main offerings are Lan Zhou style noodles and was it ever an unauthentic and underwhelming experience. I wouldn't go as far to say the soup was tasteless like water, but it's pretty bland. While the soup for Lan Zhou noodles are not generally crazy strong in flavour, it should still have the taste of spices. The beef slices were also pretty tame in flavour. They were ok. The main plus about their noodle was the portion; quite big. The noodle had better texture than most store bought noodles, but it did not have the proper floury taste and the limited flavours from the soup was not able to hang onto the noodles. Aurora used to be a black hole in terms of dining options, but not anymore. How Noodle Max continued to garner such a high Yelp and Google rating befuddles me.

There were only two other customers in the entire place so that was surprising they took so long. The positive is they have a ton of seating available and it's clean inside. While we were waiting for our food the only worker that was there left to get food from a neighbouring restaurant or T&T (I couldn't tell but assumed maybe they ran out of food for our order but I could be wrong) then we waited even longer. You can see I took a picture of another customer who came in and was waiting with no employees there. Then after 15 mins MORE of waiting for whoever in the kitchen to add the rice in to the chicken they gave us our food. We weren't able to eat it there so had to take it to go at this point since we were late for an appointment. I asked the employee to give me a price difference refund since she charged us for a more expensive dish versus what we actually ordered. Be careful when you go here. My friend, Chris, was in Newmarket for an appointment. He was interested in trying Cynthia's Paradise's AYCE menu. He asked if I'd like to have dinner with him last Wednesday. I said yes. I find that our meal outings lately have been AYCE, stuff-yourself-silly ones. I like that we are both comfortable with each other's food comas! I left work at around 2:30 pm and made a leisurely drive up to Newmarket. 1.5 hours to get here wasn't bad. I eventually drove north along Yonge Street, made a right into the plaza, and parked next to Chris's vehicle. There was plenty of parking, but it did get busy by the time we left at around 7:45 pm. Chris made our reservation for 5 pm. It was perfect, as I tend to have an early dinner after work on Wednesdays. We originally got a booth near the front door. The woman staffer who seated us then said that we had the back booth reserved. We moved ourselves and our water that we got right off the bat to the booth. It was a large booth. It came in handy, as the table was large. We got an iPad with two menus to switch between: - Drinks - Food We got these drinks: - Coke - Diet Coke (me) Drinks are not included in the AYCE price per person. Luckily, there are free refills for pop, which we needed to down all the food that we ordered! I ordered a bunch of items first. The menu is extensive, as there are Thai, Japanese, Korean, and Chinese items. Chris followed suit. We had over thirty items. Oops! Here's the damage that we made: Soups - Wonton - Hot and sour Starters - Mango salad - Smoked duck salad - Sous vide truffle egg (1) - Deep-fried cuttlefish ball (2) - Crispy soft-shell crab (1) - Mango shrimp with cream (3) Tempura - Crab meat (2) - Sweet potato (2) Veggies - Honey garlic crispy bean curd - Okinawa mixed vegetables Sushi - Smoked duck and crabmeat (6) - Torched salmon sushi (spicy) (1) - Torched snapper sushi (spicy) (1) - Tempura crab meat roll (6) - Spicy crab meat hand roll (1) - Smoked duck sushi (1) - Crispy banana avocado roll (4) Dim sum (they take 8 - 9 minutes to prepare) - Steamed pork dumpling (2) - Pork dumplings (2) - Shrimp dumpings (2) - Beef dumpling (2) Thai - Yellow curry chicken - Thai spicy fried rice Korean - Korean spicy beef and bun wrap - Grilled beef rib (3) Teriyaki - Beef - Chicken Noodles - Korean glass noodles with beef (japchae) - Japanese-style chicken udon Overall, the food was yummy. Some dishes that you'd think would have sauce, like the yellow curry chicken, didn't have much. It was like there was a drought with all sauces. Sauces with noodles or sauce on top of sushi rolls were perfect. Favourite dishes: - Japchae (tasty with a ton of flavour and stretchy noodles) - Sous vide truffle egg (flavourful with a spice kick that made boring dishes come to life) - Spicy crab meat hand roll (real crab and a generous size) - Crispy soft-shell crab (so crispy and delicious, with real crab) - Crispy banana avocado roll (unique pairing that tasted like a dessert sushi roll and the flavours worked) Dishes that I wouldn't get again: - Anything torched (torching was barely noticeable and the sushi lacked flavour) - Deep-fried cuttlefish balls (a find-the-cuttlefish journey within doughy balls) - Yellow curry chicken (sauce barely coated the chicken and veggies) - Thai spicy fried rice (there was nothing Thai about this dish, as there was no basil or coconut milk, and it was super oily) Food for thought: - I liked the smoked duck options, which was different. The smoked duck tasted like I was having deli meat. If you don't like smoked meat, you may want to steer clear of it. - The wonton soup was the perfect portion with yummy pork wontons. - The dim sum is decent. The soup dumplings could have had more soup in them, but everything was solid. - Get the Korean spicy beef bao wraps with the mango salad. Chris made the suggestion to add the mango to the spicy beef filling. Stellar! - We didn't get soy for our sushi. We ended up using the tempura dipping sauce instead. - This place does noodles well (japchae and udon) - Shrimp dishes tend to contain large shrimp. The downside ordering a bunch of food from the iPad is that it all came to us at once. The cat robot was frequently asking us to pick up the food from it. I wish that the cat robot would face me, but it never did. Because we got all our food at once, we ended up putting everything on our large circular table and taking a photo of everything before we chowed down. This robot sang happy birthday to the booth behind us. It starts in English. It started the Japanese version, but the server stopped it... haha! We came close to finishing everything! I'd return for a food coma again. (258)
