Must go when in Seward. What an unexpected delicious meal in a small Alaskan town. Every dish we ordered was delicious. Perhaps it was the rain and cold winds, but the bowl of claim chowder warmed us up all over and we literally licked the bowl. I ordered chowder and wife ordered a drink and neither were every brought to the table, but when bill arrive I was charged for the chowder and had to ask to remove from the bill. I happened to really enjoy my meal (even though I'm a tad picky). I had the AK Salmon Avocado Sandwich and my husband had the Northwestern Burger. He thought his was great. He thought his burger was juicy and the curly fries were zesty. My Salmon could have been a teeny bit less cooked and the Sweet Potato wedges a bit more cooked as some of them weren't ready to serve, but the flavors were on point. Not what we were hoping for. The service was below average and the food was underwhelming. The best meal of the 3 was our toddler's chicken nuggets and fries. I ordered the coho salmon plate and the fish was still very cold in the center. I understand not wanting to overcook the fish, but it should still be at least warm. The veggies on the plate were well cooked and tasty. I would have asked the server to have my fish cooked for a bit longer, but he never checked back in with us except to give us the bill. My wife had the halibut and salmon fish and chips combo. The halibut were nice chunks that were cooked fine. However, they must had had a shortage of salmon, as the three tiny salmon pieces looked like scraps that were over cooked. Oh, I almost forgot about the clam chowder. The flavor was nice, but I can't recall a time I had a bowl with so much sand it in. I understand that it can be hard to get all the sand out of clams, but this was like eating a teaspoon full of sand. Do better. Needless to say, we won't be back. read more

I know you're supposed to have the seafood when you're in Alaska, but the boy caught a 15 lb. king two days before, so we were salmoned out at that point. Meat was on our minds when we walked in. It was between this place and brewpub down the street for late lunch/early dinner. Very glad we chose this. Cute and rustic interior. Very comfortable. Seemed like your basic breakfast/lunch diner with an Alaska twist. Service was fine. As for the food: Damn good burgers! The wife and kids had a cheeseburger, northwestern burger, and mushroom burger respectively. Wife got the sweet potato fries, kids had the regular ones. The boy was still talking about how good the burger was 3 days later (I'm trying not to take that as an indictment of my camp cooking during the rest of the trip...) I had the Southwest Chicken Sandwich and onion rings. In a word, the sandwich was fantastic. Highly recommended. Large chicken breast ,very flavorful jalapeno aioli, wonderful bun. A bit sloppy, but worth every bite. I would have loved to have gone back for breakfast (I have a feeling it would be killer), but we had an early kayak trip booked the next morning. While visiting from out of state we stopped into Gold Rush for breakfast. The interior is rustic and clean and the staff was very kind and accommodating. We each ordered veggie omelets which were tasty and substituted the English muffin for a homemade pancake. The pancake was very light and fluffy. Overall it was a good meal for a reasonable price. Just know, produce can be harder to get in AK so don't expect to be blown away by it during your stay. read more

I sense from other reviews that this place is a solid choice for breakfast. But we came for dinner, and our meal was pricey and not worth it. We ordered fish n chips, halibut tacos, and one slice of cheesecake. No drinks. Bill was 60.00, not including tip for our funny and attentive waiter. Portion of fish n chips was plentiful, though fish was on the soggy side. Halibut tacos were fine, not awesome, but for the 25.00 price tag, I almost laughed out loud at the three minuscule chips of fish atop each taco; 2 oz of fish total, at most. I understand it's expensive in Alaska, but FISH? The one thing that they have tons of here and shouldn't need to overcharge for? We came here for lunch. This place is really cute. It's got a bistro type atmosphere to it. Some really cute decor. My husband had the burger and fries. It was really tasty. It had a nice ciabatta roll and some really crispy fries. I had the salad and seafood chowder combo. The chowder was really good! Lots of seafood. The salad was ok. The dressing was more of a yogurt sauce. I would have preferred a vinegarette type. The portions were big for the price so that was great. Perfect lunch spot. read more

I came here for lunch once before and it was okay, but my most recent trip for breakfast was unimpressive. There weren't a lot of people when my friend and I came in, but by the time we were ready to leave, it was crowded and it seemed there were only one or two servers the whole time. It was a good ten minutes just to cash out. Their breakfast offerings are very egg-heavy, which I guess is expected since it's you know, breakfast time. But the offerings were just.. differently-dressed up eggs. And some pancakes. Nothing really exciting. In my restauranting experience, there's generally always some sort of oatmeal, yogurt, burrito, and other stuff than just eggeggegg. I really hate eggs, so I ordered a side of potatoes ($5.00?!?!?!?!), a fruit cup ($4.50), an English muffin ($3), and coffee ($3). The potatoes were greasy and only half-cooked. Some pieces were soft enough to fork, but others were undercooked. The fruit cup (which also came on the side for my friend's meal) had different fruits like apples, but some were overripe and very bruised, making half the fruit inedible. The coffee was okay but burnt-tasting.. My friend commented her Benedict was "just okay" and that the eggs were way too runny. The only jelly packets offered were grape and mixed fruit, which is a travesty as there was no strawberry. We wished we had gone somewhere else for breakfast. read more

First of all, the food we are here was delicious. The establishment looked clean and was quite convenient in our quest for a low-key dining experience. I mean, I had a 4 year old with me so I was really just looking for a fast, color crayon friendly place with a good kids menu. They didn't disappoint. The menu looked like they covered all the bases though I only tried the clam chowder. My son had the grilled cheese. It was good, not great; about on par with eating at IHOP or Applebee's. We placed a to go order from here for our train journey back to Anchorage. Hubby got the salmon sandwich and I a bowl of clam chowder. Both the items were amazing. The soup was just perfect after a long day of sight seeing and Hubby said that this was the best sandwich he had in Alaska. The only part that could have been better is the bowl where the soup was packed. It was not properly sealed and some of it spilled. I know it is hard to pack liquid items but a larger bowl that is three quarters full would have done the job. Since the server warned me about it, I will not remove any stars. Best meal I had during my weekend in Seward hands-down. The night before my friend and I cruised the main strip looking and looking for a place for dinner that had steak for her and fish and chips for me. We stopped by gold rush and looked at their menu and didn't see any prices next to the items which was off-putting. It was also summertime so they had prop the door open and there were a bunch of fruit flies flying around the menu so we weren't sure what that meant for the inside of the restaurant. So we skipped it and didn't think about it. When we were trying to plan for breakfast the next day someone told us that goldrush had a good breakfast. Seemed like it was the only other place in town besides the Breeze Inn which we had had the day before and weren't really that impressed. Well the Goldrush was a slamdunk I got the green machine omelette and my friend got the BLT sliders. We were both so impressed with our meals and I can still remember it to this day how tasty it was. The night before we were on a mission to find good desserts (we had dinner at the Apollo and were disappointed overall by the food and also by the lack of dessert options) and didn't found any that were satisfactory. we looked at the gold rush menu and realize that we made a mistake by passing up this restaurant the night before to look at the dessert options - - they had a chocolate torte cake and a triple berry pie. Both of which sounded amazing. Unfortunately since it was nine in the morning we didn't get dessert but are thinking that we need to make a little road trip back to Seward just to go back to the goldrush, eat their delicious food and indulge in their desserts. read more

I am a little late in writing this as we tried to eat at Gold Rush about 2 weeks ago. I experienced the same lack of service as others have commented on in the reviews posted. At first I tried to give them the benifit of the doubt and waited patiently thinking maybe the waitstaff was just inexperienced and/or way laid back. As the minutes ticked away and they would not even make eye contact with me, my patience turned to frustration. It was apparent they did not want to serve me and had no intention of doing so. Especially after a local came in after my grpup and not only got his coffee, but ordered and was happily eating his breakfast while I sat there. Gold Rush, you should be ashamed to treat customers this way. I am so thankful I got up and left. If I hadn't I would have left Seward thinking all residents were so inconsiderate and rude. Luckily I had the pleasure of eating at a number of other establishments on my trip such as Sea Bean and Apollo. These places were awesome. Everyone else I met on my visit could not have been nicer. Unless you have all day to just sit around being ignored, I suggest you steer clear of Gold Rush. I certainly will on my next visit to the area. read more

Dined here on the Fourth of July and the waitress was very friendly and the food was delicious! I got the halibut salad and had never eaten halibut before, it was great!! There was no wait here on sunday night when most other places has 30-45 min waits. Must be a well kept secret because the food was awesome! The place was clean and staff was great!
