I made the appointment for the day after Super Bowl and they were to arrive between 9:00 and 10:00 AM, texting me before they arrived. I finally got a text around 9:20 AM telling me that the technician was sick and we could schedule for any other day that week. Sounded suspiciously like a hangover to me, but whatever. When they finally got here and removed the filters, I was advised it was now going to be $50 more. I had explained that I had a small house fire inside, but we had cleaned all of the filters and now they are stained. I even asked Jeffrey if I didn't want to pay the extra money, was he gonna just put everything back together and go away? I could see by his expression that was not going to happen so there was nothing I could do. I'm an elderly woman and I already told them since it was only $149, I wouldn't even ask for a senior discount but now they raised the price so I was very disappointed. As they were working, and I came back out into my garage, I caught Jeffrey talking on the phone about my water heater and putting a sticker on it. I told him stickers were OK, but I didn't know it was that big... not only did he put a giant sticker on something he wasn't working on, but he threw the backing on the floor of my garage! When they left, I looked at the unit, and all of the lights were flashing red. At first he had said that the filters would have to dry and then plug in the face plate later, but he plugged it in immediately and it didn't look happy. I texted the workmen and got no response. Finally, the owner responded and told me to hit the reset button. There was still one light flashing bright red after I reset. I had to have my husband work on it when he got home to get the red light to go away. It was very stressful for me overall, but I guess the job did get done... time will tell. It doesn't look like they cleaned anything on my outside unit either. I hope they do better with other people. It could have been just a bad set of circumstances but being "sick" on a Monday after the Super Bowl seems weird knowing that it could be done any other day of the week so the person couldn't have been too sick.

The efficiency of the new HVAC is a noticeable upgrade from the last, a system that came with our (new at purchase--now, 22 y.o.) home. Though the system lasted us a long time, it was never the right BTU for the size of the house. The old HVAC thermometer was around 6 or 7 degrees off. Plus, there were always cold (during winter months) and hot (during summer months) spots at the farthest corners of the house. Now, the uniformity of the temperature throughout the house makes it seem like a new and improved home. Hopefully, this will last a very long time. We are only 7 weeks out from the fresh install. Efer (owner) was very knowledgeable. He was communicative with my questions via text beforehand, and Alec was very informative and gave me the quote at the beginning of this project. My review is fairly long, so the TLDR version is: You would be insane to hire any other HVAC company without at least getting a quote from Active Heating and Cooling first. When I started looking for an HVAC company to replace my old gas furnace with a mini-split system, all the big companies that spend a gazillion dollars on advertising were, of course, the first ones to come to mind. I am a little leary of these big companies because I know that they have to pay for all that advertising somehow. So, I called one of the advertising-heavy companies at the recommendation of my sister, who had had a good experience with them. I also called a couple other much smaller companies that had high ratings on Yelp and Google just to get an idea of what the breadth of estimates might look like. I actually ended up getting Active's estimate first just based upon availability, and theirs seemed to be pretty reasonable. They recommended 2 exterior compressor units and 4 interior head units to cover my house, which made a lot of sense. The next estimate I got was a few thousand dollars higher, and for less equipment. This company recommended only 1 exterior compressor unit and 3 interior head units, which would have likely left my main floor lacking in both heating and cooling capabilities. The third company that gave me an estimate was the big-brand one that spends a ton on advertising, and it was very apparent in the quote. This company also recommended only 1 exterior compressor unit and 3 interior head units. Their estimate was 49% higher than Active's and, again, this was for less equipment. When I told them what Active had quoted me, they called their HQ and knocked off $10,000 on the spot. This just tells me that their first quote was padded with massive profits for them. In summary, Active Heating and Cooling knocked it out of the park and I could not be happier with my new mini-split system. In fact, I have already recommended them to several neighbors and friends and one of them is already on the calendar to get mini-spits later this month! I highly recommend that you call the big guys to see what they would charge you but, ultimately, you'll probably end up choosing Active just like I did.

tldr - if it's related to HVAC, call the installer of your HVAC system if possible…read more I called Green Bear to take a look at an HVAC system (on second floor) that was leaking water on the 1st floor ceiling (due to AC condensation). They sent someone over, who didn't really open the HVAC system panel much. I didn't seem confident that this would fix it. But they recommended to fix the drain pan inside the evaporator coil box, which they said was much more expensive. For clearing the drain pipe and gluing a loose pipe, which didn't actually fix the main problem, they still billed me $300 - diagnostic fee ($99) + 1 hour ($199) - (there's a 3% credit card fee, but they accept checks) 4 or 5 hours later, there was dripping again. I ended up calling Bob's, they sent 2 technicians who knew what they were doing (they opened the panel properly), they found and fixed the issue - it did not involve replacing a drain pan. Bob's only charged me the diagnostic fee of $175 and did the job right (compared to $300 that Green Bear charged)
