I simply love this place. It's local, convienant and has all the fresh produce I need. Further, it's full of stuff to experiment with. Does it have everything? What store does!? This place reminds me A LOT of R-N Market in Fresno. The entrance and a little bit of the layout is pretty similar. I'm pretty glad Gold Valley Supermarket opened up since Union really needs an Asian market--Barangay and Casa Manila don't count as they carry primarily Filipino products. Gold Valley carries much more. There's a nice selection of Japanese products, although most of it is candy and snacks. Most of the brands are well known and/or popular. If you're looking for common Japanese goodies and kitchen accessories, you could probably find them here. As Florence C. mentioned, there is a wide variety of Filipino groceries available here, much more than Kam Man (which I can confirm). The selection of Vietnamese and Korean goods was relatively smaller, however, like most Asian supermarkets in New Jersey. You could find common mixes and pastes for most dishes, but it's limited to that. The produce has two sections, one in the middle and one on the right side of the supermarket near the entrance. Quality wise, it's a lot better than East West Market in Bloomfield but a notch below Kam Man. However, considering that this supermarket opened up only recently, I'm sure it'll get better. There's a large frozen foods and refrigerated foods section, along with a sizable seafood area (next to the frozen foods area). One thing I don't like, however, is the number of non-Asian products. There are way too many bags of chicken nuggets, frozen TV dinners, and other frozen items. The bakery and hot food section doesn't seem to be ready yet, but a few breads and pastries can be bought. They aren't baked in store, though, but I'm hoping it's something that will happen later this year. Gold Valley has a lot of potential. Maybe a month or so of work, upgrading, and advertising and this should be a much nicer supermarket. I lived in Singapore for 6 years, so finding Golden Valley made me so happy. I love to cook a wide variety of asian food and this supermarket stocks everything I need including Japanese and Vietnamese. I now do the bulk of my shopping here as it stocks a great range of non asian produce as well. A great place for herbs and spices as well as fresh vegetables. So excited!! Had a Bahn Mi (Vietnamese sub) --- so good! The bread is super fresh and crunchy, the veggies are fresh and delish, and the pate and meat are awesome!!!! Sooooo gooood!!!! Gold Valley Supermarket - Two words, Banh Mi --- so good!!!! - Grocery Near Me - Springfield, New Jersey

Gold Valley Market replaced the old Seabra in the small strip mall next to NY Sport's Club on Morris and Mountain Ave. I've been searching for an Asian market nearby so I didn't have to go all the way to Mitsuwa, H-Mart or Kaman to get a few staple ingredients, and recently found this place. I've only visited once and you can pretty much buy your typical Asian ingredients among sauces (soy sauce, mirin, sesame oil, dashi, miso, Asian marinades, etc), snacks, noodles, fruits + vegetables (Japanese sweet potatoes, purple yam, bitter melons, among other things that I don't even know about). Since it's my first visit, it was a little difficult to find certain things especially if there's no English translation on the packages but I do tend to take my time at any grocery. They mostly have Chinese groceries here, some Filipino, Korean and Japanese (not nearly enough though to my dismay). They do have a lot more Filipino foods than I expected but I have to also recommend the Seabra at Five Points in Union (on Galloping Hill Rd) for that. read more

At first I could get devastatingly cheap ataulfo mangoes here, but then they got more and more expensive, even before mango season was over. Oh, well. It's still cheaper than whole foods, and closer than Edison. They also sell sheet masks! The Korean brands are very pricey (by my standards), but their prices for My Beauty Diary, Tsaio, and My Scheming (Taiwanese brands) are extremely competitive with anything online. Unfortunately it's not a full-blown Asian-beauty selection (you're better off in Palisades Park or Edison or online) but the price on the masks is awesome and again, the location is convenient. Sometimes I don't come in here, because I know I can't resist buying a box of My Scheming. So they FINALLY (!!!!) opened the hot food section, which is ultimately what will win my loyalty away from Kam Man. Okay, so: YAY BANH MI. The banh mi at Kam Man kinda suck. I've only tried the chicken one, but it was killer, and my mom volunteers that the "baked pork" one is equally high quality. I think these are also significantly better than Baguette Delite in Edison. They also have baked buns (roast pork, hot dog, coconut, pork sung, etc.) brought in from Grand China in chinatown. THIS IS AWESOME, I missed good Chinese bakeries so hard because there are literally none up here. Kam Man's bakery also kinda sucks, sorry. The fresh dim sum (both the deep fried and the refrigerated) were excellent. Shout out to the fish ball -- it looked a lot like a matzo ball, and actually kind of tasted like "Chinese fish matzo ball." That's great, I love fish and matzo balls. Highly recommend. They were out of Vietnamese iced coffee, so I tried the hot coffee instead (not vietnamese, but maybe has some cafe du monde in it) -- I was surprised by how good it was. I haven't tried the "3 entrees on rice" special yet. I know it's a smaller space than Kam Man, but it's too bad they don't have any tables or counters to sit down and eat. I live in Elizabeth. I typically go to the Asian Food Market on Route 22 in North Plainfield. My friends in Union suggested I try The Gold Valley Supermarket because of the closeness to my home instead of taking the 15 mile trek. What a disappointment. This place is not only filthy, but the vegetable/meat/seafood sections were bare! Really? I went to buy a quart of milk. The expiration date was for the next day. Really? Never again. This market has an amazing variety of fresh and frozen fish,meat,poultry, frog legs, and exotic and basic produce. I have purchased dragon fruit,mangoes, papaya,mushrooms, long beans and always have received good quality items. The aisles are neatly arranged and are stocked with every imaginable condiment, kitchen supply, nuts, and dried fruits and herbs. They also stock vegetarian staples like flavored Seiten and tofu. I have been shopping at this store at least 2x a month ever since it opened. It is near my house in Millburn and I find it convenient though I would rather shop at H-Mart. Past Saturday h/ever left a bad impression and I think I will most likely stop shopping here.. What I normally get is Korean instant noodles, some packaged tofu and fresh salmon or shrimps. I usually by pass the vegetable isle since I think pricing is very expensive and not really that great looking vegetables.. Sometimes when I am desperate I will buy kim-chi but the two brands they carry are really not that great but as I said I will pick one up if I 'm too strap for time to go to H-Mart. Kim-chi here isn't great b'cos this is a Chinese grocery store and though kim-chi is getting more popular I do not think they can move this product fast enough since what I get from here is usually sour/ old, meaning beyond the 3-5day freshness when kim-chi is freshly made and best to eat. But I accept this and choose to buy it time to time. But past Saturday when I was in the fish department to pickup fresh salmon, I paid close to $10 a lb for "wild caught". Unfortunately when I cooked it 3 days later, I noticed the salmon I got was not wild caught but perhaps farm raised. It also smelled old. I have been cooking/ eating salmon for a very long time so I know but I was really disappointed that they charged so much money for old fish that wasn't even 'wild-caught' as they claimed. When I ate actual wild caught salmon, it had much better flavor as well as coloring more intense 'salmon' pink color.I'd eaten farm raised also so I can tell it was farm raised, not wild caught. Not only that the day I was at the store, they were selling 'live-frogs' which really freaked me out. They were these big black frogs all sitting in a bottom of a wooden bucket ready to be slaughtered. I am not a vegetarian and I shouldn't be judgmental but it just seemed cruel.. I think that was the last straw. One time I was buying nori wraps here, the packaging was clearly eaten up by a mouse or a rat but I figured most grocery stores have infestation due to all the food. But after seeing the frogs, I just do not think I can shop here. read more

Update: Their hot food section has been running for a few months now, and they regularly have the roasted duck hanging in the window. They also have thin marinated pork ear which I can inhale but prefer to crunch on. The rest of the selection varies, though there is usually some fried fish and there's always rice, of course. They have 12-oz plastic containers with freshly cut fruits which is really convenient considering the size of some fruits (e.g., jackfruit). Their stock is much more consistent now. Some useful items: frozen shelled edamame is more convenient than fresh, frozen shephard's purse is MUCH more convenient than fresh, there's frozen kalamansi concentrate that makes a refreshing glass of juice instantly. I've been able to cook a wider range of dishes from across the Asian continent by virtue of their stock alone. --- Compared to other east Asian markets in the area, it is more well-lit, sanitary, spacious, and friendly. Its biggest strength is the fish counter, with a wide variety of fresh seafood and seasonal deals. Following that is the meat counter, with all the regular bits and the funny bits. There is frozen thin-cut beef, pork, and lamb for bulgogi/hotpot/etc. on an end cap and opposite that there's a self-serve end cap where you can get fish tofu, meatballs, etc. to complete your hot pot. Besides the standard chicken, beef, pork, there is rabbit, duck, and black chicken (silkie). There are no window ducks; you have to prepare them yourself. The produce is well-curated, a mix of seasonal Asian fruits (Asian pears, mango, papaya) and veggies, a bewildering variety of Chinese greens (___ Choy, saute them with garlic!), some American standard veggies (tomatoes, potatoes), all sorts of mushrooms. There are some non-regular produce--this week they have tomatillos, as well as cute Indian eggplant. They discount well-ripe produce, near the back of the produce section, which is great if you like sweet (and soft) tomatoes. Sometimes the labels for the produce are non-standard so you may need to know what something looks like (Jalapenos were labeled "Suntan Pepper" for a few months, which refers to bell peppers). There is an aisle with housewares and cleaning agents, with joss paper/hell money capping it. On the other side there is bath and beauty. The rice aisle has pretty much every Asian variety, long, short, brown, jasmine, glutinous, etc.. Lots of frozen dinner options, dumplings, Asian ice cream flavors, mochi ice cream, etc.. The snack aisle is my favorite aisle. Everything from Filipino Jack n Jill to Japanese Calbee and Korean Saewookkang, and of course Pocky at the end cap. They seem to still be getting the hang of ordering new stock, as some of my fave snacks disappear quickly. The sauce aisle is amazing; many condiments and usually a few brand and size options for the same ones. Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Filipino are well represented. Drinks are on the left side near the meat and fish counters. Everything from seltzer to aloe to smoked plum, as well as insta-meals in a can, and several Asian energy drinks. There is a good selection of bread: Portuguese rolls, hard rolls, pan de sal, and various Asian pastry bread. There are Chinese buns from the hot food counter that are pretty good. The prices are fair. They can't beat large market chains on certain things like breakfast cereal and volume commodities, but they more than make up for it with the seafood and sheer variety of food. It's my guilty pleasure on Saturday and Sunday mornings. I get a beautiful dragon fruit, a mix of hot ready to eat dim sum, a tofu dish that is just barely mild enough for me not to cry, instant ramen that I can't get anywhere else and their sesame ball with black bean paste is awesome! And I like getting my lottery tickets there too. I will say that their prices were a little off when they first opened but I think it's better now. I also like Kam Man both on rt. 10 and on rt 1 but Golden Valley is a lot more friendly and closer. read more

Love the Korean rice cakes that I buy here, there is one nice cashier the others can kick rocks. I still for the life of me can't understand why this store has a funny smell, I will tolerate the smell for the delicious rice cakes I can get from here. Checked it out after hearing about it from my friend normally I go to kam man. The place is def not as big. As kam man and doesn't look as appetizing seem rather old. But I was able to find live crabs for 6.99 bc kam man ran out there's were 4.99 maybe they knew the other place ran out so ok to make pricing a bit higher. I did see they hv a sign for Paris cafe a Vietnamese sandwich place that is popular in ny but I wonder if it is the same or if they ripped off their poster. Came here many times since it's closer to me than the one in Edison. Most canned foods are almost 1 year expired. Breads are moldy. Vegetables and fruits are not fresh almost half are moldy. Complained to the owner but never taken care of. Bought fresh coconut on shell that are black and smelled so bad twice, I had to bring back to let him know that I wasn't lying. I rather go somewhere further to get fresher food than come here. read more

Came to New Jersey to visit for a bbq, even though I am visiting from New York there isn't one centralized place where I can find multicultural items. This place has it all in one spot. The place isn't packed which is an awesome feat and it has everything and more than what I was looking for. Chinese, Korean, Philippino, American so much in one supermarket is near impossible find. The staff is super nice no attitude willing to help with all your needs. Will definitely be visiting this supermarket every time I visit. read more

This is probably my favorite asian market in the area. Fruits and vegetables are variable and fresh. Noodle soups too. Recently they started to sell hot food in store, gonna try next time. I can't say much about prices b/c haven't compared to other stores much. It's reasonable but not so cheap. I like it being international. It also has a lot of things that sell in CVS, Walmart too, which means I dont have to go to other stores and it saves my time. Also sell bread, cheeses, cereals, milk, etc. Anyway, it's a good store and I like it a lot. read more

OMG. Today was my first visit. Simply amazing. Russ and his crew took a while to open the former Seabra market. First thing I'll do now is buy a cookbook of Chinese and other Asian recipes. From their amazing fruits and veggies, to their full, huge aisle of prepared dumplings it will take a month to understand the selections. Not for the faint at heart... some of their fresh meats and seafood are truly incredible. From the live striped bass and other fish (in salt water tanks) , to the out of the box selections of fresh meats, this place rules. I was a bit taken back by the fresh pork uterus and the pork stomach, (probably the same pig), it makes me curious. Their prices on all fresh veggies, meats and fish are mostly better than any Shoprite or other major chain, I was also impressed that the majority of customers there were Asian. Wo better to know a good thing. Their staff as well is primarily Asian. You may not always get an English speaking worker, but what the heck, it makes it all the more an interesting experience. When this market first opened up I was so excited. The food was fresh and the environment was clean. Now I keep giving it another chance because each time I go I'm disappointed. Too many concerns; There is an odor when you walk in , no one speaks English , even at the curtesy counter and on my most recent trip the chicken I bought there was was bad. This is by far the best Chinese supermarket around the area. it has a lot to offer. it has bubble tea, Vietnamese sandwiches, coffee, tea, produce, seafood, meat, grocery, bake goods, and cooked food. It is very spacious and clean. I tried their Vietnamese sandwich and tea. it is very good. I also tried the glutinous rice balls(sweet and salty kind) very good. It offers Dim Sum on weekends and holidays. Prices are very competitive. I love it because it is much cleaner than most Chinese market. the staff speak English and Cantonese. read more
