Golden Bear is a great local spot for breakfast and lunch. Tucked into a strip mall on Starkey Road, it's not fancy. But the food is good! Even on a late Friday morning, every one of the 25 tables was full, as was the seating at the counter. The clientele is mostly locals, and it's the kind of place where everyone is known by name. An awful lot of "I'll have the usual" was overheard. I tried the gyro, feta and tomato omelette. It's a 3 egg concoction with generous hunks of flavorful gyro meat. Chunks of feta melted as it cooked with some diced tomatoes. A great combo, we'll executed with eggs fluffy and not scorched. I chose a fruit cup instead of potatoes or grits. Freshly sliced, this consisted of watermelon, orange, banana, cantaloupe and grapes. Worth the upcharge. Always great to support a local owned business - and this is a good one! Beary Good Golden Bear has been around for many years and they have a lot down pat. The place is usually busy and the staff is efficient. The coffee is good and the eggs are, well, eggs. The French toast is pretty good. The downfalls are the grits and ham. The grits are a little more flavorful than most similar restaurants, but the texture is soupy. Grits should be drier and slightly crunchy. The ham is flavorful but has a spongy texture. Prices are OK. I still can't find a breakfast place in central Pinellas that gets everything right. read more

This spot has become a repeat choice for lunch during the week. They serve breakfast all day too so having breakfast for lunch is a bonus for me! Their turkey club is made with actual turkey not cold cuts so it's really hearty. The BLT could have used a tad more "B" to make it feel substantial - I kinda felt like the main meat of my sandwich was missing. The omelets are HUGE. (Said in my best Fuccillo voice haha) Service is always friendly even though they seem to be busy from open to close. 8/16 update We've stopped in a few times for breakfast. The ONLY time I've been disappointed is when the line to get in is out the door and down the sidewalk. Regardless of the wait, the service is awesome and the food is sooooo delicious! This time I had the breakfast quesadilla with home fries. I couldn't shovel it in fast enough. The egg, onion, cheese, tomato and bell pepper ratio was spot on. It was cooked perfectly. My husband had chipped beef on toast. I would not DARE try to put my fork in his plate to steal a taste. I would have drawn back a nub. We absolutely love this place and the staff. They are all masked up, partitions are on every booth and they sanitize pens used to sign receipts after every use. I appreciate their concern for OUR health and safety. They are all so pleasant and sweet. read more

Went on a Monday so it wasn't that busy. Service was friendly and they kept the coffee coming! I ordered a healthy omelet (but no egg whites) and rye toast. Hubby got the feta and spinach omelet and added chicken. He said the chicken was well-seasoned. We both got hash browns and they came out crispy just like we like them. My omelet tasted meh for lack of a better term. I added some salt and pepper thinking that would help. It did slightly. Not sure what it was- maybe the large amount of feta all clumped in the middle of the omelet. I did not enjoy my meal as much as hubby did. What a hunt for good breakfast food today, after 3 failed attempts at other establishment we landed at Golden Bear. We got here around 10:30 and were given a buzzer for the wait, after 5 minute we were sat by a wonderful amazing hostess (didn't catch her name) red headed and full of spunk. We were then served by another amazing woman (sorry no name again) either way she was amazing and funny. I ordered the spinach and Fetta and added chicken. This was by far one of the most delicious chicken omelette I have had in a long time. My partner had Biscuit and gravy and it was not what He expected and i can't say if I liked it or not. He even said it tasted like it was canned. The rest of his meal was delicious. The corn beef hash was excellent and worth the try. The hash browns were exactly how they should have been. I asked for onion on mine and my only critique would be to cook the onions a little more, they were almost raw. The service was exceptional with every single employee that passed by the table asking if we were okay or asking if we need anything. This is a place I will revisit again. Evidently has been under new ownership since last June. Food is still very good and hot and fresh. They have eight breakfast specials for under five dollars which is amazing- and no time limit. Very good informal place for breakfast or lunch. Typical coffee shop type of menu. Food was very fresh and portions were a good size. And the prices are very reasonable. I had a chef's salad. All of the ingredients were very fresh. And it was a very filling meal. Sophia had a breakfast sandwich with egg, cheese and bacon with a slight upcharge for fresh fruit on the side. She loved it. Iced tea (both sweet and unsweet offered) was good and reasonably priced at $1.95. You can tell Golden Bear has loads of repeat customers. The servers seemed to know everybody. This was our second visit here. The first time we had lunch. We ordered a turkey club with fries and a grilled cheese sandwich with fries. The turkey was carved in house and was delicious. The grill cheese was ok. On our second visit here we ordered breakfast to go and had a bacon, egg, and cheese croissant sandwich with hashbrowns and scrambled eggs and cornbeef hash. We ordered an omelette, French toast, meat lovers skillet, blintzes, biscuits and gravy. The gravy was smooth and creamy in the biscuits And gravy. The French toast had a slight crisp with a cinnamon flavor. Grits were creamy. My niece had the ham and cheese omelette and this thing was bigger than a burrito. She could only eat half. The home fries are seasoned great and so tasty. Lack of salt though. She couldn't finish hers either I had the blintzes. The filling was just right not too sweet and creamy. There was plenty blueberry sauce just enough to finish the last blintz. The coffee was good no bitterness. Family friendly, the waitress was so friendly and looks like she loves working their. The prices are amazing! I'm trying lunch next time!! What a great place to have breakfast! My girlfriend and I love to visit various small, locally owned restaurants. We've noticed that they offer better customer service, a better product, and not to mention, they do so at a much better price! And I'm here to say, this place met all three of those in spades! Our waitress was extremely attentive and was patient with us while we looked over the menu. My girlfriend got the Steak and Eggs, both of which were cooked exactly to the temp that was requested. I went the healthier option (you know how it is, you gotta watch your figure) and chose the Healthy Omelette. Both were great and taste, and both were a great value. As I mentioned earlier, everything about this place was fantastic, and I will most certain return in the future, as well as recommend it to as many people as I can. The entire staff from the bus boy to owner/manager are all very friendly and attentive. The booths are very comfortable and restaurant very clean. The decor is cool looking too, with every kind of Teddy Bears you can imagine decorating even the ceiling. I had the French Toast and it was very tender and delicious...Great breakfast selections.
