Mediocre service and mediocre pizza. They must have brought their team from their San Francisco location, because the attitude I received was NOT friendly. At all. If I am being honest, I really only heard about Golden Boy Pizza about two years ago when they were mentioned on a KQED piece on Bay Area pizza but since that time, I have read up a lot about them. I learned that it's essentially the "Cheeseboard pizza equivalent" of the city but given that I don't live in SF, I had bookmarked this place to try at some point in the future when I was up there. I then learned through a Yelp email piece on pizza along the peninsula that Golden Boy also had this San Mateo location, which is much closer to me so I decided to visit and finally try this pizza. A common theme amongst a fair amount of the comments for Golden Boy whether on social media or even Yelp was that it was overrated and I definitely agree. I want to be clear that the pizza wasn't bad but it did not impress me in the way that I expected given the reputation. The pizza is said to be its own "San Francilian" style, which (based on what I saw firsthand) means Sicilian mixed with a little bit of Detroit. Granted, I don't see a lot of Sicilian style pizzas so I will give them credit on that front but otherwise the pizza really didn't blow me away. The clam pizza was definitely unique and delicious and interestingly, I may have given this place five stars if I only had that one. However, I always evaluate a place as whole and the other pizzas were just okay. In terms of general notes, this place is essentially a ghost kitchen off the beaten path so it's pretty much pick-up only. As other people have mentioned, they only do whole pies and not by the slice. Like I have said, the pizza here is good but definitely not outstanding in the way that I expected. I would definitely make a note of this place as one of my go-tos for pizza if I lived in the neighborhood but given that I live in Mountain View, I will probably not be rushing back anytime super soon. read more

Ordered takeout here. Was pleasantly surprised! WAIT: nonexistent. Went in, they grabbed my order, went out. FOOD: pretty good! The crust is thick, but not too thick in that it kind of drowns out the toppings, ya know? The ingredients taste quite fresh too. Also, the portion sizes are decent. I ordered a pizza cut into 4 slices. I think that size is good for 2 not too hungry people, or 1 quite hungry person. Will come back! read more

Detroit style pizza. Whole pies only, no slices here. We got a small clam and garlic and a combo pizza. Very nice cheese pull when you bite into it. The clam and garlic was very garlic and parsley forward. The combo was legit too. Love the fluffy focaccia crust and the end was nice and crispy. We enjoyed both of them. Located next to the freeway near a whole bunch of auto body shops. Very random location where people seemed to call in their orders for pickup. They had a couple of outdoor bistro tables outside that we took advantage of so we could dig in while it was fresh and hot! read more

We had a tournament and the friends got golden boy~ My favorite continues to be the garlic and clams followed by the combo pizzas. Each slice is flavorful and delicious. I realize I could eat 8 slices in a single sitting lol. Been meaning to try this place when in the area & finally had a chance running errands there recently. Had my sights on the clam pizza but they only do full pies & I knew we couln't finish the hole pie there. So we ordered our small "both" with sausage & pepperoni was awesome! 12/14/2025 Came here per friends insistent recommendation. There was only a couch seating inside for you to wait for your order to be made and two outdoor table/ chairs. The shop is pretty small and it's basically Togo. For this location, you can't mix b match w the small pizza size. And they don't sell by the slices. Small: 9x 13". 4 slices Large: 13x18" 8 slices. We ordered the clam garlic to share between the two of use. Honestly I was very skeptical since who puts clams on pizza. But per my friends insistence. We ordered it. And I LOVED it. It is the weirdest and tastiest combo. And the cheese.... Was so good. I got this really great cheese pull and honestly. I can't wait to go again. Pizza took a bit to bake. Acceptable, very "wet" soggy pizza - flavor is really good I just don't think this style is for me - Sicilian/Detroit style 1 made me think of my kid's elementary school pizza on Fridays - don't get me wrong the kids love it and so did we, the teachers - but not my first choice when paying $$$ at home - 2 large (pepperoni and combo) for $100 with tip I don't know, it's fine. They are to to only and their location is right next to the freeway. Parking is limited but you can just pull up to the curb and quickly pick up your order. Called in to place my order and said it was going to be around 20 minutes. In just 15 minutes, it was already ready! The pizza itself is SO GOOD. Great tasting clam and garlic pizza! San Mateo only has the square pie version but I think I prefer that over the round. The texture of the dough is very thick and fluffy. The clam/garlic pieces on top give it great flavor. Highly recommend checking this place out and call ahead so that it's available when you come in to pay. Golden boy pizza never disappoints! After having tried the North Beach location a few times, we were happy to finally try the location much closer to us (a little too close honestly, it's dangerous!). Placing an order was easy, we called around 545 on a Friday evening and ordered a large pizza, half clam half combo for pickup around 6:30. The place was easy to find and a simple storefront inside with parking - they only do to-go orders, no inside seating. Even though it was takeout, the pizza lived up to our expectations. The crust is thick and the toppings generous (my personal favorite is the clam). Highly recommend hitting them up if you're craving pizza thats a little different, or just truly delicious! read more

I've been waiting to try Golden Boy for the looongest time as a lover of garlic and clams! Their pizza tastes like the perfect kind of focaccia bread. Super fluffy, not too greasy. We ordered half of a garlic/clam and pepperoni large pizza. It came with 8 HUUGE slices and I ended up getting full off of one. The garlic/clam tasted super unique and I loved how strong the garlic was! The pepperoni was also good, but I felt like the pepperonis themselves were a little too salty for me. The crust and bread had the perfect texture. We ended up freezing the rest and they reheated perfectly, with the same texture and taste as when we initially had it. This is probably the most reasonably priced pizza in the bay (which still blows my mind as an east coast transplant), so we wanted to give it a try. This is a focaccia style dough and they have some pretty exotic combinations. We opted for the sausage pizza and it was ready quickly. A large pizza was enough for 2 adults and 2 kids with some leftover. The pizza was fine, but a bit underwhelming. The flavors were kind of bland and the sausage was these dense balls in a grid that meant you got one or two bites out of each slice that had the topping. Golden Boy Pizza is an institution in the Bay Area. The pizza is consistently good and the service is great! It's a pick only pizza restaurant and has limited parking. The square Detroit-style slices are delicious! The ingredients are fresh and their sauce is spot on. I love the old posters and stickers all over the walls. Amazing Pizza!! They have multiple locations now but they're all basically the same. Quality pizza for a good price. I typically go for pepperoni/sausage or combo. Their pizzas are rectangles and you can get a 9x13 or a 13x18. You can call and order in advance but if not, it'll only take 15-20 minutes to make. I've been to the SF location and this one is just as great! The only difference is that you can only order small or large pies. I opted for the half (pepperoni/sausage) and half (combo). The pepperoni sausage- you can taste the marinara more. I love how crispy the pepperonis are and the sausage is huge! The cheese has amazing cheese pull and isn't too heavy ratio. The breading was fluffy get crispy on the edges. It was like focaccia bread. The combo was the same but with vegetables (zucchini, tomatoes, mushrooms). I wish the tomatoes and zucchini were diced instead of sliced just bc it would slide off my slice and it holds a lot of juice. Pizzas were prepared fresh so the wait was about 20 mins. One of the best pizzas out there. Their service is pretty fast if you walk in and order. It was about 15-20 minutes wait. 1 slice is pretty filling and can eat up to 2. Wife saw Golden Boy on TikTok so she's been bugging me to go. We went by the SF location but they had a line down the block. So, one Saturday afternoon we drove over from East Bay to San Mateo to try it. Called ahead and ordered a large combo and a small garlic and clams. This location is take out only so we took it to the park a block away to eat. Hot and fresh its soooo good. The cheese was the bomb and the topping - sausage, pepperoni, tomato and zuchinni were all so fresh. They say the large feeds 3-4 at least. Gonna have lots of leftovers. Been here 3 times now and first time was very good, 2nd not consistent & not as good from first. Tonight was the 3rd, and I was super disappointed!! The pizza was terrible. They added onions, which I don't like on pizza, the dough was somehow cooked outside but raw and gummy inside and there's usually a little cornmeal on bottom of crust which adds a nice extra crunch and that was missing. Just an all around bad night to get a pizza apparently. The onions I picked off and decided to just deal with it but when the flight was gummy that's just unacceptable and not appetizing.
