Our family has been getting carryout from this small restaurant for years. What it lacks in atmosphere is made up for in the quality and taste of the food. All of the entrees that contain vegetables have a nice assortment and variety of them, not just a few scattered bits of broccoli and onion. The protein, be it chicken, pork, tofu, etc. Is plentiful and of good quality. The dumplings are huge and some of the best in town, and their other appetizers such as egg rolls, spring rolls, fried wontons, and crab rangoon are all above average as well. A few negatives - some of their fried items can be on the oily side. Don't get the egg foo yung unless you want to use a whole roll of paper towels trying to blot the grease out of them. The soups are also a bit lackluster. They're o.k., we've just had better. The prices can't be beat! This is hands down my favorite casual (Americanized) Chinese take-out joint in the Columbus area. Their steamed dumplings aren't just frozen gyoza- you can tell someone made these with love. A fluffy hand-pinched wrapper holds the absolute most savory minced pork filling. The dipping sauce is a delicate balance between soy sauce and black vinegar. Even the stir-fries are amazing- no soggy ingredients or overly sweet sauces (even the sweet and sour sauce is actually really good.) You can easily identify individual ingredients (like telling chicken apart from mushrooms.) This is my go-to for eggrolls. They are crispy, decently sized for the price, and the veggies aren't bitter or mushy. I often end up sitting in the car eating one because I just can't wait to get home. (Pro-tip: order 2.) I keep saying I'm going to take pictures, but the food vanishes too fast. With the cold weather, I've been ordering soups. Every single soup has been great. The wontons are generous. The egg drop soup is silky. The hot and sour is just perfect- again, nothing overcooked and silky broth. The staff is super polite. From time to time you might interact with a junior staff member, and despite his age, he is as incredibly professional and efficient as the adults. Call ahead and place an order anytime. Went for takeaway lunch today. Ordered Singapore Chow Mei Fun (a 'combo'-type dish), Veg Egg Roll & Fried ("Crispy") Noodle (a side item). Was disappointed in the size of the noodle bag (small!) which tasted 'pre-made'; a different place on Riverside Drive has large bags ($2.50, so worth it), which tasted more in-house. SCMF was very good; not too spicy (for me); only ate half, and feel full enough. Was also disappointed at amount of S/S sauce for my egg roll; courtesy cup was filled only half-way. The food was really good and was a rather good deal. No egg rolls with lunch special, but you have a choice of rice and either soup or soda. The egg rolls were crispy and delicious, not soggy or super greasy. The wonton soup was full of flavor, so I rather enjoyed it. I've ordered the Happy Family several times and it has always been great. Lots of shrimp, beef, and chicken. I usually share with my girlfriend and we both have enough for a dinner meal and have a small amount remaining for lunch the next day. We recently got the shrimp with cashews for lunch and it was also wonderful. The restaurant isn't fancy and we usually get the food for takeout. I ordered enough food to feed a family of four even though I'm home alone, since I don't really feel like leaving the house to get food and I am not a very experienced cook. They have small and large sizes for most of the dishes, and I still feel like the small can be stretched to 2-3 meals! The fried dumplings are amazing, and I plan on eating those with my hot and sour soup as leftovers for lunch tomorrow. For the amount of fun, I find the price very reasonable. It's also very good! Even though their GPS couldn't find my address (it's pretty new), most restaurants will just refuse to deliver here. However, the lady on the phone didn't really care. I gave her a nearby address, and she told me the driver would call when he got nearby for further directions. He found my place super quickly, faster than most Uber drivers do! I've been eating at GCE for years, and I will always go back if I'm craving Chinese. As I previously stated in my tip, I consider this to be the best Chinese in the Columbus area. Hands down. Everything I've had here is amazing. My personal favorite is the general tso's. Their chicken is always perfectly cooked and just the right amount of crispiness. I also love their crab rangoons. The lo mein was also dry and chewy--the noodles were very fine, and I prefer a larger noodle with a good amount of sauce to keep the bite soft--but my co-workers rave about this place, so it might just be not to my particular taste.
