This place is the bomb. From the outside, it doesn't look special. From the inside, it looks like a dive. It was probably super nice in 1970 when they last remodeled it. So why do I like this place? The food and the service. My wife knows if we are in the area, we are picking up. They've always been polite and friendly, and the same server has always been there. She even remember my order, though it's easier when your pal steps on their foot. I definitely recommend the Fancy Tofu, a little crispy. I'm not a big tofu guy, but it's great. However another person I know that ordered the same day said it was included with theirs so they employees are lying. We had a quick meal there tonight: fried rice and Tripe Delight in Szechuan Sauce (a mixture of chicken, shrimp and scallops and veggies sauteed in a spicy sauce). We were impressed with the value and portion size ... and liked the fried rice. But we were disappointed with the flavor of the entree: It was far too sweet and salty and not anywhere near Szechuan hot. Reviewer Joe (below) is right on in his assessment that this restaurant is right out of the pre-Nixon, 50s-style Cantonese-American eateries (although without the A-B-C columns ... remember them?). While many aspects of that genre might be considered "comfort" food now ... I think the recipes and food preparation should have progressed to avoid the cornstarch-heavy, cloying sauce, such as the one in our entree. Hence I'm giving Golden Dragon 3, not 4, stars. If we lived here, we'd surely come back for the value ... and search the menu for dishes that we like better ... and probably talk the chef into upgrading their recipes. read more

I recently purchased beef chow mein and pork fried rice. Not only was the food really good, but despite being very busy he paid attention to details, making sure we had soy sauce, etc. He provided four fortune cookies and I can't recall the last time I had fresh (not stale) fortune cookies. read more

Golden Dragon is one of the best Chinese places I've ever been to. I went there quite a lot growing up and I've moved out of state but I still like to eat there whenever I'm in town. The egg drop soup is great, and I love the General Tso's Chicken and the Boneless Almond Chicken. I miss the old recipe they had for General Tso's when it wasn't so saucy, but it's still better than what I get in most places. The fried rice has a ton of flavor. Most Chinese places I've been just fry plain rice with no meat or veggies in a wok as a side, but Golden Dragon's is legit pork fried rice even though it's just a side. That's rare. I've lived in Charlotte, NC and Denver, CO and eaten at tons of Chinese places and no place in either city has topped Golden Dragon. read more

We were pleasantly surprised with this restaurant. We ordered takeout on our way through town. My husband is not a huge Chinese food fan and he said it was the best Chinese food he ever had. We ordered egg rolls, dumplings, chicken Lo mein, general Tsao chicken, and pork egg foo young. It was all excellent. My mother in law ate it all and went back for more. If I could give ZERO stars I certainly would. This was THE MOST DISGUSTING food I've ever been served anywhere in my entire life. Seriously BAD. Everything! Ordered the pupu platter - asked for spicy mustard and duck sauce - both watered down and rancid (rotted). Greasy! Bit down on rib from platter and gagged at the smell and taste. Did not eat. Kung Pao chicken tasted like it was a frozen food item and had been microwaved. The wait staff was completely clueless. Ordered a Tsingtao beer off of the menu and I was looked at like I was speaking "alien." Asked for low sodium soy and was given gluten free and told it had no sodium, ha ha. Chopsticks please? Wouldn't expect too much from local restaurant in small Midwestern town, but I've had Chinese fast food all over the country that was FAR superior. This food was seriously inedible. The only reason I didn't get up and leave was because I was visiting family in the area and they took me there and I tried to be respectful. I am dumbfounded by some of the other reviews. I order takeout from this place quite often. So often that they know my voice and know what I'll order before I do. That being said, the prices are very reasonable for the portions. I typically enjoy the moo goo gai pan and chicken noodle or rice soup; however, their wonton is good as well. Everything always tastes fresh and I cannot remember a time that I was not happy with my meal here. The egg rolls have a good flavor that seems to be distinct to them. I haven't found any that taste quite the same in my travels. Every once in a while I get in the mood for fried rice and they have an excellent fried rice plate for lunch. The flavor of the fried rice while probably a little stronger than most definitely keeps me coming back. It has a texture and consistency that I prefer even if it isn't quite authentic. read more

Been here more times. Nice place for lunch when it has been so cold. They have been very flexible. I can get a lunch combo without the egg roll and bigger soup. Good Won Ton soup. As I said in my last review, I haven't had anything bad there. The beef is not the best quality so I don't recommend that. I have had it in combination dishes like Happy Family. Portions are lunch and they give you hot tea without charging! Service is good and staff is friendly and appreciative. Fried rice is good not great but has large pieces of pork. read more

Had a very nice time here. The decor is very simple but it does it's job. At least there are fish to look at in the entrance. :) The have a full bar available, and I was shocked to see the cocktail/drinks menu as the first page on their menu...really trying to push those drinks down my throat! I had the sweet & sour chicken, fried won ton, and egg drop soup. My sister had the General Tso's chicken with lo mein and sweet & sour soup. A few nitpicks: 1) The waitress didn't seem like she has worked there for very long (or didn't care about serving sizes, when we asked her on them) and didn't have very good customer service skills at all, even splashing sauce on my hand while preparing our take-home boxes. 2) The sweet & sour soup tastes like a BBQ sauce base, and the beef in it doesn't look very appetizing. 3) The "fried won ton" on the menu (besides not being very descriptive of what you're getting) is SUPPOSED TO BE a plate of won tons with FILLING in them. These do not have ANY filling in them, so you get the wrapper with nothing inside. :\ The upsides: the food tasted great (other than the won tons and sweet & sour soup), namely the chicken in the entrees, which is chicken pieces battered with tempura (possibly, just a guess) with amazing sauce over them, served with fried rice (brown rice was $1 more). The sweet and sour sauce is the perfect blend without being too syrupy. The combo platters were around $9.15 and come with a huge freshly made egg roll and a cup of egg drop soup. Overall, the food made the experience very good, but the waitress needed a bit of help with her knowledge and presentation to us. 4/5 stars, for now. read more

Good atmosphere and great food. There are two Chinese restaurants in the small town of Fremont, Golden Dragon and Peking. The Golden Dragon is on the east side of town. The restaurant itself is smaller than Peking and, I think, has a little nicer atmosphere. The food is quite good, slightly spicier than Peking. Their soups and egg rolls are good, but they don't have the sweet dinner rolls that Peking offers, (see my review on that restaurant). They offer alcoholic beverages and have a small bar at one end. I especially like General Zhao's chicken and their sweet and sour pork. read more

Although we could dine at fancy joints or the ubiquitous "Apple-gardens," this is our favorite place. It serves very consistent Chinese comfort food. The Moo Goo Gai Pan (ask them to throw in a few shrimp) is mighty fine. The portions are generous; most people leave with a little box. For many years we have come here when we have to make important plans or decisions. Ask for a dry Manhattan; you'll not be disappointed. I hope it never changes. read more

Got the dragon steak, and it was delicious. Portions are way more than one person can eat. Definitely worth the up-charge for fried rice. Service was friendly and prompt. I like pretty much all Chinese food but this was disgusting. All the food tasted like it was made in days old grease. We had the egg drop soup and the wonton and it tasted exactly the same ( both like chicken noodle soup). The weirdest part was the crab Rangoon's dough also tasted like the chicken noodle soup. If you are in the mood for very good Cantonese-style Chinese food and are within 40 minutes of Fremont, Ohio Stop in. They serve the best Almond Chicken platter around and many other dishes as well. The soups are great (WonTon soup is my favorite) and the egg rolls are to die for (they are fresh made and you can tell). I have ordered takeout for 6 egg rolls before - they are great and heat up well later. Portions are large and unless you are very hunger when you walk in, you will take a piece of heaven with you when you go. They do have a bar, but I always get the hot tea - it is always good. I call this place to ask if the can make sweet and sour chicken without breading. Yes they say, they can. So i order. My husband picks up the food. He gets home and the chicken has breading. So i call. They tell me that it takes an hour notice for no breading. I tell them that the breading usually makes me sick. "Why did you take the order without telling me that it took an hour?" I see this as 1950's Chinese cuisine, and I don't mean that in a bad way. Huge portions with thick starchy sauces and the vegetables very well done. I don't know if the menu or decor has changed in decades, but that's what gives this restaurant its charm. There is so much to choose from that each time we go we try another entree, and someday maybe we will get through the entire menu. I've never left without taking home leftovers. So far the mu shu pork is my favorite. I hope it never changes. read more

The wonton soup, egg roll and ribs appetizer were excellent, while their almond chicken was extremely disappointing. They should have just listed: war sau gai with mushrooms or without mushrooms. The dish missed vegetables, almonds and flavor. They forgot the egg roll that supposedly comes with the dish, but brought it out when they were reminded.
