I waited for over a week before reviewing this restaurant after my "bad experience". In my entire 35+ years of dining out I've only ever felt compelled to return my food 4 times; this was one of those times. The shrimp egg foo Yung was tough, too dark, bland and barely had enough shrimp to constitute even being called "shrimp egg foo yung". I had just ordered this same dish about 2 months prior, it was good and I received 3 patties; this time I was told only 2 patties for the same price or more......really can't remember, but ordered anyway I hate to leave bad reviews and would rather speak with someone to give them an opportunity to correct the problem or at least come to an understanding, but to no avail.....Ms. Julia would rather argue. I did not come to argue. I simply wanted a resolution to what I believed to be the problem. Now I can add "poor service and an even poorer attitude" to the list. Golden Lily is a life long favorite for Toledo being in downtown forever then because of the Huntington/Glass City Center build moved to the Reynolds Road location where they brought many things like the ceiling tiles and furniture plus all the delicious recipes. They don't seem to have the business they had downtown but the food is great as is the atmosphere. You won't be disappointed. read more

This place used to be downtown on Superior by Adams. I'm guessing they moved 10 years ago and the food is pretty much the same. Typical Cantonese. Nothing exciting or different. The "new" place is in an old fast-food restaurant on Reynolds (Arby's???). It's very typical atmosphere with nothing special. The waitress was nice and things were pretty efficient. We were in and out in around 30 minutes. Anyway, went for lunch there recently and wanted some hot and sour soup. Apparently, they don't have that in the summer. Really disappointed with that. So, I skipped the soup and had egg foo young. It was fine. Nothing special, just typical egg foo young. The fried rice was OK too. If you go here, expect the typical Chinese food for this area. It's acceptable. Sweet and sour, egg foo young, fried rice, etc. If you want something Asian that's going to be way more pleasing (by a large margin), go across the parking lot to Tandoor. read more

I have been eating here as long as I can remember. Four generations of my family have come here. Restaurants dont stay open that long on accident. No one has better wonton soup, ham fried rice, sweet and sour sauce or egg rolls. When I was young and David learned I wanted to become a chef he took me into his kitchen and showed me around. He is the sweetest man. He also worked with our budgets and did family style service for my sisters and my own wedding rehearsal dinners. A Toledo tradition for Chinese food for many years. We finally stopped talking about going and went and had dinner. We were seated quickly and our waitress came right over to take our drink and appetizer order. While waiting and reminiscing with the decor which was in their old location in downtown Toledo. I noticed the business is kept very clean. Our entrees came and all I can say is that we both were happily satisfied with our dish's, just like we remembered. I've been going to this place since the early 80's. Was sad to see them close/move but, every time I come back to Toledo and they're open, I get some!! The food is FANTASTIC! And the comparison for every Asian restaurant. The service is fast and exact every time. The original restaurant items incorporated in the new place is very nostalgic and makes the environment nice. Highly impressed from start to finish. U can see from the outside this used to be an Arbys with the drive thru window still there. Go in to a totally different experience. Friendly staff who talk to you even if you are getting a carryout order. Debated the price of eating out v cooking with the very nice owner/manager while I waited for the food. Since it was close to closing time they asked us if we wanted some extra egg foo yung n shrimp fried rice. We had so much food they had to put it in a box. So we ordered crab Rangoon, wonton soup, ham fried rice, general tso chicken, spicy beef n veggies. Came to almost $40 so a little more than other Chinese spots. This is the best chinese food I have ever had. Everything was hot n fresh. I dont even like fried rice or beef but I was trying everything. Two days later the leftovers are almost as good as day 1. I ordered a chicken fried rice takeout here and while the dish had good flavor, the chicken was overcooked and dry. The dish itself wasn't that bad, it wasn't much to remember. I had not been to this place since it was at the downtown Toledo location. At that time the food was excellent, and I see that this has not changed. The food was very very good in comparison to other oriental restaurants in the Heatherdowns/Reynolds corner area. The outside was not so inviting but once you step indoors you may realize that a lot of the decor was from the previous location as well. Very clean, quiet, cool. I can't complain. Golden Lily is a Toledo, Ohio Classic. For me, a Toledo Classic is a Restaurant that was rolling in the 1970s when I was a young Lad. The Main dish that I get is the Shrimp Fried Rice with Extra Egg & Shrimp add Spicy. The Egg Rolls are Still a Solid Choice with homemade sweet & sour sauce, spicy Mustard... Last Summer, I tried the Short ribs but they were not the same sticky ribs of my Boyhood. I will give 5 Stars based on the Entrees I order... Egg Rolls, Fried Rice, Wonton Soup, Sweet & Sour Soup. This place has taken a nose dive. I don't normally write bad reviews, however this place is terrible. I still have a headache from the food I ate last night. I even called them to discuss what I thought was shrimp and broccoli but turned out to be a carton of gravy. No apologies just defended this over priced crap. Forget then Nostalgia, this isn't the same restaurant from downtown. If you want to test how you would operate with a headache and bad stomach, then by all means order! Got takeout the other night. When you walk in you notice the cleaner smell. Not an appetizing start, even though I was just getting takeout. Didn't get much - fried rice and Szechuan chicken. Fried rice was ok - it was dark so I assumed they use more soy than most other Chinese restaurants ( or me when I make it at home). Pork pieces were good. Not many veggies, though. Chicken was tasty, but not great. Plenty of chicken - some red pepper. Limited other veggies. This place was ok, and probably good if you happen to live, or are staying, close. Excellent experience. Our server explained to us his background and how his family runs the business. Very personable. He gave us the feeling that we were in his home as guests. Menu is typical of Chinese cuisine. Prices are expensive. However, everything I had was top notch. I have been coming to the Golden Lily for 25 years. Clearly a few people have no knowledge of the original Golden Lily from downtown. Same menu, same owners, same great food! They have never had anything other than Chinese-American. Take a look at who lives in Toledo; I highly doubt us Americans would enjoy 'authentic' Chinese dishes. The thought of chicken feet and octopus is kind of creepy! Their gravy for the egg foo young (huge omelet patty) or almond chicken (is not served with veggies) is absolutely amazing! Also love the cantonese chow mein (pan fried noodles served with veggies, choice of meat in a white sauce). Not to mention their daily made egg rolls are the best in town! The servers are great, knowledgeable, and accommodate your needs. The portions are satisfying. The prices are very reasonable. (Scallops are pricey on the market, therefore they cost a little more as they would at ANY restaurant). The chef/owner also comes out to chat with the customers. Upon request, he will fix something special that is not offered on the menu such as the chinese style noodle soup bowl. I'm surprised they saved all the decor from downtown and was able to bring the vibe from the old location to the present location. A lot of people think they offer a buffet. This has really gone downhill from when they were downtown. I ate here several times a month when they were downtown and was happy when I heard they were reopening. The first couple times were decent but nothing like when it was downtown. Food started declining in quality as did the service. They used to be packed at lunch time when they were on Superior and the past couple times I went there the dining room was practically empty. I think they have a new cook and different management. I would recommend driving a mile or two north down the street to BM Chen's or Wei Wei (both on Reynolds) read more

Being the FOB that I am, I was stoked upon hearing the news that Golden Lily had recently opened and made a beeline for the front doors of the establishment. My dining companion -- also an Asian food connoisseur -- and I were expecting some solid, homestyle Chinese cooking, so we were sorely disappointed to discover that the menu was highly Americanized. In fact, one of the older ladies running the place even apologized for the lack of authentic Chinese dishes and suggested we check out New Empire for real Chinese food -- a sweet and honest touch on her part. We settled for two of the Chef's specialties; he went for a dish consisting of scallops and mixed veggie, while I went for another comprised of different meats on a bed of pan-fried noodles. Enter Disappointment #2. The sauces for both dishes tasted and looked peculiarly similar. One can safely surmise that it was the same brown sauce. While not particularly outstanding, the dishes were a-okay, in my opinion. On to the slightly hefty price tags for dishes I would even consider of Chinese fast food caliber. A majority of the dishes were in the $12-$14 range, which I would consider rather steep given the quality (and possibly quantity.) That said, service was quite outstanding and efficient. The atmosphere could use a bit of an improvement, as it still exuded an Arby's vibe. Now that I've seen what Golden Lily has to offer, I doubt I'll be making my way back anytime soon. Ok so I had been hooked on another Chinese restaurant for 25 years called golden Phoenix off of Monroe street, for some reason the food just wasn't the same, so i decided I needed a new spot, and golden lily is definitely my new place ! They have the best chicken fried rice! They have big portions and great prices . Fast service for dine-in and take-out! They aren't open on Mondays which is disappointing! I guess it was downtown before? It has a big following! I've mentioned it to several people who said it was downtown and had great food from what they remember ! Beware if ordering food from here through a meal delivery app. They brought the order out to me in a box instead of a bag, insisting that was how Door Dashers prefer orders. This is untrue and was absolutely ridiculous. People do not want their food handed to them in a ripped apart box. Door Dashers have an insulated bag to put bags of food into, not elongated boxes. I've been going to the Golden Lily for about 50 years. I used to live in Monroe, Michigan and went here every Monday. This is my favorite restaurant of all time. I'm a die hard Detroit Red Wings fan and go back to Detroit every couple of years to see them play at their home rink. I ALWAYS go to the Golden Lily at least twice on each trip. My very favorite dish, which I always order when I go, is Wor Dip Har. It's shrimp prepared butterfly style wrapped in bacon and bathed in a sweet and sour/tomato sauce. I've been begging for the recipe for decades but the head dude refuses to share it with me. Any way, I'll love this place until I bite the big egg roll. read more

This is a low-key restaurant located in a dying, blue collar town where both the city itself and its inhabitants have fallen on very hard times - don't expect fine Chinese haute cuisine. Toledo people on average are not worldly and well-traveled - the restaurant has to meet the demands of its clientele. Look, if you're going out to eat in a pair of flip flops and socks with a hoodie and sweatpants on, odds are you wouldn't even know how to SPELL haute cuisine! If ya want New York or Chicago or San Francisco or any other major city and what they have to offer with regard to Chinese food, then by all means, go there - Golden Lily is located in TOLEDO, OHIO - this is the midwest, and these are blue collar people who believe that going to Canada is international travel - cut 'em some slack. To stay in business a restaurant needs to cater to its clientele. Not enough haute cuisine fans in this area, I guess. My family and I have been going to this restaurant for the past 35 years or so and we only get three things when we go there, either to dine in or to carry out - the cantonese shrimp chow mein with szechuan spices, the eggrolls, and the hot tea. Be sure to get the hot yellow mustard for on the eggrolls - DELISH! When you do go, ask for the dinner menu, as the lunch menu gives the impression that they have very little to offer in the way of dishes. The lunch menu will make you think that this place sucks, but the dinner menu is completely different. Prices for the dinner menu are a bit higher, but the portions are bigger. Atmosphere is quiet and average. They kept the original booths and dragon and phoenix ceiling tiles from the prior location in downtown Toledo. Yes, this was an old Arby's but there are no label scars. No need to make a reservation for lunch - call ahead for dinner, just to be sure. They are closed on Mondays. read more

the order was put in to request that the fried rice be made fresh and it was not. there was hard rice included as well as the onion and eggs were both a dark color eggs old and dry looking as so were the chicken. egg roll had no filling but 1 shrimp and all cabbage nothing else. when call was made to female manager she said" if you do not like do not buy no one else complain" very poor attitude and customer service horrible!! we have people in a crisis who needs disrespect from anyone especially when you are giving them your money. buyer beware read more

My husband got a beef dish and I got chicken with vegetables. The meals were very skimpy; there was only about a third of a chicken breast in my meal, the beef was a little better. Vegetables were cooked almost to the point of mush, except the ones that tasted as if they came right out of a can. We had to share a bowl of barely warm rice. Egg roll was over-fried and had little filling. But worst was the oyster sauce, which was super, super BLAND and unfortunately was the most abundant item in both meals. (After I picked out the food there was over a full cup of sauce left in my serving dish.) I gave them 2 stars because we have been there a handful of times before and our meals were good. Price point was $12-$13 a meal, which did not include soup, salad, or egg roll. Waitress wouldn't allow any substitutions. When hostess asked about the meal we told her our thoughts, but she didn't seem to care that we were disappointed. read more

their egg rolls are the best!! homemade, hot and very good, especially with the sweet and sour sauce. the meals are great for the price. the shrimp choy suey and the almond boneless chicken (gravy on the side) are our favorites!! our son came in from florida and as soon as we picked him up from the airport, he asked when can we go to golden lilly?? the food is the same as it was downtown -- fantastic!! you can't beat it or compare it to other restaurants in the area. just wish it was closer to us. we will go out of our way to eat here. luv, luv, luv read more
