I don't understand how anyone could ever like the food served here. It was so bad. We paid as soon as we could just to get out. I hope we don't have food poisoning just from the small amount we tried. They served only the fat part (the trimmings) of the beef. The veggies tasted like they were cooked in a dirty wok. It's unfortunate to have a place like this in our beautiful community. Truly disappointed and a waste of money. Now I hope they don't post our pictures on the wall and call us scam. This family owned restaurant is one of the best Chinese restaurants in SLO county. Always fast and friendly. The Hot and Sour soup is the best I've ever had! Great menu with everything you can ask for. Its style is cozy and typical. Since moving to North county we always get take out orders. We have had our share of Chinese food this in my opinion is mediocre food. We had the dinner special which included wonton soup, fried egg rolls, fried shrimp and fried wontons and in my opinion everything fried is good. The wonton soup was not good at all. The wonton in the soup Felt very hard. It comes with either white rice or fried rice (didn't taste fresh) the fried rice was not good had no flavor. My husband ordered Kung pao 3 meats which had good taste. My plate was the chow mein and noodles were not soft. The tea was good. The ambience of the place was nice felt a bit old but I like that feel. Didn't have a bad smell. The female was busy she was the only one but was very friendly. Very courteous waitress and a pleasant smile, even 35 minutes before closing. Did not feel rushed at all and was always attentive to our refills. Food was well presented and flavors were spot on. I was driving up north and got hungry. I didn't want fast food and was really tasting for Chinese food and discovered this place. It was relatively close to the freeway and I was able to order on their app enroute. I chose the Tofu Eggplant lunch. It was very tasty and able to be eaten while driving. I enjoyed it especially the small booth facing the large picture window facing the rear yard, which is nicely kept. Service was apex and intimate. I adored the traditional Chinese restaurant ambiance of the place it is ideal for an early dinner date. The food was good I wasn't especially impressed with the Phoenix & Dragon plate I ordered but that was my fault it stated it had a mild sauce, which was quickly remedied by their badass spicy mustard, let me tell you, your nose will run if you are liberal with it, and I love that. The combination fried rice was on point perhaps a little salty but I refrain from salt so my sensitivity to it is acute other my average Americans will likely enjoy it. They do not add MSG but there may be some in any purchased ingredients. I do not have a severe reaction to it but can sense it. Wow gone downhill. Ordered Kung Pao Beef on dinner. Not spicy at all and mostly vegetables. Beef so small you need microscope to see it. Soup won ton not bad. Side of pan fried noodles best thing. Also had almond chicken but where is the chicken and almonds very minimal and small. Broccoli beef with very little beef. Very expensive for miniscule amounts of beef chicken and almonds. We moved here recently from Clovis and my husband has been craving Chinese Foods. I ordered tofu with eggplant and my husband had the pork chow mein. My food was way too saucy for my liking and while I realize most people love sauce, I like my food with little sauce. I should have requested it that way. My husband ate every bite of his food and could've eaten more. Not a huge plate where normally a full order would last 2-3 meals. Excellent service and very pleasant music playing. Based on a recent visit to the Golden Moon, my wife and I need to keep looking. - Location: Convenient. Right along East Grand Avenue diagonally across the street from Ember and not too far from Grover Beach. - Ambiance: Fine. Golden Moon is in its own building designed to seem like something from China. The interior is far from fancy, but follows that same exterior theme. It felt cool and calm and the tables were spaced wide enough apart for easy conversation. - Menu: Typical of most American Chinese restaurants. Lots of choices in every category. - Food Quality: Very bland. We had 2 Egg Rolls which were cheap at $3.50, but they seemed like something from the frozen food section of a supermarket. That was followed by Egg Flower Soup ($8.95) which my wife liked, but I thought it had a strange taste. We shared a couple of entrees - Vegetable Shrimp ($15.95) and Shrimp in Lobster Sauce ($15.95). Both looked appetizing, but there was no detectable taste. Golden Moon provides condiments you can add, but good food doesn't need extra salt or pepper or sauce. I could barely tell what I was eating.....even when looking at my plate. We added a dish of Vegetable Fried Rice ($11.95) to the mix, but it was as boring as could be. The best part of the meal, at least for me, was the first pour of a large Sapporo beer. Really cold and thirst quenching. As for the food at Golden Moon - and it's actually a compliment...most of it had a clean taste. Our choices didn't have the gloppy sauces sometimes found in restaurants with the American version of Chinese food. They get an extra star for that. - Food Portions: Moderate. The quantity of food was very much in line with prices. - Service: Very friendly. The same Chinese woman who greeted and seated us also served us. She was helpful and took care of our table the best she could given what appeared to be short staffing. - Wait for a Table: None at 445 PM on a Saturday afternoon. - Price and Value: Not bad, BUT. The portions are prices were fine...and if you don't mind adding things to your dishes to make them seem tasty...the value would be fairly high. But the taste in our food must have been left in the kitchen. - Parking: More than enough right outside the door. OK, fellow Chinese lovers, let me tell you the background to Chinese food in my family. Very seldom do we go eat Chinese food out in restaurants. For our family, Chinese food is for when you're sick. As a matter of fact, back in Thousand Oaks, a headache could sometimes mean someone was sick and we could order Chinese food. There was a place there that the food was fabulous and close to us. Now you have the backstory. We moved to Nipomo and have not been able to find a good Chinese restaurant at all. At least not as good as what we had back in Thousand Oaks. But yesterday I was pretty sick. And my hubby felt like Chinese food would be the cure all. So we'd actually eaten at the Golden Moon a couple of times previously, and the food was OK. The place felt very Chinese restaurant like, it had the dragons and the Buddha, you understand, very traditional feel, etc. Onto last night. My husband called in an order. It was for a large wonton soup, king po chicken, house special noodles, and Mushu pork. The person who answered the phone told hubby the food would be ready in about 20 minutes. Hubby said no problem and got there and was then told that he must've placed an order at a different restaurant. Because they didn't have his order. He then had to prove to them that he ordered at their restaurant by showing them his call log on his phone so they could see the phone number that he dialed was theirs . Essentially, they called my husband a 'untruther' and that didn't sit well with me. But there ya go, so he went ahead and ordered the food. They gave him a pot of tea to drink, while he sat there. OK, well let it go. Mistakes happen, And I would have. However, when the food actually got to the house, I opened the Mushu pork and found that it smelled like a dead animal. Even through the box! I could smell that it was off. I've had Mushu pork before. It's usually a savory and sweet concoction of the pork with the cabbage and the sweet sauce with the pancakes. This gross mess they put into this little box was just like something that you would find on the roadkill side of the road. It made me ill to my stomach. So that went to the trash. So would I ever recommend this restaurant? No. I don't know what they served us, but I certainly think it was spoiled food. The smell was abysmal and putrid. Never in my life have I left such a bad review. I'm usually the happy kind of reviewer that says nice things about restaurants. If the restaurant is mediocre, I let it go, and I don't even do a review. But this time, I don't want people getting sick. And I hope that the health department reads my review and goes and check this restaurant out. read more

Honestly, I am shocked to see positive reviews on here. The only positive about this place was the nice demeanor about the girl behind the desk who took our order and our payment. But this was the biggest waste of $70 I maybe ever spent. Their egg flower soup is not real egg flower soup (had a red tint and weird taste), their chicken fried rice is made with a chewy dark meat, and what was supposed to be pan-fried noodles were thick and chewy. The white rice was stale as if it had been sitting there for a long time. My son liked the sweet and sour chicken, but that was the only dish that anyone in my family could stomach, and we love Chinese food. This was a complete waste of our time and money. read more

Golden moon I have passed be this restaurant many times over the years so I was expecting great food & service. It has survived where many have failed. I think they have a very loyal local client base. It is a very cute place. Unfortunately because of my experience this evening I won't be returning. Service polite but a extremely slow. I was one of four tables, all small groups. There was only one server for the dining room and the takeout. They were very busy with takeout. I think perhaps only one cook as well. So needless to say, very understaffed for a Friday night during Clam Festival weekend. The Hot & sour soup was so peppery it overwhelmed any other flavor in the soup and had none of the typical sour flavor You might expect. The Pan fried Noodles Sizzling Combination was a great disappointment. The pan fried noodles were not at all crispy but dry, tough, rubbery and burnt in places, I couldn't cut them with my fork, I even found them difficult to chew. The beef, shrimp & vegetables lacked flavor. I am sad to say the food and service was very underwhelming on all levels. I'm sorry to say, I won't be coming back. read more

What a great find while stopping in Grover Beach. I wanted Chinese food (and not Panda Express). And found Golden Moon Restaurant. A old converted house with an amazing Chinese decor inside. The dining room had a wall of hide sliding glass doors showing a beautiful garden outside. Authentic Chinese music playing inside. This is a family owned business and they are extremely sweet. Their lunch menu has a lot of choices and they Kung Pao Chicken was great. I highly recommend Golden Moon, and enjoy! read more
