We were very disappointed with our order today. I ordered house special chow mein with no carrots. When I called the guy told me I called the wrong restaurant he then tried to tell me I ordered lo-mein. I definitely did not order lo-mein. I know the difference I was married to someone from Hong Kong. We got fat noodles with NO veggies and barely any meat. We thought we had finally found good Chinese food in Santa Maria. I guess not. Ordered from here randomly one night and was very impressed! Food was hot and fresh. Food was ready within 15 minutes. I placed my order over the phone and by the time I got there it was ready. We ordered pork chow fun, beef and broccoli, and a tofu dish. All were great! Restaurant was pretty busy and had that fun Chinese restaurant atmosphere which felt nice. This almost reminds of Pearl East, really not bad experience. Easier access for the location, much better to get in and out. Customer service really good, the food is pretty decent and plenty for the cost. We ordered dinner combos. Chicken kung pao had a good little kick, chicken lo mein needed a little more something, not sure, but it was almost there, I'd say the orange chicken was just as good as Pearl East or Panda. Fried rice needed a little more of something. I'd say this meal was probably more healthier if matched with Panda or Pearl East, just that New Ocean gives more food than both those restaurants I mentioned. FOOD: Most of the items I've ordered from this place has been good. I love the lunch and dinner specials. The portion of the food fits the price. Quality is not perfect but it isn't horrid. Wishing the orange chicken or the sweet and sour items are crunchier even with the sauce. Most times it's soggy. The soups are always delicious, sometimes a little salty but like I've mentioned not perfect. Budget meals for sure and a better quality and price point than Panda. SERVICE: The owners/servers are always nice and polite. They don't try to rush you with ordering or handing you the bill. Very accomodating with orders or questions. Whenever I have my orders for delivery they are always prompt and considerate to call if there's any questions or a problem with the order in order to fix it prior to delivering which is great customer service. They have promos such as free appetizer or other food items for free if you purchase more than $35 for delivery. Pretty cool deal. AMBIANCE: It's a good sized, old feel Chinese restaurant. They have booths and tables. Not very romantic but a good lunch or dinner spot for family and friend groups. The place sometimes plays background music but not loud at all, just enough to set the ambiance of a Chinese restaurant along with the bright lights. The tables and floors are clean, might want to renew some of the booth chairs due to rips and tears but otherwise it's a decent looking restaurant. I always come back to this place. It's a great go to spot for Chinese food for a good price. The service is great and have never had any bad meal or service. Honestly, I feel like this place is underrated. I haven't been here for a very long time. Todays Experience was a little disappointing. The food wasn't served hot and the pot sticker breading was too thick. The food wasn't bad overall, but I was really unimpressed with how dirty the back of the restaurant was. HEADLINE: What a disappointment, across the board!!!! DO NOT GO!!! First time try here at this Chinese American restaurant in Santa Maria. Ordered take out this New Year's Day. Was told 15-20 minutes. Hopeful! Walked up to the store front and noticed that three quarters of the storefront windows were boarded up, along with the front door's window. WTF????? Were they expecting a hurricane, or New Year's Eve violence against crappy Chinese restaurants? I walk in and the place is completely empty ... not a single patron at 1:00 PM in the afternoon, in the rather expansive space. Got my nicely boxed order home (since I have to award a star per Yelp!, here it is) ... UGH!!! BBQ Ribs appetizer, was neither ... 0/10. It looked like dried out slices of some kind of meat, no fat, no caramelized skin or center, and an utter lack of flavor or smoke ring ... I know Char Sui ... this was not even that universe, much less zip code. Utter fail. Threw it out. Spicy Garlic Broccoli, again neither ... 0/10. Broccoli was mush, and the sauce was utterly nondescript, versus being garlicky or spicy. Threw it out. BBQ Pork Fried Rice, again, who screws up fried rice ... -0/10. Utterly dry, tasteless, and used the aforementioned imposter of BBQ Pork. Forgettable! Threw it out. BBQ Pork Egg Foo Young ... unrecognizable ... 0/10. Inch thick hockey puck patties resembling more of an overcooked hamburger than a glorious light combination of egg, sprouts, pork and luscious brown sauce. Gravy was gelatinous. Patties themselves dry, flavorless and simply WERE NOT EGG FOO YOUNG. Threw them out. Potstickers App ... Worst I've had in a long time ... 0/10. Mostly dough. The filling was flavorless and unidentifiable. Not worth the calories. Threw them out. I ordered Egg Flower Soup and Hot and Sour Soup ... both small portions. I haven't tasted either one, given my experience to date with this order, but with the above experiences, this review is irreparable, no matter how wonderful they may be. Even though the open sign was on there were no signs on the big plywood window coverings to indicate they were open We were greeted and seated by a guy who was chewing on food and some of the food was on the edge of his mouth however very helpful and friendly. I called and put my order in at around 8:44pm and was told it would be ready in 10 minutes. Although we didnt get there until 9:02pm, he was still so friendly and made sure we got everything we needed! Their chicken fried rice had bite-sized tender chunks of chicken and the flavor overall was simple and delicious. Value quality for a value price. When I called, he made sure to let me know that the crab meat in the crab wontons was imitation but it still tasted great with the sweet and sour sauce. Like my other reviews of chinese food that turns out to be strictly low-brow American fast food, New Ocean gets a lower-case "c" in "chinese." Because it's not actually representing the food of China. In 6 years of reviews, there are less than 100 yelpers who have bothered to write about the place, which tells you that the foodies steer clear. When I see other reviewers praising their "egg foo young," which looks like meatloaf smothered in brown gravy, I just shake my head in wonder. If you're into fast, salty, greasy food that won't challenge your palate, this is the place. I was the only guest and my "lunch #4" came out within 5 minutes. I got the idea that's it's not much different from a chinese buffet except that the hot containers of food are in the back and they retrieve requested items from there. Your condiments are sriracha, soy sauce, and sugar. The 3 flavors of the restaurant. The special lunch #4 was chicken lo mein, kung pao chicken, and fried rice. If you told me that the lo mein was cooked in very salty water with msg and soy sauce tossed in, I'd say, "yup." If you told me they were thawing out big bags of pre-cooked "kung pao chicken" purchased from Sysco Asian Foods division and throwing in some water chestnuts and fresh celery, I say, "that sounds about right." The fried rice was literally just steamed rice with some veg, egg, soy sauce, and msg stirred in. There was nothing "fried" about it. The place has a cool facade that someone installed at some point when they actually cared. Now they're just trying to sell whatever people are willing to eat. Then today i recently make an order for dinner time but somehow they quickly cancelled my order for no reason so I did call to them and ask why they did cancelled my order. The guy on phone say " yes we did cancelled it because we doesnt want to wait too long if no one at home" I was like wtf? New Ocean is the best Chinese food in town. In the 20 years we've been eating in to or picking up take out, the food has always been consistent. Portions are very generous. Tonight was no different. This is a family run business and they are just great. We had a great conversation with one of the owners tonight. We each ordered a 3 item combination plate. The portions are so large, we each brought home part of our meals. I highly recommend this establishment. We will continue to patronize them. Oh and in case you are wondering. This place is alright. I would say honestly, I would come back to try a different choice of meat. The chicken curry was decent, but not the best compared to places I have tried in San Francisco. The pork noodle soup was not my style kind of reminded me of pho. I didn't like the way the pork looked in the soup with the red outline. I'm not sure why it may be the way it is prepped or cooked but I'm not familiar with it so it was new to me and kind of off putting. The soup didn't really have a flavor to it. I kept adding different things but it just wasn't doing Justice. I will see everything is decently priced. I saw a family meal for 16.95 which I think is a really good deal. The one thing I will say I definitely did not like which I don't like at any restaurant is bringing a cup of ice with a can of soda instead of fountain drinks with refills but all in all I would come back to try other things on the menu the guy was very helpful and food came out fast.
