Let me preface this review by saying that I have lived most of my life in Boston, Chicago, and NYC. Chinese food in these cities is legendary. Since moving to Amherst, NH 5 years ago, my wife and I have tried several places locally and have been disappointed every time. Golden Palace was on my radar as I frequent the hardware store in the same plaza. It always looked like it was closed so I never gave it much thought. On 5/17/26 we had a friend at the house and he recommended we try this place. He told us a few years ago that it was pretty good...... We arrived around 4pm. All of the lights were off except in the very front of the restaurant. There were 3 teens at a table but no one else in sight. There was a young, friendly girl at the counter. She asked if we wanted to be seated but we were only getting takeout. While looking at the menu for about 10 minutes with my wife putting our order together, not a single person came in and not a single phone order. We considered leaving as this place seemed a little shady, but we placed our order anyway giving it a chance. Nothing fancy. One entree and a PUPU platter with a large pork fried rice. My wife commented on the way home that it smelled really good, and I agreed. We got home, unpacked it, and took our first bites. I noticed the fried rice had a fishy, like low tide fishy, taste but didn't say anything. She took her first bite and said the same to me. The appetizers had ZERO flavor and were just slightly undercooked and not very crispy. The Szechuan beef was ok. Very tender but lacking in overall flavor. Neither of us ate very much. Just enough to not be hungry anymore. Disappointed at best. It cost us $63 to basically feed the resident opossum in our yard. We won't be back. read more

We've lived in some well established areas where Chinese food is tops Boston, SFO, Dallas; so we have had some experience. Fresh and delicious. This is a very clean restaurant with a buffet Thursday through Sunday. We found this out when we stopped in for the buffet on a Tuesday afternoon. I had previously visited once and had the buffet. It was very good so decided to being my mom. Even though the buffet was not open my mom and my daughter and myself still very much enjoyed our lunch. The server was very friendly and didn't mnd that I kept adding to the menu after she left our table. Together we had an order of orange chicken, a small order of pork fried rice, large egg rolls, large spring rolls, two small wonton soups, sweet and sour sauce, two hot tea, and two soft drinks. I'll start with the meh. The fried rice was not very flavorful. OK, now the good...The hot and sour soup was excellent. The beef with mushrooms very good, flavorful, the beef was tender, and the mushrooms were fresh and plentiful. The chicken wings were tasty. The waitress was pleasant and attentive. It was a Sunday. When we ventured out for a drive to NH (Super Walmart our destination,lol!) We were in the mood for overdue Chinese buffet. Reviewed menu and thought perfect! No where on their website stated the buffet was only til 2pm. The host/waitress/server for entire place told us to review "what's left" on the buffer. It was 1:15 at this time. Went to look at what was left, not many if any apps left. One slab of egg food young (what hubby wanted) and maybe 8 sides. Orange chicken,fried rice,chop suey, and that one slab of egg foo young. Soups were bottom of barrel left overs. Food warm but I felt it was there from OPENING I passed on buffet. My hubby... I know was thinking less $$$. The buffet was inexpensive $14.99 so "why not" The menu showed many cocktails/martini/mixed drinks. The menu list (same menu list also on website)found in the resturant showed prices covered. They did not offer any of the ones listed. I could not get my dirty martini. Hubby got a Bud and I asked for Cape Codder. I ended up with combo plate. Schzwain chicken (sp?) No peanuts, could of been more sauce and spicier but overall veggies,chicken were cut perfect size and large portion. Boneless pork strips were good. Fried rice was kinda bland. When I reached over for soy sauce, I then noticed absolutely nothing on table. No salt, pepper, soy sauce. Overall clean, server doing her best serving at this time 10 tables,in/out atmosphere. The buffet is EXCELLENT! Food is always hot and they fill the food trays quickly! You never have to ask for the drink you ordered. They ask if your glass is half filled. We tried the Golden Palace takeout for the first time last night. On an academic scale, I give it a B -- good but not great. We had: Egg Foo Yong General Tso's Chicken Egg Rolls Peking Ravioli Pork Fried Rice One small order of Hot and Sour soup My wife liked the General Tso's Chicken but I was disappointed that it didn't have the crusty texture I'm used to. I had the Hot and Sour soup. It was as good as any I've had in the past. I had the Egg Foo Yong. It seem too "puffy" for me. However, they provided plenty of brown gravy for it, which I liked. We both liked the Egg Rolls -- large and crunchy. They forgot to provide the hot mustard we asked for when we placed the order. The Peking Ravioli was good but the individual pieces were small. The total bill with tax was $80 which I think is way too high for this type of meal. I noticed they wrote 10% uplift on prices on the menu. I assume that is an inflation adjustment but inflation, although high hasn't reached anywhere near this point. Sorry I didn't take any pictures of the dishes -- I should have. So, this restaurant gets a good but not great rating. We'll probably try other Chinese restaurants before we go back to this one. I stopped in at Golden Palace for lunch very recently. This full service Chinese restaurant offers the standard Chinese dishes, Pad Thai noodles, a healthy food section (steamed dishes) plus house specialties including Szechuan Three Delight, House Special Lamb, House Special Duck, Sizzling Beef (or Chicken) Pot, Lake Tung-Ting Treasures, just to name a few. See the menu at http://www.letseat.at/GoldenPalace/menu 21 Combination Specials served all day with pork fried rice and choice of appetizer ($6.95-$8.50 same prices for lunch and dinner) are also offered and a daily lunch buffet is served until 3PM with around 40 items including the standard Chinese dishes, appetizers, soups, and dessert (hard ice cream), pricing in 05/2011: ($7.25 Adults/$6.25 Kids (6-10)/$2.95 Kids (3-5)). However, when I arrived here around 2:00 PM, the place was quiet and the food on the buffet was sitting out for a while, some items dried out, and trays empty. I decided I wanted fresh food and decided to order from the takeout menu instead. I got the Combo 7 ($6.95 plus tax): Vegetable Lo Mein served with pork fried rice and egg roll. As I started to read the Boston Globe (restaurant copy), the food came out quickly in about 5 minutes. The Vegetable Lo Mein was freshly prepared and had a nice mix of fresh sauteed fresh vegetables including carrots, onions, cabbage, sliced mushrooms & sprouts tossed in a mound of firm noodles, not too greasy. The pork fried rice (light brown color) was okay, which had a soft mushy texture with small traces of egg and tender pork pieces. The egg roll was decent which was stuffed with a blend of shredded cabbage and ground bright red pork inside a crispy egg roll wrapper. Overall, the good portion of food was a pretty good value for under $8. Next time, I'll have to get the General Gau's Chicken (Combo 10) based on the other Yelpers' recommendations. 3.4 stars read more

I've had some bad Chinese food but this is hands down the worst. If I've said that in the past this is truly worse. Lunchtime buffet is a joke. Clumps of boiled white rice that you've gotta dig through the clumps and weed through the onions for pork that they call "pork fried rice". There are like 10 chicken dishes and 6 chicken apps including frozen chicken nuggets (no idea what that is all about?!). Lo Mein!?? Noodles with green onions and nothing more. One person buffet and a nasty iced tea in a dirty cup was 12$ and I was told "sorry no credit card for orders under $15". Thanks for not stating that earlier now I've gotta go to the ATM. This place uses so much MSG that one time I almost fell asleep leaving the reseraunt on my way back to work. The buffet really, is just ok and the weekday lunch is the only reason I would ever go. There is ALWAYS an issue with your take out order and always attitude from the staff. In a couple of instances we have experienced people getting very belligerent about not being seated, or not handling the people waiting for pickup. It isn't a coincidence, the service is the worst, especially when they are busy. Consider yourself luck if you get a glass of water or a clean table. Avoid at all costs. read more

Terrible food. Spent more than $30.00 on take out. Everything was left over from lunch and refried in old grease. it was disgusting. Took one bite of each item and then threw all of it in the garbage. It was the greasiest, most awful tasting thing I had ever eaten. I had been there once before and thought I would take a chance on an order for dinner with appetizers. What a mistake. Never again. I drove an hour round trip to get this take out. If I had lived closer I would have brought all of it back and demanded a refund. Don't waste your money. read more

I'm not sure if this place has the same owner and/or management as years before. We were frequent customers then and had a chatty rapport with the wife and husband who owned the establishment. Just dropped in today after many years having passed, expecting to see the same folks as from outward appearances nothing has changed. Well the buffet price has near doubled, some of which can be hand waved away to overall inflation. But the quality wasn't there. Nor even was the hot tea offered with the buffet. Looked like not many customers were either. The buffet bins were about half empty and were replenished quite slowly. Really undermines the attraction of a buffet as you sort of grab what's there while its there and wait for something missing to show up which may or may not, or just eat what you've got on the plate before it gets cold. Really poor execution for a buffet. In retrospect may have been for the best as I'd estimate the oil content of any dish to be roughly 50%. Looks like this place has fallen into the hands of make-a-quick-buck-screw-the-customer ownership. Years ago and for the longest time we were a regular weekend customer. After the resampling today, I wouldn't see us there ever again unless when developing a craving for what we though would be edible food outweighs the recollection of a disgusting dining experience. read more

OMG, for a strip mall restaurant restaurant we weren't expecting much. It was AWESOME. Everything was fresh and well made, drinks were delicious and the place is really family friendly. I finally had a chance to visit this restaurant. We went on a Sunday evening for a quick meal. The food is definitely the best in the area, and can easily compete with the best Chinese restaurants in Nashua. The service was very friendly and attentive. We decided to go with the combo meals as the prices seemed unbelievable. I got the "General Gau's" meal that came with a generous helping of Gen Gau chicken, pork fried rice, and choice of appetizer (I went with Crab Rangoon). My wife got a combo that came with boneless pork, chicken fingers, pork fried rice, crab rangoon, and an egg roll. (Great for sharing with our 17 month old!) Speaking of children, the waiters loved to entertain kids and are very friendly. The food came out in less than 10 minutes and it was very fresh! They obviously change out the oil in their fryers more often than the rest. We were shocked when the total bill came out to only $16.69 (even after NH 8% tax). That was by far the cheapest dinner we've ever had in a restaurant and were well full. This is now our default Chinese restaurant. They have a lunch buffet, which we plan to visit soon, for a mere $6.25 per person (and only $1.95 for chlidren under 5). I now know why it was voted "Best in Monadnock region". Cheers! read more

This is the last time I come here. Very rude straight through the door. I ordered my meal to go and a beverage. The order was around 19.00. I have the guy my card and I woman comes flying over from the bar and days we have a limit to use card and you need to pay cash. There is no sign anywhere that says this and you have got to be kidding me that 19 and change is too little for them to swipe my card. Luckily I had cash on me so I gave them cash and didn't even get correct change back as their cash register was devoid of currency and change. That is totally piss poor customer service. While waiting for my food I used the rest room, upon opening the door to the bathroom you are staying sideways at the urinal, meaning anyone who opens the door while you are in there gets to stare straight at your junk. The bf and I get takeout from here relatively often when we don't feel like cooking and feel like treating our bodies badly. There is good Chinese and there is bad Chinese food in America and Golden Palace is one of the "bad" Chinese restaurants. That's not necessarily a negative thing to say about the restaurant. Bad Chinese food definitely has it's place in American culture. 9 times out of 10, my guilty pleasure from this place is the General Gau's Chicken combo plate (with Crab Rangoon of course). I always feel awful after eating it because it's one of those bad-for-you-meals that taste so delicious that you just can't stop. You'll end up finishing the Chicken off and even though you smartly changed into comfy sweatpants before commencing the meal, you will feel as though there must be a hidden button somewhere that must be undone! General Gau's chicken is sweet, savory, and just slightly spicy. Each bite is coated with just enough sauce and it stays on the chicken rather than pooling on your plate. The Crab Rangoon is pretty good too, but really, it's crab and cream cheese that is fried, how can that ever taste bad? So you must be wondering what I order on those 1 out of every 10 times I don't get General Gau. Unfortunately, I have yet to order any other item on the menu besides the Gau more than once. Why? Because I've been hugely disappointed each time. Here's a couple of examples: The Hunan Chicken, loaded with fresh crisp steamed veggies and tender pieces of steamed chicken, has a pleasing texture but no flavor! Again, a major gripe of mine is when restaurants label an item as "very spicy" yet I can't even discern a hint of chili pepper in the dish. Give me spice, give me heat, give me flavor! A bland, watery, brownish sauce gathered at the bottom of my takeout container. I felt like they must have given me the wrong dish and some poor fella across town must be burning his tongue on my real Hunan Chicken. But probably not. The Sweet and Sour Chicken comes with that childhood favorite and familiar viscous sweet cherry/pineapple sauce, and the heavily breaded fried chicken fingers. I must have been nostalgic for my more carefree days as a kid when I ordered this because I did not remember it being as sweet as it is. Don't get me wrong, I expected sweet, but I also expected sour, but what I got was about 3 cups worth of maraschino cherry flavored jello (with some extra sugar thrown in!) and greasy flour dumplings that had minuscule amounts of meat inside. If this is how it is always been I guess I'm not surprised since as a kid I would eat whole containers of cake frosting and not bat an eyelash. So maybe I'm not a traditional sweet and sour chicken kind of girl anymore, but either way, this was gross. Pros: General Gau chicken is consistently really good (for bad food!). The staff is friendly and the restaurant is clean. The food is ready in less than 10 minutes most of the time and it is cheap. John and I can usually eat here for less than $20. Large portions and the food is always hot. Cons: Can't seem to find any other food there that I like! Trust me, just order the General Gau and crab rangoon combo (#10) and leave it at that. read more

I have been coming to this restaurant for many years and have never had a bad experience. The owners/staff are incredibly friendly and always remember my name. The food is Americanized but always delicious. They serve large portions of food that is always served hot and fairly priced. They don't skimp on takeout either (I have noticed that many other restaurants in the area give smaller portions for the same price when you do takeout). The drinks are excellent as well, they pack quite a punch (especially the mai tai and the scorpion bowl). Golden Palace certainly has my vote for best Chinese in the area! read more

Since moving up here to the middle of nowhere (the reason why I moved here) We have had a hard time finding good Chinese food. This place though is great if not better than some of the good places down in the Boston area.Being that I live a distance from the restaurant,roughly about a 1/2 hour drive, its a must that it reheats well and it does. They are not afraid to make your food spicy when you ask.I have a had the best experiences here. read more

Went there tonight for takeout. I ordered the half teriyaki beef half chicken (8), an order of chicken chop suey, and an order of fried wantons. When I placed the order I specifically asked the person on the phone if the fried wantons had cream cheese in them, as I like crab rangoons but didn't want the crab meat. The person on the phone immediately replied "yes". I got home, opened up the bag and discovered the fried wantons were just that; fried wanton wraps. I also only received 7 teriyaki sticks...not the advertised 8. I was disappointed, as the order came just shy of $24. I have been coming to the Golden Palace for years and this is the first time I have been disappointed, I felt the food was overpriced for the amount I received. If I would have ordered just a combination dinner I would have been much happier. I'm going to try Bonsai II or the Jade next time. The people taking phone orders at the Golden Palace need to be better versed as to what the food you are buying is. If they don't know, or are unsure, they should ask somebody else before answering a definitive "yes". I may go there again but it's going to be a while. If I do, I'll just stick to the combination dinners. read more

Having been to the Golden Palace a number of times over the past couple of years I have yet to be disappointed. With a staff that is always friendly and service that is always prompt are some of the reasons that I will continue to return. It tends to get extremely busy during the holidays but is just as good any day of the week. The all you can eat buffet has all the favorites including lo-main, sesame chicken, crab rangoons (my favorite), and scallion pancakes that are cooked just right and always fresh. Also, for the families they have a scoop your own ice cream for the kids and some really good scorpion bowls and mai tai's for the adults. If I could give no stars I would. Came with family and didn't even eat any of the food and was still charged for the lunch buffet.
