We were visiting Astoria and craving Chinese. We read the reviews (the better reviews are older) and thought it would be worth a try. The waitress was friendly enough, but the food left a lot to be desired. I ordered the almond chicken combo. The egg flower soup was more like having a runny nose and swallowing... the almond chicken was prepared like I've never seen it: battered chicken tenders with gravy over the top. The bbq pork was cold and stiff, and the pork fried rice was very dry and obviously left over from who knows when. There is no excuse not to serve fresh, hot food. Great Chinese food! Having grown up in the area (Long Beach) I ate this stuff religiously through high school and college. I will say, I now come home 3-4 times a year and it's on our "we must eat here at least once during our short vacation" list! Living in Cali we don't have places that will do 2 or 3 items of the above and let you create your own combo plate--I love that about this place! Here are some items we get often and love: Sweet and sour chicken, BBQ pork fried rice, BBQ pork, BBQ pork low mein (get it every time), chicken subgum chow mein, general tso chicken, chicken with black bean sauce, and the nothing fancy egg flower soup. Lovely family that's been there for forever! Always friendly. Food is fast whether it's take out or eaten there. The decor isn't new but it's always clean. While I don't claim to be a Chinese food expert I can say that I have consumed large quantities of food at all of the Chinese restaurants in Clatsop County and this one is far and away the best. Consistently fast friendly service for both take out and table service. The food is always fresh, consistently prepared, and cheap (like McDonald's cheap). I typically eat there a few times a month and can not remember ever spending more the 10$ w/ tip. Favorites include the Wonton Soup, Egg Foo Yung, and Curry Chicken. The decor is spartan and the bar is a bit of a dive (w/strong cheap drinks) but if you want the best Chinese in the area this is your place. read more

The pot stickers and egg rolls were delicious! I ordered chicken chow mein. It was not good. This is the second local restaurant that used rice noodles (over cooked) rather than egg noodles so the chow mein was soggy. Is this a local thing? At any rate I'll definitely try another dish because the rest of the order was tasty. read more

This is in addition to my previous reviews and comments--- Normally, ALL of our Chinese options around here are from the Ho Hum Province, so pretty predictable, uninspired, and similar. Today, the heavens parted literally, as I actually ordered something that i hadn't ordered before at this nor any other Chinese restaurant.... Teriyaki Chicken!! It was hands down the best teriyaki chicken that I have ever had. Perfect sweet and rich flavour with tender chicken with a hint of crispiness on the outside. All marinated in sauce with onions and carrot slivers. Really damn great!! I need to order Japanese dishes more often at our Chinese places!! It is now 1AM, and I am craving it now!!! Give it a try....it is on a lunch special with pork fried rice and two big fried wontons for 6 bucks!! Best hot oolong tea too!! read more

Great lunch specials here, good price and large selection. I love that they start you off with hot tea. I got the BBQ pork lunch ($7 or $8) which included hot and sour soup, a spring roll, and a very, very generous portion of pork fried rice and Chinese BBQ pork slices stir fried with veggies. The spring roll was a little greasy, but overall everything was tasty and fresh. Service was friendly and prompt. The food is more Americanized than authentic Chinese (e.g. crackers with soup, ketchup like dipping sauce), but not surprising given the demographics of the area. They also have a small gambling area in the back (think video poker) hat seems to be popular. I guess that's a thing around here...Chinese restaurants doubling up as "lounges." read more

This is a hole in the wall restaurant on a side street in Astoria. The staff was very friendly and the food was old school Chinese good. The portions were large and piping hot when they got to our table. The prices are extremely reasonable, we ordered 2 combo dinners for 3 of us, we had leftovers to take home and our bill was only 17.00. Our meal included hot tea and soup. We will be back! read more

Every single time I go to Astoria I feel compelled to go eat at Golden Star. Twice now, my family and I have showed up at a different Chinese restaurant, realized our mistake, and driven over to Golden Star instead. Their food is just so classically delicious It had been so long since I had been to a real Chinese/American sit down restaurant that I had forgotten how much better they can be than Panda Express. This place rocks - the ambience, the tea, the soup, and the General Tso's. Chow Mein is so good too, and the fried rice. They will substitute anything for anything, and it's all affordable and in such huge portions that I can eat for two days. This place rocks!! read more

A great find. Ordered Won Ton Soup, Fried Rice and General's Chicken (based on another review). Everything was outstanding. However, we did not see the warnings about portion size - this mean could have fed 4 more people. Hard to pack to go when you are on the road - so order carefully. Service was good. Food was horrible. It was caked in a sweet paste. The ribs were soaking in a sweet sauce with the bones still in them. The shrimps were not de-veined. Four of us ate maybe 20% of the total food we ordered it was so hideous. There was a pile of indescribable white meat with a ton of boiled vegetable mixed in with the meat. No taste at all. Just checked out this place during the weekend I visited Astoria, and I must say - this has to be the best Chinese Restaurant of all! I like how the place is somewhat isolated near a park so it's quiet & lots of parking space available. The owner herself was very inviting and the food was delicious! We ordered Chop Suey but looked totally different that what we normally saw but once you tried it, it was super good! (Don't judge a book by it's cover - is what I learned) Overall, I was super shocked on how cheap it was even without the tax! Totally recommend! read more

We visit the north coast of Oregon every year after Christmas through the new year. It was always a tradition for another couple and us, to have Chinese food on New Years Eve. Our favorite place in Seaside changed hands. The food was not as good as before, and they do not prepare Almond Chicken, a favorite of three of us. We tried a couple of other places, until we found GOLDEN STAR. OMG!!!! The food is DELICIOUS to say the least. They start you off with tea and it is not watered down like some places. The egg flower soup which has a taste like no other. A nice rich, flavorful broth, not salty like other places. The Almond Chicken had a light crispy coating, was so tender and juicy, it melted in your mouth. It also had the right amount of gravy (not smothered) which was also delicious. They get the BBQ Pork right. It is tender as well, and I have had plenty of tough, dried out pork at other places. This BBQ Pork was a pleasant surprise. Yay!!! My friend ordered the Pork Chow Mein and she raved about it. I had the best Chicken Subgum Chow Mein. Every thing was served hot, and tasted so fresh, not overly salty like some Chinese restaurants. The Egg Foo Young was one of the best we have ever tried. A very affordable place under $40.00 for the four of us. The people are the sweetest ever, and aim to please. There is ANOTHER Chinese restaurant in town. It is called Golden something which we tried last year. Some of the reviews here are what we experienced there. Golden Star is great. I would give it five stars but too many places have five stars that have terrible food. Maybe professional writers are responsible. Golden Star has the dishes that Americans can expect to find in in the USA. Knowing people, like my wife, can recognize the home cooking menu items such as Golden Star Mongolian Beef cooked with cabbage. The best you will ever find. The service is great, all the people friendly. It does get busy in the evenings, and weekends especially. Very comfortable atmosphere, doesnt seem to cheap but not so classy that you need to dress up either. Most definaltely you go for the food though. Servings are huge for a small price. Everything served is clean, quality and fresh. Its the best chinese food I have ever eaten, when trying to find similar places they always seem to fall short.
