I had a serious of unfortunate events a year ago that led to me selling my car. I'm finally back in the used car market but only looking to spend $4000. I was test driving a used car in Sherman Oaks and wanted to have it inspected by a mechanic before purchasing. Looking on Yelp, I saw Gomora Auto Service had great reviews so that's where I decided to take the car. Jose saved me thousands of dollars with his thorough inspection! He did chemical analysis on the exhaust, did a routine inspection, and even TOOK PICTURES of the problems he found so that he could show me everything wrong with the car! Not only that, but Laura gave me a ride to the nearest shopping center so I didn't have to be bored waiting around the shop while they were inspecting the car! After Laura picked me up from the mall, Jose went over all the pictures with me explaining to me all the various problems with the car. Fixing all the major issues would have cost even more than they were asking for the car itself. It's not easy finding a decent car for $4000, and Jose really saved me from getting screwed over. Last week I came to LA to visit some family and had issues with my thermostat in my Land Rover discovery. My friend recommended Jose for the repair. I usually try to stick to Land Rover specific mechanics but Jose was super knowledgeable, quick and had a very fair price. I was stuck in LA for a couple days looking at places, one company quoted me 6 times what I paid here. Not only was the repair a great price but Jose knew I wanted to get home as soon as possible and finished my car in a few hours. They also checked in with us and updated us every step of the way to let us know when the car would be finished and what was going to be done. He quoted us and sure enough that's the price we paid when we picked up the car. I've since drove the car out to Vegas and had my regular mechanic go over all the hoses and cooling systems and everything looks great! Was quoted $30 to replace my headlight and brake light (which I have already purchased the bulbs). I, of course, called around for different pricing, and "Jullians" said they would do it for free if it wasn't too difficult, but they were on the other side of town. I decided to call "Certified Collision" and Junior had quoted $10 maybe $20 depending on how difficult, but turns out....he did it for FREE! He inspected the car for me, and went above and beyond and tried to bleed out the radiator, test drove the car, and gave it undivided attention. Jose is always honest and will let me know all the details before working on my car and even if he SHOULD look at it. A couple times i brought it in because of intermittent stalling. Based upon the high recommendations I decided to try this shop out and at first the owner seemed very upfront, even telling me how his business survives because of his honesty and not charging customers high prices like the dealerships. Unfortunately, for him, I know a thing or two about cars. I may not be a mechanic, but I am quite familiar with cars and generally know when something is awry. Well, something was awry here. I had a part replaced as I did not have the time to do it myself and his price was reasonable. However, shortly after the repair, my car began acting up. I brought this to the attention of the owner and he said he would need to charge extra to look at this and would not take any responsibility for his work. What is funny is he continued to tell me how he was honest and that was how he made his living. I would warn anyone from going here unless you are gullible and feel reassured when someone tells you they are honest. The only good thing that came from this is that I found a very reputable guy at Kenny's Automotive in Van Nuys, he is a great guy and has given me advice and looked briefly at my cars for no cost. I hope this helps others, not sure how Gomora has gotten so many positive reviews, maybe my experience was out of the ordinary, but it only took one time to make me sour to the place. My ancient Nissan started to 'not start' if the engine were still warm. I took it to Gomora & explained the ailment. Mr. Gomora (first name Juan?) said to leave it with him, and he'd check it out. Late the next afternoon, I called him. He had tried a few times to replicate the problem, but of course the car wouldn't do it for him. So he said come pick up the car, with no charge for the time he put in, and if it did it again, to bring it back. That was cool. read more

I rarely ever yelp, however, set aside some time because of how ripped off I feel and want fellow people to be aware that despite all the great reviews...I had quite the opposite experience. I just moved to Sherman Oaks, and sure enough started having car problems in need of finding a trusty mechanic right away. Since I don't know many people here, I looked to yelp and found that Gomora had so many great reviews plus a couple of really negative ones. I decided to brush off the few horrible reviews because there are always disgruntled people complaining about something, and wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt. Long story short, I was swindled. Jose told me I should change the spark plugs and a couple of cables (which cost $273.36) because the problem with my car usually was an easy fix as just that. He did tell me that if the car still continued to shake, I would have to change the ignition coil which he highly recommended we resort to as option 2. He basically convinced me to go with the first option assuring me my problem should be solved. HOWEVER, nothing was fixed! After I brought it back, he said it COULD be the ignition coil that would cost me another couple hundred plus some other various problems that he hasn't determined. It went from an easy spark plug issue where he was reassuring me that would solve the problem to a multitude of issues. And what he originally said about the ignition coil...he was now UNSURE of! Talk about a ploy to get people to come back and spend more...especially a recent graduate student. How does one sleep at night?!! I wasn't going to hand over anymore of the money I could be using to pay off my student loans, so I took it to get a second opinion in Orange County from my friend's mechanic. Verdict is, Gomora preys on those who can't fix their cars themselves. I have no idea how he has so many good reviews. Don't get me wrong, Jose is very polite and smiles a whole lot, but behind that smile you know his brain is calculating how much he's about to rip you off!! Oh and yes, he gave me that whole spiel about how he's trying to save me money...blah blah. Stay clear of this place at all costs! read more

Having received a recommendation prior to Gomora Auto Service but not a need, I was now desperate. The diagnosis was quick, as were the part installation and labor ensuring that I could take the car home that afternoon. I was given a choice in the quality of the alternator (rebuilt, mid-level brand or top notch) and quoted a price for each. Gomora is now my regular mechanic. I recently had the "service needed " light appear and again, the diagnosis was quick along with the repair. I requested a top-down inspection to determine if I should keep the car. The details were thorough and included major items, down to a rear light out on the license plate. I trust Mr. Gomora because his vehicle runs well with 400,000 miles and he has made careful, economically sound decisions about the vehicle. One item to notice when selecting an auto mechanic are the types of vehicles in the shop and the length of time customers have trusted their vehicles to the mechanic. The vehicles visiting his shop include brand new and expensive, classic favorites owners treasure, and run-of-the-mill workhorses. Almost every customer I encountered in Gomora's shop were returnees and known to Gomora per the encounter in the office. That signifies trust. I don't really do yelp or do this leave a Yelp review and but I'm extremely disappointed. Jose is an awesome guy when you talk he's extremely kind and respectful. When you walk in your welcomed but as a mechanic shop I question it all. I gave Gomora auto service a task A big one at that because I have never seen an issue like this. I have a 2002 vw gti the car has extremely low miles and works great but the car one day starts to shut off while I'm at a stop light and then all together one day the car doesn't start at all. I look and look and look for a vw mechanic because not many people want to work with these cars it seems. I came to yelp and saw the reviews and made it happen and brought the car there. He tells me it would be $100 for a diagnostic and if he can't find a problem I can take my car back and he won't charge me or if he finds something and I say yes he will go ahead and make the changes in too of the diagnostic and thag seemed super fair. That's fair the price doesn't bother me. Spending money isn't a big deal as long as I know it will be fixed. I asked him to please check if the car just has a bad connection maybe a loose connection and check all my wiring thag could lead to that sort of problem he said will do. He called and said my starter cylinder is bad and needs replacing telling me what's wrong with the part and so on. I asked him multiple times are you sure the car doesn't just have a lose wire or a bad relay or something electrical? He says he can't tell until he switches this part and checks off the list I give him a go while he was doing that he says my batter is extremely low and would I like to go ahead and change it I said yes because a bad battery could probably be the culprit. He calls me and says he drive the car and it works great. I pick up the car and drive it home. The same day I get home I try to unlock my car it wouldn't from the keyless remote so I had to use the spare key to get in the car when I go ahead and try to start the car it made a vigorous ticking noise and comming from the dash and did not start eventually the car died completely. As I'm extremely busy I had to wait a couple of days to take it back because it's a process to toe a car and towing a car is not cheap I tow it there and tell him to find out he problem and fix it no matter the cost. Same day calls back and says he finds nothing with diagnostics. But tells me my hood latch all of a sudden is broken and will not open easily. I told him to keep the car two, three more days and see if it does anything and shuts off and he said hasn't done it but he believes it will happen again. I get there and he tells me the situation honestly and willingly. Our conversations lead to he can't fix the car. He does not know what's wrong with the car and he says the car will shut off like it did since he hasn't done anything to the car. I do not mind spending 400 dollars on a car especially if it's German but when he tells me that he can't offer me any help boggles my mind especially when he's telling me about a customers car that he had to put his own money into and had to take it to a specialist who eventually find out what was wrong with the car. He did not offer me anything but a I need to take my car and when I asked him if my car dies around the block he can happily take it back but I would have to tow it back and as I said toes are not cheap. The best part on arrival when picking up my car with the problem not fixed is my hood was open and for how long ? I'm not entirely sure but it's not the greatest thing for a car. And when he starts telling me he's afraid that if he closes my hood it might not open again completely mind boggles me because my hood latch was working perfectly fine when I left it there. To top it off he he closes the hood instead of the hood locking into place the issue now is the hood of my car won't lock closed. He told me a local junkyard could have a piece for about 50 dollars or he could order one for me and replace it. I'm not asking for free labor or free anything but how can you let someone leave with a broken hood latch possibly risking the drivers and others around luckily I don't live to far so I got home and I now will order the part and replace it myself. I still don't know why my hood all of a sudden "breaks" when I bring it back and the problem he tells me is then switched, maybe from trying to get the hood to open it was damaged I don't know and probably never will. I really wanted this to be the place to bring my Volkswagen and instead I've had one of the worst experiences with a mechanic I've ever had. My problem still there and not fixed even after I payed someone to fix it and they basically gave up telling me to go to a specialist and that they can't do anything for me after I payed them. I should update my review of Gomora Auto. You will recall that across the decades Jose and his team have worked on my Porsche, 2 Alfa Romeo's, a Range Rover, a Discovery, and have looked at some other cars I have considered buying. In 2013 I bought a 1995 BMW 530i M60 automatic, production date 10/1995, first registered 1/19/1996 (my wife's 14th birthday), black/black, with 107,017 miles for ... $2,100. As the price suggests, the 530i was on life support, but Jose did a leak down test of the 3 liter 215hp V-8 engine and pronounced it sound. The usual oxygen sensor issue was cured as was the twisted front passenger seat. New radiator, new seals everywhere, brakes, a metal impeller for the water pump, Akebono pads, and I am pretty sure the 60-0 stopping distance was improved from the 130 foot factory spec. The A/C was fixed. About a year after purchase Jose installed all 18 pieces of a Lemforder control arm kit from fcpeuro.com ($998.13 with shipping). The German brick has run absolutely great ever since. We take it in to Jose for even minor maintenance. It is so hard to find a good, trustworthy mechanic in this town. I used to go to Karsten when I had a Toyota --- but then I inherited a Nissan and Karsten won't work on Nissans so I was lost. Luckily, Mats recommended Gomora which is right next door. And Jose has been amazing! I've been going to Jose since 2013, when I moved to the area and he was enthusiastically recommended to me by neighbors who had been taking their current cars plus two vintage VW bugs to him for years. They assured me he was honest, reliable, and provided solid repair and maintenance work at reasonable rates. They were right. I had an aging Infiniti G35 that he kept running for several years without ever advising me to put more money into for repairs than was absolutely necessary. Now I take my Audi Q5 to him. With Jose, calls are always returned, the detailed bill is always explained, and the car is always ready when he says it will be. If you need a rental car while your car is in his shop, he will see that you are taken care of. Jose doesn't work on every brand of car as he has a gentleman's agreement with the other repair shops at that address, but if he can't help you he will refer you to someone who can. His lovely wife, Laura, helps him run the office, so it's a family affair at Gomora and you may even meet the young grandkids, who sometime come to visit and "help". I went here because I was concerned about engine vibration and also because wanted to check the engine mounts - there was a grinding noise sometimes in first gear and a vibration felt in first gear of the manual transmission. Also, there sometimes there was a squeaking noise under the hood as well. I know what repairs have been made on this car and told the owner everything - including timing belt, power steering motor (which is rebuilt and bit noisy), front suspension, etc. I left the car and a while later, the owner called with a list of repairs: the engine mounts needed to be replaced (I had pretty much told him that), that the passenger side bushing needs replacing, the power steering motor needs replacing - that's when I interrupted to remind him that I had recently replaced it and I knew it was a bit noisy. Then he said, the timing belt needs to be replaced. I interrupted to remind him that the timing belt had been replaced 10,000 miles ago and he started yelling "Come get your car! I can't repair it!" So I did. I took it to another mechanic to ask about the bushing and he said he couldn't find a problem and then to a 3rd mechanic just to make sure - and he said there was no problem with the bushing. The 3rd mechanic (recommended highly by a friend) said that probably all the vibration and noises would go away if I replaced the engine mounts. He replaced the engine mounts and he was right - no grinding, no vibration, no squeaking and no problem with the bushing. Unfortunately, Gomora did not listen to me and recommended repairs that were not necessary. read more
