I dislike giving bad review but I will if I feel like I had a bad experience. I took a break from work to go get a margarita w my boyfriend. The salsa & chips had no flavor, we then wanted to give them another chance and our margarita tasted like juice. I asked if they could make it stronger and they said no. So we returned them. We still wanted to try something else before we decided to give up on them and got a guacamole. It was the worst guacamole I have ever had in my life! Seemed like they got an avocado and just put it on a plate & added tomatoes. I wasted 2 hours of my life to come here and get nasty guac, salsa & watered down margaritas. Great food at a great price. I've had breakfast here several times and leave waddling out. Lunch is just as great, Today I had half an order of steak fajitas, (came with guacamole, pico, refried beans, rice, and toritillas both flour AND corn) and that was plenty for me. Typically very good food and good customer service. However today was the complete opposite to any good service we've experienced. We ordered to go & realized they gave us the wrong order. We called to try to see what the restaurant could do but the only response we received was " bring the plate back up here because our cook doesn't mess up". I don't know what makes him so perfect , but anywho. The issue is that it is the completely wrong plate. Either the cook or packer messed up. This place disappoints every time. I'd give zero stars if not for the great flour tortillas, but that honestly those are the only good things on the menu... Best Mexican restaurant I've been to in dallas hands down. Wednesday they have an enchilada special for about $7 done in. I had the guiso mexicano and my bf had the stewed pork. They both came with rice, beans, and fresh flour tortillas. I normally don't like flour tortillas but these are so great. The queso is also really good. They give you plenty of food and it's priced well. My bf ordered a wild turkey and coke and it was a strong drink, well worth the $6. read more

One of my favorite restaurants in Dallas, Gonzalez Restaurant puts heart and soul in its food. The flour tortillas are homemade and thick; the rice is full of flavor from chicken stock; the beans are umami-rich from pork fat as they should be; and the chili con carne on my enchiladas is thick and luxuriant, not some powdered-mix-with-water, tranluscent affair. People who know what good tex-mex is know this place nails it. By the way, the table salsa is warm and a bit different, but you can ask for a cold salsa, too. read more

Best restaurant I have been to in a while. At first I thought it was small but that was only one room. The atmosphere is great very relax with Hispanic music on the background. I had the "Mole Enchiladas" and let me tell you guys they were the best enchiladas I had ever tasted. One thing you should know about a mexican place is that if the hot sauce and chips aren't good, i guarantee you the food will also not be good. I got recommended to eat at this place and i hated that it was in jefferson street, i just don't like parking here for some reason. I got there and they told me wait time was about 25 minutes, that is reasonable in a popular restaurant, but we ended up waiting 40 minutes. I didn't mind because it was a one time thing, but if i knew it was a 40 minute wait i probably wouldn't have waited. We go in and somehow they let us bring in some outside drinks which was cool because we had to wait so long outside that we got drinks at the dollar store as we waited. We sat down, i tasted the sauce and chips and i already knew it was going to be good. Ordered an orchata drink and some mole, and was happy with the large cup size and the amount of food we got. The drink was authentic and the food was really tasty. If i ever come here again and they have take out i probably would to avoid wait times because that mole is made different from other places. Total price for me was about $18 and im not complaining because if the prices are high they better make sure they give us a good amount of food and they sure did. Ya should come here! read more

The customer service was phenomenal, however I didn't catch our waitress name. The decor of the restaurant was extremely to busy for me. With pinatas, banners, multiple colors... etc. We ordered the burrito platter, a built combination and a steak fajita salad. With two margaritas (one frozen another on the rocks) Burrito platter: Must have been amazing because my friend damn near licked the plate. Lbsvs The build your own combo: One taco, one cha pula, one enchilada w/beans and rice. My friend ate everything without and any hesitation. Fajita steak salad: I was under the impression I ordered a Taco salad. But it really was a salad with steak on it. It wasn't good, because it was completely lettuce. But I believe I lost my appetite because it wasn't what I ordered. And I refuse to send my food back to the kitchen. I wasn't knocked off me my feet by this establishment. Food and waitress was very good. I had enchiladas with rice and beans with a side of flour tortillas, which comes all together listed on the menu. Wowzers to the flour tortillas! I have been craving some homemade fresh thick flour tortillas and these were just right! They definitely don't hold back on their tortilla making skills! We don't live close but I can tell you it is worth the drive to get your tortilla craving satisfied here! My only complaint was the salsa, it tasted like a soup more than a salsa. I like that it was warm salsa and warm chips, but it really lacked a flavor and you can see the oils glistening on the surface. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't that great either. But the entrees made up for that part. My enchiladas were well made and beans and rice were good too. Our waitress was attentive and professional, great experience. The area is a little odd and we didn't see it from the road where we drove around to try to find it. We just parked (had to pay a meter for parking, thank god we had some change) and just walked till we finally saw the logo on a door. This is the best Mexican food I have found in a looong while. I've tried the others that you are thinking, "Well surely there's no way its better than ____". Yes, it is if not, better and another thing, don't call me Shirley! Homemade tortillas that remind me of the ones I grew up eating for dinner. The mango margaritas are awesome and I don't like margaritas. But most importantly, the chicken fajitas tasted like real chicken fajitas. I find that many places serve something resemebling a chicken by product as their fajitas so I never like to order them. But this place was awesome. LEGIT! Hidden gem in Oak Cliff! Never judge a book by its covers goes well with this restaurant. From the outside, this place looks really small. When I walked in I was amazed on how big it was. I felt like I was walking into spanish house as the decor is really cute. It wasn't busy Sunday evening and we were seated right away. The chips were really good but the salsa was bland. Let's skip into the meal. My hubby ordered Mole chicken enchiladas. I, of course needed to try this sauce as I've always thought Mole was a sweet sauce. Let's just say this had to be one of the best Mole sauce ever and it wasn't very sweet. It had a smokey/spicy kick to the sauce. The enchilada was amazing with their homemade tortilla which I'll get to in bit. The chicken inside was moist and flavorful. Hands down one of the best enchiladas I've ever had. So back to the tortillas, they are as thick as pancakes and oh so yummy. The tortillas were really fresh and not your typical type that you can get from the store. It was thick and filled with flavor. I can eat 3 of their tortillas and call it my meal as it was fantastic. A friend ordered quesadillas and said they were really good. One of the most authentic TexMex restaurants in Dallas. No big surprise to find it in the Oak Cliff area. Located on W Jefferson, parking can be difficult and the street is lined with meters. Argh! Thankfully, the meters are free after 5PM & weekends (a fact quickly becoming a rare thing in Dallas). I went two times this weekend to Gonzales...yes, I liked it that much. I can be a snob when it comes to Mexican fare. I was happy that everything both times was freshly made and prepared very well. Everything had flavor and no one I went with was disappointed. Dinner 1: picadillo, rice, refried beans, tortillas Dinner 2: beef tamale, chicken enchilada, crispy taco, rice, refried beans, tortillas About the only thing I didn't like was that soft drinks are of the canned variety...hence, no free refills. Love this place. Salsa and chips are good, queso is always yummy. We've gotten the breakfast tacos, barbacoa which is perfect and not all greasy. Menudo is AMAZING! The flour tortillas are just like my Grandmas and that means fantastic! Cabrito quisado was great, carne quisado burrito was great, chicken mole enchiladas were F'ing money. We loved so many things about this family oriented Mexican restaurant. While it is off the beaten path, we knew it would be good when there was a wait for some of their larger tables. We were able to be seated right away for a party of two. We were not as wild about the hot salsa they served, but per the other yelp suggestions we requested the "cold salsa" and it was excellent. We had the enchiladas and the fajitas. Usually my boyfriend does not love steak at Mexican restaurants but we both felt like the steak in the fajitas was exceptionally seasoned and well cooked. The enchilada sauce tasted homemade. Their flour tortillas, just as everyone raved about were wonderful. They are served warm and are thick--almost like a gordita. We agreed we would come back just for the flour tortillas. The service was great, even though they were very busy we were in and out. Our server took the time to tell us what he liked on the menu. This restaurant is very family oriented, the vast majority of the tables were full of multi generational families sharing a meal. They do serve beer, wine and hard liquor, but you can tell that their priority here is quality food in a welcoming atmosphere. There is a decent amount of street parking that is metered. Prices are cheap for the food and the drinks. We saw another table get Sopapillas and while we were too full they looked amazing and will be back to try them too. Overall this is a wonderful authentic Mexican resturant that is worth a visit. read more

I have been searching for a Mexican place in DFW up to mine and my half-Mexican honey's standards for so long that it was almost anti-climactic when we finally found it. I will start by saying that my honey's mom is Mexican and used to own a restaurant down in Corpus Christi that was very successful, until she retired and her brothers ran it into the ground. His mom's rice and beans are to us the gold standard. No one else's even comes close. Gonzales though, gets pretty darn close to close. What did we love about Gonzales? 1) Tortillas. Thick, fresh, delicious, definitely way better than average. 2) Rice. It had good texture, good flavor, did not have bits of formerly-frozen-veggies or too much tomato sauce. It didn't taste exactly like J's mom's but they are in the same ballpark at least. 3) Beans - thick, delicious, tasted more like bacon fat than lard. 4) Carne Guisada - this is the gravy based kind rather than the stew kind which is good. The gravy had a good flavor and the meat was good quality. 5) Fajitas - they actually do fajitas "right" (or what I in my infinite wisdom consider right, which is marinated and grilled a la Pappasitos or Uncle Julio's, which have horrid rice and beans but good fajitas). 6) Cheese enchiladas - best restaurant enchiladas I've had. The corn tortilla texture was perfect, not mushy, not hard. The flavor was great. All cheddar cheese, it might have been cool to have a blend of cheeses, but I'm not complaining. I love the sauce, it's the same sauce as on the carne guisada. 7) Chips were fresh and tasty 8) Prices were reasonable. (Esp. at lunch, the breakfasts aren't particularly cheap but you get a ton of food) 9) Honey said the menudo was very good, I don't eat it though so I didn't try it. 10) The potatoes that come with breakfast, mmm... What didn't we love? The salsa - as others have said, it is served very warm. It did have some kick to it (I could taste jalapenos) but I didn't find it extraordinary. You can ask for pico de gallo or the spicy salsa (which is very spicy, but IMO not that tasty). Parking here is a pain, it is all metered and if you park on Jefferson backing out can be dangerous. Try to snag one of the spots on Bishop (but leave one for me!) The queso is pretty mediocre. Not as bad as some, but definitely not the best either. I probably won't order it again. J said it was the best Mexican breakfast he's had in ages and wanted to go again the next day, even though it's a 45 minute drive from our house. Older Stepson loved the chicken enchiladas, he ate them too fast for me to snag a bite to report on. All in all, a win. I have been looking so long for a place to get fajitas that also knows how to make rice and beans and that won't break the bank that I feel I can now die happy. read more

The place is pretty cozy, so I bet there would be quite a wait if you went in during their busy hours. I started off with the guac with some of their chips. Awesome! I don't like my guac too smooth..I like a little bit of chunky-ness with pieces of avocado. Perfect! I then had the cheese enchiladas. The re fried beans were very solid, along with the enchiladas. But, what really won me over was the flour tortillas!!! Sooooo good! We really wanted to like this place, because of all of the great reviews. However, the quality of the food was not impressive to us at all. As a vegetarian, there were essentially no options - I ordered a "side salad" which was just iceberg lettuce and raw chopped tomatoes without any seasoning, and a guacamole chalupa, which was a puffy bread with mashed avocado (again, no seasoning or flavor) and MORE iceberg lettuce. Vegetarianism aside, my sister ordered the chicken enchiladas and also complained of the blandness of the food. Also - the foam cups were super sticky, which was big turn-off for us. When I took my first bite of salsa I knew... It was arguably the blandest salsa I've had this side of the Trinity. And what's worse? It was served hot! Like temperature hot...like I almost burned my tongue hot! Talk about a surprise... I ordered the ole trusty chile relleno. It was filled with ground beef.and only ground beef. Chicken enchilladas with tomitillo sauce. I always use their neon sign as a landmark. I drive down Jefferson until that sign comes into view. Then I begin looking for parking. Muy Tasty! One of our friends suggested this place for dinner last week, and we had never been, but she promised great Carne Guisada, so I was there. I didn't actually order carne guisada for dinner since before we left, I found their website and realized they had mole'. (Not the varmint, the very spicy chocolate-based sauce.) (If you've never heard of carne guisada or mole', then you've been going to places that probably only have enchiladas and fajitas, or accidentally going to Fridays. Expand your horizons. Trust me.) So, special dishes aside, this is great Mexican food, cheap. The flour tortillas are worth the trip to Oak Cliff by themselves. (My wife did have carne guisada. It was fabulous.) Parking can be interesting, but the meters on the street are only active during the day, and we didn't have a problem finding a spot. They close at 9pm, which seemed a bit early, but they were gracious when we overstayed - we didn't get stared down by the staff - and the street was pretty dead when we left, so I guess most of the businesses in the neighborhood are closed by then. read more

First let me say this: NO FOUNTAIN DRINKS!!! That is just a sin. Next: NO DRAFT BEER! That is just wrong. However, if you can get past that we had some great food. The tortillas are heaven, Soft, fluffy and just a tad crispy on the outside. Good sour cream chicken enchiladas, the chicken in the tacos is seasoned perfect and the guacamole tostada was piled high with avocado, cheese, lettuce and tomato. They have the best refried beans- the best, they are creamy and perfectly flavored with a hint of bacon. Did not like the rice as it tasted like converted rice.
