Although it was sad to see Fabrics & Findings shrink, Rochester needed Good Luck to breathe some life into the Village Gate, or as my friends and I call it "Mall of Broken Dreams." Growing up, I loved coming to the Village Gate, but the dynamic of this complex has changed significantly over the years. Once the mural was painted over and Salena's moved, I thought this place was on its last leg. Maybe I was wrong... Good Luck brings some big city style and class to an area that desperately needed something fresh. The dining experience is great and the menu is more complex than other restaurants in the city. I like the large dining tables and mismatched chairs, the tapas-esque sharing approach is nice for couples and small groups of friends. Sometimes service can be a little slow or hard to get a hold of, but this place is run by the same guys that ran Cibon and Java's, so you should recognize a few familiar faces and the aloof attitude from a couple of the staff members. Attitudes aside, I've always had a positive experience at Good Luck. The house-made cavatelli is always a good choice, and the waitstaff is always able to recommend a good wine pairing (a real plus in my book). Sure, the major cities may have "better" offerings, but you know what, Good Luck really stands on it's own. As a native Rochesterian living in NYC eating at some of the finest restaurants on the East Coast, I believe that Good Luck is a great addition to Rochester's food scene and a much needed venue in this neighborhood. If I moved back to Rochester tomorrow, I could eat here and not feel like I was missing out on the big city food scene, and that says a lot. read more

Obviously a very popular place on a Saturday night and the drink was good but I think Revelery is better. Ran into some friends that were waiting for a table but they gave up. Good luck getting a table on the weekend. Cool ambiance, good mix of people. A little loud, but what crowded place isn't. I will try to go back earlier in the day or on a weekday to really check it out and check out the food. read more

This is great place for a nice date night , or just to hang out at the bar and have some drinks in a low key atmosphere . I 've been a few times and I always get the good luck burger it's one of my favorite burgers in town! The menu is all shareable portions which is nice to be able try a few different things when you go with a group. The service is always great! I highly recommend this place especially if you are in the village gate area. It s normally pretty busy so calling for a reservation is highly recommended. read more

Really good. Whoever said Rochester doesn't have good food, apparently never actually dined around the area at all! Good Luck has really great food, and I went there awhile ago, so I don't quite remember all the dishes we got, but the one that sticks out in my mind was the Blueberry Clafoutis. It's a cobbler type dish, served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream...definitely disappeared within a few minutes. The dishes are all served family style, so, something to keep in mind. Great wine selection as well! Oh, and it wasn't AS expensive as I thought it was going to be--we got 1 salad, 3 main dishes, 3 desserts, and a bottle of wine between 4 people, and we each spent about $45, including tip. It is hard not to like Good Luck, even if they are always full, never return your calls (why ask you to leave a message) and a bit hit and miss. The place is taken out of East Village, and probably has the only swanky/young'ish crowd in Rochester (Next Door is another). The food really is good, the atmosphere lively and young, they always have plenty of parking which is a plus. The dishes are quite original and well presented, but nothing like Michelin star as one review talked about..not sure where he got that from. Coctails have a kick and once you get a seat the service is good, decor stands apart in any city, really cool. They even have the odd "game" on the menu - I enjoyed the rabbitt. Great place for a romantic dinner date, then head to the bar - warm atmosphere and pleasant lighting. It works ! read more

I have been coming here for special occasion dinners for years and always leave happy. While it is busy on the weekends, we've learned to make reservations and even to go during off peak hours so as to enjoy a quiet night out. I love their signature cocktails, though I think their seasonal changing menu needs to keep more consistent vegetarian options - there are not always substantial enough veg. entrees for someone who does not eat meat. read more

What was good- Bibb lettuce, burger was outstanding and perfectly cooked, fried chicken was good but the Mac and cheese on the side was even better, waitress removed things from our bill without us asking when mistakes were made. Now the rest of our experience.... I had high expectations after reading all the reviews of this place. After we found the hidden entrance we walked into a sauna. The a/c was on according to the waitress but not working right. It was 87 degrees outside and 87 in the restaurant with no air movement. I saw a girl fanning herself like she was in church on a hot summer Sunday in Alabama. Oh and they said it should be fixed by July! Haha Wtf. I couldn't enjoy my meal because sweat was soaking through my shirt. We had a party of four and ordered two appetizers and three dinners to share. Plenty of food if you are trying to figure out how much to order. The app special was a fried egg w/ asparagus it was pretty bland and nothing really special about it. The 40 hour pork belly sandwich was a fail. As Mitch W. said " if that was cooked for forty hours, I'll eat my hat." The pork was very tough and we couldn't even finish it. The waitress took it off our bill without us even asking. Didn't get her name but she was a plus for the restaurant. I'll have to go back after they get their a/c fixed. I was pretty disappointed with the overall meal. I feel bad for the employees there that have to work in that heat especially the cooks. read more

Good luck is a fun experience. Everything on the menu is meant to be shared, so you can sample a lot of their menu items. I came here for a birthday celebration with 7 others. We ordered 2 of the burgers, their 2 specials that day (smoked salmon salad and a goat cheese gnocchi), the white pizza, the greens salad, and we tried the coconut cream pie and chocolate cake for dessert. The burger is awesome as mentioned in other reviews. I'm not a fan of the fries but they're OK. The two specials were amazing, I'm still dreaming about that gnocchi! The white pizza was also great, the spicy honey was a cool addition! The coconut cream pie was tasty, but the chocolate cake was burnt so it was rather disappointing. Our waiter was friendly and answered all of our questions, all in all I would say this is a great place for groups and a fun way to try new food! read more

If I could go with a 4.5 or maybe even 4.75, I would.. But it is lacking just enough to be shy of the 5. Our party of 5 ordered the curried lentils (my personal favorite), the smokehouse, corned beef and cabbage, and a burger. The restaurant was packed but our service was excellent and the food arrived quickly -- it is 'family style' so it arrives whenever it is ready and is meant for sharing. No cold food, yay! Everything was excellent. My only very minor setbacks are about the meat. It seemed overly seasoned or too smoky (yes I realize the name of the entree is the smokehouse, but it seemed like overkill) and the burger, which was ordered medium, was cooked medium well. That is so very minor but with fine dining, I expect it to be cooked to order. I keep going back and forth on the ambiance. On one hand, the super dark atmosphere allows you to feel like you're in your own little group's bubble (even though the place is quite noisy). On the other hand, it is really dark and that's just kind of creepy. One thing I really liked is that you can bring your own wine with a $10 corkage fee per bottle. That REALLY helps the cost of going to a more upscale restaurant. read more

Excellent food as always. Just make sure you ask some questions about quantity of a serving before you order. We have gotten a few items which were way over priced for the quantity, however every thing we have ordered has been excellent. They have some great cocktails too with a very knowledgeable staff. We were stuffed after, although we weren't immensely hungry to begin because we had had a heavy lunch. I think if we were really hungry, we would have had to order two additional plates or so. What I liked best about this restaurant is that nothing we ordered tasted like it came from a can. Heirloom cherry/grape tomatoes were used for the salad. The tagliatelle was delicious, you could tell it was handmade because it didn't have the dried pasta texture, but it wasn't mushy like some fresh pastas are sometimes. The chicken was juicy. The one food "failure" had to be the red curry and coconut ice cream (though it was still better than the olive oil ice cream I had once elsewhere). The service was pretty good, no complaints there. I have a personal preference for restaurants that are lit well enough for me to see the colour of the food; this was a little too dark (I think the baby tomatoes were supposed to be pretty colours, but I'm not sure). read more

This is it: the place I recommend to everyone and anyone who asks. Just don't go on your own. Food is (generally) served family style. The cocktails are amazing, the seasonal sangria never lets me down, and the food... oh my god, the food. The burger (which easily feeds 2+ people) is the best burger in the world. The pile o' fries and the homemade ketchup seal the deal for me. The fried bologna sandwich on rye is amazing. I took my mom for her birthday, and this was the only thing she really didn't want to share. The salads are fresh and inventive, the meat dishes are savory and satisfying, and the portions are perfect for sharing -- they always leave you wanting more. The staff is ALWAYS friendly and helpful. I just wish they were open more often! It's hard to get in! read more

I was very excited to get reservations here, as I have heard nothing but good things since moving to the area 3 months ago. My boyfriend and I went with another couple and we had reservations at 7. The restaurant's atmosphere was loud and dark but inviting. What surprised me was the fact that we had to wait until 7:30 for a 7PM reservation because our table was not ready. The hostess gave us no indication of when the table was supposed to be ready so we decided to grab a drink at the bar. I ordered a penicillin, one of my favorite drinks, and my boyfriend ordered a south side. His drink was "decent" but mine was hardly a cocktail. As someone who orders a penicillin at nearly every restaurant that has it on the menu, I could tell there was no scotch in it. Matter of fact, I have had penicillins from restaurants that I had to describe what it was in order for them to make it and it was better than at Good Luck. After getting seated, we were told that it was a tapas restaurant, which we were not prepared for, but nonetheless, we were excited to try the food. We ordered the baked goat cheese, pizza, artichokes, tortellini, and sticky lamb ribs. The waiter said we had to order everything "up front", insinuating that we could not add anything on later. This is odd for a tapas restaurant, which typically allows patrons to order food as they go. Additionally, we were told the food would come out "in courses" with the goat cheese and pizza coming first, the artichokes and the tortellini coming second, and the lamb ribs to finish it off. The goat cheese and pizza had good flavor and size for appetizers. The artichokes and tortellini had good flavor as well but were small for our group. The lamb ribs were small and came cold (not room temperature, but almost as if it was in the fridge and they put it under a lamp to heat it). Additionally, because the restaurant was so dark, there were numerous occasions where the waiter almost grabbed our food or drinks before we finished with them because he couldn't see if we were done with them (as an aside, our waiter Louis was fantastic). However, at this point, I was disappointed. Nothing was as great as advertised. We've been to better restaurants in the Rochester area and would probably not recommend as quickly as the other reviews may suggest. read more

What a neat restaurant. Very large warehouse type of space, unique for Rochester. Great cocktail menu, the wine selection is also very good. i would definitely go for the Justin Cab next time. The food while not really Tapas is meant to be shared. We started with a nice selection of cheese and meets, served with a delicious pickled Fennel. Then the Chopped salad had a really nice combination of super fresh greens and nuts. For dinner we shared Squid and Stripped Sea Bass. The Bass was awesome, cooked perfectly with a nice salty flavor. The Squid was very tender, served in a romanesco sauce with house made chorizo. The service was very good and the atmosphere while not romantic was very cool. On the way out i saw a whole roast chicken, this will definitely be on my plate for the next visit. read more

One of the best restaurants I've been to in my life, and certainly the best New American cuisine I've had in the United States. Very smooth table service as well. Their burger is simple, but executed to perfection and therefore delicious. The bibb lettuce salad was a delightfully fresh assortment of flavors and textures. We also enjoyed a fish dinner which is no longer on the menu--so I'm forgetting the name of the dish--but it came on an absolutely scrumptious bed of tomatoes, sherry, and fiddlehead ferns. The duck toasts braised in confit were probably my favorite treat of the evening. A nice way to enjoy some rich duck flavor without the cost. Good Luck's craft cocktails are the best I've had. Their use of fresh herbs is in their drinks is refreshing and tasty. Dessert was a little too sweet for me, but very well made. The environment is not for everyone, but I absolutely love it. I'm all about that high-end-hipster-barn feel. I love the rustic wood interior, exposed duct work, mismatched chairs and silverware, and creative low lighting. The family style tables are fun as well. Expense is an issue, but with the large family style portions I found the prices to not be excessive. My BF and I dined at Good Luck for my birthday, but we forgot to reserve a table. BIG MISTAKE. We ended up waiting for over an hour to be served. Luckily, the staff and the manager were very accommodating, and gave us a free dessert for our time. The food was excellent. I particularly enjoyed the red lentils. I also heard a lot of good things about the Good Luck Burger, so I had to try that. I'm happy to say it did not disappoint. All and all I had a good time and the food was delicious. In the future, I would come here with a group of friends vs. a 1:1 date. It's a bit too noisy for a romantic evening. But in any case, I will make sure to reserve a table beforehand. read more

We went as a group of five. Ordered a wide variety of food, like squid tentacles, the good luck burger, board noodles with rabbit, grilled asparagus, and a few others. Everything was delicious, every scrap was consumed, and we left a little room for some desserts, which were exceptional as well. Everything here is meant to be shared, and it comes out of the kitchen when it's ready, so just be prepared for that. Also, plan ahead. I have tried to go back again twice, but both times couldn't bear the wait time (1 1/2 hours). It's great that they are popular. Hopefully they will be around for a long time. read more

Good Luck has some good things going for it: the space is chic, the menu is inventive, the craft cocktails are unique and often well-executed, and the staff gives excellent service for private room dinners (including creativity and flexibility in menu planning). The restaurant's shortcomings are few: their interpretation of classic cocktails is lacking or inconsistent, burgers should never be grossly oversized and hacked up for sharing, and they don't publicize their special events well so I always miss them (much to my regret). read more

Let me tell you... The Crew is amazing!!! Meghann the hostess is simply warm and charming and very pretty. Matt took care of us like family. When i was not sure what to order they brought their oxtail, which was fantastic, and will beat any other restaurant i tried, in the US or Europe. The Fries were perfect. Adding ketchup should be considered a crime. The smokehouse was very good, except that the Texas sausage was bland and a bit fatty for me. The pulled pork was to die for... Arghhhhh. Good Luck is by far the most incredible dining experience you can encounter in this city. My friends and I once made a 15 person reservation five months in advance.
