I come to The LAB every now and then to eat delicious vegan food and always pass by this place. I'm usually too full to even step foot inside, but this time I made sure to stop in before eating. I purchased the triple berry donut, which they said was the most popular. It was very pretty, with a red glaze and berries on top. I was starving so I took some big bites while I was waiting for my food. The donut was a nice, soft brioche and the glaze was yummy and not too sweet. The berries were fresh and added a burst of flavor. I enjoyed it very much, but it's a pretty expensive donut at $5.50. With tax and tip it was close to $7.00. I'd likely try a couple more flavors when I'm back in the area. read more

Holy smokes! Each pastry is a unique work of art. Beautifully displayed. They cost almost $5 each plus tax, so don't show up with change only. However, on vacation, we'll do this. Vegan options, GF options, etc. They also wrap each item separately in paper for preservation of the beauty, but that didn't last long. After a savory meal at Habana, we walked around the lab anti mall and stumbled upon Good Town Donuts for dessert. We opted for the vegan mini donut box which had a sampler of 6 of their flavors for $12. None of us are vegan so we were initially suspicious about what to expect.  The sampler box included mango coconut, matcha, lemon poppyseed, raspberry, and chocolate. I would say that Good Town Doughnuts is the gold standard when it comes to quality donuts. It's a small shop at the edge of the Lab, but it's never empty. The donuts are on the bigger side (which I'm a fan of), so a donut with substance is what you pay for. I've tried many of the items here, but I'd say that the vegan matcha is really what you want to come for. Heard about this place from my Yelppy friend and was glad I finally got to check this place out. It's a pretty hidden little spot in LAB "Ani-Mall that if you blink you will pass it up. This is a one man operation, a sweet Japanese gentleman behind the mask. They have a vast assortment of donuts cinnamon rolls and cakes to choose from. The best part is many of them are vegan and they look beautiful too. They have a modern take here so if you are just wanting a cake or glazed donut this may not be your place. Here they have a fancy assortment of flavors from matcha and toasted or mango coconut to triple berry and raspberry pistachio. Even a strawberry and double chocolate too. If your like me and like the sound of all of them it's kind of hard to choose. I would say after trying out a bunch of them it's hard to go wrong with whatever you choose. These donuts do not come cheap. My Grandmother would have balked at spending $5 for one donut but then again the same goes for a fancified coffee pour over for the same price. Well the goods are well executed here so I say you deserve at least one of them in your life.. My favorites are the raspberry pistachio and the toasted coconut. The coconut one is a major coconut bomb shell so you got to like coconuttiness. If you do then this is a winner. The raspberry one is more tart and less sweet. Very similar to the triple berry. They make these little bunt type cake donuts that are awesome too. I had the orange lemon one and it was so moist and full of citrus flavor. My only choice I wasn't a fan was the green tea. Too grassy and sweet for my taste. Beautiful green though and maybe good for getting in your antioxidants... They also serve coffee here both regular and decaf. You can't get any specialty coffee drinks but there is a coffee shop around the corner that does. They also sell different vintage items including some face covering scarves if that's your thing. There are two primary things I go out of my way to try when visiting different cities: Coffee and Donuts. Preferably the super boujee, over priced, vegan and/or gluten free donuts like Good Town has. This donut shop is located inside The Lab in Costa Mesa. It's right off the freeway and central to the anti-mall, meaning you will have to park around the grounds and walk through the courtyard or other shops to find it; not visible from the street. You can look at the menu pictures on Yelp before but they do seem to interchange most flavors pretty often. When I visited they had, to name a few, s'mores, matcha, lemon poppyseed, Nutella, cinnamon crunch, and berry flavors. All vegan, no gluten free options. They also had coffee and tea to go. Unless you're a party of two, there is no comfortable seating inside the donut shop, but there is a community courtyard with bean bags, tables and swing chairs right outside you can hang out at. There's also The Nook coffee shop right across the way if you want craft coffee to go with your fancy $5 vegan donut. I got the lemon poppyseed donut for $4 something and though I really prefer cake style donuts rather than fried doughy fatness, I couldn't put it down! The lemon zest was so fresh and every bite came with a new burst of flavor. I walked in feeling ridiculous for spending that much on something I didn't think I'd like and walked out with a huge smile and all my expectations pleasantly exceeded. Because I only tried that one flavor I couldn't tell you if this is THE go-to spot in the area for "craft donuts," but I can however recommend that if you're in the area and want a yummy treat that's not totally terrible for you, you should come here and try the lemon poppyseed. read more

First time stopping in for something sweet ! We had the double chocolate crunch & Nutella along with some cinnamon sugar donut holes. Double crunch was so good ! It has cake like texture but was not crumbly or messy. Perfect chocolate sweetness. The Nutella was okay it is only glazed with a Nutella center filling. The Asian lady was so polite and informative. I had the vegan Triple Berry doughnut. It is bit pricey, $6-7 I forgot, but it was a treat and not what I am accustomed to. Been thinking about these donuts lately, and thought I'd add some photos of the gluten free options they offer because I don't see anybody talking about them. The gluten free matcha is my favorite, but the strawberry and chocolate are close behind. They also have a banana nut flavor which reminds me of banana bread, but those GF matcha hold a special place in my heart. They're dense in the best way, not too sweet, and have a mild yet earthy matcha taste. My boyfriend always tries something different of the regular variety when we go, and has never had a complaint. My schedule hasn't allowed me to come back, but I'm dying to do so soon. read more

Another hidden gem in the Lab!! I've had my eyes on trying this shop out for some time now, and just recently got to try it. The customer service here is great; the staff is so friendly and efficient. We got the Mini Vegan Donuts! Flavors were Triple Berry, Mango Coconut(?), Matcha, Lemon Poppyseed, Raspberry Pistachio, Chocolate Crunch. They have a lot of flavors & a good selection of vegan donuts! With the minis, you get six different flavors to try! My favorite was the lemon poppyseed and least favorite was the matcha. I loved the zesty tanginess of the lemon glaze. The matcha was a bit bitter for me but if you're a fan of an unsweetened matcha flavor, this may be for you. It's really awesome how the vegan donut is so much like a regular donuts but way better. The donuts were so good, I forgot they were vegan. Parking can be a bit difficult during weekends and peak hours, but the lab has a decent amount of parking spaces. Usually, I don't like thick cakey donuts and the vegan donuts I've had before were very thick. Not these ones. These were light and fluffy like Krispy Kreme but better. You couldn't even tell they were vegan at all. I got the 6 mini donut box because it had most of their flavors for $12-ish, kind of like a sampler box! I love sampler anything cuz I'm indecisive. My favorite was actually the lemon poppy, very tangy and refreshing. The raspberry pistachio was also tangy but more mellow and sweet. The blackberry one honestly tasted like a mix of the two. Amazing quality donuts that are unique in flavors, can't believe they are vegan~ My BF and I made an impulsive purchase here while we were strolling around the anti-Lab Mall. Interior itself is small donut shop similar to a pop up store. We got the Vegan Raspberry Pistachio ($4.5). The donut was light, but dense at the same time. Surprisingly it wasn't too sweet, the tart raspberry was super refreshing at flavorful. Wish there was more pistachio flavor, the tartness of the raspberry most likely overpowered the pistachios sprinkled on top. They have other unique flavors such as mango coconut, ginger apple cake, and maple walnut. Decided to cruise in after lunch at Seabirds for dessert and I was super excited to try them out! I was craving donuts for quite some time and thought this was great timing to be in such close proximity. Shop is tiny! The top row of donuts were mostly vegan while the bottom row had your typical fare. From chocolate to classic glazed, it had it all and more! I was really indecisive and thought I had narrowed it down to matcha, pistachio or raspberry, but lemon poppyseed jumped ahead. The selection was vegan, but it was like a regular doughnut with a bit more chew. What I really enjoyed about the lemon was that they infused lemon juice into the batter, so you get the citrusy notes in every bite. The sweetness of the glaze balanced the tang and I couldn't stop after the first bite. I inhaled it within 5 minutes. If you're super indecisive, I would suggest getting the mini mixed box. Unlike certain places, Good Town does not play on the cheap "novelty" of something new and weird (an example of this is Portland's Voodoo Donuts, which has created a sensationalism over its novelty shapes and combinations, during Portland's boom in popularity of the mid-2000s, right when this city turned from industrial/rough around the edges to just Uncool). Good Town takes the best ingredients and have pride in their craft, to create a delicious donut, with the conscience of a vegan. We walked out of the nearby Buffalo Exchange and the cute storefront caught our attention. Upon investigation, we were in love with what we found: a lovely variety of donuts. There were so many unique flavors and combinations that we couldn't choose right away. There was one staff member working the front of the house and baking the donuts. He was really courteous and patient with us even though we came in closer to closing. We ended up deciding on a set of Nutella donuts (pictured) and a strawberry chocolate donut.
