Goodman, you should be ashamed of yourself. Today I came into your store to buy a 1 1/2' ft table top Christmas tree. Last year this tree cost $19.99. This year the price is doubled. Hey guess what we are not all millionaires. Your price gouging is obscene as this is not an incremental increase. To think that this tree next year will be $60 or more is ludacris. Goodman's you can take your prices and you know what you can do with them. I think it's important to support small businesses but when this is the case, I choose not to. I won't be shopping in your store again not if you're going to screw your customers with the prices. read more

Just now heard from Goodman's with the excuse that prices are visible on a beam over the potting soil. Not true that day. Prices were no where to be seen which is why I asked for help in the first place. And! Got absolutely no where with the 3 employees who were sitting around the gardening check-out counter, whining about their jobs and how much they hated being there. I know what happened that day. As luck would have it, we lost power this holiday week-end and we were unable to find an electrician to come out asap. After doing some research, I determined that the problem was due to an arc fault breaker which was only 2+ years old. I got in touch with Aslam at Goodman's who found us the correct replacement part and provided detailed instructions on how to replace a arc fault breaker with a standard breaker. As I was putting away my Christmas tree, I wanted to fix the base for next year. This year, the tree was skinnier than the 4 rods could hold. I wanted longer rods to hold trees of all sizes in the future. I thought I could just pick up premade rods, but they were all too short. With the help of George and Richard, I was able to create a design that works for the base. I could not have figured it out without their help. They were kind, helpful, and very patient. I mostly shop online, but I will be making trips to this Goodman for the items they carry because of this experience. It was a wonderful experience to meet two people who like their jobs, are knowledgeable, and are willing to spend the time to help customers (even though I was not purchasing expensive items). read more

The two stars is being given becuase they had everything that we were looking for, although we needed our google maps inside to find it all. This place is completely disorganized and good luck finding anyone to help. Three times I attempted to make contact with an employee and they turned and went walked other way "literally". We went into the paint section looking for help and encountered 3 workers watching a video on thier cell phone, not once did they ask "can we help you", quite the opposite they looked at us as if we where bothering them and we had to approach them and ask "can you help us". Needed a garbage disposal and went all the way from MV to Novato Costco and had to buy a standard not preferred garbage disposal and was just bummed -thinking who else has garbage disposals.? As I was driving home I had that Aha moment of my local Ace. Called them and sure enough they had ones from $103-206! Went in and was thoroughly briefed on what I would need and in the end, they had the mid range nice one exactly like I already have- sitting there. So great! AND I'm supporting my local ACE Hardware~ this one in particular has "everything" which I sometimes forget. Faster than Amazon and Cheaper and better than Costco! I purchased two items that didn't work for us and tried to return them the next day. The store refused to refund because one of the items didn't have the original clear plastic wrap and the other item looked touched. Of course we opened them to find out that they didn't work. They said no return since the items couldn't be re-sold. I feel that a store should guarantee their merchandise. If something doesn't work, it should be returned to the manufacturer, not be back on the shelf. This experience taught me that in the future I need to drive longer distances to a different hardware store. read more

Awful service on multiple occasions. Frustrating because I want to support a local store but just doesn't seem worth it.

So, went here for a few supplies. I am a 61 year old man, self employed and successful enough that I don't need to steal. Anyhow, here I was out in the lumberyard looking for one 4' post 4x4, to mount a house number to our home on. I looked around, then actually I saw a perfect scrap piece in a scrap pile. I look around and there wasn't any help to be seen. Knowing I had more things to get inside the store. I was carrying the small post out and around to the front, so I could leave it with the register and continue shopping. As I walked just through the gate to the lumberyard. Some guy that works there. Jumps out and stops me, in an aggressive, accusingly way... Asking me where I think I'm going? I tell him that I was about to go around front and see if I could leave the scrap post by the register while I kept shopping, inside. He doesn't just stop at telling me I can't leave through that direction. And all the while I stay calm and am kindly explaining my intentions to him. He proceeded to accusingly tell Me that there is a camera watching me and he is watching me. And, that it doesn't look good what i am doing."Doesn't look good for you" He tells me in an aggressive way. Plus then he starts saying in an accusatory way: "You watched me go right in this shed! You saw me go in here and tried leaving..." I kindly told him that "No I had not seen him go in the shed, or I'd asked his help." He still argued and told me "Yes you did see me go in the shed." What the heck? I calmly told him I am no thief and I wasn't trying to steel a scrap post. He says " Oh I'm not saying that" the hell he wasn't! I am a local and we shop here purposely instead of Home D. ( Trying to support our local stores ) I apologized several times and he kept on. Needless to say, I am dropping my previously posted good review. And whether or not I was making a mistake walking out and around. This employee was way out of line. I should have made a bigger deal of this at that time. He's lucky I didn't contact his boss or police. It was clearly him discriminating against me because he could.. I certainly prefer giving my business to Goodman's as opposed big chains like Home Depot. This home/gardens/all-things-handy supply store has been a Marin institution since I was a kid. That being said, this store can be a bit difficult to navigate. It isn't always easy to find what you're looking for, and the aisles can be somewhat claustrophobic. I came in here recently to purchase a cobweb duster for my deck. I wandered through the store for 10 minutes in search of this appliance, but I really didn't know where to look first (garden supplies, home cleaning supplies, something else?). Plus, the aisle categories are hard to read. I finally gave up and asked an employee for some direction. The first guy I talked to kind of shrugged me off and pointed to one side of a store (not a specific aisle, mind you) and said "you might find something like that over there." Not exactly the most helpful customer service. I had to ask another employee who finally steered me to the correction aisle. Long story short, I finally found what I needed. The cobweb duster cost me $10, and now I'm well on my way to defeating the spider situation on my deck. So in the end, Goodman's came through for me again. They have pretty much everything you could possibly need for your home & garden. Just be prepared for a bit of a scavenger hunt. read more

DANGEROUS PARKING LOT -- And the manager at Goodman didn't care one bit that my tiny Mini was almost crushed by a huge pick-up truck. I am still very rattled. Goodman allows the owners of the food truck to block the view of drivers in the parking lot yet show distain when I suggested they have a responsibility to do their best to have a safe parking lot. I could not see the huge pick up truck that did not slow down for the STOP sign and luckily I was able to brake fast enough and did not get hit. The manager said with a smile, " Since we put a stop sign in, what happens in the parking lot is not our responsibility.'' There have been crashes at this spot with the stop sign installed and Goodman does not care. They don't care that many more are almost getting hit. I lived in Mill Valley for 17 years and was a regular customer of Goodman Lumber. I will never go back. Also, I agree that today the men in hardware were very rude. Sad and scary to see a local business turn callous towards the safety of its customers. read more

This is specifically for the gardening dept manager. She was incredibly rude in her dealing with me, Im not sure what she had against me. There was a sale plant which was clearly marked as 30% off, it was also not particularly healthy and needed a lot of care to get it to recover. She flat out refused to give me the very clearly marked discount. I could understand if it was a healthy good plant but this one was clearly neglected like a majority of their plants. The entire place is littered with fallen trees and bushes, and most of the plants have spider mites, caterpillars, or other pests. I'm guessing its due to her management. read more

This time, I just asked the rude jerk to refund me and I drove to home depot. Goodman's price was $14 and Home Depot was $7.50. A hardware store with every possible and conceivable tool and building supply. I would be willing to bet there is nothing that you ask for that they can't find or don't have. Nothing! Try and stump them! Only snaffu to this place is that you need a GPS or, at the very least, a USGS map to navigate in here. The store is a maze of aisles and corners and rooms - floor to ceiling - and in some cases things are hanging from the ceiling. Thank goodness they have knowledgable staff and plenty of them. The very first time I went in here my first thought was "OMG I HOPE WE DON'T HAVE AN EARTHQUAKE WHILE I'M IN HERE. THEY WILL NEVER FIND MY BODY!" But I've been back and I've survived. Goodman is just as the name says: good! It's part of the ACE Hardware group, yet it keeps the independent shop feel quite well. I come to this place for any kind of household-related items. Seriously, they have it all: from the screw that you're missing for setting up that shelf to a package of pectin for cooking homemade jams. This place is like a labyrinth and you might need some help finding exactly what you need, but the folks who work here are friendly and will point you in the right direction. This is a good old-fashioned hardware store and I appreciate that it is easy to get to and has a lot of parking. There was something wrong with the item I was asking about. Instead of being nice, this lady just said, well you cannot buy it and while walking away showed me others. She had an attitude and was completely rude. One big problem? The employee's at the desk (one of particular) are SO rude. I have dealt with them twice. They don't help and act like you are bothering them. It is the biggest turn-off. They make me feel rushed. I needed help at the large desk and they were acting like I was interrupting their private conversations. read more

Great little place to find what's needed for basic repairs and maintenance! I've picked up screen, breakers, safety equipment and tools for work at home and on my job. The staff is helpful when you ask for assistance and will show you alternatives as needed. The only down side is it's a confusing layout and you do need to ask where things are located. They also have random holiday decorations all over the store for sale which is fun! read more

While I usually try to give the local business' my business, experiences like this make it difficult. I had a piece of glass cut about 2 weeks ago. I finally found the time to remove the old glass and install the new one. I got the old one out and scraped the old putty out of the frame and was now ready for the new glass. I understood the glass and what do I find? The new glass had a small crescent that was cut in at one end. I thought at first it maybe broke in transit but there was no glass to be found inside the wrapping and it was a nice clean cut not rough like it would be if it had broken. I returned to the store and showed the employee. He refused to do anything saying that it was impossible to tell when it was broken. I explained that this was clearly not broken after the fact and he could see for himself. No such luck. Such a shame to lose my Goodwill over a cheap $7 piece of glass. read more

In light of Covid-19 It would be awesome if the receptionist at Goodman's was helpful. If he actually cared about the customer and spent more than two nano seconds listening to what the customer's request is before pushing the transfer button. His instantaneous auto-transfering of phone calls is so unproductive and rude not to mention that the call never reaches a human again. If you have inventory questions and are concerned about Covid-19? May as well go back to Home Depot. While not local and impersonal, it's much better customer service. BTW, The Ace Hardware website is totally faulty - it is not possible to do online curbside pick up...so other Ace Hardwarestores will answer questions over the phone. Goodman's receptionist must have been trained to say "go to the website" or to transfer the customer into the phone black hole where no one ever answers again. read more
