I don't know which was worse, the place or the date. Wait... yes, I do... it was the place. At least my date was clean. The parking situation is awful, street parking in a city neighborhood. I loved it. I miss living in Chicago. Horrible parking is just a sign of a good neighborhood. Unfortunately, Goosetown Tavern is not good enough for the parking. Going in, you are greeted by a stuffed bear (Grizzly, I think, but maybe brown). A 6 foot stuffed bear, posed in a snarling, growling, gonna rip your throat out way. And it was dusty. But that was all that greeted us. We made our way back to a booth in the back, because it was fairly full. Everything about the place was dirty. The cute light fixtures were grimy. The floor was disgusting. It just felt gross, as if the dirt and grime hung in the air and covered everything. My date and I sat there silently while we waiting for service. It probably wasn't as long as it seemed, but it sure wasn't speedy. The rest of the place was not silent. There was music from overhead, playing a little too loudly, and the other patrons were quite loud. The staff didn't have uniforms or shirts or even matching colors. They were just in their street clothes. I only knew our server worked there because she came from behind the bar. She excused herself (didn't apologize) for not being speedy by telling us that there were no servers on duty. But there were two other women who seemed to be working behind the bar. The size of the bar didn't seem to require more than one bartender. I ordered a soda. My date asked what beers they had. And this bartender who was being forced to serve answered, "We have lots of beers. What do you want?" My date asked if they had Corona and she said, "No." After an awkward moment, she went on to mention two other beers. And then said, "Do you want a tap beer?" My date asked what was on tap. She gave a huffy little sigh and looked over her shoulder, I guess to try to read what the tap handles said. Then she walked away. She didn't go very far (only like 10 feet), but she just walked away. Then she spoke to us from ten feet away, reading off a menu. She mentioned a few of the tap beers and then it occurred to her to bring the menu to us. Crazy idea, but she gave it a shot. And what do you know, it worked. Turns out that they have some apple ciders on tap. That's pretty cool. I would never ever go back to that dirty little pit again to try it, but it's was pretty cool. I don't think I've ever seen cider on tap before. My date ordered one. Our server brought our drinks promptly and left again. Then she was back in a minute to ask for a credit card. Because there were no servers, it was too hard for her to write up checks, so she was just going to run a tab. She took my card and then returned promptly with it. Then I spent the next 20 minutes hoping my date would finish his cider (He gave me a sip and it was really good). But instead, he showed me like every picture he had on Facebook. When I could take it no more, I went to the bathroom. It was just as dirty as the rest of the place and covered in graffiti. The toilet paper dispenser was broken. The walls and floor were stained and dirty. It was gross. I would have taken a picture, but it was too dim in there. Which was probably for the best. I don't even want to know what I would have seen if it was well lit in there. I started back to the table and was happy to see that my date was close to finishing his drink. Just as I was walking up to the booth, the server was walking away from the booth next to ours. I walked right up to her and tried to get her attention, but she kept moving with extreme purpose. I don't know what that purpose was, but it was so consuming that she didn't see or hear me when I followed her to the bar, trying to get her attention. She sped along in whatever duties she was doing. At least, I assume she had duties that were consuming her, though I didn't see her to anything besides ignore me and walk very quickly. So, I walked down the bar where all three bartenders were hanging out. The first one, my server, walked away from me again, without noticing me. The other two came over to me. I told one of them that I would like to close out my tab. She walked away while the third one responded to my request by asking my name, which I got to shout across three patrons while she stood at the register, which made me a little uncomfortable. Then my server walked up and looked at me eagerly. I told her the other bartender was already helping me. She smiled and wandered of with more consuming purpose. I signed for the tab, got my date, and left as quickly as possible. This was a horrible date made worse by the location of it. I can warn you away from Goosetown Tavern, but you're on your own to find a good date. read more

I stopped to check out what Goosetown had to offer during my tour of the Colfax bars while in the lovely city of Denver. Since we only stopped in long enough to have a drink, I didn't get to try to wonderful pizza my friend had been raving about, but it will give me a new goal to attain when I mosey on back to Denver. This bar didn't have anything that really stood out in my mind, but it did have an awesomely friendly staff, and some pretty decent drink specials. And it had just the right amount of dirty dive bar ambiance to make it enjoyable, without feeling like you need to shower when you leave. I will definitely be back! And this time I am bringing an empty stomach with me as well, because whatever they had cookin' sure did smell delightful! read more

I really only have one thing to say about this place: when someone asks for a glass of water at a bar and two bartenders just walk away in disgust, and you have to wait for a third to finally agree to give you a glass of water, that is not okay. My party of five had already ordered multiple beers. Is it a crime to ask for water? Is it a crime to want to keep oneself hydrated? No, it is not. I am sorry that you aren't going to be making money off of giving me a glass of water. I will say one other thing--your pizza sucks. Try cooking it longer next time. Once, after a concert at the Bluebird (in the dead of winter), a sober friend was told she was too drunk to come in because she'd slipped on some ice right outside the front door. It was frustrating to have to get the whole group together and bail just because the bouncer couldn't differentiate between slipping and drunk behavior. (Also, is it that hard to salt your sidewalks, particularly when you're expecting potentially heavy foot traffic?) The last time I was in, I experienced some of the worst service I've ever had in my life. The drinks were fine, but I generally like mine garnished with a bit less attitude. My friend and I walked in carrying two empty wine glasses. Immediately, they were confiscated by the bartender, who proceeded to give me a lecture about how they usually just call the cops. (It was totally a mistake on our part. We wandered in carrying empty wine glasses after an evening walk.) He also told me that they would shut down the bar if the cops found me with these wine glasses (hardly), and who was going to feed his kids then? I was mortified, and apologized profusely before finishing my drink and walking out without grabbing my wine glasses, since it wasn't worth another long-winded lecture. I get that the cops have been all over Colfax lately, but I didn't think that this was worth quibbling over, so I called the State of Colorado Liquor and Tobacco Enforcement Division this morning, and guess what? Bar crawling down Colfax can be a lot of fun. Enter bar #3, Goosetown Tavern. The guy at the door, Seth is a very nice guy checking ID's and with a welcoming smile. Bartenders are very nice and chatty, some great looking eye candy for both of the genders to behold. Back to the bar, a couple great late night HH specials. I was enjoying a draft beer, one of my drinking companions was enjoying the PBR and shot of Jameson for $6 special. Not a bad a deal if I say so myself. The highlight besides the wonderful ambiance was the food. I know you're doubting me right now, the food at the bar - YES - the food was delicious. On the recommendation of Seth we decided on the Chicken Artichoke Dip Sandwich with a side of pasta salad and the Open Faced Tuna Melt Sandwich with tots. The Chicken sandwich was succulent sliced chicken on ciabatta topped with warm Artichoke dip. Best drinking sandwich I would possibly think of - it should be wrong to eat something so heavenly. The Tuna Melt was okay, nothing to write home about and I definitely wouldn't order it again knowing I could have the Chicken Sandwich again. There are sooo many good indie shows on their way to the Bluebird (Josh Ritter, Jackie Green, Blitzen Trapper, Akron/Family to name a few). Everytime I make my way down the 'Fax, these facts will stand-up: the Goosetown Tavern is one of the coolest, hippest and tastiest 'hood bars in town. Those bastards at Goosetown tavern charged me an extra dollar towards their tip. I tipped them 20% already. I wonder how many people they do that to everyday? If they did that to every single person that came into the door, everyday, 7 days a week. That's so much money. They must know no one will call to complains about a dollar. We stopped in here last night for a few drinks. We had received 2 of their promotional coupons for free Colorado flights which we were excited to try. I liked the vibe when we first walked in. It turned sour from there. It was Halloween, but being a Wednesday it wasn't very busy. The bartender, Erin came over to take our order. When she saw our free drink coupons she went back behind the bar and never came back to help us. Despite our efforts to get her attention, she avoided eye contact at all costs. Eventually she asked the other bartender (I didn't catch her name but she was also in a red wig) to come help us. She was friendly as she came over, but when she saw our drink coupon she blatantly turned around and said, "Hey, Erin..." and flipped off the other bartender. RIGHT IN FRONT OF US. It was very awkward and rude. To the owners... these two bartenders clearly do NOT care about the promotions you run to attract business to your bar. We just moved to Denver and the Goosetown is in our neighborhood. Unfortunately the bad experience with the staff will keep us from coming back. read more

Absolutely frustrating to play Geeks Who Drink here. Even if it weren't for the LOUD drunk as hell douchey team at the end of the bar, the sound system sucked. There are two, count them - two - audio rounds, the whole being able to hear thing is kind of important. Other than being a poor place for trivia (at least tonight) I can't believe the disgusting amount of pink puke crusted on the toilet seats. It's Sunday night at 7pm. Either a) someone already was trashed here earlier today or b) they haven't cleaned the toilets since someone puked their last night or c) worse. This was the most obvious grossness but far from the only example. The entire bathroom screamed "ICK!!" I love nachos and I couldn't get into theirs. It was appropriately cheesy and included black beans, but the cheese was your standard Kraft shredded kind which goops up on you after being microwaved. The sour cream had a nasty skin on it. I did think it ingenious that they but a tortilla at the base of the nachos. Not only do you have extra yumminess, but they don't have to clean the crusty cheese off the plate. The wait staff was generally kind and patient. I really wish they would have cracked the skulls of the loud assholes tanking the trivia game for everyone (one team straight up left), but I can see their point of view. I did have to flag them down after our first round, but they didn't seem bothered that I had done so. After trivia was over, the scene greatly improved. There was almost no one left in the bar so we decided to shoot some pool. The pool tables aren't regulation size, which I find cute and generally improves my game. I get it Goosetown. You're a neighborhood bar. You were once in my neighborhood and I went to you on a somewhat regular basis. I would say I'd run out of fingers and toes if I counted how many times I've been here over the course of a couple years, but you know what? I'm still not your number one fan. I know better than to come here to get food before a concert, because it won't be ready in time. In fact, the food here isn't really all that great. What I do like is the beer selection. It is, after all, a tavern, so I would hope the beer would be good. In general, the service is good. If you know the bartender, the service is fantastic, but in my opinion, anyone in foodservice should treat all their customers like regulars (or the regulars they hope they'll become). I actually come here a lot more often to use the ATM to get cash to spend at my favorite bar in all of Denver: the PS Lounge. Besides that, when I do actually grab a booth, I never order food. I treat it like a bar, plain and simple. When I do that, I generally have a really good time! read more

I am changing my review pretty drastically for one main reason. The past two times I have been to the Goosetown I have ordered food that took waaaaay too long to get. The first time Megan W. and I ordered salads and garlic cheese bread. We were there an hour before the show we were going to see started. We had to tell them to cancel our order eventually because we had to go to the show and so we never got to eat dinner. The second time was last night and one of use ordered a slice of pizza, the other a quesadilla, me, I ordered wings. Apparently that was a bad choice. They brought out the pizza and the quesadilla and then said my wings would be ready soon. Well, "soon" at the Goosetown is about 45 minutes. So everyone had been done eating for like 20 minutes before I got my wings. I sort of thought they might comp the wings or at least my drink, but they didn't. I ate like 3 wings in the 5 minutes we had until the show started. And by the way, each time there were 2 bartenders and like 7 customers so my last sentence of my previous review is totally negated. Moral of the story: if you eat at Goosetown go at least 2 hours before you have to be anywhere else. Better yet, eat at the Atomic Cowboy or Enzo's End. The food is just as good, if not better and delivered in half the time. read more

I used to spend many a nights drinking at the Goosetown Tavern, back in my restaurant serving days. I always had a ton of fun, mostly due to the company, but also because of the cool, laid back atmosphere and cheap drinks. Fast forward 4 years... I returned recently with a friend, for pre-show drinks and food. The drinks were pretty cheap still, service was okay, but the food was not great. We shared the artichoke dip and a pizza. I was not a fan of the dip because it was really chunky and not creamy at all. Very strange and unpleasant consistency for me. The pizza wasn't horrible, but something that I'd probably never order again. This bar is in a great location for grabbing drinks before a show at the Bluebird, so I'll probably be back. It is a cool bar to hang out in, however, I'm going to save my money and skip the food next time. read more

So the Goosetown is my regular place for Geeks Who Drink trivia, as it is close to home and it gives my "team" something to feel good about all week when we win. In other words, I pretty much have dinner every Sunday night there. The food alone is one star, as the menu is pretty diverse and good. They have some pretty decent deals on the menu, and when we cash in our trivia winnings we often pay nothing for a group of people. Star two is because they pour Guinness correctly. Star three is for service, although I would throw another one in there if I wasn't in a cranky mood. Essentially this is bar service- the more crowded it gets, the less attention you receive. They seem to go through wait staff quickly, which can cause major ordering problems sometimes. I really think management should schedule an additional server for Sunday night trivia. But the regular bartenders are good, and if you order from the bar, and all at once, things seem to go smooth. Lack of stars go to the audio, as it is extremely hard to hear the questions even when the bar isn't full, and another star docked because their sugar and sweetener packets are ALWAYS melted rocks of nastiness. ***Edited Jan. 2009 The big new tvs are awful. Denver already has enough craptastic sports bars, and the place is packed enough without annoying Colfax trash wandering in to watch the game on trivia night. I hereby nominate this place as denver's "Best Place to Knit in Public" for 2008. Last week I finally got a chance to meet up with a local group of knitters. Not grandmas, mind you, but young, hip people like myself (ok so I am not really THAT hip but I like to tell myself that I am). We met up at the Lamb Shoppe only to find that it was double booked, so we high tailed it on over to Goosetown instead. Parking SUCKS, so if you can carpool, you really should do that, I ended up finding a place only a block away, but that was after driving around for about 15 minutes. After battling the parking demons, I walked in, plopped it down at a table and started knitting. This was, apparently, not out of place for the bar staff as NO ONE even batted an eyelash at us, rock! Even better, they have Smithwicks on tap. Oh Goosetown, will you marry me? You can serve me your tasty tasty goat cheese quesadilla and pizza every night for dinner, I'll balloon up to 400 pounds but I won't care because you will love and accept me for who I am, right? Service is slow but friendly. Walk on up to the bar and order your drink if you are really impatient. read more

Goosetown is a fantastic local bar right down the street from my house. For some reason, their PBR on draft tastes amazing - I don't know what it is, maybe they keep it super cold, but it's always best at Goosetown. I haven't had a ton of the menu, but everything I've had has been pretty delish. The spinach salad in particular (with the warm bacon vinaigrette) is especially yummy. Bartenders are super chill, the patio's small but nice, and the whole atmosphere is kick ass. read more

I went here one night after Benders Tavern for food, and to my surprise there was also acoustic entertainment! Awesome and hilarious, we could make requests, and the entertainer would mix in punk rock. For example, Holiday by Madonna, would be mixed with Holiday in Cambodia by Dead Kennedy's. It was fan freakin' tastic! I ordered a chicken jerk sandwich, served with large portions, it would have been awesome, it was missing the jerk. I waited and waited and no jerk. I even took it home with me, ate some later still no jerk. Sad to say it was not jerky at all. I was disappointed. The sandwich was good as a chicken sandwich. It needed more jerk. The place ruled other than that. It was a super relaxed environment, i had a great time there! I will be back! read more

Um...I went to a show at the Bluebird last night to see my beloved whisper rocker. I like to do this *groupie* thing where I try to get ALL my concert tickets signed by the performers. I was REALLY bummed when Joshua Radin didn't come out. After the show, Adam R. and I decided to go to the Goosetown Tavern for some beers. About 30 minutes went by and I look over his shoulder and who do I see???????? Joshua Radin. I was a dork and mozied on over to him and made him sign my ticket. I love the Goosetown Tavern. I've been patronizing the Goose for years, ever since Broadway Brewing closed down @ Broadway & Walnut. First, I'm a beer hound and the GT always has a most pleasant offering of beers presented with aplomb. You can't beat their Happy Hour prices, either. The kitchen puts out some stellar green chili and their soups make a wonderful additive on on chilly evening. Great service, too. Perhaps best is the cross-section of clientele - it's not succumbed to the chic uber-upscale of Lodo nor the drink and barf until you drop crowd. [although I've seen both groups represented here from time to time]There's real people who patronize this place and you owe it to yourself to snag a stool at the bar and check it out. read more

i love the Goosetown. They take the MyColfax card. Great service, great atmosphere, great drinks. Whether you're having drinks before a show at the Bluebird or are spending a lazy Sunday afternoon, the Goosetown is a welcoming place. The food is excellent -- we love and crave their pizza. It's a great place to hang out. Our one complaint is that some of the bartenders will "change the channel" after you've put cash into the jukebox....but that's been awhile and I know that managements changed, so maybe that's not the case anymore. On the other side, it's a place for everyone --- neighborhood types, hipsters going to shows -- heck, my parents met us there for lunch and they LOVED it (of course, the Goose had Fat Tire on Tap and that helped, but still).. Went to Goosetown since it was right across the street from Bluebird. I had a bad upper respiratory infection while traveling in Colorado and I was very excited to see that they had tomato bisque. I ordered their pretzel bread appetizer or whatever it was and got their soup and it was amazing. Apparently it was ugly christmas sweater night when I went in, and the staff were dressed with some great garb! The tomato bisque was AMAZING. Seriously, best tomato bisque I've ever had. I'm not sure if I wasn't too hungry because I was sick, but I couldn't finish all of my food. I sat awkwardly by myself at the bar, but staff was great. Nasty, dirty. I went here for the first time with my girlfriend about a week ago (on a Sunday night). The bartender was pretty friendly and made some decent drinks. They were ~$5/each. We went to the back to play pool..... The floors were covered in leaves (its not fall...) and the tables were COVERED in nasty bugs. The bugs were flying in our faces as we tried to shoot....ech. Started off a little bar crawl with the softball team here, and despite not really allowing myself to become as immersed in the establishment as I would have liked, I was quite impressed. Service was prompt, polite, and on point. Our lovely server remembered which beer I was drinking, even when I did not! And when we shifted to another part of the bar because of space concerns (our group grew like a chia pet) she seamlessly switched us over to the server in that part of the bar, so we'd continue to get top-notch service. For future reference the ladyfriend and I perused the menu and saw a wealth of pizza options, some great looking salads and a strangely high number of entree options with "jerk chicken" in it. I'll admit, I'd like to try the jerk chicken.... Food looks to be about a reasonable price, and at the very leased it's tricking me into thinking it's delicious. We'll have to wait and see if it is, for the next time we go back. Beer selection is large, and prices are reasonable. I don't completely remember exactly what our tab was, but I know it wasn't bad. The Goosetown was pretty solid, had good beer choices and prices, great looking food options, and far less goose shit on the floor than the name suggests. One of Denver's best bars. If you want a down to earth local bar with cheap drinks, this is it. The staff is friendly and remembers your name. The drinks are solid. The new outside seating is right on time. They feature a local artist every month on the walls. For a town that seems to keep getting younger on a Saturday night, this bar stays true to its neighborhood. Cheers! read more

I was in town visiting a friend and his place is right down the street from Goosetown so we decided to stop in for dinner. It was super quiet and a really nice place to hang out. We were in on a Monday night so I'm sure weekends are busier, but it was nice to have a warm, friendly place to go within walking distance of the house.They also had the football game on, which is always a plus in my book. Meg was bartending when we arrived and she took great care of us. She was super friendly and very patient as I sampled a few beers to decide which I wanted to eat. They had a good selection of beers on tap including several different ciders and a few seasonal brews. The food was good, too. I ordered a pizza, my friend ordered a sandwich, and we split an appetizer. The appetizer and pizza were slightly overcooked but the sandwich was good and nothing was inedible. We were full and happy with our food in the end. If Meg is working when you stop in, be sure to say hi and have her take care of you. She's the best! read more

Stopped in here for an impromptu happy hour drink after a slice across the street at Fat Sully's. I had a $3 Breck SummerBright and the little lady had a $3 Jack and Coke. Can't beat the prices, but sure can beat the pour and the service. When was the last time I had a bartender bust out a jigger to pour a Jack and Coke? I can't recall. But Goosetown must really value pouring a precise one ounce of whiskey over a solidly made drink or even a solid smile. $3 Breck was fine. $3 Jack and Coke was all ice and Coke. Save your money. Bar had a nice feel to it, but don't go there for a real drink. We should have stayed at the Atomic Cowboy. read more

I have been to Goosetown several times since I live just around the block and have had great experiences until most recently. Yes I understand that it's a bar and you get bar service, and yes I understand it gets busy and the bartenders are in a hurry. After being completely ignored for at least 15 minutes, the bartender comes over to tell us we need to order with him quickly because he is very busy. During the 30 seconds it takes to give him our order and take out our ID's, he is obviously annoyed and clearly expresses this with his sighs. I've been waiting tables for 10 years and never once have I told a customer I was busy and they needed to hurry up. RUDE. And especially on a Monday night when they weren't that busy. read more

I've found myself here many nights. New Years, Geeks Who Drink trivia, to play pool or just to get some good eats. Being on Colfax, Goosetown is on the edge of the strip I like to call "The Fax." A great area of chill bars, great bar type food which is a level above most bar establishments and a few shops. If you're down to see a show at the Bluebird, Goosetown is across the street and a perfect place to prime or meet up with friends before a show. Goosetown is just a comfortable bar that I frequent. NOTE: Be careful, the neighborhood parking is permit only in areas. Don't fall for the city's parking tickets. Just read the signs and double check. read more

I have gone to the Goosetown probably a dozen times or so. It was my go to bar for first dates. However, the too cool for you attitude of the bartenders, overpriced drinks and just generally douche bag atmosphere have worn not just me but my group of friends to the point where we avoid this bar at all costs. Here is one story to demonstrate the type of service you can expect here. I went to the Goosetown one night with about 8 friends after visiting a handful of microbreweries during the day. We all ordered drinks and were served. One of the female members of our group stated that she needed a water with her beer so she could sober up a bit. The bartender said that she did need to sober up. He then took her beer and another female member of the groups drink away. We all understand over serving laws. The bartender went too far when he tried to charge us for the beers that the girls never got to drink. Needless to say, there are plenty of bars within walking distance of this place, choose one of them. read more

So I like barbecue and this place has barbecue, specifically, they have burnt ends, and it is really good. Been here twice, almost tried the smoked wings, but man, did I mention the burnt ends? KC style, so good. Also, across the street from the Bluebird, so great location. Nice selection of gin and whiskey, average beer selection which includes some great local selections like Ratio and DBC. Outdoor seating, sometimes they have live music. Staff are chill, polite, they even explained the barbecue sauce options without me even asking. They have multiple types of gravy if you are into that sort of thing. Anywho, if you like BBQ go here. Stopped in before a show at the Bluebird for a beer during their happy hour the other day. I think I'd enjoy this place more if I lived nearby and wanted a place to get a cheap beer and hang out with people from the area. The service was on top of things, and knew many people by name. I was hoping for a better beer selection, but there were about 8 beers on tap with 2 empty. That said, my 90 Schilling was dirt cheap during their happy hour ($2.75). A decent neighborhood bar with cheap beer and pool tables. Probably a good place to hang out with friends after work or before going out. read more

Great beers on tap and nice and spicy wings. The HH deals look great, so I'm bummed to have missed that, but was satisfied nonetheless. The staff/ bouncers were great - I had a lot of fun talking with them as soon as we entered. It's nice that everyone was so amicable on what I'm sure was a busy Saturday. Although the place got pretty packed (Sat night), we still found seats at the bar. I was happy to have some great Wynkoop beers, which you don't really see at every bar these days. Their late night kitchen also stays open until 1am, so that's kind of a neat perk as well. This is a great place to go before a show at Bluebird theater. The food was good and there was a wide variety of Colorado beers on draft. I personally liked the Agave Wheat which just so happened to be the beer of the day and cost me $3 for a pint! I don't hate it! My brother and I had the chicken and waffles which he claimed were the "best he has ever had" which I can't quite argue against. It had a sausage gravy which added an extra delicious touch in this token sweet and savory combo. Overall the reason I am not giving this place a 5-star is because the service was slow at the start and the plates are slightly pricier than they should be ($11 for the chicken and waffles?) A great neighborhood bar in a neighborhood with more character than you'll find downtown. Of course, the best thing about the Goosetown is its location across from the Bluebird Theatre. A great place to pre-drink at cheap prices in a friendly atmosphere. Also, $1 PBRs. Need I say more? read more

Goosetown is probably my favorite bar in Denver. It's not pretentious at all, great bartenders, good beer, great affordable food, good prices and drink specials, comfortable seating. What's not to love? A real neighborhhod tavern with a cool but friendly crowd (largely due to proximity to Bluebird Theater). I've never regretted going to this place. only drawback is that on show nights at the Bluebird, it can be tricky to park. read more
