Place rips, good "dive bar" even though it's newish. They just have dive bar prices. Happy hour is Open-8 pm and you really can't beat it. They have a huge open garage door style window and a back patio. Occasionally they'll have shows outback so check their calendar before you go if you're looking to hang on the patio. What a cool bar. One of their ads is a poster, "Missing Cheap Drinks in RiNo - last seen on Thursday nights at the Matchbox." I went on a Tuesday night and the drinks were still cheap! Their HH runs daily open to 8pm. Wells are $4 (unheard of anywhere in the area). They also have delicious infused shots such as Green Tea, Spicy Pickle, and Horchata for $9. Super friendly bartender with a laid back clientele. Will definitely come back. read more

Having passed The Matchbox by on multiple occasions while bar/brewery hoping in RiNo, I decided it was long over due I stop in to check it out. SPACE: I'm going to agree with Abby S. In that they are striving for a dim grunge kinda look/feel. There's exposed brick all around, some art on the walls for sale, tables that fold down against the walls when they're busier, and a chalkboard featuring the drink specials. Plus they have a roll up door in the front for warmer weather and a patio out back (to the side). STAFF: Decently attentive. They weren't terribly busy while I was there, but the area around the bar was crowded. I had to wait a few for my tab after ordering my second drink to close out. DRINKS: I sipped on a Moscow Mule ($7) and a Princess Yum Yum from Denver Beer Co ($4). I was impressed at the cost for my craft beer. $4 is actually a terrific deal! The mule wasn't anything impressive. The specials are mostly generic beers with a shot of liquor. PRICE: Unfortunately, I didn't see anything saying that the have a $10 minimum on credit card purchases, but they do. Lame. I hate minimums. Pricing is pretty cheap for beers and their specials (which appear to be mostly generic beer with a shot of liquor). It's painfully average (quality and cost) for mixed drinks. Eh, now that I've been to The Matchbox, I wouldn't go out of my way to come back - unless it's for one of their drink specials or a cold brew. read more

I wish there were more places like this downtown Denver. It's basically you're classic, simple, divey type bar. They don't serve food, they have cheap drinks, no real seating to speak of inside, other than at the bar, so there is dancing at night, and then it's a got a couple places to chill and drink outside in both the front and back. They do a special all the time that is $6 for your choice of a beer and a shot, choosing between three beers and three types of liquor. Enough said. read more

Just an awesome, neighborhood bar in RiNo. This place is a great, laid-back place to grab a beer with friends. The crowd is friendly. The bartenders are pleasant and never too busy to add a bit more ginger to a very strong Jack & Ginger. They don't have a spectacular draft list (mostly Breck & Great Divide for the local beers) but they have an IPA and that is about all I require. The drinks are cheap, the bathrooms are clean and there is a great patio area. And, since this is RiNo, there is actual, free, street parking. read more

They hopefully have the liquor you want in an atmosphere that makes you smile. Matchbox, however, seemed dead last night (I thought Thursdays were the new Fridays); and didn't have the late night liquor I liked (Wild Turkey 101, or in a pinch, 86). My absolute favorite "dive" bar. The best HH in town! Staff is friendly, several good craft beers on tap. The only draw back of this place is a lot of people smoke on the outside patios - the fumes can be a challenge to avoid, especially on the front patio when the garage doors are up. Had some visitors in town so we just took them around denver. Somehow ended here as we heard they had cheap drinks. They have a great special that is basically on all the time.. which is a shot and a beer for $6. Now you're obviously not gonna get some high end liquor for this deal, but it's still a great price if you're not picky. The place is a pretty decent size, heard that they get pretty busy on the weekends. They also have a jukebox like touch screen and for $1 you can make a song selection. This bar is pretty divey. I think it is leaning more towards authentically divey versus faux-divey. Although the neighborhood is not as bad as it used to be, it is still not that great. The surfaces (bar, tables, side bar), were all rather sticky and in need of a good wipe-down. The roll-up garage door in the front (almost obligatory for trendy locations these days) let in a nice breeze. It also was the perfect conduit for sucking in all the smoke generated by sidewalk smokers. My mixed drink was pretty average in taste, and slightly better in presentation. I will give the bar some points for being very dog-friendly (that keeps them from getting 2 stars). read more

Normally really enjoy this place however the staff decided to award themselves an extra 10 tip On top of my 20% tip. I have called and left multiple messages about it with no response. Things happen however since no one will call me back I'm assuming this was not an accident. Really frustrating and disappointing. So to get the only "bad" about this place out of the way, the on draft hard cider is kinda not the best. I would go with the Red's if you're there for that, I know most people aren't so that's why it has zerrroooo affect on this review! Moving on... The walk alone to Matchbox is a sight to see in its own. Lots of cool shops and people walking around, but most importantly some of the coolest murals around. Or street art? I'm not sure how to classify it because I think they rotate even. Either way, fun bright colors done by AMAZING artists, be sure to stop and take some pics. ;) The bar itself is very roomy and not complicated, the weather wasn't great so we didn't hang out on the back patio but def check it out! There are games and more places to hang. I'm not sure what it is about this bar that seems to attract a wide variety of people - but none of them were bros! I'm a HUGE fan of Matchbox! Since moving to Denver in September, I've been here about 5+ times. The price point is great and their happy hour prices are even better. It can get pretty crowded on the weekends, but you can usually find a little area for your group of friends and it's not too bad. They also have a jukebox / music machine where you can queue up your songs, which is always fun. It's been pretty cold out all of the times I've gone, so I've mainly stayed inside, but I'm really excited to head here over the summer and to utilize the outdoor space. Overall, it's an awesome dive bar and I highly recommend it for a fun night out! read more

Ok if you come here in a weekend night it's going to be packed as ever. Typical bar on the weekends. They have a decent outdoor patio area. Bathrooms are pretty small. The location the this bar is great with other spots to hop to after your spent some time here. But what the absolute best thing about this place and why I give it 4 stars and not 3?! Is because of it's Taco Food truck outside!! Yum yum!! El Rey Del Taco is so good and cheap! I had their chorizo, pastor and beef tacos. I also had a simple cheese quesadilla. My favorite? Was for sure the al Pastor Tacos! Honestly probably some of the best tacos around here in Denver. I travel a lot for business and overall I think Denver lacks a little bit in the food scene but when it comes to street tacos, this place is where it's at. This place is comparable to spots in LA, Dallas and NYC. The workers are also super nice as well! Definitely make a stop at this place on your way out after the bar! read more

This place was recommended to me and I'm happy I had a chance to check it out. There is a patio out front but also a much bigger one in the back. in the back you could play bocce ball but I found it disappointing that it's on artificial turf and not on crushed oyster shells. The interior sort of has a divey feel to it but it works. The bartenders were nice and the beer was pretty reasonable. I just found the beers on tap were really limited so maybe next time I should go with mix drinks?! Can't blame them since about every other place in Denver has a gazillion beers on tap so why not be a little different? Dropped into The Matchbox to have a drink with an old friend. Twas happy hour so our two rounds cost us 12 bucks. Gotta love that. We sat at the bar - it was nice and cool with the big front windows open and just a great place to chill out. Our bartender was really sweet and made me a michelada even though he'd never had one and it was fantastic. I like mine with lots of lime juice, tomato juice and tobasco and he nailed it. Cool atmosphere, very laid back with doggies roaming around. Oh and they have Patron on tap....that's right. Icy cold Patron Silver at the pull of a handle. Yum. Also, bocce ball...holler. Generally thought the bar was fun and had a great vibe, until I encountered a terrible experience, and the bartender that I had previously liked told me to fuck off. To keep this as short as possible, I put $30 in the jukebox, and it never even registered any money deposited. So I put more in, totaling $40 and nothing registered. In the process of buying drinks I mentioned my frustration to the bartender and he said I must be mistaken because the machine never has any problems and I should just be patient. I showed him the screen wasn't even responding to any touch whatsoever and it was frozen. He said "wrong, I can see it ass hole". The 6 people I came with looked to be in complete shock because what he was saying was unequivocally objectively false. Ultimately his response was, you got what you paid for. $40 for zero music on a frozen juke box screen. Total ass hole. Wouldn't go back and would discourage anyone from doing so. read more
