I was shocked to see a mouse blatantly cross my kitchen in the morning between cabinets. I also heard their screechy sound behind the cabinet. I called up three local rodent busting companies, two of them came for inspection the next day. Although Gottem was not lowest priced, I selected Gottem and Ricky in the end after his initial inspection as I was convinced by his experience, know-how, action plan and post-completion warranty. Ricky and his technician Jat arrived punctually the next day. Jat climbed into my tight crawl space to fix broken metal mesh connected to outside vent. He also used the foam to fill the gaps around the pipes that connect to upstairs. Ricky was quick to ascertain how mice got to the 2nd floor kitchen. He noticed gaps around the water pipe that comes into the kitchen under the main sink. After knowing how mice came to the kitchen from outside, he set a mouse trap and placed a few sticky pads along rodents' path. Ricky also placed a few mouse traps around the kitchen. He taught us how to use different positioning to "confuse" mice so that they will be more likely to be tricked to the traps. Ricky's strategy and planning WORKED perfectly with immediate result. (1) The mouse trap under the sink cut a mouse by half overnight! (2) Another mouse was caught dead by the trap under the stove. After a week, Ricky came by/assessed the result and reset/reallocated the traps in the kitchen. The kitchen has returned peace as usual. Another week has gone by without an incident. Ricky blocked the entrance gap under the kitchen sink to mark the end of this project. Expensive, irresponsible, and incomplete work. I saw on yelp that this company had good reviews and thought I'd get them to help with pigeon nettings around solar panels. Ricky came out and installed incomplete meshing that secured the pigeon from predators that encouraged even more nesting pigeons. I sent a complaint to them to give them a chance to fix it and the response was basically "give us more money to install more stuff to fix this". They don't stand behind their guarantee. They show no professionalism, and now I don't have the budget to hire someone else. So if you're looking to spend money to make matters worse, go ahead and hire gottem. I heard some pounding/pecking along the eaves of my attic and eventually captured some video of a Wood Pecker or Flicker pecking away at the mesh vents to my 2nd floor attic. Eventually the persistent bird broke through the mesh so I knew it was time to call a professional. I hired Gottem Rodent Proofing to come handle a rodent problem in our attic. I went into an agreement with Rick to fix all the metal mesh in our roof vents and set traps. That same evening, we had a severe leak in our laundry room and garage. Rick immediately came back to fix the leak. One month later, the leak in our garage returned. This time I called a roofing company to correct the issue. I notified Rick of our problem and he assured me that he would cover the roof repair costs (in full). A month later, I still didn't have payment and Rick asked if he could pay me back in 2 monthly installments. I agreed to his new terms. It has been over 10 months and I have not received any repair funds from Rick. To top it all off, a 2nd leak was found due to Rick's poor service. Yes, he got rid of our rodents, but he severely damaged our tile during the process (and it cost me $2K to repair his errors). Be aware! It appears that they have taken more business than they can handle. My experience is none like all previous reviews. The first appointment was hard to make and their reason was too many calls for them to keep up with. The inspection was superficial at the best. They showed up a few hours late and it was already dark. And just said that there are a few places needing fix. Gave me a estimate of more than a thousand. Since they include one year warranty and have good yelp reviews, I rewarded them the job. They came and put screen patches and traps around the house, received their payment, and confirmed a Friday appointment for recheck. So far so good. Two days past and no signs of caught mice. But bananas were eaten. We tries to put our own trap cage in the garage where they didn't put any trap. Our own trap caught one on Thursday. Perfect timing for Friday recheck. Unfortunately, it was a no-show on Friday. When called Rick, he said he sent a technician on Thursday, which is not true. When asked if he could come to collect the mouse on Friday and we had to text and call him and left messages back and forth several times, he said he is out of town, in a meeting, etc. And never gave a new appointment through the rest of the day. On Saturday, again we tried to reach him to collect the mouse. He is again out of town, but promised someone would come in two hours (it was about 1:15 then). Still no one showed up. When I tried to call him, it was voice mail and I realized they close at 4:00 on Saturdays. Since we don't like the idea of mouse dying slowly in our garage, we had to deal with it yourself. My experience is completely the opposite from the other reviews. I do believe that they must have done great jobs to earn all the good reviews. However, there are definitely signs of overgrowth and not able to maintain the same quality of service. ======== Update 2018/9/4 ======== After all most 1 year has passed since my last business conduct, I suspected there is some rodent activity on my attic. The quick summary: Rick does good work and cares about his customers. He's a hard worker, and from recent conversations with him, is focusing on hiring great people and running a great business. His heart and mind are in the right place. Just about everybody in the Bay Area has problems with critters, it seems. I had another rodent proofer come and do some work, and he even caught a rat, but more moved in and the guy disappeared. I found Rick, and he came to do an inspection right away. Rick and Juan found a LOT of holes that the previous person had missed (and I mean a lot), including several that were barely visible. They sealed those all up. The place is seven decades old, though, and let's face it, there are lot of places where beasties might get in. The thing I love about Rick is that he hasn't bailed on me. Rick and company came back several times to seal up newly-identified possible entry and exit points. I'm not saying you'll need the warranty, because Rick does good work, but when I needed the warranty, he stood by it. We had a rodent that had fallen in the air vent, and Rick was able to identify immediately how it happened and took measures to make sure that all potential openings were sealed away, and he worked on several different spots in the crawl space that were showing signs of heavy rodent activity. He also cleaned up the entire crawl space so that it was spotless! I had a terrible smell coming from one of my vents so I called up 3 different rodent control companies for estimates. One company said he would set bait around my home however he was unable to enter my crawl space to remove the dead rodent or go down there to rodent proof it. He told me he has been in the industry for 30 plus years and can do a walk around the outside of the house and show me where to rodent proof areas but I would have to call a handyman - this was too inconvenient and the fact that he wouldn't enter my crawl space gave me little confidence he was right for the job. Another company came out and confirmed from smell there was a dead rodent but could not guarantee they would be able to locate it and if they were to proceed, I would need to leave the house for half the day as the chemicals could be harmful to my 8 month old baby - Definite No. Rick was quick to reply and came down the next day. He inspected the crawl space and attic, taking a lot of pictures and explaining in great detail where rodents could be coming in from and what needs to be done. After he finished the inspection, he found and removed the dead rodent then sanitized the area for me at no charge. He noticed I had a baby girl and said he had to remove it now for her. We hired Gottem (Rick) against all other pest exterminators because he seems to be very experience. He can immediately identify that we have a bat issue. He gave us a quote to include rodent proofing of our garage so that he is able to provide us a 1 year warranty of his work. We agreed to it. Even before we started the project, he did say that it could be a battle between us the the bat, and he might need to come back again. He came and roof proofing as much as he could on preventing the bats from entering our roof tiles. Unfortunately, as the weather becomes warmer, the bats are back! We called Rick, he responded immediately. He is very articulate on accessing the issue and came up with a game plan. He inserted foam between the tiles edge and also suggest some mothball. It seems to work on the parts he covered but not the parts he can't reach with his ladder. Unfortunately he doesn't has any longer ladders in his truck and hence our battle with the bats continue.. he will be back to complete the work and I believe he will.... we will upgrade to our review to 5 stars once the bats are gone as promises As this moment I highly recommend Gottem (Rick and his team), and I'm willing to be his referral anytime. Rick "guarantees" his work, but he does NOT stand by that guarantee. He said he would return and finish the job when the rodents returned within the one year he guaranteed, but he did not finish the job. We set a couple of different appointments that he did not show for, and now he simply ignores my messages and texts and is completely unresponsive. Here is what happened. One year ago in June 2017, I hired Rick to seal entry points into my attic and clean out the rodent infestation. He and his crew came over and did the job. They were very friendly and professional. My attic space is very tight, but they maneuvered around in it, sealed a bunch of entry points, and cleaned up most of the rodent droppings. Then they sprayed disinfectant/deodorant spray. After they were done, I inspected their work. It was well done from what I could tell. I had to replace some HVAC duct straps that they removed while maneuvering around my attic and I had to clean up some rodent droppings that they missed. Overall, I was happy with the work. But I should have requested that they set traps to see if they actually sealed all of the entry points. Rick asked for a Yelp review but I waited to see if they actually did a thorough job and sealed out the rodents or if the rodents would return. I set my own rat traps and put a repellant buzzer in my attic to see what would happen. I checked the attic space about a month after the job and saw droppings, but I figured that the droppings must have been missed previously as they were under the HVAC unit. I continued to check the traps occasionally, but I should have been more thorough. Then this past April, I found more droppings and some chewed up insulation. It turns out that they didn't actually find all of the entry points because the attic space was too tight from the inside. I called Rick hoping that he would honor his guarantee even though it had been 10 months. He said he would and he came out to check the attic space. He said it was too tight from inside the attic so he would have to seal the entries from the roof. He told me that he had just bought a new ladder to get up to a second story roof. Then he asked me for a Yelp review simply because he came back out. Since he didn't actually do anything to fix the problem while he was here, I waited on the review to see if he would actually finish the job. Unfortunately, he never came back. We set an appointment and then he said he was busy with another job. We set another appointment, but he never showed up. Now he just completely ignores my texts and calls. We hired Rick to clean up the crawl space for rat infestation, seal any possible entry points, and set up traps on 12/11/2019. Everything went well on the first visit. Rick charged us $4500 for the job, and he demanded to get pay on the spot! Things started to get freaky in January 2020. Rick had no show 4 times in the roll (1/24, 1/31, , 2/5, and 2/14). And, we have to chase him on every appointment to see if he is still coming. Very unprofessional and wasting lots of our time! He also gave us lots of excuses why he can't come! Starting from 2/14/2020, he stopped responding to my calls and text messages. Rick failed to come back to reset the traps, patch up the holes, and set up the bait stations around the premises as he promised! Per this contract, it includes 1 Year of monitoring warranty and 5 years materials warranty. But we are only on our 2nd months of the monitoring, Rick is already no show. No show 4 times in the roll is Totally NOT acceptable! Most importantly he did NOT do his job! Because there are still rats/rodents coming in! Review for dead animal removal from basement crawl space April 2019. Came back from overnight trip, and got the stink of dead animal, strongest near downstairs closet. Setting up appointment was painless; wanted Rick from Gottem to come in Sunday (which is when I contacted him), he said he would try to drop in after his job on hand, but could not manage to do so by late evening. But set up time for Monday morning. Rick came in with his coworker on time. Nice and professional people. Given the smell, he guessed it was a bigger animal (possibly possum). He did a thorough tour around the house looking for entry points and checked out the attics for droppings. He was candid and mentioned most things looked ok, except for one entry point with broken mesh that needed to be fixed. He gave us a quote, we agreed, and he started the work. He got the carcass out quickly, disinfected the area, and replaced the covering to the entry point. I had left home by this time, my wife looked over the entry points, and discovered two other entry points with work out meshes that could also could use fixes. We worked out a deal with Rick to replace the two coverings. Rick did promise to set traps to see if there were further issues, but he was going out of town, so we delayed that. We were supposed to call him later to set up appointment to do that, but we did not follow thru. Overall prompt action, got the job done, but pricey. read more

However when I wanted to hire them after discussing specifics, I couldnt connect to him so far. Every time I message him, he gives me a time that he would call me at and I never get that call. I did wait three times so far for his call and I didnt hear back from him. Not even an ack that he couldnt call me. In the service industry, customer service and sticking to time are very important factors by which we can judge providers. I'm a big fan of Rick's. He's really good at his job and he's a good guy. I hired Gottem to do rodent exclusion at my house, which is on a hillside and basically situated in a wildlife canyon (the combination of the hillside construction and being situated in a natural habitat for rodents made for an admittedly very complex job). I had previously hired 2 other "professionals" to do this work, but they failed miserably, so I specifically researched companies that do rodent proofing as their primary service. I got quotes from Rick and two other companies (all three quotes ended up in the same ballpark), and hired Rick as he seemed the most competent and he warranted his work for 1 year. Rick was thorough and I was happy with the job that he and his helper did. Unfortunately, rodents were still getting into my house's crawlspace as I caught a couple in the days after Gottem did their work. Per his warranty, Rick came back out in the following week or two to double check his work and see if he missed anything. I still caught rodents under the house after the second visit. Long story a little shorter, it took Rick two more times of coming back out to the house but I feel good that my house is now rodent proofed (I set up cameras around my crawlspaces so I could monitor for any rodents running around and haven't seen anything for a while. So why only 4 stars? Rick first came out to the house back in June'18, and his last visit was in September'18, so ~4 months start to finish. As other reviews have mentioned, it's tough to get Rick back out to do the warranty work. I was pretty persistent with Rick and continued to text him after not getting responses many times and I got annoyed with him just like some of the other posters, but he eventually came back out for a total of 4 visits and I am happy with the work, finally. Conclusion: I really don't think anyone else could have done the job at my house as it was a very difficult. Rick was persistent and eventually found every single possible rodent point of entry (size of a nickel?) and closed them up over 4 visits. I wish it wasn't so difficult to get him to return for warranty work, but I also understand he's a 1-man show and it's tough to prioritize warranty work over new work that he's getting paid new money for. It has been a year since Rick and team came to our house to get rid of some mice and rodent proof the house. For the last year our house had not had any new rodents come in. That is reason for the five star rating. Pros: He was the first to send his team and come and visit the house / provide an estimate. He was the first to have available dates to come in for a fix. He fixed the issue and we have been rodent free for an year now. Cons: He is penny wise pound foolish. Need to push him to get him to do what he agreed to do. Could not finish in the timeline he has provided. Reasons for the cons - as per the contract with Rick he is supposed to provide all the materials for the job. When I requested him to fix the gap between the front door and floor, he asked to buy the material and said he would help install. I later found that it was only 15-20$ for the material. As per the contract he was supposed to rodent proof the garage as well. But when he was done with the house, he said he does not have the time for garage and requested me to identify another service provide for garage. He promised to complete the work in a day or two, but it took him 3 days to complete the work and day 3 I had to literally follow up on every time he said he would complete on day one (at the time of contract signing). Will I hire him again ? Yes, I will make a note of all he promises and make sure he follows up on his promise. His work is good but we have to follow up to get things done. read more
