Admittedly, I have a problem with restaurants offering multiple cuisines. You certainly have your choice at Gourmet Garden - Chinese, Japanese, Thai, sushi, Beni Hana style theatrical hibachi - but it makes me suspicious of any authenticity. The restaurant was packed on a Saturday night but our food (spinach tofu soup, egg foo young and family style tofu) was just okay but tasteless. The waitstaff seemed harried and to be perfectly honest, the place is a bit of a mess. While we waited for our table to be ready, we were asked to sit on a bench in an area crammed with boxes and dirty dishes. We have been here many times with our family, generally for their hibachi. Also, have ordered their take out many times. The food is generally good, but the service leaves a lot to be desired. Tonight we called ahead to check for availability. They said they were open for seating. We arrived with very hungry little kids after tennis. They sat us immediately when we arrived 35 minutes later. At a completely open table. They took our drink order then took another 35 minutes before even taking out food order. We found out that they only had one habachi cook. So now we have been here for nearly an hour and are just getting salads. Other times we were here they're service hasn't been so great, but this is ridiculous. If you know it's going to be an hour before you can start serving your customers, you'd think you would let them know in advance. It is sad because we actually liked coming here but I'm just not going to take that risk again unless we are ready to wait an unusually long time. Chef was still great, entertaining and very nice. I've never heard of this restaurant and I was looking for something healthy like sushi. When I arrived for lunch the Decor is nice, generally clean, and prompt seating considering literally 2 other people were in there. I love sushi so I look for the best no matter what price. I checked out the sushi menu and quickly looked up reviews for this place. I didn't see very good reviews for the food in general so I definitely was not going to pay $15 for gross sushi. Instead I ordered "sweet and sour chicken", brown rice and egg roll. The egg roll was pretty good- not the best I've had but okay enough to eat and mildly enjoy. Rice is rice lol- plain brown rice is just that so no problems. Now... the chicken... terrible doesn't even describe it. No flavor! I'm Haitian and Cape Verdean so I LOVE my seasonings, okay? This thing didn't even have salt and pepper that even the most delicate palates could taste. Nothing- the batter was not seasoned neither was the chicken. Not to mention, the portion was HUGE and the chicken was not popcorn chicken it was the chicken fingers you get from a poo poo platter just lathered in red sauce. I saw what it was and tried one piece (of a thousand) to see. If it tasted decent I wouldn't have kept eating it: it tasted awful. Since I only ate one piece I asked for a refund for that particular dish. My waitress, God bless her, she was so nice to talk to the manager for me. Her service was splendid as well. The manager (here's the biggest problem) or whoever he was: this guy literally walked up to me and told me that I "ordered wrong" and that "this time only he'll refund me". I told him the food was bland and he won't have to worry about "next time". Because my waitress, Jocinda, was a doll I gave her a $20 tip even though my meal was for $8 after the refund. I'm pretty sure this manager or whoever just figured I couldn't pay for my meal. Apparently he didn't see my car keys nor my sunglasses nor my purse nor my watch. But hey, your loss. 4/20/2019 I thought I Yelped this restaurant before. I've been here a few times, but I didn't see to update, so ill start a new. I've been to GG because I enjoy the location, atmosphere and food most of all. Whether you'd prefer a sit down meal or Hibachi eating, this restaurant does'nt disappoint. I had family up from DC. When you have a larger then life family outing to a restaurant..... always do Asian cuisine. (Is that racist?) The food can be shared and it's always reasonably priced. So I suggested GG and all agreed. We ordered everything and so much of it. The food just kept coming. Did we eat it all? YEP. Greedy. But we didn't care. lol A side note. I am the only one in my family that eats Egg Foo Young. I LOVE it. Because no one else in my household does, i never order it. Well i did that night. I again was the only one that ate it. I got to bring the rest home too. A good lunch the next day. For all of you that do eat Egg Foo Young, this was my best ever had. The gravy was bit sweet and I thoroughly enjoyed. Service was terrible. My family and I went there for hibachi, there was nobody there, staff were on their phones the whole time. We waited 15 minutes for the check alone. Our hibachi chef came for 5 minutes at the most, he barely said anything. We pretty much just got food like getting takeout. Great place with a classier feel in Canton to have Hibachi! I can't say I've tried their regular dining and sushi so the review is just based on the times I've gone for Hibachi. I've gone for my SO's birthday and for regular occasions. The service has always been excellent. I've been to several different Hibachi places so they all have the standard set up for the Hibachi Chef to come in to prepare the food and entertain. At Gourmet Garden, I've tried the filet minion, scallops and shrimps. All have been delicious! I I'm not sure how the chef remembers how everyone wants their steak cooked, but I usually have mine medium rare and it was cooked to perfection. n comparison to Osaka or Tokyo Steakhouse chains, I don't think there's a huge difference between the taste of the restaurants. The chicken and broccoli had NO sauce on it just steamed veggies and chicken sitting in the liquid used from cooking the chicken. I tasted it and it was boiled or steamed bland and disgusting. Then I got chicken Lomein and the taste was awful. Chicken was odd tasting and noodles and sauce was odd tasting. Only thing that was good was the egg rolls. Decided to give Gourmet Garden a try as I have often driven by to frequent the nearby Orange Leaf with my younger sibling and had noticed its construction a few months back. Overall, it was a great meal - having been open for less than a month and already operating at capacity speaks for itself. Gourmet Garden addresses many of the issues that plague Chinese restaurants in North America. PROS: -service was great, which is rare for Chinese restaurants. Our server was fluent in both English and Mandarin. His english was strong enough to crack jokes with many other patrons -many health-conscious options including low-carb items as well as dishes cooked sans oil and organic ingredients. First time seeing low-carb being offered at an asian restaurant. Clearly targeting young professionals + westernized patrons -well-decorated interior; a proper sit down restaurant that I would not hesitate bringing friends to -free WIFI CONS: -portion sizes were slightly below average but I may have a geographic bias, being used to the typically large plates at chinese restaurants in the Greater Toronto Area -Menu was a bit overwhelming as they specialized in Chinese, Thai, Sushi, as well as Hibachi. Gourmet Garden has both regular dining and hibachi. Their regular dining menu is known for using organic, healthier ingredients and fresh vegetables. They mostly have Thai and Chinese food, with some sushi and sashimi. My family always orders the sashimi deluxe as an appetizer, and the presentation of the dish is always changing but always very beautiful. The only suggestion I have for that dish is to offer it with 4 pieces of every fish, which may make sharing for families easier. Other dishes we like are Thai curry with chicken and rice noodles and the Pad Thai. The service is usually good and the restaurant is very modern and clean. The hibachi is also nice and it's on the other side of the restaurant. The show was very professional and the food was delicious. In addition, Gourmet Garden usually has an offer on Groupon that has a great discount. Overall, always a good experience. read more

Lemme start my saying I've had only their sushi and Chinese food; so that is the only cuisine I can speak of. Their Chinese food is mediocre. Was not really served hot, and my family is of the belief that hot food should be served hot. And the portions are very "gourmet". Definitely worth trying again as the quality was good. Speaking of quality, their sushi is amazing. A+ for creativity and presentation. HOWEVER, our waitress' English was extremely poor and she could not answer any of our questions about the menu, Inexcusable IMO. If the food wasn't so delectable I'd give a much lower rating. Pouring water in sodas as our refill. Finally got the check , and after encouraging refills, they charged 3.75 for the soda and 1.75 for each "refill" when they were literally posting water in our sodas . Then when we paid our bill the waitress came back and demanded more of a tip!!!! She argued with us for over ten minutes that our 20% tip wasn't enough!!!...it was 20% more than she deserved!!!!! Do Not eat here if you have Celiac Disease or are Non-Celiac Gluten Sensitive. Their menu's 2 designated gluten free items has the header "For the health conscious" which is usually a red flag for us at most restaurants, but we thought rice and fish would be safe. We started our night pretty well during drinks and appetizers. Once the meal came to us, it all went downhill. My friends and I started with fried raviolis and shrimp tempura. My husband didn't have any starters because they didn't have anything to accommodate his allergy to gluten. The appetizers were good and their mixed drinks were strong. Before ordering several sushi rolls, he told the waiter about the severity of his allergy. The waiter initially said the tamago did not have gluten, but from our experience of knowing that some places purchase their tamago from another company, we asked him to double checked. Of course, he came back and told us that there was wheat in it. After my husband finished ordering, he once again asked the waiter to double check everything that he ordered. The waiter said that he would. When my husband got his rolls, he once again asked the waiter if everything was entirely gluten free. The waiter said yes. Right after my husband ate one spicy tuna roll, he tasted the tempura right away. We immediately called the waiter over. He initially said that he checked everything when we told him what happened, but in a moment of realization, he said that he forgot about the tempura in the spicy tuna. We asked for the manager who apologized and gave us a gift card. We don't intend to ever go back even though the manager and waiter seem sincerely remorseful for such a big failure. I talked to the manager on my way out and he told me they're on high alert when people with food allergies come in. After asking him a few questions about their protocol for handling allergies, it was clear to me that this place is clueless. Their GF soy / tamari sauce came to our table in an unlabeled bottle. We always have our own, for situations like these. All of our precautions were not enough though. On top of it all, I ended up really really really sick all night from my sashimi. Fortunately, we have two bathrooms and that my husband caught it before he had too much. He didn't end up in the hospital this time, but he was still violently sick.
