This place has not changed inside since went to SUNY back in 1989. The same big submarine sandwiches. I don't even think the signs have changed. Plain cheese pizza is quite good. The sauce tastes fresh and homemade. The crust is good and not too much cheese on the slice. So if you want a nice cheese pizza definitely go here. I haven't ever gotten the toppings here. Really good pizza and subs. Daily specials are decent and it's the only place around to get pizza at 3am on a weekend. As a bonus to the tasty pizza, you can actually get to see some frat boy use a slice as as a "weapon" when some freshman runs his mouth at the counter after realizing the three White Claws they ingested at the local bars gave them a bit of courage and drunk muscles. When you get a pie on Tuesday, and take the first bite, the taste will bring up the memories of the terrible decisions and 4am regrettable hookup you had the weekend before and you'll swear you'll change your ways. Next Saturday at 3am, as you stumble down Main St. with your sloppy friends, you'll get that amazing familiar Gourmet aroma and feel at home again, because you KNOW the employees in there speak fluent Corona and Jameson, and will know exactly what you need. When the PD arrives, and they will due to the dopes and hood boogers yelling in the street, sit back and look out the window at the chaos while holding up your phone and yelling "WORLD STAR!" as you enjoy your tasty pepperoni slice. I would say more like mediocre pizza. If this is the best in New Paltz, then I guess New Paltz is full of bad pizzarias, and people are just drunk out of their mind to know they are not that good. This place looked fine when I went in to order a pizza, and the young woman behind the counter had her mask on the entire time I was in the restaurant. When I went back to pick up the pizza, though, the man behind the counter had his bandana mask repeatedly off and on his face, there was no hand sanitizer in sight, he did not wear gloves, and when I was on my way out he openly sneezed. I left worried about coronavirus exposure and mad at myself that I hadn't just left as soon as I saw how unsafely he was handling himself. On top of that, the pizza was undercooked and overcheesed, making it difficult to eat without the entire cheese pile sliding off the top. Went to gourmet tonight after have been there a thousand times. I ordered slices for my kids and a beer for myself. I got a Stella that need opener. Getting it still sealed I looked for something to help. I saw something tii ok open it over counter, picked it up and opened my beer. Upon doing so the pizza cook aggressively told me how dare I reach over his counter and to never do it again. I apologized, and with no response he put his head down and walked away with an attitude. A couple of Gourmet's staff put a pizza place in a college town to shame. Not only did they have a poor attitude and disposition but they couldn't get the concept of basic food service (couldn't tell me the ingredients of any of the salads on the menu, couldn't give prices, acted as though I was burdening them although I was the only patron on the establishment placing a large order...). These staff were useless to each other no less customers and moved at a snails pace. Gourmet Pizza is by far the worst pizza I have had in recent memory. We were drawn to the pizzeria because of its classic NY pizza joint aesthetic and extensive menu of unique toppings but that is where it's charms end. While the menu has many fun topping options, the slice options were very limited to the usual standard options plus "stuffed pizza". We ordered 5 slices all together and ended up paying around $26 which is absurd but it's New York after all and nothing is reasonably priced here so we bit the bullet and paid the outrageous price. The food itself was HORRIBLE. Truly horrendous. The pizza wasn't burned but it had a terribly bitter burnt taste to it as if the oven was dirty and desperately needed a cleaning. This was not your classic char taste either. We love that. This tasted like a dirty oven. The sauce was lack luster, the cheese tasted like generic pizza chain cheese product and the toppings were unimpressive. The stuffed pizza was so bad we had to douse it in garlic powder and parmigiana to make it go down with out a fight. The chicken bacon ranch was completely bereft of ranch and the bacon was only in the middle of the slice. The crust was off balance being too cakey. It was way too thick, didn't tear easy with each bite and had no firmness on the bottom. As Dave Portnoy would say, it had too much flop. I am an Italian American and a life long lover of NY style pizza. But if I were offered this pizza or Domino's, I'm taking Domino's every time. Why is everything seemingly closed at 7PM around here? Well come 11PM everywhere you drive looks like a ghost town. City girl in me just had to push the limit and we drove up to this pizza shop. Very dimly lit inside, but decent amount of pizzas still on display. I order a baked ziti...and my party of kiddos ordered the cheese and sausage slices. We ask if they can make a pizza slice topped with bacon. Dude at the counter thought about it for 2 seconds and gladly made it off the menu. BTW, my baked ziti came with a side of salad and they brought it to our table. For a casual pizza joint, service is pretty on point. Staff was polite, not friendly and not really welcoming...but polite. Given the scarce reviews, and quiet area ... I wasn't sure what to expect. Our pitcher of soda spilled and we cleaned it ourselves...so that's where the one star came off because it would have been easier to clean the table with a rag and clean the floor with a mop but there was no one behind the counter after we were served. Pass on the baked ziti...it was covered in mozzarella and meatballs, tasted stale...like they were just taken out of the freezer ... no taste and sauce/mozzarella were overpowering. This is where it cost them another star. Anyway...here is a picture of the salad and bacon pizza slice...we ordered another to take back to our resort. Ordered pizza at 4:30 pm for delivery. Was told hour Delivery and hour later did not show called the Pizza Place and they said the driver was stuck in a snowbank. Not sure how that happened because it's clear as day I called back again to find out spoke to someone named Francis who is not the nicest person could not give me any indication of when the pizza would be here and could not tell me if we would even receive it. We have ordered many times from gourmet but this is probably our last and on top of it all never got a call from the manager to apologize. Need to make their service better.
