As you enter this home of worship, you must take off your footwear at the entrance. You walk in to the left and find a table in the dining room area. There is a buffet line of all delicious vegetarian dishes. Beautiful light music plays from the store next to the dining area. I always have a plate of fresh green salad to start with. I just recently tried the sesame dressing. It is pretty good! The day I went, they were serving the enchillada's. So delish! The freshly made tortilla chips are crunchy to every bite! I always dip it in the soup or eat it with the fresh made butter. There is usually a huge block of butter next to the salad and toppings. There is always steamed cauliflower and brocolli there too. Last but not least, the delicious ginger, mint leaf drink is so refreshing and clean you out! If you havent dined at Govinda's before, just remember not to drink more than two cups of the green minty ginger drink. Their bathroom is a single stall. Not good if you are flushing your insides out with this cleansing drink! But one cup and a cup of water is just the right amount. If you're a regular like me, and eat here all the time, you will get used to it and it doesnt flush you out as much as what it did to me before. Maybe I got all the bad out already? haha! Their food is an indian cuisine. It is the best that I have tried so far! I love eating at this peaceful temple. There is a big huge back yard that you can dine outdoors too! My daughter loves to run around outside barefoot! This is the only place I let her run outside with no footwear! After you eat, as you exit through the store, you pay for yourself. It is $10 so I usually leave a tip in their silver elephant bowl next to the register. I always try to buy a hand crafted bag from the store to support their religion. I know all the money is given to the ones who hand made the bag. For their journey and peaceful way of living. So amazing! I donated two blue purple glittery peacock ornaments you will see in the display case below the register in the store. Their belief is that the peacock is a sacred bird. The only birds that the holy one played with growing up. So to this religion, the peacock is their sacred beautiful bird. I look forward to dining here again in the near future! I love this place! I eat meat and this place was amazing. I had to preface this diatribe/review by saying that. I'm not even sorry if that offends anyone because we were meant to eat meat. It's science. However, when it comes to vegetarian places (this being my first) I was amazed. The buffet is delicious and I went back for several helpings. There was a delicious variety of Indian food. I have Indian friends back home in Jersey and it was a little different, but keep in mind Indian culture is vast and diverse. They have 1.3 billion people and growing. Consider how different we are in America and multiply it by 4. When I first came in and took off my shoes I was welcomed in traditional "Ohana" fashion. I felt peaceful entering into and walking around this place. It's sounds strange, right? But no joke, this place had a very peaceful atmosphere to it. Before eating, I suggest walking around the grounds of the establishment first. There is a beautiful Banyon tree in the back that looks like something out of Ferngully. I would give this place 10 starts if I could. The food, soooo good. The atmosphere and environment, even better! When I first found this place, I thought I was lost as it looks like someone's mansion. The workers are very friendly and the environment is very relaxed, almost resort or spa-like atmosphere. You need to take off your shoes before you come in. The food bar consists of a variety of raw vegetables to make salad, with a variety of dressing. There are whole wheat rolls with tasty butter on the side if desired and rice, different bean/lentil soups for the day along with a variety of tasty entrees that vary with the day of the week. The dessert, halavas are absolutely wonderful and moist. If you don't know what halavas are, they are a middle eastern dessert. Go wikipedia it, they are cool stuff. I feel as if I walked into an alternate dimension where everything is slowed down and stress is non-existent. There is indoor and outdoor seating. The outdoor seating is excellent, like a special large garden with a great view and relaxing aura to further relax yourself and lounge around while enjoying good food. Solemnly tucked away in an oasis of mature banyan/ficus grove. Aptly named Govinda's which also was the popular nickname of Lord Krishna when he was a young cow herder. YUMMERS in the tummers. Goldilocks found herself at UH Manoa and man was she hungry. Goldilocks had worked up quite the appetite after running away from the 3 bears she pissed off back in the valley. Being blonde, and not one to learn lessons the easy way, Goldilocks went off in search of something to eat. First Goldilocks went to Campus Center, but it was tooooooooooo noisy! (will the renovations ever end?) Then Goldilocks went to Paradise Palms, but it was tooooooooooo quiet! (I know it's summer, but if the only food available is the hot line of crappy Chinese or pre-made sandwiches... Goldilocks is not gonna be a happy camper!) Finally, Goldilocks came upon the Sustainability Courtyard and it was juuuuuuuust right! Nice atmosphere. Govindas kiosk. No bears. A $5 mini included the following: Vegetarian curry - A nice mixture of red peppers, cauliflower, potatoes and peas in a thick yellow curry. Totally ono and a hefty serving! Goldilocks could have chosen the vegetarian lasagna, but vegan sounded like a good way to counteract the 3 Bear's Portuguese sausage and 12-pack of Miller Light that accidentally worked it's way into Goldilocks' belly. Oops ;) Saffron rice with mustard seeds - Goldilocks loved how the mustard seeds popped in her teeth! Green salad - Goldilocks got to choose her own dressing and top it with sunflower seeds and raisins. That's right, free stuff here. 4 dressings to choose from: sunflower soy and the spicy green were pretty good! Dessert - This was a scoop of something that looked like puke, but given her hair color, Goldilocks ate it anyways!!! And it was GOOD! It seemed to be some kind of sweetened ancient grain like amaranth or something. Nice and light. The $5 mini ain't so mini. They were not manini with their mini. In fact it was Juuuuuuuuuuuust right! The moral of the story is eat at Govindas. Its the best bang for your buck on campus. Don't be like Goldilocks and waste your time trying out other options. Eat healthy under the trees and enjoy the day! NOTE: Govindas tends to sell out of the good stuffs early (like their veggie burgers). Dessert may not be vegan cuz Goldilocks tasted some buttah, might want to ask! Skip Da Spot cuz they cook with ROTTEN vegetables (I no lie!) Terrific getaway for lunch! $10 gets you an all you can eat DELICIOUS vegetarian lunch in a peaceful outdoor setting. Well, I guess you could sit indoors but it's hot and there's a beautiful, shady grassy lawn out back with tables too so why would you? Anyway, check your shoes at the front door and head in towards the back left. You'll see a cashier and a tiny shop I've never managed to really check out because I always bee line for the food. Once you've paid, grab a tray and some amazingly refreshing tea. Start with a fresh salad or head for the stirfry, or curry, or rice, or lentils, or potatoes (oh man those potatoes are seriously my crack snack. I could eat my weight in them) or quiche or whatever other delicious sampling they're serving up that day. Usually I'll just bring a blanket to spread out on the lawn to let my daughter play while we eat but there is ample seating as well. Seriously, it doesn't get better than Govinda's. read more

SUCH A PEACEFUL PLACE! Take off your shoes when you enter, pay at the gift shop ($10/person), try their ginger drink. I've eaten at the UH Manoa truck plenty of times, but never been here for their buffet lunch. You can eat inside or outside underneath the banyan tree. The food was soo filling, soo good! Started with a plate of salad (their dressing is really great--not sure what it was!) They had a curry option with yellow rice, cornbread with some spicy beans, veggies and potatoes, some other option (just as good, I just don't know what it was), and the dessert was a banana-like bread with choco chips on top and pecans inside! This is the one place on Oahu where I KNOW I can feel safe eating. I don't have to question if they have hidden fish or other non-vegetarian things in my food (like 99.9% of this island does). Devotees don't eat that stuff (I should know :) ) because they are real vegetarians; not the fake kind that eat fish and chicken...and everything except red meat. I truly appreciate Govinda's--even though it took me five years to build up the courage to go to the temple to eat (I have my reasons... :) ). It was well worth it. It is a beautiful place--as everyone has said before, eating outside is second to none. The banyan tree is amazing to sit under and it's very peaceful. The food is very good. They change the menu every day but there are not that many dishes to choose from at this buffet. That, however, is not a problem because what they do offer is delicious and satisfying. Not to mention you get to listen to some nice devotional tunes playing in the background during your relaxing lunch . Walking in to a friendly "hare krsna!" and recognition of the tulasi beads I was wearing was also very welcoming :) The free Jagannath sticker was nice too. Ahhhhhh delightful. Just delightful. Quirky, completely different, and yes - savory. Govindas is not a restaurant. It's an experience. And the closest thing I've come since traveling in India, to a true Indian experience here in the states. It's not homogenized for the masses. It's serene, sincere, beautiful and a little random. But having been to India - this is as close as it gets to the real thing! Even the smells, and the slightly unkempt nature of the surroundings - it all felt like a day in the Indian countryside. I was VERY pleasantly surprised by all the flavors! The buffet didn't LOOK that fabulous at first glance - again, this ain't Waikiki my friends - it's a residential HOME, converted to a low-key temple - so it's DIFFERENT. But the food was DELICIOUS. Many savory flavors - including a delicious quiche, and a vegetable curry that might be one of the best I've ever had . . and again . . did I mention I've BEEN to India? (K - just wanted to mention that.) Also, the ginger lemonade was DELICIOUS - I had like 4 glasses! To top it off, meeting the temple President, Madana, was a sheer pleasure. The people working there were a really interesting group of what seemed like young hipsters on a trendy spiritual path :), as well as local suburban moms with kids, hare krishna dudes in robes working in the yard, sweet-faced older hippie ladies, and happy-go-lucky sensitive ponytail dudes in faux leather sandals. I've been here twice before, but that was such a long time ago. However, I remembered about this place and have been dying to find it again so my bf and I did last week. Its a little tricky to find this place, but once you do its like you enter into a whole different world when you get there. Its so calm and serene with the buffet located in a Hindu Temple. For $10, its all-you-can-eat vegetarian buffet. Great, healthy food and it was so good for the price. We ended up going on a Friday and that day they had enchiladas, a tofu & eggplant & potato curry, yellow split pea soup, salad, pina colada halava, and ginger-mint lemonade. The enchilads were very interesting, made with corn tortillas which was nice. The curry was delish! with the brown rice and their pina colada halava was just awesome! Oh and their lemonade was SOOOOOOOOOO good!! I'm definitely going back to try more. Its so nice there and its a place you definitely want to try! read more

UH Manoa's kiosk outpost of the Govinda's empire is an occasionally welcome and relatively healthy respite from the usual campus fare. For $5 you can get a mini plate featuring an entree, salad, rice, and dessert. $7 will get you an extra entree (or a double portion) and soup as well. Two or three entrees are offered daily. I actually only really like their pasta-based dishes: orzo, penne/ziti, and lasagna (additional self serve chili seasoning recommended). I find the rest of their entrees kind of insipid and forgo them. (and I'm sorry, but "nut loaf" just brings out my inner Beavis) Sides include a basic green salad that you can garnish with sunflower seeds and a couple of choices of dressing, a light and flavorful rice (not plain white or brown), a hallava dessert, and soup (usually a hearty lentil). They're pretty amenable to substituting one side for another, e.g. soup for the rice (cue Big Night) Many folks seem to like their ginger tea beverage, but I find it too strong. It's all right blended with the berry tea though. Apparently affiliated with Hare Krishna, but no overt proselytizing. read more

This place is a great vegetarian place. Even if your not a vegetarian you'll like this place because it's just tasty! My favorite thing here are the smoothies. They are healthier than jamba juice and they have more choices than jamba juice. They offer three sizes but because of the pricing it's worth it to get the biggest size. The only bad thing about this place are the people who work here. Both times I've been here this year the slow has been super slow or rude. It took the booth 20 minutes just to make one smoothie and when it was done they didn't even tell me and looked at me like I was stupid when I asked where it was. The next time they forgot my order and they had to ask again what I was waiting for. Their lucky I like their smoothies so much or I wouldn't be back! Amazing Thanksgiving dinner. Lovely atmosphere, the hosts were very welcoming. I have tried the Thanksgiving dinner at all of the different vegan and vegetarian restaurants on the island over the past few years and this was by far the best. The Waldorf salad and the stuffing made from fresh, homemade cornbread was simply delicious. I'm craving it now, can't wait till next year! I like Govinda's. In the myriad of food trucks now available during lunch hour on campus, this seems to be my second go-to after Da Spot and sometimes the Aja plates in the cafeteria (those are neck and neck for #1). I've had a couple of awful experience here that makes me hesitant to give them the full five, so let me summarize everything in some simple bullet points. 1. The portions are great for the price. Unlike Da Spot, the mini plate isn't some over generous portioning, but it's probably better and healthier that way. Roughly $5. 2. Considering that it's vegan/vegetarian, the food is always really well seasoned and prepared. I think it's fair to say that there are a lot of restaurants that attempt to go meat-less and do so unsuccessfully because of lack of seasoning. I'm glad that isn't a problem here. 3. Because the dressings sit out, they sometimes go bad. I would not recommend using any of the creamy labeled ones (French, Sesame). Even though both are vegetarian/vegan, they still taste unusually sour on hotter, humid days. Stay away. 4. Baklava. F**king. God! Amazing. 5. I had an enchilada here once and it tasted bad. Like, rotten. Like, not edible. I'm still a little upset about this and have avoided that particular entree since. There's a few bummers about this place, though. The tables are almost always taken by students studying. While it's easy to just share tables with them, it's still annoyingly hard to find a place to sit in this courtyard. They're not open late, but none of the carts are. Oh, and several of the guys that work here talk to me in a cutesy voice like I'm some kind of child, which I know is supposed to be because they think I'm cute, but it's honestly really annoying and belittling. read more

Watery. Desert, seem like I was eating butter with sugar . Always a favorite of mine cool peaceful temple hidden in Nuuanu. Everyday a different menu M-Sat same menu weekly. If u like vegetarian. This is supposed to visit is fairly cheap and all you can eat. And you get to relax in the cool breeze listening to the sound of the trees blowing in the wind and the birds chirping. The wifey and I stopped by here yesterday, since we went vegetarian for Lent. I've never eaten so many veggie burgers in my life, not that it's a bad thing, but it's nice to switch it up a bit. I saw it on Yelp, figured we'd give it a try. To my surprise, because I didn't really read into the reviews, was that it was at a Hari Krishna temple. I don't know much about the Hari Krishna, except the religion is a part of Hinduism and people dance around saying "Hari Krishna" repeatedly. It's a cool area though, tucked away in an older neighborhood, has a massive banyan tree in the outdoor eating area. We walked into the main entrance, which is like a giant house, everyone leaves their shoes at the door, just like any other house here. I actually kind of liked that for some reason. My wife jokingly asked me, "where the hell did you bring me?" I laughed and told her, just where I saw they had good vegetarian. Anyway, we walked in and were greeted in the room where you pay before you eat. Nice guy running the shop, explained to us, all food was vegetarian, no fish, no egg, no garlic, and no onions either. Went to the buffet and saw a large set up of around 10-15 different items. Absolutely no idea what anything was, haha. That makes it more exciting though. You have no preconceived notions about anything, if you don't know what it is. Best way to find out, is eat it. So, I went through a picked out a little bit of each thing. Everything was pretty good, I didn't really have anything I didn't like. The chips were some of the best I've had, don't know what was on them though. One of the things I did know what it was, was vegetarian lasagna. No lie, I would eat that over lasagna with meat in it. I also liked the "sweet balls" as I called them. Again, no idea what it was, but it was like a honey soaked doughnut ball. I think the food was mostly of Indian origin though. We chose to eat outside in the courtyard, with the massive banyan tree. It was nice outside, birds singing, nobody talking, perfect for a relaxing lunch with the wife. As we were leaving, some guy wearing a giant Rastafarian hat came out of the bushes and casually strolled by. An odd way to end an "adventurous" meal. Saw this on Emi's page while waiting for my rsvp confirmation to Pley with Yelp and it is as bomb as it gets! Went right away for lunch with my girlfriend. A little hard to find but well worth it. $10 all you can eat vegetarian buffet and Ginger Mint Iced Tea. We filled up our plates with vegetarian lasagna,tofu & veggie curry, yellow rice and a cup of lentil soup. The soup was more like a sauce but that didn't deter me from drinking the whole cup. I come here during the mad rush between classes in a sort of I-Just-Want-My-$1-Cookie mentality, and always wonder why the dude at the cashier is so. chill. It's like life moves at a different time here: "Ahhh cookie. Let me pick out which one for you....Hmmmm." When every other vendor is all about "Next! Next! Next!", this place is kind of relaxing. Unless of course, I'm really late for class and I have no time...except WHEN IS THERE NO TIME FOR A COOKIE? Anyway, this place serves the best cookies on campus, although that might be a bit unfair because this isn't your standard cookie. It's different. It's made with oatmeal, raisins and chocolate, and tastes vegan (not sure if it is completely vegan, but for sure it's vegetarian.) And it's healthy. Ono-licious! The food is made fresh daily by Indian ladies and every dish is a treat. I prefer the Indian vegetarian choices over the several Western style dishes offered. If I lived closer I would visit Govinda everyday for take-out. If you've been to India, you will know that the food is authentic. I keep frozen rotis (Indian bread) on hand from The India Market and it is perfect with my meals from Govinda. Overcoming inertia causes you to forget to bring your leftovers from dinner to school for lunch. What is a broke-ass person who values flavor and health-ish-ness to do? Enter Govinda's little food-shack with their rotating menu of tasty, veggie-rich, cheap ($4.50 for a "mini" plate, which comes with one entree, brown rice, salad, and a dessert square) eats. As a committed omnivore I fully appreciate Govinda's yummy contribution to my daily veggie intake. My favorites to date include the yellow curry and the tuscan saute...also am a little fanatical about the little dessert square. Everyone raves about the lasagna, and I hope to happen upon it one day (there's a rumor that the menu is available for the month, but I like to be surprised). Been coming here for years and still enjoy it every time. Price is super reasonable $13 for adults, $7 for kids. Nice garden views and places for kids to play (swings in the front). I enjoy the curries, rice, veggies, lentil crackers and dessert. Not a big fan of the nut loaf or quiche. My kids are meat eaters and do eat a little veggies. They did not like it and ate crackers, rice, dessert, and potatoes. Needless to say, I'm not bringing them back, but I will definitely return! read more
