Just a warning. Grace Garden's interior isn't the most glamorous, clean, or spacious. There's probably about 4 large tables and 2 smaller ones, if even. But what Grace Garden offers is good, semi-authentic Chinese food. The chef has a good many dishes that are his own creations and are innovative, yet very Chinese. The best Chinese food I had in MD, and my husband is a SUPER picky Chinese man from LA whose mom makes amazing Chinese food who said this was his favorite place, comparable to Chinese places in CA. This is what we got, and I would recommend getting all of these, shared between 3 people: Braised pork belly- soft, flavorful meat with gelatinous fat flavored well around the rim of the meat, it was REALLY good. Pocket tofu- small pouches of soft, fresh tofu simmered in this red, spicy sauce- if you like tofu you should definitely get this Crispy eggplant- I LOVED THIS DISH!!! I love eggplant but the dish didn't even taste like eggplant. Each slice is dipped in batter and deep fried and tossed in this gingery, sweet sauce. My brother was visiting from out of town. He's been to China and lamented about how he wished he could find the kind of food he had in China. We ordered the tea smoked duck, Cantonese quail, braised whole flounder Hong Kong style, e-fu noodles, eggplant etc. The tea smoked duck is fragrant, exquisite, with a complexity of spices that make for a special holiday feast. Same with the quail. My brother said it was just like the food he had in China. It was a Babbette's Feast, truly once in a lifetime, impeccable. Every dish was spectacular. This ha been my favorite place for Chinese years. Ask for the authentic Chinese menu. My favorites are the fish noodles (of course), Szechuan fish filets, and Taiwanese Style Fish. Ask for the vegetables of the day if you're looking for something green. The green vegetables are not on the menu because they use whatever looks in the market that day. My favorites are chive blossoms and Bok choy. If you have some time, order the tea smoked duck three days in advance. It's worth it. On the American menu, try the chicken wings. Chef marinates them before frying. The coating is crispy and the meat is flavorful. The wings do take a little longer to cook, so be patient. Be advised that they are closed on Sunday. The celery and green onions give a nice crunchy contrast. 2) Crispy egg plant - rounds of egg plant, battered, deep fried, with a heavy thick sweet sauce on top. Was awesome. But slightly on the sweet side for me and my friends. We all agreed that it was on the border of becoming a dessert. We wanted to see a little less sweetness, and more spice. There were hot peppers (the ones you don't directly eat), but the heat never penetrated any of the egg plants. Some people have said they couldn't tell it was egg plant. Idk ..maybe i'm just sensitive to the egg plant texture, but it was still egg planty to me ...just an fyi. But an awesome dish. 3) braised pork belly - Porkbelly, I believe simmered in a simple awesome sauce with cabbage and there were even some shreded pork in the mix of greens as well. This was great as well. Reminded me of a korean dish ..can't put my finger on it. Just awesome. Can't really go wrong with porkbelly. Not overly tender, not overly chewy. Good ratio of decent meat and fat. 4) basil chicken - slightly underwhelming but still good. I didn't get much of a basil flavor in it. A friend said they use baby basil leafs, and that you're supposed to eat it with the chicken. I had chunks of the basil leaf and was eating it with the chicken, but the basil leaf was slightly too bitter..and it didn't have that traditional basil flavor. Also, i LOVE garlic ...but this had too many slivers of raw garlic in the mix. It made the dish very Bitter with that raw garlic. Maybe it was a fluke, would love to see the garlic sauteed to take the edge off it's strong kick . OVerall, only the basil chicken and egg plant had that traditional sesame oil/chinese oil flavor that makes you feel horrible after eating it ...but surprisingly, they make the dishes well so that I really didn't feel nasty afterwards, it was an awesome feeling. Usually I feel like i'm going to die after eating chinese. We even got the chinese donut holes. Dough, bread, fried, sugar. So simple, but so good. Fairly light as well. The owner/family members are super chill. One of the servers who came out to take our dishes back was very kind, and we struck up a conversation about them moving to Charles village. We shared some laughs, very cool. One of their neighbors, a Caucasian ex navy guy also comes and helps out from time to time, just because he's a nice dude. He has a normal day job but just helps out their family. So awesome to see. He's super close with their family it seems. Just awesome to see that cross cultural love. He's a funny dude, knows all the regulars, all around great guy for helpin out like he does. Pretty much, I can't wait to go back and try everything on the menu. I carried out from Grace Garden earlier this week and wanted to update my review to give a little more info. This is a legit hole in the wall. It's BYOB, the furniture is dated, and it doesn't seem like the table cloths get changed every day, but the sole reason to come to Grace Garden is for the food. It's. So. Good. I come here with friends so we can order a lot of different dishes each time ... we have tried so many things and always love everything. I stand by my previous dan dan noodles and crispy eggplant recommendation, but I also highly recommend the chive blossom seasonal vegetable side dish if you can get it. I'm not kidding, every single bite I take I say to myself (and sometimes out loud) "HOW DO THEY MAKE THIS TASTE SO GOOD?!" I can't tell you how they season it but damn it's delicious. read more

Best, most authentic Chinese I have found in the suburbs of Maryland. As good as my trips to China.

I have heard a lot about this place, and tried a couple of time trying to find it, only to realize a lot of people also passed by this strip mall and miss the storefront in the middle. The location is next to Fort Meade and KFC with not much around besides restaurants that have closed up shop. The restaurant is small, and has a few large tables and only one single table for two. If you are here to order the regular American Chinese menu, just go to any Chinese take out near your home. The good part is the Chinese menu. It's moderately extensive, and features excellent Cantonese and Szechuan dishes. This is the only restaurant I know that plants its own veggies. And their fresh veggies are excellent. I went twice just to be fair. Their famed fish noodles were intersting and definitely worthy if you like new things. It's basically Japanese Oden made into noodle shape, and not fried. It went very well with the mushroom and cilantro. I had excellent pork belly and fish sauce eggplant there. This is one of the very few restaurants that has stuff fresh enough that my sensitive stomach-o-meter didn't make any wave. Their veggies were out of this world. They don't over-flavor their food so the natural taste of the fresh food isn't covered. The food isn't over salted either. The price is on the higher side, about 10 per Chinese dish, but you need to stop treating this place like a Chinese takeout. This is a restaurant in a class of its own. I am comfortable putting it above any Chinese places in Rockville and Wheaton, (and even above my former favorite Michael's noodles) for the quality and delicacy of food preparation. And I eat out at Chinese places minimum 3-5 times a week. The freshness and cleanliness of the food can be easily tasted. Unfortunately, there is no hype or decor to con customers into paying for more. So it's hard to convince people who don't know their food that it's worth it. There is just excellent clean food that won't make you thirsty all night from too much salt. On top of the excellent clean food, the owner and his wife are both very friendly. The place has a Christian flavor I know. Bu I'd rather eat at a place that follows some kind of rule, rather than does whatever for money. First Saturday of Year of the Rabbit : Tea-Smoked Duck! Sure it was a little fatty and bony, but it WAS tasty, but YMMV. We had leftovers that we took home and nibbled on, eventually taking them off the bone, making duck chicharrons from the skin and an omelet with browned mushrooms from the meat. Another dish that we had and which, like the duck, must be ordered in advance, was the Phoenix Purse, light egg-white sheets gathered around a chicken-vegetable stuffing, and cooked and served in a light broth. It was good, but we don't need to have it again. On the other hand, the fish noodles are so good that it's difficult to not have them if there's more than just the two of us, and they did not disappoint anyone. Sorry, Nancy C, but you and your dissing hubby seem to be alone in your negative assessment of them. We also had the seasonal vegetable. Disclaimer - I wish I could give 3.5 stars but there are no half stars in Yelp. I heard about this place from a co-worker and decided to take a trip. It is located in a strip mall across from Fort Meade and looks a bit on the sketchy side. Like other people said, parking is in the rear. Look for the big, bright yellow CLUCK U sign. Just ignore the decor cause you will get a pretty good chinese meal here. We had the 1) salt and pepper squid, 2) salt fish and chicken fried rice, 3) eggplant with pork and garlic and 4) fish with vegatables. I felt the eggplant and fish dish were a bit on the salty side and I did not think that their salt fish fried rice was quite as good as Maria's Bakery (Rockville) or Full Key(Wheaton), hence 3.5 and not 4 stars. But its the best chinese food around BWI / Fort Meade and arguably better than Hunan Manor in Columbia. Not cheap, but if you don't want to drive to Rockville or Wheaton, then this is a very very good alternate. The taste is authentic and the food is well prepared. Order from the authetic chinese menu! During my last visit to Maryland my sister suggested Grace Garden for a family meal. She mentioned that it had both a "Traditional" and "American" menu options. Having experimented with less Americanized Chinese food before, I was definitely up for the trip. Grace Garden is located in a strip mall. It is incredibly no-frills in terms of ambiance and decor. What you might notice in the drab interior, however, is the wall filled with Zagat ratings and glowing restaurant reviews. Clearly, what they are NOT paying in overhead is going straight into the quality of the food. This restaurant serves some of the best Chinese food I've had to date. I went with my family and we chose a variety of dishes all from the traditional menu. A tasty salt-and-pepper squid in a tempura-like batter came out first. Later this was followed by an eggplant dish composed of sliced discs of crispy-fried aubergines in a flavorful sauce. This dish was slightly sweeter than I was expecting, as it was ordered from the non-American menu. It was, nonetheless, absolutely delicious. And gone in very short order. My youngest sister wanted to order the American Kung-Pao Chicken (her personal favorite Chinese-American dish). The waitress, however, steered her to order a crispy, chicken dish from the traditional menu. And, boy, were we glad she did. it was one of the most popular dishes at our table, comprised of crispy chicken and very fresh vegetables. It was quickly nothing more than an empty plate. The staff at Grace Garden's seems very small and service was a little on the slow side for things like drink refills and such. Normally this place would get 3 stars, but due to the lack of Chinese food available in Baltimore, I am giving it an extra one. The food really isn't bad, just not super authentic. This place seems to focus on Sichuan cuisine but also some Cantonese and Americanized dishes. It's a hole in the wall with a few tables. There are pictures on the wall of various recommended dishes that look delicious. I intend to try most of them at some point. Crispy eggplant was a favorite - fried eggplant slices with a sweet and spicy sauce. The pocket tofu is awesome! The tofu has a really silky texture and the sauce is yummy (both the spicy and non-spicy). I've also ordered the fish noodles, which seems to be a popular dish. It was fine but seemed like a novelty dish and a bit overpriced for essentially noodle shaped fish balls. Beef chow fun tasted authentic but was super greasy. I recently ordered takeout and though they actually forgot to cook our dishes until we got to the restaurant, they were really nice about it and had the food ready quickly. The Twice cooked pork was unusually sweet and didn't have much pork but mostly contained a hodgepodge of bamboo, cabbage, dried tofu. Not what I usually expect from the dish, but it tasted good. The Sichuan boiled fish was yummy as well though it lacked the "ma la" flavor from Sichuan peppercorns. I think my husband appreciated that it wasn't very spicy, though. This dish also weirdly contained bamboo. I love bamboo, but it doesn't belong in either of these dishes. I wonder if it was because we ordered late and the restaurant was just running out of food. We order something for everyone in the family: Szechwan pork belly, honey sesame chicken, fried eggplant, vegetable lo mein, fried rice, steamed rice, and 2 eggrolls. The person on the phone was pleasant and accommodating. My husband loved the pork belly and we loved the chicken and eggplant. Maybe we'll try it with the sauce on the side next time. The lo mein, fried rice, and egg rolls were bland and not fresh thus the 3 stars. I need fresh, crispy eggrolls not dry, overcooked old eggrolls, sorry!!! 2-2.5 stars but I don't want to be mean and to be fair I didn't try everything from their menu. I only ate here because my friend who has mediocre taste in food wanted americanized Chinese take out. Given that decent Americanized Chinese food in Hanover, MD is limited I had to put my trust in Grace Garden and my friend. I found that the prices here were a little higher than other chinese restaurants on their level. Especially given the location and quality of food I would expect the food to be cheaper. Items ordered: -fried donuts - tiny bite sized pieces of pillsbury dough deep fried. My initial question when I opened the container was "why would you have this on your menu?" My dad used to own Americanized Chinese take out restaurants when I was young. His restaurants weren't great either but he served this "dish" and it was damn good! No need to rip those dough balls into tiny nibble sized pieces. What makes these things good is the pillow soft center. You don't get that when you cut into tiny sections. -fried eggplant - good but way over priced for deep fried vegetables tossed in general tso sauce. Of course it is good as others here have said. how could it not? -crab Rangoon - for 6 pieces folded in a way that lacks filling was a waste of what could be very good because The filling was very good with the nice touch of onions and spices. Just charge me an extra buck, add more filling and fold into a triangle please. -dan dan noodles - this is an example of why people generally don't order authentic Chinese dishes at take outs specializing in Americanized Chinese. The noodles were grossly over-cooked. This was disgusting even for my standards. My friend loved this dish, but of course she did. - three cup chicken - another authentic Chinese dish we ordered. After frequenting this place for many years, I am surprised they still cook some of meanest Chinese food in the DMV. Food is unique, authentic, and always fresh. In fact, if you want to some of their select dishes (e.g., smoke tea duck, empress chicken, etc.), you'll have to order several days in advance (no joke). If you not a good planner, don't fret. You can still come in spontaneously and get their fish noodles, triple treasure, pork belly, fried ribs, vegetables, etc. and you will still be more than satisfied. Unfortunately, they are closed on Sundays and their location is a bit suspect. If you can't find parking in the front there is plenty in the back, and other than the Ft. It sucks when a restaurant has such great service at a fairly reasonable price for their food to end up bland and taste straight out of the freezer. I ordered the General Tso chicken with fried rice and even asked the owner if it wasn't the typical breaded balls with random meat in the middle that you find at a lot of fast Asian restaurants and he assured me all their chicken was 100% fresh. To no avail it was just what I was afraid of. 90% of the time eating was spent figuring out if it was chicken that I was eating or not. If it wasn't for me being so hungry I would of through it all away. I decided to eat a majority of the fried rice threw away most of the chicken. Gave the place a second shot and boy were we pleased for dinner. We ordered the crispy chicken and fish noodles and where pleasantly surprised by how delicious it was. The only thing I don't like is the price, those two items cost $40 dollars which is extremely high priced. Service was good and the staff was quite friendly. Grace Garden is excellent. Don't be fooled by the location. We had take-out and, despite a 20-minute drive home, it was excellent. Our next visit will be dine-in. Took a shot at either dining in at Cluck-U or Grace Garden. Next time I will be going to Cluck-U but this time my body said let's have some rice. I walk in about 30 mins before they close. Immediately you notice the positive reviews and accolades adorned across the wall. The place is clean and the inside did not have any strange smell. I ordered from the Lite menu and got the steamed vegetables with chicken. Yet, they do have an authentic menu that has orders that need to be placed in advance. Consistently delicious food! This is my family's go to for Chinese food. We've ordered many different items and they were all yummy.

I got carry-out from here and enjoyed it. While it may not have been the best I've ever had, I enjoyed that they had very unique dishes that I had never seen before at a Chinese restaurant (as in, authentic Chinese food). Everyone eating here was Asian, so I took that as a good sign it was the real deal. I would definitely come back if I was nearby.
