This place is so hidden, I didn't even wanna Yelp it. But alas, here I am writing a review for my Yelposphere to see. Gotta admit it- Gran Milan is delicious, you couldn't guess there was a bakery in the area it's in, and it's got a very casual vibe. My co-worker suggested this bakery to me before we went off to work. She raved about it and I was a bit skeptic...especially when we pulled up to the spot. However, entering the cafe and seeing all the baked goods lined up made me quickly change my mind. An assortment of croissants, tarts, cookies, sandwiches lay before me and I had to hold back my wallet from jumping at everything. The cashier was super patient- I had inquiries about most of the desserts, and she patiently answered. As much as I wanted everything, I went with a chocolate pear tart, and a (super small) 8 oz mocha. I'll probably size up for that next time- both items were decadently chocolate-y, and I'd saved some of the tart for the evening. I visited Last Saturday afternoon at around 12 and was excited since I read a lot of good review and saw many pictures about this little shop. On the day I visited the choices were very limited, not sure they sold out?!? Tried a few things but they were just ok. Didn't taste fresh to me. I remembered there was one hazelnut pie I ordered and that's possibly the only one I really want to tried. When I got home, not in the box! Very disappointed. Finally found a new place for brunch. It's quaint, it's cute and with plenty of parking. The entry way is very welcoming with an arch of leaves, board menus and 4 small bistro tables. Transporting you away from the industrial area it is located in. The inside is as equally as welcoming and with Italian flair. Panatones decorating the shelves, an array of fresh delicious and decadent desserts and their awards and photos proudly displayed, as a testament this place takes their food and dessert seriously! We are arrived during the busy lunch rush on a Saturday afternoon, line was out the door and every outside table was occupied. So far so good... it means this place is good! The wall is full of amazing breakfast options but since it was past 10:30 we couldn't order, so I ordered the Pesto Panini and the olive sticks my daughter ordered the pepperoni pizza. For Drinks I ordered a Cappuccino and my daughter ordered the iced mocha. For Desserts we ordered the lobster Tail croissant, a lemon tart and a fruit tart. All nicely placed in a box. We sat inside since the tables outside were unavailable which I actually didn't mind, gave me the opportunity to take it all in. I'm weird I like to see the hustle and bustle of a busy restaurant! Food arrived nice and hot my panini came out first and I was very impressed, very tasty and delicious. The pizza came out a few minutes later and looked perfect. My daughter prefers thin with a slight crisp and that's exactly how she got it. Drinks were made on the spot and delicious. I will be retuning for breakfast to check out the rest of the items. Fresh Baked Everything Everyday. Bistro service order at the counter and if it needs heating wait a bit. Display counters say indulge, so much Eye candy, I wish had 4 stomachs. I recently went back to Gran Milan and had the most enjoyable coffee and yummy pastry. I love a good strong cup of coffee and this was it. Trying to decide on a sweet or savory breakfast is a challenge because everything looks so good. Yesterday, I had the most lovely berry pastry. The taste was decadent and the flaky pastry was just right. I liked it so much I went back today! I had the almond croissant with almond creme inside...what a nice delicate flavor. I bought some olive bread to go with my dinner of Italian soup and it was tender and full of olives. Service is personable and friendly. The cafe is small with a few tables inside as well as outside. The location is in a collection of light industrial shops and easy to miss. Once you find Gran Milan you realize you've stepped into a real Italian gem! read more

Lawd, help me! Already been back a 3rd time. The croissants are fat, magical, flaky puffs of deliciousness. Plain buttery, or filled with chocolate or creme, or almond frangipani, you can't go wrong. Pair that bad boy with their curl-your-toes hot chocolate and it will cut through that off-shore, East Bay breeze and warm your cheeks. No joke on pastry skills with these folks! Their specialty, the orange and ricotta Sfofatelle blew my mind and had us all daydreaming about when we could get more. Score the large ones for only $1more, cuz you need the big one, or a dozen! {Swoon} They did this recipe in S5E7 of The Great British Baking Show and only the Italian fellow even came close to nailing the recipe the way these folks do. Take some to Nonna when she's no longer able to make them. The tiramisu was firm enough to hold and eat in my hand. (What?!) Held the perfect amount of coffee liqueur soaked in the sponge layers between thick layers of dreamy cream. We were down to only 2 decent tiramisus to be had in the East Bay since Skates By The Bay took it off the menu, but this one ranks! The chocolate and creme filled Zeppoli di San Guiseppe swirls were a big hit as well. Eyes rolling back in our heads, savoring each bite. Chocolate won. Order these in advance for Saint Joseph's Day. The Napoleon's were Napoleonic largely due to their creme patissiere fillings, in any flavor, being firm, without skin, and not treacly sweet or runny. They have the perfect bite. Chocolate pear tort with a soft crumbly crust was excellent stored in the refrigerator overnight and reheated. Likewise the cannoli and crispy filled horns we're great fresh and the morning after when folks showed up for work. Still crispy and looking scrummy! It's pretty clear that they have specialty cakes and breads for every season and I plan to sample all year through. I enjoy paninis and pastries here. As others have said, the man preparing the food (in plain sight) consistently does not wear his mask over his nose, or doesn't have it on at all. I have been coming here off and on since they first opened. I always forget to check in, post photos, etc., but I go often enough that they remember me. They are a solid and delicious bakery for both savoury and sweet treats. The staff is always cheerful and friendly. So the plain crossaint is HEAVEN! Literally the best croissant I've ever had - mind you I don't go to cafés and order plain croissants often, but when somethings good, ya just know! There isn't really much to say about Gran Milan and their amazing pastries. Almost every single goodie I've had is so good that the only thing that stood out is the one item that did not live up to the standard/expectations they have set. Yes it might seem rather strange that you remember the one thing that was not good; but then the human mind finds it easier to remember the one aberration instead of the numerous other permutations of similarities. The macaron. I tried the lemon, and the green tea, and both were too moist, almost to the point of being soggy, with the green tea macaron collapsing upon lifting from the display tray set out on the self service counter. They were both missing the nuttiness, chewiness, and crumbliness you expect of a macaron. Both were pretty decent on the taste front as far as the lemoniness (I bet this is not a real word) and green-teaness (nor this, but bear with me) is concerned. I'll be remiss to just complain about that *one* thing that went wrong and not write a peep about all the things that they do right. Let's start with the Sfogliatella --- heart shaped layers of pastry-shell filled with creamy ricotta cheese with essence of orange. It's absolutely delightful and pairs beautifully with either chai or cafe latté. One item I love but haven't seen again (yet) is this baked round semi-crumbly "tart" covered with chocolate, with a mound of creamy chocolate filling. The tart itself has a moist but slightly crumbly texture, and I long for it. Other notable mentions are the blueberry custard tart (beautiful play between the mild tartness of the berries, and the creamy sweetness of the custard), the whole apple pastry (wherein a whole apple --- pitted, peeled, and sliced thinly --- was poached in rum or brandy and baked in the pastry shell), the cannoli (smooth ricotta filling with chocolate chips, and zest of orange), and the peach chocolate tart (thin slices of peach on a smooth dark chocolate filling). You can't complain about your just desserts, when meted out by Gran Cafe Milan. read more

I patronized this unusually located place a few months back, having heard that a new bakery was in the vecinity. Not as hard to find as long as one locates the strip mall with the auto body place and the large pillared signs that loom up. Granted, i've only tried 2 carb items on the menu. Considering heading to Italia later this year, I can't say that eating here made me crave Italy, or that my sandwich was otherwordly. Did I order the wrong items, or just an off day? I find the prices medium for the Bay... certainly nothing like some other nearby bakeries. read more

I've been going to the dog park thats near this place for 8 years and I've never known about this place until I seen it on Yelp and realized it was literally right next to Point Isabelle dog park so I had to check it out and wow! They have so many desserts, breads, sandwiches, pizza's, pastries, and so much other stuff to choose from! My husband and I had to ask the nice lady in the front what each thing was or filled with and she was super nice and told us everything. I got the pistachio filled croissant and it was to die for! The cannoli had little chocolate chips inside and the filling was not sweet at all as it was just perfect. I also got some kind of breakfast pizza bread and it was so good! This is hands down the best pastry I've ever eaten. I m talking specifically of the Sfogliatella. It's hard to find and I'm overly excited to find it here in my neighborhood. For their products they get 5 stars, for courtesy to customers they get 0 stars. After driving an hour to find them closed on Friday December 30th at noon. They didn't even have enough courtesy for their customers to leave a phone message or update their website. The last message on their website says they'll be closed Labor Day! THANKS! We tried the roast beef panini and there was very little roast beef in it. One thin slice and that's it. I had the the chicken pesto panini and it was very good with the vegetarian bread. The chicken breast wasn't too thin but good enough for the job. Great flavor. The Milan hot chocolate was very thick and not too sweet. It tasted like a melted chocolate bar. Pastries were just okay. We had a pistachio croissant was messy and only had filling in the middle. The ricotta tart was a big disappointment, very little ricotta and mostly just a chunk of soft short bread (flour, butter, and sugar). They really skimped on the ingredients and I remember it used to be way better so the pastries have gone downhill sadly. Will come back for the chicken panini and try more pastries. read more

Such beautiful pastries, true lamination the service was wonderful. We drove from Vallejo to try the sfogliatelle, which didn't disappoint. We had a chocolate twist and caffe seated inside.
